Hundreds of parents were on hand in the Campbell Centre last
Friday to see the work of our Middle School students at the Science
Fair. Nick Erzetic is pictured here with his experiment: Which liquid
will cause a nail to rust the fastest?
Staying calm under pressure
In hindsight, it probably wasn't a book I should have bought to read on the plane back from Melbourne
– Inside QF32. Not that it wasn't a fascinating read, but it was a little like showing the 1970s disaster
classic Airport as the inflight movie, the timing could have been better.
Inside QF32 is the story of a 2010 Qantas long-haul flight from Singapore to Sydney that could have
become one of the world's worst ever air disasters…except for the skills and training of an experienced
flight crew, led by Captain Richard de Crespigny.
When a sudden mid-air explosion shattered one of the engines of the state-of-the-art Qantas A380, the
lives of 469 people were at risk. The sound of the explosion was like a car back-firing but the 120 lights
that lit up in the plane's cockpit indicating what was wrong showed it was anything but a minor problem.
Despite the chaos and what could have happened, Captain de Crespigny remained calm. Instead of
concentrating on the potential disaster, he chose to concentrate on what he had…and what he had
was a plane that could still fly.
I related that story to students at Assembly on Tuesday. With exams imminent, I thought the Captain's
mindset was one that could well be adopted by our young men. Sometimes self-doubt can take over.
But instead of thinking about what we haven't got, we should be concentrating on what we have.
It was the mental attitude, the training and the ability to put those skills into action under pressure that
allowed disaster to be averted on that flight to Sydney.
Staying calm under pressure (cont’d)
It is the mental application, the hard work and the preparation of students that will ensure they too can perform under pressure. Most of us won't
have the opportunity to train in a flight simulator but being prepared, ensuring the right mindset going into exams is crucial to success.
A quote from Captain de Crespigny sums it up:
"I thought, 'Could I have done something better? Should I have done something differently? Today I don't think I'd change anything. I'm very
pleased with that.''
If your son comes out of his exams thinking the same thing, ie that he has done the very best that he can, then all the hard work beforehand has
been worthwhile.
Scattered throughout this issue of Terrace News are tips from various teachers about how to be best prepared for exams. For those who have
studied, prepared and are confident in themselves and what they have done, the results will come.
There were no real surprises in the Queensland Budget for non-government schools. Funding has been effectively frozen.
Queensland Catholic Education Commission Executive Director Mr Mike Byrne said the freeze would be felt across the entire sector. Catholic
schools receive around 20 per cent of their total funding from the State Government. He has warned of pressure on fees.
With the Federal Government still to release details on Gonski, the funding situation remains uncertain.
This is the final weekend for Term 3 sports Basketball, Rugby and CIC Tennis. I would like to thank the staff, parents, friends and Old Boys who
have trained, managed, officiated and supported our students. Their work has enabled the boys to train for and play organised sport outside of
school hours in a safe and enjoyable environment. I know the boys appreciate what you do.
This weekend also is the last occasion on which many of our Senior students will pull on the Red and Black on a sporting field. For some it has
been eight years representing Terrace on the sporting field and I'm sure there will be a touch of sadness, especially those not continuing on with
sport in Term 4.
For the younger students, if not already into Track and Field, they are probably anticipating Term 1 2013 in Rowing and Cricket through training,
specialist clinics and camps which are on the horizon.
It is important to remember the excitement and participation in new activities needs to be balanced with other commitments, especially academic
and especially at this time of year.
Our Year 10 students are in the middle of Immersions and reports are that they are going well, that the boys are participating whole-heartedly and
everyone is enjoying the experience.
One of our Timorese visitors, Eliana and her father Silvero, returned home last week after her surgery, travelling with our Year 10 Immersion
group. Afonso also is doing well but is expected to remain in Brisbane recuperating for a few more weeks.
Finally, congratulations to our CIC athletes led by Co-captains Jacob Ruff and Guss Daley and Vice-captains Matthew Keatinge and Nick Erzetic,
who finished second in the Championship after two days of competition. To record 71 personal bests from 119 events is exceptional – a
tribute to the hard work of the boys and of their coaches, led by Mr Chris Humphrys. Mr Humphrys has a full report on the performances inside
today's Terrace News.
With best wishes
College Dean Mr C Mayes
Co-curricula activities are an extra opportunity for students to be involved in activities that they enjoy and in some instances, in which they excel.
Therefore sporting opportunities offered to the students by the College on Saturday are meant to be, most of all, an enjoyable time for the players.
Likewise this experience is meant to be enjoyable to the College staff, coaching staff, match officials, parents and spectators.
At College Assembly, we spend a good deal of time talking to the boys not only about enjoying themselves but also making the occasion enjoyable
for those around them. This means respecting all officials and opposition players. One can still be very competitive and demonstrate the simple
traits of sportsmanship.
As a College community we would like to think that adults at the sporting events model these traits to our young men. Unfortunately on Saturday, I
witnessed events at one of the Under 16 games when this was not the case.
Whilst I thought that our young men showed great discipline and restraint on the field, unfortunately this was not the case with a small number of
spectators. I appreciate that this was not simply a case of spectators (or players) from our College.
However, I would remind parents that any issues that occur on the field are matters to be dealt with by the coaches and College staff. If there are
any parents who have concerns regarding any aspect of the game, they should contact staff and the coach from our College. Under no circumstances
should they take it upon themselves to approach staff and coaches from other schools.
Match day incidents are dealt with by schools and officials in an organised manner. Match officials give their time to assist us in offering sporting
opportunities to our young men. The first rule of sportsmanship is about showing respect to these officials. Their enjoyment from the game can be
quickly soured by inappropriate and discouraging comments from the sideline. Demonstrating respect and sportsmanship is a key component of
humility; one of the traits of a Terrace Gentleman.
Staffing - Yesterday, at morning tea, we had a staff gathering to farewell and thank Mr Rod Patch for his many years of service at Terrace. Rod
has been a member of our teaching staff for 21 years. A number of these years were spent as a Head of Faculty for Society and the Environment.
Rod has just completed a period of long service Leave and is leaving the teaching profession. His dedication to teaching and commitment to the
College has been very much appreciated by the Terrace Community and we wish him well in the future.
Final weeks of term - A gentle reminder to students: Most ambitions are not accomplished by accident but by careful planning. Exams are now
upon us and it is most important that there has been careful and considered planning and action set in place to ensure that these results will be a
true indication of each boy’s abilities. From a parent’s perspective, it also is most likely a time of constant reminders and guidance to ensure that
the young men can develop habits and practices to deal with these more stressful exam times.
Dean of Studies Mrs J Quinn
Exams are now under way. Listed below are some strategies that should be helpful to students:
1. The night before the exam make sure you have checked and packed the required equipment.
2. The night before go over rules, dates or any other rote learning that is required.
3. The night before mentally list every topic and key points in the topics that you have covered in the exam subject during the term.
4. Make sure you get adequate sleep the night before the exam.
5. On the morning of the exam, make sure you have a good breakfast.
6. On arrival at school do not get caught up in ‘panic conversation’ that could undermine your confidence.
7. Plan your strategy for time allocation prior to the exam.
8. Be positive and confident! If you have worked hard during the term this is the time when you deserve to be rewarded. Go into the exam feeling
strong and confident – do not doubt yourself.
9. During perusal read the paper carefully. Use a highlighter to remind or make yourself aware of key points.
10. During the exam be aware of the time. There is nothing more frustrating than not being able to answer a question when you know how to do it!
11. Work hard for the whole duration of the exam. Check, check and re-check your work until it is time to hand in your paper.
Remember the 3 ‘Ps’ – Prepare, practise and persevere.
In my years as the Dean of Studies, the one aspect of examinations that always causes the greatest disappointment with students is not managing
time well, resulting in questions being left unanswered. The loss of marks, when the knowledge is known, is always a frustrating experience for
students. It is imperative that students are aware of the time allocated to the respective exam and adapt their working speed to match this. I often
suggest to students that homework and classroom speed is about 50 per cent and exam speed should be around 75 per cent. Students need to
be absolutely focussed upon the task ahead.
Our Year 10 students have now experienced almost two weeks of Immersions. Reports to date indicate the boys and staff are greatly enjoying this
very unique learning experience. A reminder that reports will be posted home on Friday 12 October, the Friday of the first week in Term 4.
Next term, both Years 11 and 12 students will receive updated estimated OP scores based on the latest results. House Deans will pass on this
information to Year 11 students and the respective CLT academic mentors to Year 12 students.
Naplan results of this year for Years 5, 7 and 9 students will be passed onto schools early next week.
I encourage all our students to give their very best this week and next week and move into the holidays confident that they could do no more to
produce their best result.
Dean of Students Mr D Carroll
Vocation exercise - Last week during a Theology class all Years 11 and 12 students were spoken to by Father Morgan Batt. Father Morgan is
the archdiocese's vocations officer. I would be telling lies if I wasn't a little concerned about how the students were going to behave when they
found out that their guest speaker was seeking them to consider becoming a priest.
I am ashamed to admit that I went around before school and told the boys that I needed them to behave during the presentation. In reality I undersold
both groups as they managed the presentation brilliantly. They were what I described in last weeks Terrace News - true Terrace Gentlemen.
They did have a little help though. Fr Morgan was the most amazing speaker with the most amazing story to tell. He knew exactly what to say and
was well versed in good teaching techniques. His amazing passion for his role as a priest was inspirational to all who heard him speak. His message
was extremely relevant to young people and I am sure he stirred something in the most adamant non-believers.
For me the learning was about faith – sometime you just need to have a little faith and things will work out well. Thanks Fr Morgan I learned a valuable
lesson and loved every second of your presentation.
Exams - All students are in the midst of their Term 3 exams. Please ensure that uniform standards are maintained during this time. For older students
this means that they need to be clean shaven when they arrive at school. Year 12 students are not permitted to drive to the College during
exams. They must wear school uniform if they are on campus during exam block.
Term 4 - Term 4 commences on Monday October 8. Please make sure your son has the correct uniform and that his hair matches College expectations.
Middle Schooling Mrs T Kotzas & Mr M Stewart
It's hard to believe that we found ourselves welcoming our Year 5 recruits for 2013 last Thursday evening. As usual, the highlight of the night was
the standout performance of two of our current Year 5s Angus White and Tom Burns. Angus and Tom provided a realistic and thoroughly entertaining
description of life as a Year 5 boy. We look forward to welcoming our new Year 8 students in the first week of Term 4.
The next morning, we were up bright and early to set up for the annual Middle School Science Fair. The fair showcases projects completed by
boys in Years 5-7 and we were once again, astounded by the quality of the research, discussion and presentation around numerous topics. Congratulations
to Alex Wobcke (Year 7), Henry Silvey and Emil Cooper (Year 6) and James Hurst, Michael Gambaro, Lachlan Mitchell and
Alexander Sullivan (Year 5) on their winning presentations. A special thanks must go to Mr Glenn Brown and his team who worked tirelessly in
setting up both the Orientation evening and the Science Fair.
Years 8 and 9 students commence examinations this Friday. Walking around the corridors it is apparent that the boys are working hard, undertaking
good revision and utilising their class time efficiently in the lead up to their examinations. We wish all our students in the Middle School every
success for the remainder of the term.
Congratulations to Jacob Ruff (Captain) and the rest of the CIC Athletics team on their strong performances at the CIC Championships. The
team achieved a number of personal bests. Thanks go to the coaching staff for their hard work and dedication this season.
Humanities Mrs S Cook
Assignments have been a major focus for students studying Humanities subjects, particularly in Years 11 and 12. Research, planning and organisation
are the key to success in completing assignment work of a high standard. Students are expected to work independently in completing these
tasks but these are skills that will assist in their desire to continue further study at tertiary level.
Modern History students have completed their major research assignment this term. Year 12 students investigated the impact of 'Power' in the
Iraq war and Year 11 students investigated the origins of Zionism and Palestinian Nationalism. Students were asked to present their findings in
the form of a documentary using Imovie or Movie Maker. The students are to be commended on the outstanding presentations that demonstrated
their skills to evaluate historical evidence in a multi-modal format.
Year 12 Legal Studies students have been working hard this term on their Independent Study. They have been able to choose a contemporary
Australian legal issue that interests them. Some of the interesting topics selected by the Year 12 students this year include racial vilification, glassing,
mandatory sentencing, whaling, international parental abduction, workplace bullying, sterilisation of intellectually disabled children and use of
tasers within the police force.
Studying Economics is definitely a step in the right direction when heading to the top of the business world. The recently released Suncorp Bank
Power Index provided a snapshot of Australia's business elite. The most common undergraduate degree for CEOs was a degree in economics,
followed by commerce and then engineering. The survey found that the average of Australia's top CEOs was 53, with News Corp boss Rupert
Murdoch the oldest at 81. Of the top 50 CEOs, only two – Westpac chief Gail Kelly and Sydney Airport boss Kerrie Mather – are women.
Finally, Mr Rod Patch is leaving Terrace after 21 years at the College. For 10 of those years, Rod has been the Head of the Humanities Faculty
and also, coordinator of Legal Studies. Rod has been a Barrett House tutor for all his time at Terrace and will be fondly remembered by many of
the students of Barrett House. We wish Rod and his wife, Jackie all the best in this new stage of their lives and we sincerely thank Rod for all his
contributions to the College over the years.
Director of Culture Mr N Wharton
I would like to thank all the people who have supported our program over the past term. We have had a good year and I am sure we will finish
strongly in Term 4.
A reminder for some events that are coming up in Term 4:
Wednesday 11 October – Chamber Music Concert at Waterford Place
 Tuesday 16 October – Year 12 Music Principal's Lunch, Founder's Room
Friday 19 October – Jazz Night at The Tivoli
Our annual Jazz Night at The Tivoli is an amazing night of music, dance and an example of the high calibre of music provided by our students. If
last year was an indication of a successful night, this year will be even better and I encourage people to purchase their tickets via College Events.
Music Mr B Bobart
On Sunday 2 September the Terrace Saxophone Ensemble performed in the Open High School Ensemble section of the Annual Clarinet and
Saxophone Society competition. They performed extremely well and earned third place. The members of the ensemble were Year 11 students
Joseph Cabonce, James Lee, Thomas Nottingham, Rudi Scarpa, William Kowalski, and Year 9 student Joel Aspinal.
Our Drumline again provided spirit for our First XV Rugby team against BGS last Saturday. Most members of this ensemble are in Year 8 and are
improving rapidly. It is great to see and hear their progress and I thank them for their commitment this year.
On Wednesday 10 October the Terrace Big Band will perform for the Year 8 Orientation. This is an important event for the College as new students
to Terrace in 2013 will get to hear our ensemble perform and promote Terrace Music.
Also on Thursday evening in the same week will be the final Chamber Music Concert for the year. This is a opportunity for students to develop
their performing skills in smaller groups.
Major events for Terrace Music are the Jazz Night, Celebration of Excellence Evening and the Middle School Concert. Tickets for the Jazz Night
are available through the College Events. It is a great night and you will be astounded by the quality of performances. Thanks for your support of
Terrace Music and best of luck to the students for their exams.
Chess Ms T Morgan-Pertus
Last Friday was a very pleasant evening as our players competed against BGS. Although their teams were extremely challenging, four of our
players won games. Because many of our players were away on Immersion, we had to invite other students to take their place. These students
willingly participated in the competition and I congratulate them for their School Spirit.
Dean of Identity Mr C Ryan
Mr Peter Chapman, Mr Anthony Hayward, Mr David Tubb and I attended the inaugural Edmund Rice Education Australia Congress in Melbourne
over the weekend. It was a most interesting and energizing experience. EREA is now five years into the new story of lay governance of
Catholic Schools in the Edmund Rice Tradition since the Christian Brothers made the brave and visionary decision to gradually evolve towards
other ministries. Representatives from our schools throughout Australia and New Zealand were present as were many Christian Brothers, representatives
of Catholic Education bodies throughout the country and international guests from India, Africa, South America, North America Ireland
among others. It was a diverse and rich gathering. One has a strong sense that the movement of our schools is gathering momentum and renewed
identity for the 21st century.
Like the Charter for Catholic schools that share in our tradition, this congress was both affirming and challenging. Terrace has a rightfully proud
position in the story of the Christian Brothers in this country. The lived reality of our community is immediately recognisable in the stories of our
brother and sister schools and communities. The Terrace Gentlemen of 137 years have played and play important and meaningful roles in society
locally, nationally and internationally. But in the 250th year after Blessed Edmund's birth and in the 100th year after Brother Treacy's death, the
signs of our times calls us to be even greater risk takers and to see new ways of doing and being that bring us closer to the edge of God's vision
for our world. At the congress, the feeling of solidarity with our fellow schools was palpable. I would love to bottle it. We are more than an end
within ourselves. We are a part of a vibrant network of schools. We are a part of an exciting and unchartered time in the history of the Jesus story,
the Church in the world and Australia and Blessed Edmund's mission for education. I was affirmed by the congress in that our formation framework
that Mr David Carroll shared in last week's newsletter is very much in alignment with the spirit and intent of the EREA congress which called
us to be clear and committed to our past, passionate about our present and preparing for our future.
Director of Sport Mr D Wright
Thank-you to all the Open boys who will complete their final round of College representation this weekend against TSS in the activities of Rugby
and Basketball.
For these graduating Senior/Open players there have been a series of milestones throughout the year. On Saturday a significant part of many
boys' lives will come to an end. All the boys should celebrate their achievements over many years of representing the Red and Black. It is a significant
element of the Terrace culture that all boys are celebrated, regardless of their team placement or individual skill ability. A boy playing in the E
team is just as important as the biggest, strongest boy in the A team.
At Assembly on Tuesday I reminded the boys that this final round should be addressed just as importantly as any other round and that all boys
should remain strongly committed to finishing the season well. Representation of the College – right to the end of the season – is and should always
be considered a privilege and an honour. Behaviour unacceptable in any other round will not be suddenly acceptable in the last round. So
for the boys it is simple – represent with honour and distinction, by being fully committed right to the end, compete fiercely and enjoy yourselves to
the final whistle.
CIC - Congratulations to the young men in CIC Track and Field who competed fiercely at the Championships on Monday and Wednesday. At the
time of print, Mr Chris Humphrys has been relaying back the great efforts by all the boys on the track. Regardless of the final result, all the boys
who have run this week should be congratulated and rewarded for their efforts.
This Saturday is the final round of CIC Tennis and Basketball with fixtures against MBBC. Well done to all boys who were acknowledged by the
school community on Tuesday.
Basketball Mr A Baruksopulo
Last Saturday was the penultimate GPS Basketball round for 2012 against Brisbane Grammar School. Terrace and BGS have had a tradition of
fierce competition when it comes to Basketball especially in the last couple of years. Last weekend was no different with the round being split, six
games apiece. Terrace performed very well in the 8B, 8C, 8D, 9A, 11A and 2nd V games, recording convincing wins.
This weekend is the final round against The Southport School. It will be great to finish the season off strongly with all teams getting a game.
First V - Terrace hosted BGS on Saturday in the final home fixture for the season. In what was one of the biggest games of the season, it was
very disappointing to see the lack of support from the student body.
The game was played with great intensity as both teams realised the importance of getting the win. Terrace started strongly and should have taken
a large lead into the first break but failure to secure defensive rebounds allowed BGS to keep pace. The teams continued to trade baskets through
the second period and the scores were tied leading into the second half.
Grammar took advantage of some missed opportunities by Terrace in the third quarter and skipped out to the largest lead of the game. This was
done by hitting tough shots against good defence. At the other end, Terrace could not replicate and we were left with the challenge of coming from
behind in the final quarter.
As time wound down, Terrace settled for perimeter options and were unable to convert. Although the effort was there, we lacked in execution. BGS
ran out winners in the end meaning Terrace now faces the daunting task of beating TSS down the coast this Saturday to secure our first win of the
season.
Future Problem Solving
A big apology to our 27 students who were invited to Melbourne for the FPS finals. The article last week said six students.
This should have read six teams.
Our students are very excited to have this opportunity and are planning by collecting research and data on trade barriers.
Names of the participants and extra details about the program can be found on the College website in a story on
home page.
If your son is attending please check the details on your email. We need to move quickly on a number of arrangements.
Scenario Performance
We have three students who achieved amazing results this year. Adam McNamara placed 2 nd in the Junior Division,
Tom Loudon placed,3 rd in the Middle Division and Ned Tiernan placed 4 th . This is a wonderful recognition of their hard
work and Miss Emily Pollard their coach.
All Maths Honours, Drama Honours, English Master Classes and FPS will continue as usual Week 1 next term. We
wish these students all the best over this exam time and know they will work hard to achieve their best.
Rugby Mr T Mandrusiak
We have once again managed to secure games for all our teams as we head into Round 9. I ask that all players show their support and respect to
their team and coach by turning up ready to play on Saturday. I understand it's a busy time with exams upon us however it's important we end the
season on a strong note.
On the eve of our final game against TSS at Southport I would encourage all players to continue their outstanding commitment to sportsmanship.
Please ensure we finish on a good note.
Club Rugby - Congratulations to all our boys who played club Rugby this year and in particular the boys who were fortunate to play in grand finals
over the weekend. As the saying goes "there's no time like game time" and club Rugby provides a great environment for boys to play more Rugby
over a longer period.
Terrace Rugby balls - No student at anytime is to take home a Terrace Rugby ball. These balls are needed at each training session. If you have a
Terrace Rugby ball at home please return it to the Sports Office.
Lost and found - All lost and found gear is returned to Student Services after training and games. I also have in my possession a large number of
head gear without names. Please see me in the Sports Office if you are missing head gear.
Please check the College’s website for all your Rugby information.
Track and Field Mr C Humphrys
Without a doubt, this has been the most enjoyable CIC Championship I have seen in the eight years of this role. The boys from Years 5 – 7 performed
to the best of their ability across two gruelling days of competition. On Day 1 we witnessed the boys record a staggering 30 personal best
results from a total of 42 events. Harry Wilson and Sam Josephson became CIC Champions for the first time, while Jack Seymour took an
amazing 13 seconds of his 800m time. Will McDonald followed their lead with his 17cm personal best in long jump.
With Terrace in 4th place overall heading into Day 2, Nick Erzetic stamped his authority in the 1500m event with a personal best and a silver medal.
Our hurdlers then went onto medal in 12 of the 14 races. The vibe was good! Race after race, we made inroads into the competition. We
were in second place and 90 points behind St Laurence's College going into the last seven events… the 4x100m relays. Our boys were outstanding
placing in every relay and narrowly missing out just 20 points behind.
Our Under 10 team were announced CIC Champions with Thomas Burns a standout athlete winning three events and finishing second in his other.
Charlie Condon and Jacob Ruff (Captain) broke long-standing College records in their hurdle events.
Terrace finished second overall and second in the percentage trophy. A huge thank-you to Mr Brendan Ganley, Mr Chris Yeo, Mrs Marta
Hamori, Miss Donna Rapisarda and Ms Maddie Smith for coaching this season.
CIC Champions - Aymeric Morgan, Thomas Burns, Patrick Cockerill, Charlie Condon, William Alleytne, Patrick Monckton, Cam Howard,
William Splatt, Nicholas Cross, Sam Josephson, Harry Wilson, Will McDonald, Finn Tapp, Jayden Klemenc, Luke Allen.
GPS - This Friday, we will provide transport out to QSAC for a relay meet held by Nudgee College. A program is available on the website.
Over the holidays we will be providing training for all athletes at UQ on Tuesday and Thursday of both weeks. We will start at 8am and finish
around 9am, so that the boys can enjoy their holidays.
Congratulations to the following boys who have made the Met North team for the State Championships next month: Deng Arop, Oliver Barry,
Stephen Brown, Courtney Chambers, Hamish Day, Riley Kelly, Jack Lodder, Liam McCracken, James Mullins, Darcy O'Connor, George
Partridge, Jorqe Samios, Oliver Trad and Jacob Ruff.
