1917Col. Nathaniel J. Perkins is named acting president. He is namedthe Academy’s fourth president in 1918.The Armory burned to the ground in January 1923.1923In January 1923, two separate fires destroy Snead Hall and theArmory. Arson is suspected. The only building standing on campusis Hatcher Hall.The decision is made to rebuild rather than close the school.Construction begins on a new barracks building to be namedSnead Hall, and the Alumni Gymnasium, now known as theMiddle School Gymnasium. Both buildings are completed intime for the 1923-1924 academic year.The original Snead Hall wasdestroyed by fire in January 1923within days of the Armory burning.Arson was suspected. In the photobelow, the woman in the foregroundis believed to be Mrs. W. P. Snead.Hatcher Hall is visible behind her.1926A well is sunk near the campus, adjacent to Careby Hall, andstrikes a stream of artesian water at 306 feet. The Academybecame one of the few boarding schools at the time to boast ofhaving hot and cold water in the barracks drawn from pure artesianwell waters. The well remains today, and was tapped during arecent drought year to provide additional fresh water for the ForkUnion community at large.26 Call to Quarters
