Department UpdatesVery shortly,students willbegin signing upfor classes for next school year. Did youknow <strong>Copley</strong> has a class in Networking?What about learning how to Program acomputer, or design a Web Page? Theseare all courses offered at <strong>Copley</strong> HighSchool.T h e C i s c oN e t w o r k i n gA c a d e m yprogram is acomplete, foursemesterprogramdesigned to teachstudents the skillsneeded to plan,design, build,maintain andsupport small tomedium-sized computer networks. TheNetworking Academy program featureshands-on, project-driven training in highdemandjob skills. Students successfullycompleting all four semesters will have theopportunity to enter the workforce and/orfurther their education and training in thecomputer-networking field. Aftercompletion, students will have theopportunity to take the CCNA exam,qualifying them as a Cisco CertifiedNetworking Associate (CCNA). Inaddition to learning a valuable skill, youcan also get college credit for this class atThe University of Akron. Each semesterclass taken at <strong>Copley</strong> High School canqualify for three credit hours at TheUniversity of Akron. If a studentcompletes all four semesters at <strong>Copley</strong>, itis possible they will be able to obtain 12credit hours of college credit. This is theequivalent of a semester of classes at TheUniversity of Akron!! Students interestedin this course should have skills in basiccomputer software (such as MicrosoftWord).In addition, we offertwo semesters ofWeb Design at<strong>Copley</strong>. Thesecourses will teachyou the basics ofWeb Design, usingboth Dream Weaverand ExpressionsWeb. You also getan opportunity tolearn about photo enhancementprograms, and animation. In the secondsemester course, students compete withother schools in the area in a web designcompetition. Winners of the competitionattend a dinner and win a cash prize!Interested in learningC o m p u t e rProgramming? Weoffer that class too.This class uses thelatest programminglanguage, VisualBasic. Students learnhow to design a userinterface, createWindows and Web applications, developmobile applications for smart phones andlearn how to program with an interactive3D graphics Program. I can give you additionalinformation and show you a quick tour ofour lab.Math DepartmentThe mathematics department proudlyannounces the success of the AdvancedPlacement (AP) program in the 2010 – 11school year. All nineteen students whoattempted the AP Calculus test earned thehighest score possible, a 5. Nineteen ofthe twenty-nine students who attemptedthe AP Statistics test earned a 5, while sixmore students earned a 4 and theremaining students earned a 3. Studentswho score at least a 3 on any AP test areeligible to earn college credit. Thestudents did a great job!It is a time of change in mathematicsstandards at the state level. The state hasadopted the multi-state curriculum knownas the Common Core standards to be fullyimplemented by the 2014 – 2015 schoolyear. The mathematics department isworking diligently on curriculum reviewand textbook adoption to meet theneeds of all <strong>Copley</strong> High School students.The department plans next spring topropose to the Board of Education whichmaterials and books should be used.Finally, the math department hasscheduled several mathematicscompetitions for student participation.The first of which, the Ohio Math League,is currently underway. Thesecompetitions are held one Tuesday amonth immediately after school in rooms252 and 253, and last for a half an hour.The remaining dates for the Ohio MathLeague are December 13, January 10,February 14, and March 13. Thedepartment will also host the AmericanMathematics Competition (AMC 12) onFebruary 7, 2012. Over 100 <strong>Copley</strong>students will be invited to participate.Then, on Saturday February 25, 2012<strong>Copley</strong> will be a host site for the OhioCouncil of Mathematics (OCTM)Competition, and twenty-five studentsfrom <strong>Copley</strong> will be invited to participate.If students are interested in participating inany of these competitions, then theyshould contact their math teacher or Mr.S t e p h e n s , m a t h e m a t i c sCurriculum Development Coordinator.19
