April 2010
March signals the beginning of the planning for
next year as we start the registration process in
earnest. At the start of the month we held a very
impressive Orientation Evening for all students and
their parent/guardians who are interested in
attending our school. Once again the highlight of
the evening were our students who did a super job
of speaking to the audience of over 600 people and
touring families through our school. A copy of the
outstanding video (Thank You Mrs. Jans) that was
shown that evening is available on our school’s
website.
A registration team led by Mrs. Thomas, Mrs. Ennis
and Ms. Georget has visited each of the eight feeder
schools (all the elementary schools south of the
river). Each grade 6 student has been given a
registration form, a FAQ booklet and program
brochures; all of which are also available on our
website. Mrs. Ennis has distributed registration
forms to our grade seven students for next year and
Medicine Hat High School administration and
counsellors were at Alexandra to begin the
registration process for our grade eights entering
their school next year.
This past month our Grade 7 and 8 Band performed
the closing act at the District Telethon and
participated in the Music Festival. Our school held
our own very successful Science Fair and several
students who were members of the Science Fair
club entered the regional Science Fair held at the
college.
In addition to all of this, we wound up our
successful Basketball Season. The trophies are on
display in our foyer. We have begun the Badminton
Season, Intramurals has shifted from Floor Hockey
to Home Room Dodge Ball and some of our
students have begun rehearsing for a one-act play
that will be performed at our School’s Open House
Showcase 2010, on May 12 th . There are many ways
that students can become involved in school
activities such as clubs, teams and Student Council.
Each April the staff of our school attends the
Alberta Middle Level Learners Conference. In
order to maximize our students’ instructional day
we have shifted the regular April staff collaboration
day to match the Conference so students will not
have to miss an additional day of school. So please
note; there will be no school for students on Friday,
April 16 th , 2010. While we are noting important
events, the third report card will be issued on April
23 rd , 2010. Just a reminder that you (both parents
and students) can access student information,
including past and current report card marks, online
through HomeLogic.
We hope you and your family will have a great
Easter Break. By the time you read this we will
have entered the fourth and final report period.
There remains a great deal to be accomplished. It
has been a long time since the lessons were taught
at the start of September so it is not too early to
begin to review for the final exams (after the Easter
Break ).
I also would like to take this opportunity to express
my great pleasure in the early identification of Mr.
Jason Peters and his Vice-Principals, Mrs. Richelle
Thomas and Mr. Troy Bartman as the designated
administrative team for Alexandra for next year.
The grade 7’s were given their grade 8 registration
forms last week. Please be sure to fill the
registration form out and return it to the school to
enable your child to get their preferred choices for
next year.
The grade 9 registration for MHHS took place on
March 22 nd during the morning classes for the grade
8’s. The administrators and counsellors from
MHHS explained the programs and options
available to the students. It is very important to
complete these registration forms and return them
as soon as possible to MHHS if you have not
already returned them.
The 3 rd Report Card will be issued on April 23 rd .
Please ensure your child has all of their assignments
handed in before any due dates. Incomplete
assignments are a major reason for student report
card marks to be lower than expected.
TRANSITION 9 PROGRAM AT MHHS: There
will be an information meeting at MHHS on
Tuesday, May 4 th at 7:00 p.m. in Room 615, for any
parents interested in the program. This program is
for students who are having difficulty with the
regular grade 8 curriculum and whose parents feel
their child may benefit from an alternative program
other than the regular grade 9. Please contact Mrs.
Ennis for more information at 403-527-8571 ext.
Love and Logic Moment
Teenagers and Spring Fever
Raising the Odds for Responsible Behavior by
Dr. Charles Fay
Spring fever can be deadly
A survey completed by the Love and Logic Institute
found 75 percent of American adults believe
teenagers today face more serious, potentially lifethreatening
decisions than a generation ago. These
decisions, combined with a strong dose of hormones
and the vacations and parties that come with
springtime, can challenge the most sensible
teenagers. Fortunately, there are some simple, time-
tested tips for parents who want their teens to make
cool decisions as the weather gets warmer.
Tip #1: Don't fall into the trap of thinking teens no
longer need their parents. Because their adolescents
are becoming more independent, many parents
believe it's okay to leave them without supervision
for hours on end. Nothing could be farther from the
truth. Wise parents understand this, and they
recognize teens need a watchful, yet friendly eye.
Tip #2: Set enforceable limits. Teens need and
want limits. However, instead of telling your teen
what they should do, experiment with telling them
what you will do or what you will allow. Instead
of, "Be home on time," experiment with something
like, "I share the car keys with those who come
home on time." Instead of, "Don't hang out with
Steve. He's trouble," try, "Feel free to see Steve
when I know there is adult supervision." For a free
list of response examples, visit this page.
Tip #3: Hold them accountable with empathy and
logical consequences. Parents who provide
consequences with anger create teens who think,
"When I make poor decisions, it makes others really
mad. I better not get caught." Parents who replace
anger with a genuine dose of empathy or sadness
raise teens who know, "When I make poor decisions
it makes my life really sad. For my sake, I'd better
make wise ones!"
Tip #4: When you are too angry or worried to think,
delay the consequence. If your teen does something
that throws you off balance, buy some time by
saying, "I'm going to have to do something about
this. But not now… later… try not to worry." Take
some time to calm down and get some ideas from
friends.
Every day, parents around the world are finding
their lives made easier with these tips. One parent
commented, "I came home from work to find my 16
year old daughter and six of her friends had
scattered pizza, chips, and dip all over my new
carpet! I was furious. Luckily I remembered the
advice from Love and Logic and how to delay
consequences. All I managed to say was, “I'd better
calm down first. We'll talk later. Try not to
worry.” By the next day, she already had a good
plan for selling enough of her things to hire some
carpet cleaners!"
Give Love and Logic a try and find out why so
many parents say it has changed their lives. Get
started right away!
Lady Jayhawk Basketball
We can’t believe the basketball season has come to
an end. What a whirlwind of a season! For the
third season, we choose to enter one of our teams in
the grade 9 league while the other played in the 7 &
8 B league. Although some people measure success
in the win/loss column, we believe that it has been a
successful year from the standpoint that we saw
tremendous skill improvement and growth, were
competitive within each league, represented our
school with pride, and had a lot of fun. Team
Werner won the Consolation side of the grade 7 & 8
league and as the season went on, the players
showed more confidence and leadership on the
court. Team Thomas finished the season winning
the Consolation side of the grade 9 league playing
competitively with all teams entered, and went on to
challenge themselves, and strut their stuff, with a
fourth place finish in the Southern Alberta Zone.
The one thing that didn’t change this year was the
support and dedication to the Jayhawks by players
and parents. As coaches, there is nothing more
important than parental involvement and support,
and we thank you for giving of your time, and effort
to make this a successful year. The dedication of
players is also important in having a successful
basketball program, and this year our girls came
together as a team and supported each other.
Through this support and dedication, the team
raised enough funds to begin the season with a team
building night, travel to an out of town tournament,
receive team warm-up shirts for each player, and to
celebrate their successes with a year-end trip to a
Red Deer Middle School Tournament.
The sad thing about Alexandra Middle School is
that we only get to have our students for two years,
and then we say goodbye. As coaches, it will be
hard to see our grade eights leave. This group has
been a pleasure to coach, and a lot of fun to be
around. We would like to thank all players and
their parents for contributing to our school, and
encourage all of you to work hard outside of school
to improve on your skills and continue to play
basketball.
Boys “A” Basketball
Another successful Boy’s Basketball season has
come to an end with the “A” Boys Grade 8 team
winning the South Zone 1J Championship silver
medal. The Jayhawks hosted the tournament in the
Hat High North Gym and defeated the Notre Dame
Bull Dawgs by 6 points to reach the gold medal
final. In that game, Alexandra met a strong GS
Lakie team from Lethbridge and played hard but
came up a bit short of the win.
Playing in the grade 9 “A” league, the Jawhawks
compiled a league record of 3 wins against 7 losses
and after defeating Irvine in the consolation semi-
final, the Jayhawks lost to Notre Dame to finish
second in the league consolation side.
The Jayhawks played in 3 tournaments this past
season. The highlight was our home tournament
victory over, whom else, Notre Dame. Other
results included consolation championships in the
Dawg Pound Classic and the St. Mary’s
tournament. Team awards will be presented to
several players at the year-end social. These awards
will include Team MVP, Most Improved and the
“Hustle” Award. “A” Team members included
Lewis Brown, Riley Stenhouse, Cam Fischer, Adam
Hansen, Paul Li, Vanja Vujovic, Logan Baumann,
Skyler Saddleback, Owin Bannow and Jordan
Weimer.
Another highlight of the season was the purchase of
team sets of sublimated white uniforms for both the
“A” and “B” teams. Together with our blue
uniforms, the Jayhawks will now be able to dress
out in either home or away colors. Thanks to
Driver’s Edge and Mona McConnell for a
significant contribution to the purchase of these new
uniforms.
The “B” Boys Basketball team was comprised
exclusively of grade 7 players and these students
will be the cornerstone of next year’s “A” team.
The “B” Boys were a few overtime points away
from winning the “B” League. Playing against a
strong team with several grade 8 players from
Redcliff’s Parkside Junior High, the Jayhawks came
within a whisker of winning the title. Great job
boys!! The team consisted of the following players:
Kyle Fischer, Brayden McKenna Brendan Newton,
Jackson Hill, Nic Zivanovic, Chance Winslow,
Sean McConnell, Logan Spruyt, Chour Chour, and
Douth Reat.
Thanks to all players and parents for contributing to
a memorable season and we all look forward to
watching these players as they move on to either the
Jayhawk “A” Team or the Hat High Mohawks and
even greater accomplishments.
Spring had sprung and we were eagerly looking
forward to those first flowers of spring! While we
will have to wait a little longer for each of those, we
do not have to wait for football anymore!! It is
here!
Spring camp is a two week trial period where any
student in grades 6-8 can come out and try tackle
football. We have just finished one of our most
successful seasons yet and we are hoping to do even
better!
We cannot do better without you. If any students
are interested, please get a registration sheet and
come on out and give it a try. We are practicing
and ending just before the long weekend with a
jamboree (Modified Football Tournament). The
experience is non-threatening and while no previous
experience is necessary we do expect that the
athletes will be open to learning and trying new
things.
If you have or are a student that is interested you
can see Mr. Klein or give him a call at 403- 527-
REMARKS:
ATHLETICS AND EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES:
Students are expected to conduct themselves at all times
in harmony with the rules and regulations that are set by
the administration and faculty of Medicine Hat High
School.
It is a privilege to have been chosen to represent the School
and others may judge Medicine Hat High School by the
conduct of its representatives. Disciplinary action will be
taken if students do not abide by the rules.
The rules of conduct on extra-curricular and field trips are as follows:
• the use of illegal drugs and/or alcoholic beverages is strictly prohibited;
• students are not to be involved with the theft or vandalism of property;
• the use of physical force or threats to resolve personal disagreements is prohibited;
• other instructions relating to specific activities.
The advisor/coach will provide a written copy of the rules to the student at the beginning of the term or, in
the case of several trips, prior to the beginning of the trip. These rules must be approved by the Principal.
Positive Consequences:
Participation in extra-curricular activities carry considerable
rewards for the participants.
At the end of each term the Principal will contact the students and parents by letter commending the
students for the manner in which they have represented themselves and the School.
In the case of field trips, staff members will be expected to give positive recognition to those students who
have been co-operative and well behaved. Staff members are encouraged to include a set of positive
consequences in their discipline plan.
Negative Consequences:
Violations of the first three (3) rules listed above will result
in the following:
• the coach or supervisor will immediately remove the offending student from further
participation in the activity;
• the coach or supervisor will contact the parents by telephone and request that they come and
take the offending student home;
• the Principal may suspend the student for a period not exceeding five (5) days and may also
prohibit that student from participating in any extra-curricular activity (Policy 660 E 001);
• the police may be contacted to discuss the possibility of charges being laid if the student’s
actions are in violation of the law.
March 2010
Dear Parents, Current & Former Students & Staff, and Community Members:
In 2009, Alexandra School celebrated its centennial. Although the beautiful original building has long since
been replaced, its legacy continues. Once a high school, elementary school, primary school, junior high school
and now middle school, Alexandra continues to play an active role in the education of young people within the
Medicine Hat community.
Each year Student Council determines a legacy project; something they want to leave for others. All students
are given an opportunity to vote on which project will be their legacy. While some of the projects have been
small, such as a water fountain, others have been fairly ambitious and have taken a number of years to
complete. The outdoor amphitheatre, the outdoor picnic tables, the video bulletin system throughout school are
examples of some of the more extensive projects undertaken and completed.
Three years ago students voted to have a free standing mural created for the front of the school to represent
Alexandra’s rich history and role as an educational facility. Mr. James Marshall was contracted to design the
mural. With input from students, his work of art now sits prominently in front of our building. The original
Alexandra stone has been repaired and is a significant part of this mural.
A project of this magnitude is costly. Student Council has already sold over 300 “bricks” (spaces on a section
of granite) to assist with the cost of the mural. Students who attend or attended Alexandra School add to the
legacy. Please consider adding your name to the mural by purchasing a “brick” at a cost of $50.00. Complete
the form on the back of this letter. Don’t forget to enclose your cheque. You may include several names as
shown in the example below. If more than one individual is identified, you may also wish to include the range
of dates they attended Alexandra School:
Sincerely,
Theme will be physical activity / health and wellness. Paul Placus will hold an evening parent session as well
as a “Boot Camp” seminar on the Saturday. Great sessions are planned relating to physical, social/emotional
and safety in terms of health. Wanted: Feedback on providing lunch. Discussed options: Subway, calling Hat
High, etc. Suggested the focus is the conference and the meal shouldn’t be an extra stress. Students will get
healthy snacks and a tote bag. Some grants have been applied for through the City $6,500.00 (waiting to hear
from others).
- MyPlace has been involved with the registrations for next year and potential new in-takes. They have been
• Grant Henderson introduced Molly Hanson-Nagel, Healthy School
Project Facilitator
• SD76 invited Molly Hanson-Nagel on staff to work with our schools
for one year (ceasing May, 2010) to bridge communication between
students, staff, and parents in supporting nutrition initiatives in
schools.
• Cherie de Boer and Kimberlee Brooks, with Alberta Health Services-
Healthy Weights, team with Molly to encourage healthy food choices
Guest Speaker: Molly Hanson-Nagel
45 minute presentation
• Molly’s project encompassed the need for healthy eating, active
living, and positive social environments for overall wellbeing. The
shortfall in school-aged children is lack of healthy eating.
• In 2009, Policy 680 was implemented in our schools in an effort to
create an environment that provides healthy food choices and
promotes healthy eating habits. Congratulations to all schools for
making positive changes in response to policy.
• An Advisory Committee with “Lead Teacher” representatives was
formed to address specific school needs. Supportive strategies were
developed, including the Healthy Habits Challenge, as well as
offering 50 sessions of Be Fit for Life to students and staff.
• Partnerships have been made with Moving and Choosing and Healthy
Opportunities for Children. The latter granted $10 000, which has
been used in 15 of our schools to support healthy nutrition initiatives.
Superintendent’s Report
Dr. Henderson reports:
• Education Budget: The new budget will force further cuts of $1.4
million deficit. The Board still encourages parents to refer to the
Advocacy booklet they have printed to empower parents to voice
their concerns to government. The board must find ways to cut
spending with minimal impact on learning.
• School closures (as described in Trustee comments)
• Sale of unused schools or leasing unused space (with criteria
tenants to meet) is a consideration
• For the past 6 years, SD76 has offered full day kindergarten,
despite being funded for only a ½ day program. Unfunded
cost has been $825 000 annually. The Board has been
researching the learning impact of full day K program,
seeking public opinion, and investigating many options to
handle the unfunded program. A decision will be made by
the end of April, 2010 regarding the kindergarten program.
• Video Surveillance: The Board has given its approval to write a policy
enabling security cameras to be in schools. The Policy must include
FOIP regulations, purpose for use, when and where they are used,
storage and destruction of data, and authorized personnel to view and
rationale of viewing.
• Barrie Bennett: The Board maintains the instruction provided to staff
by Dr, Bennett is powerful and important. Next year, to minimize
disruptions in the schools that may occur when teachers are at work
shops, instructional time will be reduced from 5 to 3 days with Dr.
Bennett, and from 3 to 1 day for professional development follow-up.
Future meeting dates:
• May 5, 2010
