TECHNICAL INFORMATION■ Integral Coil Features ■Integral coils must be installed at a maximum of5 lb-ft after the spark plug has been installed andproperly torqued. It is very important to follow coilmanufacturer instructions for tightening. Over-torquecan cause damage to coil and/or plug, resulting inpossible engine damage. The "T" type and "G" type"T" Type Spark PlugsA "T" type spark plug is shown inFigure 11. Typical plugs are theRTM77N, RTM78N, RTB78N, RTB80N,RTL85G, RTN79G, TJ83, RTW80N andRTW83F. These coils require that theshell turnover has a 13/16" thread toaccommodate the female threaded coil.spark plugs described below are designed to be usedin conjunction with ignition systems utilizing anintegral (transformer) coil. These plugs along withthe use of integral coils have been approved byCanadian Standards Association for Class 1, Group D,Division 2 hazardous-location service."G" Type Spark PlugsA "G" type spark plug is shown inFigure 12. Typical plugs are theRGC80N, RGC80F and RGC77N inthe 7/8" line and the RGM86N inthe 18mm line. These utilize a 1"upper female threaded shell.FIGURE 11FIGURE 12■ Shielded Extension Features and Installation ■Typical Shielded Spark PlugShielded ExtensionTeflon Ignition RodThe 1/40 brass rod or AmericanBosch high ohmic resistor is notsupplied by Champion. The following have a 2" well and require a brass rodadapter: RHM78PP, RHM78WPCC, RHW77N, RHW78N, RHW80N, HW83F.■ Install spark plug and tighten to recommended torque.■ Take center rod and install spring assembly and rubber grommetwith at least 1-1/2" of center rod extending from bottom.■ Insert center rod with spring assembly and grommet intoshielded spark plug.■ Install shielded extension over the center rod pushing thegrommet and spring assembly down to the shell. This willensure the center rod is in contact with the terminal of thespark plug.■ Tighten shielded extension to a maximum of 5 lb-ft.29
