A community for all
Inclusivity is vital to any community or family. So is it to Terrace. American Human Rights activist and
political speaker Stuart Milk summed the term perfectly in just one brief sentence:
"We are less when we don't include everyone."
As a community we are endeavouring to ensure our events are inclusive. The Global Financial Crisis
and ever-growing demands on time, not just money, are facts of modern life that have forced many of us
to re-assess. And by re-assess I mean in some cases rationalise what events and how many events in
which we are involved.
As a College we greatly value the parent and community support we receive for our young men and
what we are trying to achieve at the College. We have 18 Supporters' Groups, excluding the College
Board and Foundation, which do marvellous, selfless work: Terrace Parents and Friends Association,
Terrace Ladies' Group, Gregory Terrace Old Boys' Association, Basketball Committee, Terrace Cardinals,
Cricket Supporters' Committee, Debating Supporters' Committee, Football Supporters' Committee,
Gymnastics Supporters' Committee, Terrace Performing Arts, Rugby Supporters' Committee, Swimming
Supporters' Committee, Tennis Supporters' Committee, Terrace Timor Network, Terrex (Exceptional
Leaners) Supporters' Committee, Terrow (Rowing Supporters' Committee), Terrun (Track and Field and
Cross Country Supporters' Committee) and Volleyball Supporters' Committee.
On top of the work by these groups, there are the things you do as parents, such as Parent/Teacher/
Student/Interviews, attend sporting and cultural events etc. And of course there is a life outside of
school. What I am asking, and what some members of the College Leadership Team will be speaking to
the Chairs of Supporters' meeting next week, is that people be mindful that the landscape has changed
as a result of the GFC. No-one wants, for a moment, to prevent people from being involved in the social
and supportive aspects of our community. We ask only that people give some thought to how often, how
much and for whom, these events are being planned. Perhaps we can do some things better. At the
very least this is worth discussion and an opportunity to establish direction for the future. The bottom
line is what we are all doing is for the benefit of our young men and of an
inclusive community.
A community for all (cont’d)
Two new members joined the College Board at the recent Board retreat – Dr Catherine See and Mr Tim Connolly. Catherine's business and
strategic consultancy background - she also is chair of the Terrace Timor Network - and Tim's town planning and organisational skills will be very
valuable additions to the Board.
Former much-loved and respected Director of Culture Ms Vicki Sargent was in our thoughts last Tuesday as our College was inundated with
young musicians who later that night performed at Brisbane Boys' College.
The Junior Music Day of Excellence and Vicki Sargent Concert provided an opportunity not only to remember Vicki but also for talented young
students from 10 other schools across Brisbane to regale our Spring Hill campus with their music and voices as they prepared for the concert.
Over the last few weeks I have been privileged to spend time with 35 young men to whom I am an academic mentor. In sharing their stories, one
young man revealed the method behind an astounding 5-point improvement in his projected OP score.
He has put it down to five things:
Friday Roll Call (students will know what that means)
Planning and organisation
Finishing assignments before time
Committing to logging study hours
Joining study groups after school.
What is most obvious to me from working with the boys has been their passion and desire to do better. Next week I will be spending time with a
number of Year 12 students at Maroon during the last of the Kairos Retreats. It has been said many times, and I know it to be true, that this retreat
is greatly valued by the Seniors, as one of the final opportunities before they leave Terrace to spend time as a group in a somewhat more relaxed
atmosphere with their friends and classmates. The work done by Campus Minster Mr Paul Antenucci and Peer Ministers David Tubbs, James
Herd and Sam Reiser is quite remarkable.
The organisation that goes into weekend sport and culture activities, from early in the morning ‘till late in the day, is exceptional – in particular the
work done by Director of Sport Mr Damian Wright and Director of Culture Mr Neil Wharton and our individual sports directors/coaches.
Then there is the volunteer work provided by our parents and Old Boys, at the barbeque, canteen, putting up banners and flags, scoring, refereeing
and more. Organised sport and activities don't just happen…unless there is someone to do the organising. This weekend there will be Basketball
and Rugby away at Toowoomba Grammar, CIC Tennis at Nudgee, CIC Track and Field and tomorrow (Friday) night there will be CIC Basketball
and GPS Chess. Debating also is into the finals with five of our teams winning through to the next stage of the QDU competition last night.
Congratulations to our Gymnastics Captains – Captain Tom Labone and Vice Captain Robert Hickson, who were presented at Spirit Assembly
on Tuesday.
Year 12 students are approaching a particularly busy and exciting period, including the Senior Formal, which is less than two weeks away. QCS
Testing – which I often refer to as "the biggest team event of the year'' is early next month. Students need to keep their eyes firmly on their goal -
enjoy the "down time'' but keep their priorities straight.
With best wishes
STUDY TIP
10 Top Study Tips for Improving Concentration
1. Study in a quiet place – no distractions!
2. Make a schedule – for the week and then for the day.
3. Study at a time that suits you best – early morning or in the evening.
4. Make sure you are not tired or hungry when you study – you need
energy! Drink water, no soft drink!
5. Don’t try to do two tasks at the same time. Concentration means focusing
on one thing to the exclusion of all else.
6. Break large tasks into a series of smaller tasks that you complete one
at a time.
7. Relax. It is hard to concentrate when you are tense.
8. Clear your mind. Don’t daydream. Monitor your thoughts.
9. Imagine you will share what you are studying with a friend. What
would you tell them about the topic?
10.Take breaks when you feel tired. Have a short break then go back
to work.
Studying without real concentration is like trying to fill a bucket with water
when the bucket has a hole in it! It just doesn’t work! (How–To-Study.com)
College Dean Mr C Mayes
Year 12 QCS preparation - The QCS workshops that were set down for this Friday have been postponed due to the rescheduling of the College
Track and Field carnival. This session was meant to be an SRI workshop. The students will undertake the workshop at a later date.
Support for GT sport – It was wonderful to see so many young men and families supporting our Rugby teams at Tennyson on the weekend.
Unfortunately the support for the Basketball wasn't as strong. It would be great for our First V team if more players could remain behind after their
games to support them. This weekend we travel to Toowoomba. Whilst it is a long trip, I would ask all supporters to remain for the First Basketball
and Rugby if possible. It means a lot to the Senior students.
Junior Day of Excellence – This year it was our turn to host musicians from all of the lower middle years of other GPS schools. The students
practised during the day on Tuesday at Terrace under the supervision of the many talented Music teachers from each of the schools. The boys
then performed for parents and other interested audience at BBC on Tuesday evening. This concert is named after Ms Vicki Sargent, the former
College Director of Culture. Vicki was passionate about the arts within boys' schools. The boys were fantastic and would have made her very
proud. Congratulations to all of the students from Terrace and the dedicated Music and choral teachers. As always, your work is very much appreciated.
Olympics – No doubt many of you have been watching all of the happenings in London since last Saturday morning. Personally, I enjoy watching
most sports. As I get older, I am appreciating the efforts of each of the competitors more. I particularly enjoy watching the reactions of the athletes
who do well enough to win a medal or achieve an unexpected PB. Alternatively, I get quite disappointed when I see athletes who win silver or
bronze and are upset about this. I appreciate that there is a school of thought that says that all athletes should be ruthless and expect to win,
however there can only be one winner. My point is that by devaluing minor placings, athletes devalue their opponents who were better on the
day. We often speak to our boys about trying to the best of their abilities but also appreciating the abilities and efforts of their opponents – this is
what true sportsmanship is about.
Dean of Studies Mrs J Quinn
Many thanks to the families who attended our Year 8 Exhibition afternoon. Our boys were enthusiastically awaiting the arrival of families and were
looking forward to being proud hosts on the day. Our aim was to offer a snap-shot of a day in the life of a Year 8 student. We are indeed blessed
by the presence of our Gentlemen of Terrace.
Next Monday evening (6 August) is our Year 10 Subject Selection evening. The evening commences at 7pm in the Campbell Centre with a general
session on Senior schooling. This session will be followed by presentations outlining information on each of the Senior subjects offered. These
presentations will be repeated four times over the duration of the evening. The evening will conclude at approximately 9pm when tea and coffee
will be offered in the Campbell Centre.
Following this evening, students will have an interview with one of the Heads of Faculty where final discussions and decisions are made. This
program, combined with the lessons in formation where SET plans are formulated, should allow informed decisions to be made.
This week our Year 12 students reviewed our last writing task practice and a follow-up workshop on our last Short Response Item paper. Our boys
are to be commended on their efforts to date. We continue to prepare for the designated QCS days on September 4-5, with a full practice on August
13-14.
As we are now at the conclusion of Week 4, all students need to be back into the routine of ensuring time is given to homework and assignments.
Planning around assignments, allowing for drafting and feedback, are essential for good outcomes. I encourage all students to ensure they are
logging their study hours in their diary, completing the term planner and ensuring they do their 'Friday roll call'.
Dean of Students Mr D Carroll
A day in the park
Rugby season is with us, the weather is beautiful and there is excitement in the air. Our teams are playing good Rugby and it is very obvious that
we are more competitive across the board. Congratulations to all the coaches who have worked hard to ensure this improvement.
I enjoyed last Saturday and felt that most games I watched were played in great spirit. We have been working with the boys on developing a positive
attitude towards the game. In particular I have been explaining that Rugby is a contact sport . This means that the opposition is going to tackle
you when you get the ball. Just because you get passed the ball does not mean that the opposition has to get out of your way so you can run and
score a try. You need to expect to get tackled and abide by the referee's decision. If your son can't do that and react in a way which clearly displays
this then he simply won't play. It doesn't matter what team the boy plays in, it matters how they play the game.
We will continue to work with the boys and I hope you will support us at home as well. Rugby is a great game and good for young men to play to
assist with their discipline. I encourage them to play but in a way that exhibits that discipline. I think you could help on the sidelines as well. If you
are a yeller , what are you yelling? If it is a critical comment aimed at the opposition or the referee then please don't. Why not set an example for
the boys and encourage them to remain focused, abide by the referee's decision and get on with trying to win the game. Remember they keep
score and winning the game is the goal of the contest. I am happy to hear from you if you feel there are incidents that you think are inappropriate.
Your eyes and ear are important for us to create a picture of how the day progresses.
Inter-House Track and Field - This is at Tennyson tomorrow. It is a great day and boys need to wear their House shirt, black shorts and closed
sports shoes. They will need a hat and a water bottle as well. Food is available to buy but I would pack them something as well.
Waterford Mr D Fall
Last week, we had the great pleasure of a visit from Terrace Old Boy and Rhodes Scholar Mr Robert Dann. Robert's extensive CV includes work
as speechwriter to UN Secretary-General Mr Kofi Annan, and mediation work in Israel/Palestine and Syria. He addressed the Year 10 cohort and
spoke a little about his work but also of some of his philosophies about life, success and being a man. It was fascinating to hear Robert's story,
which was an example of the success that can come from a Terrace education; both professionally and in the formation of principled gentlemen
who are willing to make a difference in the world. We were exceptionally fortunate to have this opportunity.
Recently, all students completed a well-being survey. This is an important instrument which assists us with tracking and monitoring Year 10 students.
Data from the survey has been confidentially collated and some students will be invited to speak with one of our counsellors if there is an
indication that this may be of benefit.
This week has been another busy one, with Treacy camp, Maths competition and Track and Field carnival among the activities. After this week,
there are three weeks until exams begin. Rugby training takes away some evening study time, so boys need to be organised and use their time
efficiently. There are fewer assignments this term, meaning the main focus will be around exam preparation. There are some examples of study
timetables on the student S: drive which may be of some help in planning for the next few weeks.
On Monday evening, all students and their parents are strongly encouraged to attend the Subject Selection Evening in the Campbell Centre at
7pm. To begin, there will be important information for all, followed by the opportunity to attend specific subject presentations. Students are welcome
to wear free clothes and must sit with their parents during the presentation. Please note that, due to a mix-up with our booking, Year 10
Immunisations will now take place on Monday 20 August.
Middle Schooling Mrs T Kotzas & Mr M Stewart
Week 4 had it all…culturally that is. On Tuesday, 22 boys represented Terrace at the Junior GPS Music Festival. The performance at the Vicki
Sargent Concert was exceptional. On Wednesday, our Year 7s were treated to an Olympic themed performance by the Queensland Symphony
Orchestra at QPAC. Back at the village, Years 6 and 8 and Year 9 Drama students enjoyed a stellar performance of Shakespeare's Romeo and
Juliet by the Grin and Tonic Theatre Company. On Thursday afternoon, students from the Middle School performed in the Vocal Showcase with
great success.
Next Monday, Year 7 students will be participating in the annual Trivia completion with the girls from All Hallows’. We know our boys are very
much looking forward to this and we wish them all the very best.
Year 9 camps commence on Monday. Windsor House will brave the elements at Maroon and we know the boys are very excited.
Our condolences to Mr Darren Brown and his family who are mourning the loss of his father this week. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.
Business and Technology Mrs L Serafin-Huey
This term's article will focus on the happenings in Technology as well as the Ecoman program and the success of our QUT High School Accounting
students.
The students in Primary ICT will be eligible for a Terracademy Award. The inaugural Awards are coming to Terrace this term. A showcase of our
talented Years 5 -7 students and their movie making skills will be on display. The red carpet will be rolled out for all the nominated films that have
been produced in Semester 1 in ICT including If I Could Change The World With Just One Product and for all our bookworms Promoting The
Books That I Love.
This term, Year 5 students will be working on an exciting project titled: Imagine if you could talk to the Antarctic Animals! What would they tell you
about their lives in such a cold environment? What happens in their daily lives? What food do they eat? How do they raise their offspring? Do they
live there all year around or are they migratory? What are their greatest challenges and fears living in the Antarctic? What is really interesting or
unusual about them?
Year 5 students are scripting and creating an educational iMovie to share with family and friends all about the lives of three different Antarctic animals
using images and movie clips with a recorded voice track.
11 IPT students are completing their assignment which involves them designing and developing a computer game while the Year 12 IPT students
are designing and developing a database system. The Year 9 ICTE students are learning about website design and Year 10 ICTE students are
programming robots. What an exciting time they are having. Year 8 students have been working on the skills and design features of game-making
using a program called Gamemake. This challenging program allows students to design, create and publish their own complex games and test
their developing skills in gameplay.
The Ecoman program ran this year from the 25-27 June. The program provided the students with an excellent opportunity to participate in a simulation
as a co-director of an operating company which had been running for four years. The students then ran the company successfully for a further
four years, which was simulated over a three-day period, after which they presented relevant information on share price, profit and strategic
direction to the shareholders. The boys are to be commended not only on the way that they conducted themselves during the three-day program
but also on their presentation at the AGM. They answered questions from the shareholders (their parents, grandparents and facilitators) and were
able to hold their ground on some very difficult questions.
This year the participants were Cameron Randell, Charles Troian, Giles Morgan, Ben O'Brien, Chris Daley, Ryan Galluzzo, Alex Bashford,
Michael and Harrison Pie, Isaac Betteridge, Ben Rogencamp, Fraser Holt, Liam Morton, Oscar Price and Michael Carrello.
Also during Term 2, four of our Year 12 Accounting students completed their first university unit – BSB101 Accounting. Joshua Attlee, Jordan
McDonald, Christopher Walker and Ben Knoblanche are to be commended in their dedication to their studies as they completed this subject on
top of their senior program at Terrace. They all passed the university subject with flying colours. This means that they will be credited with this
result. Their university studies are well on their way.
Director of Culture Mr N Wharton
The calendar at Terrace is always full and this week is no different. Our annual Junior Music Day of Excellence was held on Tuesday at Brisbane
Boys' College. This concert honours our past Director of Culture, Miss Vicki Sargent. With more than 250 boys from 10 schools participating it
certainly made for a busy but rewarding day. Thank-you to all our Terrace Gentlemen for their exemplary behaviour both at Terrace and BBC. I
also would like to acknowledge our Music staff who facilitated this day. It was once again a very successful display of the musical ability of our
students.
Last night was Round 2 of the QDU finals and more can be read in Mrs Lorraine O'Sullivan's report on the next page. This afternoon our Vocal
Showcase will be held at Waterford. This shows yet further depth of talent at our College.
Friday night will see our Chess team travel to Toowoomba Grammar for Round 3. It will be a very busy day for them after spending a day at Tennyson
for Inter-House Track and Field.
Good luck to our Senior Theatresport team who will be competing in the final for the Queensland Theatresport competition. The final is on Tuesday
7 August at the Powerhouse. Tickets are available for purchase from the Powerhouse booking office.
If your son was involved in the following activities please mark Friday 10 August in your calendars. This will be the last day we will be taking photographs
for the annual. Photographs will be taken after school from 3.15pm for: GPS Swimming, Tennis and Cross Country; CIC Tennis, Cross
Country and Basketball; the Senior musical cast, crew and band and Age Swimming Champions.
Music Mr B Bobart
Last Tuesday was the Junior Music Day of Excellence hosted by Brisbane Boys' College. During the day, boys from 10 Colleges came together to
perform in one of the three ensembles, a string ensemble, concert band or choir. The day's finale is a concert where each group performs for 20
minutes to showcase the work they have done through the day. I would like to acknowledge and congratulate the following boys from Years 5 to 7
who participated in the day and performed to a very high standard at the concert:
Scott Moran, Alexander O'Meally, Henry Wenck, William Cook, William Morrison, Joseph Pincus, James Hurst, Gianni Pecoraro, Harry
Rackemann, Nicholas Erzetic, Daniel Lincon, Jack Gray, Charlie Round, Nicholas Williams, Zachary Boland, William Curling, Jeremy
Davis, Carl Franzmann, Charlie Marshall, and Isaiah Snell.
Next Wednesday evening (8 August) is the first Middle School Concert for 2013. All boys from Years 5 to 7 will perform in their Music class ensembles.
Also performing on the night will be the Callan Strings and Callan Soloists, Concert Band and the Terrace Big Band. The concert begins at
6.30pm, not 7pm as stated on the College Calendar. All performers need to be seated in the floor area of the Campbell Centre by 6pm. The audience
will be seated in the gallery area to help make the night run smoothly. The concert will be finished by 8pm. Dress for the concert will be Formal
College uniform and blazers.
Chess Ms T Morgan-Pertus
Term 3 is going to be very busy for Chess. Since the beginning of this term we have had the Inter-House Chess Competition. Mahoney House
Reidy (6), Buckley (2) and Kearney (0).
The following week we had the Primary Chess Championships and Jack Gray is the Junior Chess Champion. The College Chess Champion is
Nick O'Hara. Well done to both.
Last Friday we started our first game against IGS at the College. We had a lot of players and we could field seven teams. The students played
very well and won many games.
The following students should be congratulated for their performance in the competition: Premier Team: Patrick Rice, Fraser Young, Nameer
Van Oosterom; and Nick O’Hara (drew), Senior Team: Yanni Michellis, Dan vu; and Fergus MacTaggart (drew) Open A: Alistair Falconer
Dean of Identity Mr C Ryan
Like a lot of my fellow bleary-eyed Australians, I love the Olympics. I do worry about what it all costs and how important it actually is but I do enjoy
the drama of human endeavour and am distraught when the dream is broken by drug scandals and the like. I feel as though I have been competing
in my own emotional mini-Olympics with a bit going on in my family. This week, my 81-year-old aunt, who is my God Mother has been preparing
to die. There has been much to do, as those who have run this race know all too well. I found this in her bedside table on the day the Olympics
started and it has been on my mind as I have prepared her Funeral Mass booklet over the weekend. I thought I would share it with you.
The Smaller Beatitudes
Blessed are those who can laugh at themselves: They will have no end of fun.
Blessed are those who can tell a mountain from a molehill: They will save a lot of bother.
Blessed are those who know how to relax without looking for excuses: They are on the way to becoming wise.
Blessed are those who know when to be quiet and listen: They will learn a lot of new things.
Blessed are those who are sane enough not to take themselves seriously: They will be valued by those about them.
Happy are you if you can take small things seriously and face serious things calmly: You will go far in life.
Happy are you if you can appreciate a smile and forget a frown: You will walk on the sunny side of the street.
Happy are you if you can be kind in understanding the attitudes of others even when the signs are unfavourable: You may be taken for a fool but
this is the price of charity.
Blessed are those who think before acting and pray before thinking: They will avoid many blunders.
Happy are you if you know how to hold your tongue and smile, even when people interrupt and contradict you or tread on your toes: The Gospel
has begun to sleep in your heart.
Above all, Blessed are you who recognise the Lord in all whom you meet: the light of truth shines in your life for you who have found true wisdom.
Toward the end of Term 2 and the beginning of Term 3, Year 10s have participated in a camping expedition and Micah Retreat that follows at the
Gregory Terrace Outdoor Education Centre. This week marks the end of those activities.
The Year 10 students have participated in a variety of activities on camp that further develop a range of skills. Teamwork, leadership and self
confidence are crucial skills in developing young men that are tactfully taught by Mr Matt Fairley and the GTOEC staff.
Broken into House groups, Year 8, 9 and 10 camps are followed by retreats. The House Dean, other members of the Campus Ministry team and
I, meet the boys on Thursday afternoon at the GTOEC to conclude the week with the Micah retreat. The Prophet Micah is best known for challenging
others to “act justly, love tenderly and to walk humbly with God.”
Micah’s virtues sound great but have little meaning for Year 10s if not put into proper context and made applicable to their lives. Through a variety
of activities, we try to illustrate the connection to Micah’s virtues through awareness of self, awareness of others and awareness of God in our
everyday life. We challenge the boys to apply this awareness in practical ways when interacting with others.
A call to be uncommon men - We recognise that making an effort to have this type of awareness is uncommon among teenage young men. Our
challenge to the students in leaving the retreat is: “Dare to Be Uncommon.” At the conclusion of the retreat, the boys are given a rubber wrist band
with that slogan on it to serve as a daily reminder of the virtues we have spoken about.
Captains Corner Chris John – College Captain
For the last couple of days, my feet have been perched on the couch, my eyes focused on the TV. I have been watching the Australian Olympic
team compete at the 2012 London Olympics. Christian Sprenger, an Old Boy of Terrace, stood out as he won a silver medal in the 100m breaststroke.
Through hard work and gruelling training, Christian was in peak physical condition to touch the wall in a near perfect race. He looked up at
the result and thought there was a mistake as he had crunched his PB (personal best) by a second. Imagine that feeling of ecstasy.
Imagine that feeling of opening up your report card and believing that there has been a mistake, as you have exceeded your own expectations
and crunched any goals you had originally set. Whatever that PB is for you, knowing you had tried your very best, endured every hard training
session and late night to achieve your best possible result would be exhilarating.
This week, let us draw inspiration from our nation’s athletes in London. Let us commit ourselves to every homework session, to every assignment,
to every training session in all aspects of our school life so that at the end of our journey, our competition, and our race we can experience that
ecstasy of excellence.
Director of Sport Mr D Wright
Twelve months can be viewed by some as a long time and by others as a glimpse of elapsed opportunities that can pass by incredibly quickly.
Twelve months ago, following the round to IGS, I was struggling to comprehend the final score lines that had eventuated over that weekend schedule.
Twelve months on, I can reflect on last weekend's performance and be exceptionally pleased with the improvement in both the Rugby and
Basketball programs.
For the Basketball program there is a new challenge – now being pitched up against the Rugby program. However there probably is more enthusiasm,
structure, planning, organization and skill development present now, than has been evident in previous seasons.
I think the same can be said for the Rugby programme. I am not a Rugby technical expert, but I listen to those that are (and those that think they
are) and there most certainly is an improvement in all facets of the game – and the results I think are clearly showing this.
For both programs the true reflection will not be fully appreciable for another two to three seasons as the skills, strength and game sense development
can build upon seasonal improvements. Allied to these improvements is a major shift in work ethic and commitment to sport – training and
game play execution – a change in culture.
Emanating from the Sports Review of 2011, there was a driving ambition to improve Terrace Sport – and results. The review was not about winning
Premierships but rather improving competitiveness – giving our boys a greater chance to be competitive – to win.
Reflecting 12 months on at the competitive performances by all Terrace teams and especially the First Basketball and Rugby teams, I can see that
the initiatives taken are starting to bear fruit.
First steps – some improvement – but at least we are on our way and building a great base from which to continue to work. The future proofing of
both programmes is the key ingredient to sporting success by creating a spine of talent throughout the year levels. Success both on and off the
field for years to come.
Basketball Mr A Baruksopulo
Last Friday and Saturday were the official start to the Gregory Terrace CIC and GPS seasons. In the CIC program, Terrace competed against
Brisbane Grammar School and in the GPS program, Terrace played against Ipswich Grammar School. Both these fixtures were highly successful
as we were competitive throughout all the age groups, students competed to the best of their ability and there were pleasing results across the
board.
Looking forward to the next round, in CIC Terrace takes on Nudgee Junior at home in the Year 5s and 7s while the Year 6s are at Nudgee Junior.
In GPS, Terrace travels up the hill to Toowoomba Grammar School. Results in the past have been very positive with only a few teams recording
losses. Hopefully this is no different.
Two important reminders;
Students must be present at their game no later than 30 mins before tip off.
Training is not optional. If your son is unable to make training he is required to let his coach know or contact the Sports Office.
First V - Terrace came in to the event having shown great improvement over the last couple of weeks but knowing that Ipswich Grammar boasted
several state representatives.
Terrace got off to a great start that took Ipswich by surprise. It seemed the representative players from Ipswich underestimated the amount of hard
work and improvement the Terrace players have undergone this year. Taking advantage, Terrace skipped out to a 7-point lead only to undo the
good work with defensive lapses and silly fouls. With some of our more experienced players having to be rested due to foul trouble, Ipswich took
control of the game and took a lead into half time.
Terrace was unlucky as the bounce of the ball and the calls started to go against us. Facing adversity through individual foul trouble, our boys
rallied to show Ipswich they would not lie down. Terrace trailed at three-quarter time by only 5. As the fourth quarter went on, the constant full-court
pressure and experience from Ipswich saw them score a 81-53 win. The final score was not a reflection of the contest with Terrace showing visiting
teams are in for a tough battle at the "Terra-dome". Stand out performers for Terrace were Jordan McDonald (10 points, 14 rebounds), Max
Porter (10 points, 5 rebounds) and Sami Logoro (9 points, 5 assists, 6 steals).
Challenge Program
Week 5 is a busy week for many participants in the Challenge Program, the reminders are listed below.
Monday is Year 7 Terrace Writers in period 3 and 4.
Tuesday is All Hallows' Cluster during p.2, 3 and 4. Please make sure your son has read his letter and knows where to be at what
time.
Wednesday is the deadline for applications for Drama Honours, please hand these to me or Mr Beh.
Thursday is the Year 11 Philosophy and Ethics Conference
Friday is a reminder to Year 5 and 6 Terrace Writers to finish their first draft for feedback.
Finally, good luck to the Future Problem Solving Teams with their Lock ups last week. All classes are back to normal sessions this
week.
Rugby Mr T Mandrusiak
Thanks to everyone who made last Saturday’s home games at Tennyson a success and a special thanks to our Tennyson groundsman Alan Kennedy
for his efforts in making Tennyson look picture perfect. Each week a significant amount of work goes into ensuring the fields are of a high
standard for both training and playing.
As we head into Round 3 of the GPS competition it's important to remember what is expected of our players, parents and spectators.
Players:
Play by the rules.
Cooperate with and respect game officials and their decisions.
Abstain from verbal abuse, distraction, or provoking of officials or other players.
Treat all players as you would like to be treated and respect the property of others.
Parents and spectators:
Provide a model of good behaviour for all players.
Demonstrate courtesy towards all players, all officials and all spectators.
Encourage honest effort, skilled performance and team loyalty.
Let game officials conduct the match without interference yet be willing to provide assistance if requested.
An important reminder that training is not optional. If your son is unable to make training he is required to let his coach know or contact the Sports
Office. This weekend we play Toowoomba Grammar School at Toowoomba. Please check the Sports Home Page on the website for kick off times.
Track and Field Mr C Humphrys
CIC - Last weekend the boys from Years 5-7 competed at the first invitational carnival of the season. It was great to see boys put their hands up to
run in as many events as there were on offer. Sam Josephson in Year seven surprised himself when he recorded one of the fastest times of the
morning in 100m and 200m events. Ben Hearne and Charlie Condon were very impressive despite it being their first ever CIC athletics carnival.
We look forward to their continued improvements.
All athletes are again invited this weekend to St Lucia to further develop their speed and athletic ability. With the College Age Championships on
the following weekend, boys are encouraged to concentrate on their three best events. Full details of both programs will be issued to the boys and
available on the website.
On behalf of the entire team, good luck to our young boys who are competing at the Annual City Districts Carnival on the 6-7 August.
GPS - The GPS athletes are invited to get in some preseason training on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at Victoria Park. Middle distance and
sprint athletes are working hard from 7am down near the cricket nets. Also, we have one of our best ever athletes, Adam Bevis, training our hurdlers.
So it is time to get on board in preparation for the 2012 season! Don't forget to nominate for the Met North Championships by emailing emmahamiltonsmith@terrace.qld.edu.au.
Tennis Mr G Brimblecombe
Last Saturday we kicked off our CIC Tennis season. In what was a magical day we faced our strongest opponent for the season. With four boys in
the Met North team BGS certainly were the favourite in our Round 1 clash.
Our boys fought admirably losing 7 matches to 1 but contested a number of close results. Congratulations must go out to our team of the week,
Team 5 , which won its clash 38 -25. The well groomed unit of Charlie Marshall, Hudson Mulcahy, Isaiah Snell and Sam Hearne dropped just
one set for the morning.
Other results were: Team 1, 10-40; Team 2 , 22-30; Team 3, 18 – 39; Team 4, 12 – 40; Team 6, 25 – 31; Team 7, 26 – 30; Team 8 26 – 30.
Some of our better individual performances came from Harry Rackemann and Harry Howard with winning ratios of 14 – 4 and 14-5 respectively.
In tournament news Oliver Anderson is currently representing Australia on a national tour of Europe. In his first three tournaments Oliver has gone
semi-final, semi-final and quarter-final. This is a mighty effort against the best 14-year-olds in the world.
Harry Rackemann also continued his good form reaching the quarter-final of the Junior Masters Series event on the weekend. He will complete
that tournament next weekend. Well done to both our boys and good luck for the remainder of the events.
