Brooke will have anopportunity to continue in the competition for one of approximately 8,200 Merit Scholarship awards, wortha total of approximately $36 million, to be offered next spring.Before they can be considered for Merit Scholarships awards, Semifinalists must advance to theFinalist level of the competition by fulfilling additional requirements that include having an outstandingacademic record, being endorsed and recommended by the high school principal, and submitting SAT Iscores that confirm the student’s earlier PSAT/NMQST performances.Other important information about the student’s educational interests and goals, as well asparticipation and leadership in school and community activities, is provided in the detailed scholarshipapplication the Semifinalists and an official of the high school must complete. NMSC will announce the2010 Merit Scholarship recipients beginning next April. Congratulations Brooke!Copley High School is pleased to announce that seniors Alex Calderone, Kim Crowley, AndrewMakishi and Emily Nace have been named Commended Students in the National Merit ScholarshipProgram. These students received a Certificate of Commendation from the school and the National MeritScholarship Corporation (NMSC).Some 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptionalacademic promise. Although they will not continue in the competition for Merit Scholarship awards to beoffered next spring, Commended Students placed in the top five percent of more than one million studentswho entered the Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test asjuniors. Congratulations Alex, Kim, Andrew, and Emily!
SCHOLARSHIPS AND FINANCIAL AIDMost scholarship monies are awarded by particular institutions that look for specific academic orfinancial aid requirements. While there are general scholarship programs open to everyone regardless ofthe institution they plan to attend, these generally hold less promise than those associated with a particularinstitution. When applying to any college or technical school, students shouldalways fill out the separate scholarship/financial aid application whichsome institutions provide as part of the application. All need-basedfinancial aid is granted only after parents complete a form called the FAFSA (FreeApplication for Federal Student Aid).Students are encouraged to file the FAFSA online atwww.fafsa.ed.gov between January 1 and February 15. Establish yourPersonal Identification Number (PIN) at www.pin.ed.gov now so you cansubmit your FAFSA by mid-February 2010 at the latest.APPRENTICESHIPSApprenticeships are standard in over 400 occupations. In an apprenticeship, the employeelearns a skilled trade through a combination of theoretical class work and on-the-jobtraining for a prescribed period of time (between 1 and 6 years). The programs vary inlength, rate of pay, and intensity between various trades, but upon completion, eachemployee becomes a journeyman, or skilled craftsman. Fields offering apprenticeshipsinclude: automotive mechanics, heating and air conditioning repair and installation,plumbing, electrical, carpentry, firefighting, and jewelry design.OPPORTUNITIES IN THE MILITARYEntering the military after high school is another avenue, and there are a number of options formilitary service. It can be a great way to start a career and learn discipline, but don’t expect it to be like inthe movies. In addition to a full-time stint, there are ROTC scholarships in over 2300 colleges, which willcover your tuition (and then some) in exchange for 10 hours weekly of classroom and field training, and 4years of active duty. Military recruiters from the Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines, and NationalGuard are in the Guidance Office on a regular basis. See your counselor for additionalinformation.SENIOR CONFERENCESThis important conference is the first graduation requirement of the year. If you have not yetaccomplished this task, schedule an appointment with your counselor TODAY! For seniorsplanning to attend college, there are two college entrance tests available. Check the colleges of yourchoice to learn which test is required. Applications for the SAT and ACT are available in theGuidance Office. Test dates are posted in the Guidance Office and on the applications. All test dateshave registration deadlines! The next SAT and ACT dates are December 5 & 12, respectively. Theregistration deadlines are October 30 & November 6. Some of the more selective colleges requireachievement tests (called the SAT II) in addition to the regular SAT and ACT tests.
