Brooke will have anopportunity to continue in the competition for one of approximately 8,200 Merit Scholarship awards, wortha total of approximately $36 million, to be offered next spring.Before they can be considered for Merit Scholarships awards, Semifinalists must advance to theFinalist level of the competition by fulfilling additional requirements that include having an outstandingacademic record, being endorsed and recommended by the high school principal, and submitting SAT Iscores that confirm the student’s earlier PSAT/NMQST performances.Other important information about the student’s educational interests and goals, as well asparticipation and leadership in school and community activities, is provided in the detailed scholarshipapplication the Semifinalists and an official of the high school must complete. NMSC will announce the2010 Merit Scholarship recipients beginning next April. These students received a Certificate of Commendation from the school and the National MeritScholarship Corporation (NMSC).Some 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptionalacademic promise. Although they will not continue in the competition for Merit Scholarship awards to beoffered next spring, Commended Students placed in the top five percent of more than one million studentswho entered the Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test asjuniors.
