Present: Guests: 1.0 Call to order 2.0 Introductions 3.0 School District Services MINUTES – Council of School Councils Thursday March 18, 2010 Heather Smith-Schenkey, Roy Wilson, Terrie Chapdelaine, Lilas Litousky, Tony Zuback, Marcie Moore, Tammy Loeffler, Candia Kulessa, Ashley Christianson, Becky Baskier, Grant Henderson Cherie de Boer, Molly Hanson-Nagel, Kimberlee Brooks • The meeting was called to order at 7:00 pm by Heathery Smith- Schenkey. • Grant Henderson introduced Molly Hanson-Nagel, Healthy School Project Facilitator • SD76 invited Molly Hanson-Nagel on staff to work with our schools for one year (ceasing May, 2010) to bridge communication between students, staff, and parents in supporting nutrition initiatives in schools. • Cherie de Boer and Kimberlee Brooks, with Alberta Health Services- Healthy Weights, team with Molly to encourage healthy food choices and physical well-being in children and youth. Guest Speaker: Molly Hanson-Nagel 45 minute presentation • Molly’s project encompassed the need for healthy eating, active living, and positive social environments for overall wellbeing. The shortfall in school-aged children is lack of healthy eating. • In 2009, Policy 680 was implemented in our schools in an effort to create an environment that provides healthy food choices and promotes healthy eating habits. Congratulations to all schools for making positive changes in response to policy. • An Advisory Committee with “Lead Teacher” representatives was formed to address specific school needs. Supportive strategies were developed, including the Healthy Habits Challenge, as well as offering 50 sessions of Be Fit for Life to students and staff. • Partnerships have been made with Moving and Choosing and Healthy Opportunities for Children. The latter granted $10 000, which has been used in 15 of our schools to support healthy nutrition initiatives. • Resources distributed: Single Serving Packaged Food List, Healthy School Communities Resource Package, School Nutrition Handbook, Bake Better Bites, How to Recruit and Retain Volunteers, and My Amazing Little Cookbook (order free class sets from www.movingandchoosing.com ) . Action To Be Taken Present summary at School Council Meetings.
• Parent councils using fast food restaurants for hot lunches should refer to sd76.ab.ca “Healthy Living” for healthy choices available at these vendors. 10 minute question/answer period • Molly requested feedback on how to educate parents that are making poor food choices. • Parents gave positive feedback and support. 4.0 • Adoption of January 14, 2010 minutes 5.0 6.0 • Motion made by Terrie Chapdelaine to approve minutes as distributed. (refer to Superintendent report for more discussion). • Budget cuts. (Refer to Superintendent report for more discussion). • Exciting Field trips recently approved (eg. MHHS football teams will travel to California) • School closure: George P. Vanier School will relocate to Herald School starting September 2010. Central Park School consideration for closure – public meeting March 22, 7 p.m. at Central Park School. Action To Be Taken 3 parents from River Heights School will attend. COSC requested they present a summary next meeting.
