It is a very excitingtime in your life as you begin your College Career. <strong>Southern</strong> <strong>Polytechnic</strong> hasover 120 student organizations that you can get involved in that will helpenhance your college experience.The mission of Fraternity and Sorority Life is to enhance the quality of studentlife at SPSU by empowering members of the Greek community through education,communication, and the promotion of values-based decision making.Fraternity and Sorority Life is one of the many ways in which students cancontribute to the <strong>University</strong> community. Fraternity and Sorority members are committed to academic excellence, communityservice, and philanthropy. Greek membership results in lifelong friendships and provides leadership opportunitiesthat can assist students in their academic and professional endeavors. greek pillarsBrotherhood/SisterhoodJoining a fraternity or sorority means becoming part of a family. Greek brothersand sisters provide a “home away from home” for SPSU students that offerssupport and guidance.LeadershipThe Fraternity and Sorority Community provides opportunities for both leadershipand development. Each year members of the Greek community are sent to variousregional and national leadership conferences. Numerous leadership opportunitiesare available through the chapters and governing councils.ScholarshipScholarship is an important aspect of the Fraternity and SororityCommunity at SPSU. Chapters provide academic resources,study sessions, scholarship awards, and other incentives tohelp members achieve academically. National research hasalso demonstrated that fraternity and sorority members aremore likely to complete a college degree than non-members.Service/PhilanthropyService is a fundamental component of the Fraternity and SororityCommunity. Each fraternity and sorority chapter has a philanthropyproject that they support by giving both time and donations throughoutthe year. Greek organizations support a variety of different philanthropicand service projects in Marietta, the Metro Atlanta area, and nationally.SocialChapters and members create lifelong friendships and memories at many social events. Organizationshost brotherhood and sisterhood gatherings, retreats, mixers, and formals. These opportunities allowchapter members to establish relationships and enhance their skills in communication and team building.3

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Delta SigmaTheta Sorority, Inc., Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc., Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.,Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. NPHCpromotes interaction through forums, meetings and other mediums for the exchange of information andengages in cooperative programming and initiatives through various activities and functions.On May 10, 1930, on the campus of Howard <strong>University</strong>, in Washington DC, the National Pan-Hellenic Councilwas formed as a permanent organization with the following charter members: Omega Psi Phi and Kappa AlphaPsi Fraternities, and Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta and Zeta Phi Beta Sororities. In 1931, Alpha PhiAlpha and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternities joined the Council. Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority joined in 1937 and IotaPhi Theta Fraternity completed the list of member organizations in 1997.The stated purpose and mission of the organization in 1930 was “Unanimity of thought and action as faras possible in the conduct of Greek letter collegiate fraternities and sororities, and to consider problemsof mutual interest to its member organizations.” Early in 1937, the organization was incorporated underthe laws of the <strong>State</strong> of Illinois and became known as “The National Pan-Hellenic Council, Incorporated.”On October 14, 2010 <strong>Southern</strong> <strong>Polytechnic</strong> chartered our chapter of NPHC.10

All events will be heldon-campus, many at the chapter’s house. These events vary by organization but are all great ways to meet themembership and for the members to meet you. It’s important to visit all the chapters multiple times so that youare confident with your decision to accept a bid. A bid is an invitationto join the chapter. An individual can receive a bid from all seven chapters but can only acceptone bid, so it is important you know which group is the best fit.16
