An Introduction to WalsallWalsall Conduits started designing and manufacturing electricalequipment for hazardous areas in the 1930’s. In those daysthe company concentrated on equipment for undergroundapplications, particularly coal mining. The products weredesignated flameproof for what is now known as Group1 applications.As petro-chemical and pharmaceutical operations weredeveloped through the later half of the 20th Century Walsalldesigned and manufactured products for above groundapplications particularly in the fields of switch gear and motorcontrol gear.In 2000 the company was renamed Walsall Ltd and began anew phase of development by widening the product rangesignificantly.From inception to the present day Walsall products havebecome specified in all parts of the world. The name Walsallhas become synonymous with hazardous area electricalequipment and its products can be seen working everywherewhere explosive hazards exist.Walsall has always been known for the robustness of itsproducts. It is well known that Walsall products were built tolast and the company is still called out to help with installationsperforming after more than 50 years. This philosophy ofbuilding the strongest and safest equipment runs right throughthe company’s operations.All products are approved by the British Notified BodiesBaseefa and SIRA , and the manufacturing facility isATEX/UL/GOST/ISO9001:2000 approved. A source of ignition of sufficient energy and /or a rise in temperature.What is an explosive atmosphere?An explosive atmosphere is created when air and an flammable mediummix such that a rise in temperature or an electrical spark produces anexplosion.What is a potentially explosive atmosphere?An atmosphere is defined as potentially explosive when in its normalstate it is not explosive but there exists the possibility that in abnormalcircumstances it will become explosive. For example in the case ofa gas leak or the vapourisation of a fluid leak.Ignition EnergyAn explosive atmosphere needs a minimum energy for ignition.The energy produced by arcs and sparks are many times greater than thisminimum.Self Ignition TemperatureAn explosive atmosphere can self ignite if the local temperature risesabove the so-called self ignition temperature. This temperature isdifferent for different flammable mediums.
