INSIDEDear Friends:It’s a challenge to sort through a year of accomplishments andattempt to highlight them within the pages of this report, particularlywhen we have so many accomplishments with long-lasting,positive effects on our college. In reviewing the pages that follow, I’ve tried to summarize theminto six different groups:News. (pp. 3-6, 8-11)Keeping you informed is the primarygoal of our Community Report. Whileour accomplishments this past yearvary in size and scope, they all pointtoward tremendous progress and momentousgrowth.Foundation. (p. 7)Thirty-five years of tremendoussuccess for our College Foundationwas recently celebrated by honoringfour families who have been integral ininsuring that success throughout theyears. Numbers alone can’t explain theextraordinary influence those familieshave had on students, alumni, thecommunity, and the college, althoughattempting to count the smiles they’vegenerated would be a good start.Faculty. (pp. 12 & 13)I can’t say enough about the hard workand dedication of our faculty. Thatis why we decided to dedicate ourcenter pages to them. I only wish wehad room to highlight more of them.Athletics. (pp. 14-16)Switching to four-year athletics, joininga new league, unveiling a new nickname, debuting two new teams, hostinga national championship, and winningconference titles were all part of theremarkable success our athletic departmentexperienced this year. Did I mentionan incredible number of individual accomplishmentsas well?Students. (pp. 17-22)Every year they continue to amaze, overcome, and achieve. We’ve profiledseveral students throughout thesepages and also featured them in ournews. Much like our faculty members, Ionly wish we had space to profile more.Alumni. (p. 23)I’m not sure if our alumni realize howmuch pride we take in them. We considertheir accomplishments and successes partof our own accomplishments and successes. We like to brag about them. They arethe end result of all of our efforts, so wecan’t help but want to stay in touch withthem and maintain that lifelong relationship.I hope you enjoy our Community Report. It’s been a pleasure putting it together andreflecting on our shared successes. We lookforward to another great year for SUNY Cantonand the North Country Community in 2008.Sincerely,Joseph L. President’s ReportFourteen and Flyingby PresidentJoseph L. KennedyTi m e f l i e s.While it’s hard for me to believeI’ve just completed my 14 th yearas President, it’s easy to lookback at each individual yearas a building block that hasbeen integral in constructingour current foundationof success.I’ll remember thispast year, the College’s101 st , as being synonymouswith growth andimpact. We progressedin so many ways and positively impacted so many students, families, and communities that it was perhaps the most rewarding of allthe years since my arrival here in 1993.We experienced significant growth in critical areas such as enrollment, employment, fundraising, construction, and renovations, scholarships, and the development of new programs. As a result, the magnitude of our accomplishments has been substantial and, attimes, spectacular.Scholarship LuncheonSe c o n d a n d RisingEnrollment is often the end result of a number of interrelatedefforts. For example, it’s easy for us to see how the increase infundraising allows us to offer more scholarships and attract a largernumber of students, but there are many other factors as well.Construction and renovation of facilities add to the appeal of theCollege. More academic programs, such as our expanded number ofbachelor’s degrees, not only entice students to attend SUNY Canton, but they also enable them to stay for a longer period of time, four years instead of one or two.We could go on and on, but I’m sure you understand where I’mheaded. It’s not just one of these factors bolstering our enrollmentgrowth; it’s the collective sum.Our Fall 2007 enrollment was the College’s highest in 32years and the second highest in school history, topped only by its1975-76 headcount highpoint. The 2,776 students enrolled marked an increase of more than150 students from last year, more than 250 students from two yearsago, and more than 300 students from five years ago.Summerterm and Winterterm continue to record explosive enrollmentgrowth. This past summer saw nearly double the numberof students we experienced from just two years ago, and it was morethan a 50 percent increase from just last year. Our completely online Winterterm grew to more than 360 studentsthis year, which is a 10 percent jump from 2006-07 and morethan a 100 percent rise from 2005-06.We’re obviously heading in the right direction. Although it’s stillvery early in the process, applications and interest have been verystrong thus far for next year. It’s estimated that every 100 students add an additional$250,000 annually to the local economy, so SUNY Canton’s effortsare obviously paying dividends for not just the College, but theentire North Country community as well. We’re quickly moving inon our goal to reach 3,000 students within the next few years. We Ca n Do Mo r eAs the costs of attending college continue to increase, the importanceof fundraising and scholarships hasnever been greater. As successful as we’vebeen, we can, and need to, do more.Students were awarded more than$400,000 in scholarships this year, settinga record in total amount awardedand number of awards. Almost 300students were recipients of SUNY CantonFoundation scholarships, enablingthem to attend college when they mightotherwise not have had the financial abilityto do so. This may be unfamiliar tomany of our older alumni whose tuitionwas largely or wholly paid for by thestate, but the reality is we now need yoursupport more than ever before, since thestate pays less than 30 percent of studentcost.More students translate into more need. We want to make surethat qualified students with bright futures are able to attend our collegeand transform their lives as so many of our alumni before themhave already done. The growth of our Foundation has been fantastic. Foundationassets have surpassed $14 million for the first time in college historywith an increase of nearly $4 million last year alone. That’s a result of the extraordinary generosity of alumni, profes-8 2008 SUNY Canton Magazine www.canton.edu

sors, businesses, staff, and friends ofthe College, but we still need a higherpercentage of you to participate. It isan important part of the growth of ourcollege and the fulfillment of our goalsto attract top quality students.Foundation Board members andstaff have worked diligently with CentennialCampaign Co-Chairs Ron ’59and Blanche Woodcock ’06 to buildfrom our success. Those collective effortshave resulted in fantastic progress.Foundation assets have grown from $1 million in 1993, to $5million in 2004, to today’s more than $14 million total. With yourhelp, those numbers will continue to grow.Ne w Co n s t r u c t i o n a n d Re n o v a t i o n sNew construction projects and renovations have been plentifulthis past year. They include new cross-country trails for walking, jogging, and biking;a new syntheticturf field for soccerand other sports; anew baseball fieldthat will be readyfor competitionthis fall; and thenew ConvocationAthletic RecreationCenter (CARC) onthe way.Various upgradeshave been completedin the residencehalls; steps andramps between theGround work for the new ConvocationAthletic Recreation Center began last fall.library and FrenchHall; and facelifts inNevaldine, Cook, and Wicks Halls.Planning for the upcoming year also includes further renovationsin Nevaldine and Wicks and relocating our Information ServicesCenter to Southworth Library.Mo r e St u d e n t s Mo r e Em p l oye e sOur impact on the North Country economy doesn’t just stopwith the growing number of students. We have continued to expandour workforce significantly by adding more professors, morestaff members, and more contracted workers.Five years ago the College had 408 employees. That total hasgrown to 544 this year, an increase of more than 33 percent and asizable boost for our local economy. Those new employees bringfamilies, buy houses, support retail, pay taxes, and so on.President’s ReportNEW FACES: Ten of the college’s newest faculty members.Just last year, SUNY Canton expanded from 500 to 544 employees, including 14 new full-time faculty members. That’s an overallemployee increase of almost 9 percent in just 12 months. If you live in the North Country, there’s a good chance youknow someone who recently started a new job at SUNY Canton. Those numbers don’t include the sizable contingent of workerswho work on campus for area businesses. SUNY Canton’s recentconstruction projects have been a boon for local contractors. Fromupgrading exterior stairs and walkways (a Gouverneur company)to constructing the new $1.8 million synthetic turf field (a Norfolkcompany), you’ll find local contractors continually benefitting fromour upgrades and expansions.Mo r e Ma j o r s Mo r e Ch o i c e sOur new additions are certainly not limited to facilities. We’veadded three new bachelor’s degrees since our last Community Report, and there are still more on the way. That brings our latest total of bachelor’s degrees to 15 followingthe unveilingof Graphic andMultimedia Design,Industrial TechnologyManagement, andDental Hygiene.Graphic andMultimedia Designwill focus on newmedia and the everchangingmethodsof communication. In addition to basicart and humanitiescourses, the majorwill include classesin three-dimensionaldesign, web publishing, digital photography, documentaryvideo, and videogame design andproduction. The IndustrialBachelor’s DegreesCurrent• Alternative and Renewable EnergySystems• Criminal Investigation• Dental Hygiene• Emergency Management• Facilities Operation• Financial Services• Funeral Services Administration• Graphic and Multimedia Design• Health Care Management• Industrial Technology Management• Information Technology• Law Enforcement Leadership• Legal Studies• Technology Management• Veterinary Services ManagementCOMING SOON• Forensic Science Technology• Health Information Administration• Management Information Systems• Four-year Nursingwww.canton.edu 2008 SUNY Canton Magazine 9

President’s ReportTechnology Management major provides a springboard for managementand leadership careers, particularly for associate degreegraduates from the Canino School of Engineering Technology, andthe Dental Hygiene curriculum builds from our successful two-yearprogram in that field. The final two years of the Dental Hygienebachelor’s degree is offered completely online, allowing parents andworking professionals the flexibility to excel. We anticipate adding as many as half a dozen new four-year programsover the next year. The bachelor’s degrees are an importantpart of our success as we grow our enrollment. It is helping us toattract new students, retain current students, and establish a laddercurriculum that few other colleges have the luxury of offering.Ru m b l e w i t h Tr u m b l eOne of the many people who will be responsible for ushering inour new majors and ensuring the success of our current programswill be the College’s new Provost, Dr. William R. Trumble. (seepage 6.) He replaces Dr. Jeremy D. Brown who this fall was selectedas the new president at Edinboro University in Pennsylvania. Dr.Trumble comes to us from the University of New Hampshire wherehe was both a professor and a dean.We wish Dr. Brown the best in his new position. His positiveimpact on SUNY Canton was highlighted with the addition ofnumerous bachelor’s degrees, the continued exponential growth ofSUNY Canton OnLine (OL), and the remarkable expansion of ourworldwide efforts known as Planet Canton.grows in importance every day.St u d e n t s Ma k e Pr o f e s s o r s Ex c e lWho came first: the great professor or the great student? We’d like to think both here at SUNY Canton.Either way, the achievements of one group reflect well on theother. Some of the fantastic student accomplishments recognizedover the past year include:Students in our Occupational Therapy Assistant, PhysicalTherapist Assistant, and Veterinary Science Technology programsrecorded 100 percent pass rates on all of their respective nationalexams.Several Air Conditioning Engineering Technology students wonnational awards and scholarships.Business Administration major Karl Ortmeyer ’07 of Potsdamwon a national leadership award through the National RepublicanCampaign Committee’s Business Advisory Council.Students in Nursing, Criminal Justice, Electrical EngineeringTechnology, Civil Engineering Technology, Mechanical EngineeringTechnology, and Air Conditioning Engineering Technology areall among those being heavily recruited by employers at least sixmonths prior to their graduation. The Steel Bridge Team captured first place in the Upstate NewYork regional competition for the 11 th time in 14 years and finished7 th overall in the nation.Pl a n e t Ca n t o nYes, we are spanning the globe. Perhaps evenmore than most people realize.Did you know that SUNY Canton had over100 Bosnian students enrolled in classes thisfall? Did you know that there are a half dozenRussian students slated to graduate with bachelor’sdegrees this spring?A growing number of students are also enrolledfrom Japan and Ukraine.Interim Provost Pauline A. Graveline andSUNY Canton OL Director Molly Mott areamong those who have travelled extensively toestablish and lead these worldwide efforts. The College’s first Summer Program forInternational Students brought 11 studentsand one faculty member from Moscow StateUniversity. The program will be expanded to include all of ourPlanet Canton partners next summer and could bring as many as200 foreign students to campus.International partnerships have been expanded to includeAUBiH in Bosnia, Kazan State Power Engineering University inTatarstan, Institute of Public Administration in Moscow, and YaltaUniversity of Management. These are indispensable relationships that will challenge ourstudents and faculty to think and interact globally, an ability thatHo w St u d e n t s Co m m u n i c a t eIt’s abundantly obvious that today’s students communicate witheach other in remarkably different ways than their parents did at thesame age. Things like text messaging, blogs, internet social networkslike MySpace, e-mail, YouTube, and iPods weren’t prevalent ordidn’t even exist 20 years ago. (Don’t you remember 8-track playersand 45’s?)The ever-changing technology of today’s world makes it exciting10 2008 SUNY Canton Magazine www.canton.edu

President’s ReportThe contest was a great deal of fun and yielded numerous entriesthat captured the essence of college life from a student’s perspective.Student Cooperative Alliance President Caroline Kingsepp, a seniorCriminal Investigation major from Hopkinton, Mass., was selectedas one of three moderators during a recent New York State 48 th DistrictSenate debate between William Barclay and Darrel Aubertine.Kingsepp is shown above with Aubertine after the event.as well as challenging to keep up with students’ habits and preferences. It’s been ten years since the College offered its first onlinecourse. Back then, many wondered if it could be done effectively. Now, it’s a common practice throughout higher education and anessential part of learning methodology.SUNY Canton OL continues to grow in both the number ofclasses offered and the number of students enrolled. It’s been a vitalpart of the school’s global growth as well as an important educationaldelivery method for professionals and parents who mightnot otherwise be able to further their education. This spring SUNYCanton OL will be offering nearly 100 classes online.Additionally, we’ve unveiled a new design for the College’swebsite and will be integrating more video and interactive features, including videos created by students in our recent RooTube contest.A Grand Reunion! The SUNY Canton Alumni Association extends awarm invitation to Alumni Weekend, June 13-15, withspecial gatherings for graduates of:The Class of 1958 - The Class of 1983Automotive - Electrical - HAC’Ker’s - NursingFor more information, please contact Beth Irvine at800-811-6727 / irvine10@canton.edu / www.canton.edu/alumniBig Ju m p sAnother area thatsaw an incredibletransformation overthe past year wasathletics.
