Copley High SchoolL e t t e r f r o m t h e P r i n c i p a lSmoke signalsDecember 2011/January 2012About a month ago I attended aconference in which the featuredspeaker was a technology integrationexpert. Although his main focus wasexamining strategies to utilizetechnology to enrich instruction inschools, he also provided some userfriendlytips for parents as we parentin a world that is very different fromthe one in which we grew up.Remember when we were young anddid something embarrassing ordownright dumb? I did a lot of thosethings, yet the only way anyonewould find out about them is to seekout my friends from when I wasgrowing up. Not the case today. The latter for today’s generationwould be instantly posted toFacebook, uploaded to YouTube,Tweeted, texted, blogged or Wiki’dabout for not just their friends, yetthe world to see. While ourgeneration created funny stories thatare the source of laughs at gettogetherstoday, our students arewriting a digital legacy that will followthem forever. Here are somegeneral tips to assist you and yourchild in managing their “digitallegacy”.Children should not have aprivate life, which many dothrough social media. If theywant to keep a part of theirlife private, have them keep anold-fashioned journal, one thatis not posted to a website.Help them to understand thatnothing is private and evenwhen you hit delete, therecord can still be found. As a parent, use the “GoogleAlerts” feature to have anautomatic e-mail sent to youwhen something with yourchild’s name is posted on-line.Develop agreed upon rules fortechnology posting, such asrules for posting pictures andvideos, as well as rules for textand chat language.Follow the golden rule ofposting…do not post or sayanything digitally that wouldembarrass you if your familyread it or you would not say inreal life.It is my hope that these guidelinescan assist your child at this point intheir life, as well as ensuring that theyhave a positive digital legacy that willbe examined as they enter collegeand the work force.Although it truly is a busy time, Iencourage you to take a few minutesto relax and enjoy one of the manyexciting events at Copley High Schoolin December and January. As youknow, we are proud to have both anoutstanding instrumental and vocalmusic program at CHS. Although this may notbe an “exciting event”, it will beinformative and worthwhile whetherthis is your first or last college-boundstudent. As you can see, there willbe a great deal of excitement andactivity at CHS as we end thecalendar year. Your continuedsupport and attendance at eventssuch as this means a great deal to ourstudents and our school. This year, winter break will run fromDecember 19 th - January 2 nd and oncewe return, the pace does not slowdown. In this issue, itis important to remind everyone of afew important pieces of information.Student MedicationAs we continue to move forward thisyear, we need to remind ourstudents and families of our rules forusing medication at school. Therules for using both prescription andover the counter medications arelisted below.Students who have to takeprescription medication musthave a form completed andsigned by their physician.Students who require over thecounter medication during theschool day must have a formcompleted and signed byparent/guardian.All medications must be left inthe Clinic inside the GuidanceOffice.Students are not permitted topossess any medication duringschool hours.Medications in the possessionof students will be consideredcontraband and a disciplinaryconsequence will be assigned.Students may carry their ownprescription asthma inhalersand Epi-pens.Follow these rules will help to ensurethat everyone is safe and aware ofthe expectation for students whoneed to use medication at school.TardinessWe are continuing to work toreduce the numbers of tardies toclass and lunch throughout the highschool. Students who are tardy totheir classes and lunch not only missinstructional time but often disruptother classes as they travelthroughout the building. In an effortto correct this issue we will beholding random hall sweeps duringvarious mods of the school day. Wefeel that it is important to inform ourstudents and families of thesenecessary sweeps. Students who arecaught in a hall sweep will face(continued on page 3)2

December 2011Dear Parents:Senate Bill 140 has presented a variety of educational options. One section of this bill is of immediateinterest to you as a parent of a high school student (grades 9-12). This option is called the Post SecondaryEducation Option Program. The intent of this law is to create a variety of liberal learning activities for all students. The proposed rulesestablish procedures for the awarding of high school graduation credit and/or college credit to high schoolstudents enrolled in college courses. College can include community colleges, technical colleges, or regularfour-year universities. Under certain plans, students may take advantage of free college tuition while otherplans would require parents to pay.The legislature requires school districts to inform students and their parents of this program by March 1 st ofeach year. Any student who desires to pursue this option must: 1) bring his or her parent to anappointment with his/her guidance counselor, or to the Post Secondary Education Optionprogram in the Copley High School Media Center at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 23, 2012;2) take the ACT in February if he/she has not previously taken this test; and 3) meet theguidelines established by the college. In order to participate in the Post Secondary EducationOptions Program in the fall of 2012 or spring of 2013, by March 30, 2012, a student must informa guidance counselor of his or her intent to participate in the program. To register for the February 11 th ACT, go to www.actstudent.org by January 13 th . Practice tests are availablein the media center, guidance office, and online. If you would like more information about the Post Secondary Education Program, please feel free to call thehigh school guidance office at 664-4827.Cameron M. RybaPrincipal4

(Orientation, parking, and transportation fees are not covered.)Courses successfully completed under Option B will receive high school credit for graduation as appropriate.3. School districts must award comparable credit for high school graduation, in terms of quantity and quality, forsuccessfully completed college work.4. The Copley-Fairlawn Board of Education has determined that a student enrolled in college courses under theguidelines of Option B will be given high school credit for course enrollment, if the student successfully completes thecollege course. It will not be calculated in the student’s high school grade point average.5

PROGRAM ADVANTAGESExpands the curriculum available to studentsProvides opportunities for students to study in depth those areas of special interest or needAllows a student to earn college credit at no expense to parents in Option BGives the student an opportunity to make some decisions about college through actual experiencesAllows the student to earn high school and college credit at the same timeAllows the student a gradual transition to university schoolingEncourages parents to become involved earlier in the planning of a college careerAllows the potential for a student to earn an Associate Degree as well as a high school diplomaAllows the student access to university counseling servicesPOTENTIAL RISKS AND CONSEQUENCES1. Students will have an increased responsibility for learning, increased travel time, and increased time for study.2. Students could have increased financial obligations for their education if they choose Option A or if the collegecourse requires special tools or equipment. Impressionable 16 and 17 year olds will be in a non-structured setting on the college campus with older students.5. Students who fail or withdraw from a college course may jeopardize their high school graduation. A student whofails to complete a college course or who withdraws inappropriately from a college course will be required to reimbursethe school district the amount of money equal to the amount subtracted from the District’s State Foundationmonies. The grade earned will be noted as a Fail and will not be calculated in determining the student’s highschool grade point average. The failing mark, however, will be included in the student’s college grade point average. If the student does not pass at least five (5) credits and earn a grade point average of 1.0 for the quarter, he/she willnot be eligible to participate in non-graded extra-curricular activities. If a student’s grade point average falls betweena 1.0 and 1.999 for the quarter, he/she must attend a formal academic support program provided by Copley-Fairlawn City Schools.6. Students and parents participating in this program assume full social and academic responsibilities for the studentsenrolled.ADMINISTRATIVE GUIDELINES1. Upon entrance to the program, a student must elect Option A or B as described on page one. If a student enrolls inthe same university after high school graduation, the university must award full credit for all courses successfullycompleted under either Option A or B.2. Academic credit for high school graduation will be matched on a course for course basis. College credits will beconverted to Carnegie units. No student can schedule more than seven Carnegie units in a school year.3. Students who meet the federal income guidelines for Free and Reduced Lunch and who require financial assistancewith transportation will be required to complete a request form for reimbursement. Choose an occupation because you like the work, not solely because ofthe rewards in money or prestige.2. Choose an occupation that will use your abilities.3. Choose an occupation in which there is likely to be an active demandfor workers when you are ready to go to work.4. Do not choose an occupation just because a friend or someone elseyou admire chose it.5. Avoid occupations that require abilities you don’t have.6. Don’t confuse interest and ability.7. Before making a final choice of occupation, find out all the things youmight have to do in it. Determine which of these will take most of yourtime.8. Don’t expect to find a job in which you will never have to do anythingyou dislike.9. Don’t stay permanently in a job in which you dislike most of the thingsyou have to do.10. Beware of biased information from recruiters and other sources.11. Take all the advice people offer you, and then act on your judgment.12. Remember Robert Louis Stevenson’s advice: “To know what youprefer, instead of humbly saying ‘Amen’ to what the world tells you youought to prefer, is to have kept your soul alive.”OUR BEST WISHES FOR A HAPPY WINTER BREAK!Jenny Morganti Toni Ehrman Corinne Magensky18

Riley Grant was selected 2nd Team All-State. In cross-country,sophomore, Gabi Rodriguez, qualified for the regionals, but no Copley athlete had a moreprominent fall than senior Nick Pupino. Nick placed 1 st in the Suburban League, 1 st in theAkron District, 2 nd in the Regional, and 4 th in the State cross-country meet. Born oftradition, nurtured by pride, Copley athletes continue to grow their Indian legacy.THANK YOU to all the Cross Country runners and parents!!
