March 2010 Dear Parents, Current & Former Students & Staff, and Community Members: In 2009, Alexandra School celebrated its centennial. Although the beautiful original building has long since been replaced, its legacy continues. Once a high school, elementary school, primary school, junior high school and now middle school, Alexandra continues to play an active role in the education of young people within the Medicine Hat community. Each year Student Council determines a legacy project; something they want to leave for others. All students are given an opportunity to vote on which project will be their legacy. While some of the projects have been small, such as a water fountain, others have been fairly ambitious and have taken a number of years to complete. The outdoor amphitheatre, the outdoor picnic tables, the video bulletin system throughout school are examples of some of the more extensive projects undertaken and completed. Three years ago students voted to have a free standing mural created for the front of the school to represent Alexandra’s rich history and role as an educational facility. Mr. James Marshall was contracted to design the mural. With input from students, his work of art now sits prominently in front of our building. The original Alexandra stone has been repaired and is a significant part of this mural. A project of this magnitude is costly. Student Council has already sold over 300 “bricks” (spaces on a section of granite) to assist with the cost of the mural. Students who attend or attended Alexandra School add to the legacy. Please consider adding your name to the mural by purchasing a “brick” at a cost of $50.00. Complete the form on the back of this letter. Don’t forget to enclose your cheque. You may include several names as shown in the example below.
