She didn'tknow if they had escaped, bought their freedom, been given their freedom or what. Also, I think Imight have been swayed to inflate my NA guess by Martinez-Cruzado's study showing 60% ofPuerto Ricans have Native American mtDNA. I am suprised that I am more African and less NAthan I thought. I have a very light brown complection--that in Puerto Rico we call white--withfreckles, and have dark brown wavy/slightly curly kinda frizzy hair. Out of all of my cousins, meand 2 others are the only very light brown ones (in PR we call our complextion white). The other30 or so are all varied shades of medium to dark brown (we call that trigueno), including mybrother. One cousin is really dark and calls herself "la Negra." Our hair varies from bone straightto moderatly tight curls without regard to skin color. I assumed that because I have lots ofmedium brown skinned cousins with straight hair that I would be more NA. My dad's family isfrom Rio Piedras. My maternal grandfather is from Morovis. My maternal grandmother is fromBayamon, but her mom was from Lares and her dad was from Toa Baja. (My results arebelow under Guest "SL"). The test indicating IE affiliation was almost identical to the expectedresults. However, I was expecting that the test would show up around 50% NA. Interesting thatthe test should come up 25% NA and 21% EA, instead of 50% NA (25% added to 21% is 46%,which is close to 50%). My paternal Grandmother is of known half Spanish and Portuguese andhalf Native American (Pueblo Tribes), and we have paper documentation of this side of my familygoing back to the 1700s. It is highly unlikely that she is of East Asian descent. The 21% EA is mostlikely Native American, based on the low genetic distance between Native Americans and EastAsians (as published on the AncestrybyDNA website).
