<strong>Copley</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong><strong>Smoke</strong> <strong>Signals</strong>November 2009-10http://www.copley-fairlawn.org__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Dear <strong>Copley</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> Families,The end of the first grading quarter is November 6. I encourage parents and guardians to check their students’ grades inProgress Book and contact teachers through email and/or phone. We will do all we can to help our students besuccessful. We have many interventions available to students to aid them in their academics.Teachers are available to students before school, after school, and at times during study halls. Students needing extrasupport should schedule times with their teachers for conferencing and tutoring. Study tables are available to studentsduring study halls and after school. Many students are mandated to attend these through the athletic department. Mrs.Gracen monitors the study tables. Her specialty is math, but she will provide assistance to students in all areas. We havemany teachers available for private tutoring as well. You can contact the high school or board office for details. Many of our seniors have Senior Option. This means that they have a late arrival or early dismissal to or from school. These students’ grades will be reviewed at the end of the grading period. Students that are not academically successful,or that are struggling with attendance will lose the privilege of Senior Option. They will be expected to be in school allday so they can receive extra assistance to help them be successful.Parent-teacher conferences are fast approaching. All parents are invited to schedule appointments with their child’steachers. Conferences are held on November 12 and 19 from 3:30 pm until 7:05 pm. More details about conferences arelocated within this newsletter. Conferences are a great opportunity for parents to meet their children’s teachers and learnabout what is happening in class.Veteran’s Day is November 11. Student Council has prepared another impressive assembly for our students to honorour local heroes. Veterans are invited to take part in a breakfast followed by a presentation by guest speakers EricMansfield from channel 3 news and <strong>Copley</strong> alum/retired Army General Robert Gaylord. The day’s events will concludewith the raising of the flag in front of our building. Thank you to Mr. Zimmerer and student council for all your hard work.Sexting and the inappropriate use of electronic devices have recently been a hot topic in the media and for schools. TheSummit County Prosecutor’s office has offered our students and schools across Summit County an educational, real-life,eye-opening presentation on this topic. The purpose of the assembly is to educate students on the proper use of theirelectronic devices and to make them aware of the ramifications of their decisions in using these items. The prosecutor’soffice has offered Summit County schools their expertise because of the increased incidents of these issues in schoolsand society. Juniors and Seniors will take part in the program on November 23 while Freshman and Sophomores willparticipate on December 17. Please notify the main office in writing by November 16 if you do not want your childparticipating in this program. The leaves are falling, the air is becoming chillier, and the days are getting shorter. Winter will be upon us before weknow it. The approach of winter brings an end to our fall athletics and marching band seasons. I congratulate all of ourstudents for their successes through the opening of the school year. I wish all of our families a happy Thanksgiving!Sincerely,Aaron Sable,Principal<strong>Copley</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>

SCHOLARSHIPS AND FINANCIAL AIDMost scholarship monies are awarded by particular institutions that look for specific academic orfinancial aid requirements. While there are general scholarship programs open to everyone regardless ofthe institution they plan to attend, these generally hold less promise than those associated with a particularinstitution. When applying to any college or technical school, students shouldalways fill out the separate scholarship/financial aid application whichsome institutions provide as part of the application. All need-basedfinancial aid is granted only after parents complete a form called the FAFSA (FreeApplication for Federal Student Aid).Students are encouraged to file the FAFSA online atwww.fafsa.ed.gov between January 1 and February 15. Establish yourPersonal Identification Number (PIN) at www.pin.ed.gov now so you cansubmit your FAFSA by mid-February 2010 at the latest.APPRENTICESHIPSApprenticeships are standard in over 400 occupations. In an apprenticeship, the employeelearns a skilled trade through a combination of theoretical class work and on-the-jobtraining for a prescribed period of time (between 1 and 6 years). The programs vary inlength, rate of pay, and intensity between various trades, but upon completion, eachemployee becomes a journeyman, or skilled craftsman. Fields offering apprenticeshipsinclude: automotive mechanics, heating and air conditioning repair and installation, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, firefighting, and jewelry design.OPPORTUNITIES IN THE MILITARYEntering the military after high school is another avenue, and there are a number of options formilitary service. It can be a great way to start a career and learn discipline, but don’t expect it to be like inthe movies. In addition to a full-time stint, there are ROTC scholarships in over 2300 colleges, which willcover your tuition (and then some) in exchange for 10 hours weekly of classroom and field training, and 4years of active duty. Military recruiters from the Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines, and NationalGuard are in the Guidance Office on a regular basis. See your counselor for additionalinformation.SENIOR CONFERENCESThis important conference is the first graduation requirement of the year. If you have not yetaccomplished this task, schedule an appointment with your counselor TODAY! For seniorsplanning to attend college, there are two college entrance tests available. Check the colleges of yourchoice to learn which test is required. Applications for the SAT and ACT are available in theGuidance Office. Test dates are posted in the Guidance Office and on the applications. All test dateshave registration deadlines! The next SAT and ACT dates are December 5 & 12, respectively. Theregistration deadlines are October 30 & November 6. Some of the more selective colleges requireachievement tests (called the SAT II) in addition to the regular SAT and ACT tests. COMMON MYTHS ABOUT COLLEGEMyth #1 ~ It’s better to get good grades than take challenging courses in high school.Even modest success in advanced or accelerated courses indicates to a college that you seek andcan handle challenging courses, like those you will find in college. Taking challenging courses willhelp you get into a selective college.Myth #2 ~ You should go to a prestigious college. You should go to the college that“fits” you best. If it happens to be prestigious, that’s fine. However, fit has to dowith how you feel when you are on campus, the match with how you learn and howthe professors teach, and the academic pressure you can handle. If the college andyou are not a good match, you will be unhappy regardless of the prestige.Myth #3 ~ I need to decide on a career before I can choose acollege. College is a time to explore. Except in a few specific cases, you canchoose a major in your sophomore year and still complete the degree in fouryears. A surprising number of students discover their career while taking acourse they didn’t expect to enjoy. Don’t let well-meaning friends pressure youinto deciding on a major field or a career at this time. Take your time.Because of the volume of Internet information available to families aboutscholarships, we will list scholarships when agencies mail us a hard copyabout a specific opportunity. Otherwise, students and families shouldresearch:• The individual college’s or university’s website on Scholarship and Financial Aid.• gocollege.com • http://collegenet.com• fastweb.com • http://www.review.com• collegeboard.com • www.christiancollegeguide.net• scholarshipworkshop.com • http://www.uwaterloo.ca/canu• scholarship101.com • http://www.collegeview.com• Scholarships4Students.com • http://www.finaid.org (financial aid)• scholarships.com • http://www.petersons.com• http://fdncenter.org/yip/youth_scholarships.html• http://www.mycollegeguide.org/ACG/search.html• http://www.hillel.org (Jewish campus life)Inform your guidance counselor of any valuable scholarship websites you discover. Since most of these are one-time events, it is essential to mark your calendar early. Here is information about these significant events:ACT, SAT, and Possibly SAT IIThese tests should be taken for the first time during the second semester of the junior year. Somestudents elect to take these tests earlier during their high school experience. Registration may be done atany time prior to the deadlines established for each test. The following college representatives who visitCHS have told us that for the class of 2010, the optional writing section on the ACT and the mandatorywriting section on the SAT will be required as part of the college admission process: Case Western ReserveUniversity, College of Wooster, Denison University, Miami University, Oberlin College, Ohio ChristianUniversity, The Ohio State University, University of Cincinnati, University of Findlay, University of Toledo,Ohio University, and Kent State University.

To register for the ACT, SAT, or SAT II, (subject area tests), applications and practice materials are locatedin the Guidance Office. Additionally, both college testing organizations have web sites for on-lineregistration, more information about their testing programs, and a listing of test dates for the 2009-2010school year. The web site for the ACT is www.act.org and for the SAT, www.collegeboard.com. For thelatter, click on SAT since the College Board sponsors a number of testing programs.Use the CHS testing code, 361-685, to ensure your child’s scores will be sent to <strong>Copley</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>. When<strong>Copley</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> is a test center for the ACT in June or September, the test center code(ACT: 173800) will appear under the state of Ohio and the city of <strong>Copley</strong>. If the CHS testcenter code is not present, that is an indication that CHS is not a test site on that particulardate or that CHS has reached its capacity for that date. To guarantee your son or daughteris registered to take the ACT at CHS, we recommend that students apply at least three ormore months in advance. The ACT and SAT testing should be complete byDecember of a senior’s school year. Neither theACT nor the SAT is offered in the summer.ACT Prep ClassTwenty students completed our ACT Prep class this month. The next class will be offered in April and May to preparestudents for the June ACT.COLLEGE VISITS: SOPHOMORES AND JUNIORSStudents and their parents are encouraged to begin or continue visiting colleges and universitiesfor first-hand information and interaction. Teacher in-service days, spring break, or an occasionalpre-planned absence are excellent opportunities for college visits. Summer visits have value, too. However, during the summer, there are generally fewer students on campus and it is harder tounderstand how the campus operates during the regular school year. An official visit bookedthrough the college’s admissions office is more beneficial than a drive-through or walk-throughvisit. Seniors will make the best college application decisions if they visit a number of schools.COLLEGE PLANNING INFORMATION NIGHT: FEBRUARY 18, 2010The Guidance Department cordially invites parents of juniors and sophomores to attend CollegePlanning Night on February 18, 2010 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the CHS Auditorium. COPLEY MUSIC BOOSTERSNext Meeting November 3, 7pmCHS Main Office Conference RoomA Letter from the PresidentMusic Boosters,We have had a busy month! As I'm sure all of you know, the band received a "1" rating at our own Fall Ohio Music EducationAssociation (OMEA) <strong>Copley</strong> Marching Band Invitational held on Saturday, October 17. CHS Theatre Opens Season<strong>Copley</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> Theatre Production opens its 2009-2010 season with Michael Frayn’scomedy, Noises off!, directed by <strong>Copley</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>’s theatre director, Adrienne Scott. Calledthe funniest farce ever written, Noises off! most recently returned to Broadway with a manicmenagerie that sent reviewers searching for new accolades as a cast of itinerant actorsrehearsing a flop called NOTHING'S ON."The most dexterously realized comedy ever about putting on a comedy. A spectacularlyfunny, peerless backstage farce. This dizzy, well-known romp is festival of delirium."—TheNew York Times"Bumper car brilliance...If laughter is indeed the best medicine, NOISES OFF is worth itsweight in Cipro."—New York Daily News"The funniest farce ever written! Never before has side-splitting taken on a meaningdangerously close to the non-metaphorically medical."—New York Post"As side-splitting a farce as I have seen. Ever? Ever."—New York Magazine

Music News and NotesThe CHS Music Department has started off the school year with a non-stop performance schedule. The <strong>Copley</strong>Marching Indians hosted the 11 th Annual Invitational on Saturday, October 17. Not soon after, Friday, October23 brought NorthEast Ohio a live performance on Fox 8 News for the morning segment, “Kickin’ It WithKenny.” One could sense that News anchor Tracy McCool, 1989 <strong>Copley</strong> graduate, was extremely proud of herAlma Mater because of the way our great young ladies and gentlemen presented themselves and their music. As a result of the CHS Invitational, our band and colorguard earned a superior rating of a I to qualify for theState Event on Saturday, October 31 at Dublin Coffman stadium in the Columbus area. All students have put incountless hours of hard work and intense effort since July to make every week’s performance a success. Tenfootball games and a few weekend competitions would make some shudder at the workload. Great jobperforming at pre-games and halftimes all season! Next up, concert season. The CHS Concert Chorale has had a gauntlet of a fall season to work through beginning with the ChanticleerYouth Choral Festival on October 7. By invitation, our students spent nearly 12 hours of work in a master classand performance with the internationally recognized “Orchestra of Voices,” Chanticleer. Concert Choraleprepared two selections to perform independently and two pieces to sing in a mass choir setting with allparticipating groups. The evening performance shared the stage at St. Bernard’s Church in Akron with over250 singers. As the Executive Director of the Tuesday Musical Club wrote, “the combined voices of yourConcert Chorale were incredibly beautiful. I sincerely hope that the students knew what they were doing to thehearts of all of us in the audience; I believe it’s called a ‘transcendent’ moment.”Two weeks passed and the Concert Chorale again had a professional experience as we teamed together atRevere <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> for a workshop with Dr. Daniel Clark from Walsh University. It was a great evening ofsinging for each other and together with a collegiate director that was quite pleased and impressed with thepreparation and mature quality of the ensemble sound. Finally, the Fall Concert has come and gone for the Vocal Music Department on October 27. The Men’sChorus, Women’s Chorus and Concert Chorale gave fabulous performances of some truly challengingrepertoire. As this fall season comes to a close, we hope to see more of you as audience members at theDecember concerts for both Band and Choir.December 9 - 7:30<strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> ChoirsDecember 11 – 7:30 <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> Bands
