Joe is alobbyist and business consultant whohas contributed articles to past <strong>Zabel</strong> TMZone magazines enc<strong>our</strong>agingcooperation between industry andgovernment.Feeling a two- or three-sentence bionext to his picture is just not adequate,we asked for his permission to turnthe tables and make him the subjectof an article. He graciously agreed.Joe McClees is a native of NorthCarolina and resides in New Bern,but during the legislative year, hedivides his time among state capitalsand Washington, D.C. When statelegislatures adj<strong>our</strong>n, he works in theU.S. and overseas on businessconsulting projects.His wife, the former Susan HenriJohnson, is an attorney. Both arecommitted Christians who believetheir faith should be ever apparent tothose around them.Joe's j<strong>our</strong>ney to his career as alobbyist/consultant began with a degreefrom Atlantic Christian College (nowBarton College) where he received aB.A. in history and political science.From 1976 to 1986, he served inseveral positions in the North CarolinaDepartment of Natural Res<strong>our</strong>cesincluding Special Assistant Secretaryof Natural Res<strong>our</strong>ces which gave himthe unique opportunity of workingwith environmental and health relatedagencies.In 1986, Joe began McCleesConsulting, a firm that offers lobbyingand economic consulting services toindividual and corporate clients. Hisbackground in North Carolinagovernment and industry has enabledhim to offer his expertise to a varietyof clients, and when the GeneralAssembly is in session in Raleigh orCongress in Washington, D.C., anoften heard phrase is, "Joe McCleessays . . . "He is known for his tenacity andforthrightness and as a man who getsthe job done right, no matter howlong it takes. His clients come tohim after seeing him in action or byreferral from other clients who foundJoe gets results, often when otheravenues have failed. He currentlyacts as the lobbyist for the NorthCarolina Septic Tank Associationwhere he has overseen the successfulefforts at rewriting regulations topromote a positive businessenvironment.He also represents the North CarolinaPortable Toilet Group as well as theTechnological DevelopmentAuthority. In his representation ofthe latter group, he has successfullylobbied for matching funds andspecific legislation for funds for venturecapital investment in North Carolina.Joe says, "A successful trade associationoperates like a profitable business.Work goes into that business everyweek. Projections are made, goalsare set, and everyone works all yearto accomplish those goals. To succeed,you must hire a professional. As withy<strong>our</strong> business, there are no short cutsto success."Besides his work with McCleesConsulting, Joe has found time topursue his hobby of shooting, andhunting trips have taken him as faras England, Scotland and Africa.
