After two full days of QCS practice and various workshops - the real thing
is just a matter of weeks away - September 4-5.
He conquers who endures
Yesterday was the Exhibition 'Peoples Day' public holiday and what a beautiful August day it was. The
15 th of August also is the Feast of the Assumption. For Catholics it is a time to consider our Catholic
tradition of reverence for the mother of Jesus. Mary is sometimes described as the "first Christian" -
someone who was able to put aside her traditional upbringing as a devout Jewish woman to literally
embrace Christ as her son. The confusion she must have felt and the faith she needed are still challenges
for mothers (and fathers) of adolescents. Mary was certainly a woman of perseverance – a
good attribute for anyone.
Perseverance is a quality that has always been of interest to researchers. One of the classic studies
was by Benjamin Bloom at the University of Chicago. He and his colleagues undertook a five-year
study of top performers in six fields; concert pianists, Olympic swimmers, sculptors, tennis players,
mathematicians and research neurologists. They concluded that drive and determination, not great
natural ability, led to unparalleled success. Moreover, the mothers of top performers reported that often
their other children had greater innate giftedness. We know that Dr Jonas Salk, who developed the
polio vaccine, spent 98% of his time identifying things that did not work before finding the things that
did. Edison had more than a thousand documented failures before inventing the carbon filament of the
old light bulb. It was he who said: "There are many thousands of individuals on this planet more intelligent
than myself, I, however work at it eighteen hours a day."
Other memorable Edison quotes include:
"I am not discouraged because every wrong attempt discarded is another step forward"
"Many of life's failures are by men who did not realise how close they were to
success when they gave up" Continued next page
Rugby clash against Nudgee Col-
lege.
There will be no visitor parking in
sons at the roundabout.
Parking inside the ground is lim-
ited. Only guests attending the
official Blessing and Re-opening
day.

He conquers who endures (cont’d)
"Nearly every person who develops an idea works at it up to the point where it looks impossible and then gets discouraged. That's not the place
to become discouraged."
and finally,
"Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work."
Like the 'first Christian' perseverance is an attribute we should all work at as being one of our life skills. So, in the midst of so many activities,
what counts at this mid point in the term is the courage to commit to the challenges of the classroom and appropriate study programs.
Our Year 12s know these times to be crucial. There is no doubt that efforts make us smarter. Our efforts are not just to reach some plateau of
learning performance but to "make good better and better best". Earlier this week our Seniors participated in two days of QCS practice tests in
preparation for the real QCS tests that will be held early next month preceding their Term 3 examination timetable. Their commitment and perseverance
to this task was most commendable. This is a very important time academically. As a recent sports commentator said: "The Game is
won or lost in the second half'. Our Seniors are clearly in the second half and are indeed playing it with a good dose of perseverance.
On Tuesday evening our Seniors and staff very much enjoyed the Senior Formal held at the Brisbane Exhibition and Convention Centre. I take
this opportunity to thank Mrs Teena Gooding and Mr David Carroll for their meticulous organisation and the House Deans and staff who assisted
with the celebration of the evening. I would also like to congratulate our Year 12s and their partners on the evening which was enjoyed by
all.
Just a reminder that tonight is the QTAC Information Evening for Year 12 students and their parents in the GT125 Theatre starting at 7pm. The
evening is being facilitated by Dr Ros Lim who is our resident expert in understanding this post-school landscape. It will be a very informative
evening for the Seniors and parents.
Last week I attended the Middle School Music Concert which was a wonderful evening. What I delighted in seeing was the progress and skill
development that occurs from Years 5-8. At the concert we had the opportunity to publicly acknowledge Mary and Norman Clarke who have
very generously supported the Lower Middle School Music program with the provision of some 240 musical instruments. Their generous support
and enthusiasm for our Music Department under the leadership of Mr Barry Bobart has produced a first-class Music program.
This Friday evening is the annual Gregory Terrace Old Boys Dinner at Tattersall's Club where The Honourable Joe Hockey MP will be the guest
speaker.
On Saturday as part of the Terrace v Nudgee round of the GPS competition, we will have a Blessing and formal Re-opening of the Tennyson
playing fields and extension to the Boatshed in a special celebration at 10.30am. Traditionally the Terrace v Nudgee day is a big one at Tennyson
and all are most welcome with the main game commencing at 2.15pm. I would ask that for the movement in and around the suburb of Tennyson
on Saturday we will require the patience of all. Please be aware there will be no parking in Vivian Street, the main access street to the
Tennyson campus. The Terrace Ladies' Group is certainly planning for a big day of hospitality and would appreciate the support of any member
of the community in the canteen.
The Catholic Colleges' Music Festival commences tomorrow through to Sunday at Villanova College. This year Terrace has 12 ensembles participating.
The Terrace Drumline which is part of the Percussion Ensembles will be leaving the Music Festival for a short while on Saturday to
perform at the beginning of the Terrace v Nudgee Rugby game.
There will be Debating and Basketball tomorrow night with our QDU Debating teams in the quarter-final stage at Brisbane Girls' Grammar and at
Terrace and the 1 st basketballers at home against Nudgee at 6.45pm. We wish our sportsmen, debaters and musicians all the best for the
weekend.
With best wishes
College Dean Mr C Mayes
QCS preparation program - The Year 12 students completed their two full day practice tests on Monday and Tuesday. These days are invaluable
for the students as it gives them a dress rehearsal of the timing and expectations of each test as well as the chance to practice for each paper.
Once again, their commitment was outstanding.
Senior Formal- The Senior Formal was held at the Convention Centre last Tuesday evening. Once again it was a great event. The students appeared
to really enjoy the night and were most cooperative throughout the evening. I would like to particularly mention Mr David Carroll and Mrs
Teena Gooding for their organisation. Also a thank-you to all of the House Deans who were able to attend and Mrs Maria Lourundos for her
time and efforts in taping the many students through the night for her Senior DVD given to the students at their graduation.
Official opening of Tennyson - This week's rugby match against Nudgee College marks the official opening of Tennyson playing fields after
their redevelopment following the 2011 floods. This week has been particularly chosen because we are playing a fellow EREA school and this
year also marks the 250 th birthday of Edmund Rice and the 150 th anniversary of the death of Br Ambrose Treacy. As always these games are the
highlight of the Rugby calendar given the large crowds and many games that are played between the two schools. It would be great if as many
students and their families as possible could attend this event. Students are reminded that this is a formal uniform day.
EREA Deputy Principal Conference – I had the pleasure of attending the annual EREA Deputy Principal's conference last Monday and Tuesday.
It was held in Melbourne. These conferences allow the Deputy Principals from each EREA school from Australia and New Zealand and
other associated schools to meet and network as well as participate in many worthwhile workshops. It is interesting to note that many issues are
common amongst our schools. In particular the matters of IT usage, cyber safety, the increased legal requirements and litigation matters placed
upon schools and the implementation of the Australian curriculum were some such issues.
Dean of Studies Mrs J Quinn
This week has been a very busy week for our Seniors. Along with assessment demands, we have had two full days of QCS practice. Prior to this
practice, we spent two lessons on a multiple choice paper of which the results were most encouraging. We now prepare for the set QCS days of 4
- 5 September where we aim to maximise what we have learned at our workshops and practices. Our Seniors have been most diligent in their
efforts to date.
This evening is the QTAC information evening for Year 12 parents and students. This evening is facilitated by Dr Ros Lim and commences in the
GT125 Theatre at 7pm. Dr Lim will explain the process around application for tertiary admissions.
My thanks to the many parents who were able to accompany their sons to the subject interviews with the Heads of Faculties. The discussions and
considerations given to the selections have been most thorough and informed by students and parents. A reminder that selection forms are due
by Thursday 23 August.
Next Thursday evening is our Year 8 Subject Selection evening. The evening commences at 7pm in the Campbell Centre where information on
each subject is offered as option courses for Year 9, 2013.
Next week on 21 August is our information evening for French Extension and English Extension and on 22 August our information evening for
Music Extension will be held.
With the myriad of activities and the demands of the term happening it is most important that all students remain focussed on their commitment to
their studies. With all the demands of assignments this term, it is imperative that these assignments are completed well and that time is then spent
on revising for subjects that also have examinations. I have encouraged our Senior students to be in 'bunker mode' – study, sleep and sport
mode only. Time invested now, is time invested in an enhanced outcome in four weeks time.
Dean of Students Mr D Carroll
Nudgee v Terrace - Unless you live underground you will be aware that this Saturday is a huge day at Tennyson. We are expecting a big crowd so
I have explained to all students what we expect regarding their behaviour. As the hosts I expect Terrace boys to be hospitable and to show our
visitors what it means to be a Terrace Gentleman. Uniform for the day is our formal winter uniform. This includes a white shirt and blazer. I have not
asked boys to wear their hat. If you have any questions please contact me at the College.
Terrace Dance - On Saturday 25 August, students in Years 8-10 are able to attend the Terrace Dance. Cost for the Dance will be $12. The dance
will commence at 7pm and conclude at 10pm. I encourage parents to drop their son at Terrace and to collect him from the College. Please do not
allow them to make there own way to the dance or home.
Mandatory reporting - As of the start of this term all staff at the College are required to report any sexual abuse to the police. This is a serious
issue and one in which people need to be informed. Taking inappropriate photos must be reported. Sending inappropriate photos on to others must
be reported. Each offence is regarded as serious and can have significant impact on an individual's future. We have raised this matter with your
sons but I would encourage you to also raise this matter. All inappropriate photos should be deleted immediately and behaviour of this kind must be
challenged.
Senior Formal - Thank-you to the wonderful band of mothers who delivered the etiquette classes to our Senior students. From all reports it was
well received. I would like to congratulate our Senior students for the respectful way they enjoyed the Formal last Tuesday evening. I was very
impressed with the standard of dress. I have invited some of the boy's partners to come to school on a regular basis as some boys have never
looked neater than they did last Tuesday night.
Middle Schooling Mrs T Kotzas & Mr M Stewart
Year 8 students are thinking ahead to next year and we look forward to discussing their academic options for Years 9 and 10 at the Subject Selection
evening next Thursday in the Campbell Centre commencing at 7pm. Students are not required to wear their uniform. We will distribute the
booklets next Wednesday and Thursday and any students who are unable to attend the evening should ensure that they have received a booklet
and see Mrs Therese Kotzas if they have any questions.
Year 6 students spent Tuesday at the Nudgee Beach Environmental Education Centre as part of their Geography unit Coastlines.
All the very best to our Middle School students who will be participating in the Catholic College’s Music Festival this weekend.
Exceptional Learners Mrs J Dignam
Homework - Parents often ask us: What do I do when he says that he does not have any homework? The answer is…there is no such thing as
no homework! Set homework + assignments + revision = homework. Encourage your son to follow this self-questioning strategy to help him manage
his workload. If he follows the flow chart below, he will always have homework.
Homework is an essential part of the learning process. It provides students with the opportunity to practise, reinforce or apply newly-acquired skills
and knowledge and to learn the skills of independent study. It also fosters initiative, responsibility and self-discipline. Parents can support their
sons by ensuring there is a work space available which is quiet and equipped; setting aside time every day for doing homework; providing guidance
and support but not answers; assisting with setting priorities; and praising and rewarding effort and persistence.
Director of Culture Mr N Wharton
Last Saturday evening our Debating community gathered for their annual dinner and Great Debate. It was a very rewarding night and the entertainment
provided by the Senior A v Parent debate was well received by the audience. I would like to thank Mr Greg Quinn, Dr Dominique Carroll,
and Judge Michael Rackemann for the outstanding display from the parent team who apparently lost by the smallest of margins. My thanks
also to our Debating chair Dr John Bashford, timekeeper Mr David Toohey, Mrs Deborah Sinnott, Mr Chris Tyquin and the many parents who
played a major role in organising this event. I am sure the boys enjoyed the opportunity to gather with their friends. This week, debates are on
Friday evening due to the Exhibition holiday. We wish all our boys the best of luck for the quarter-finals.
Our Chess teams continue to quietly achieve wins and I thank Madame Thaïs Morgan-Pertus for her leadership of this program.
The Catholic Colleges' Music Festival starts on Friday and continues until Sunday. This is an enormous festival. We have many groups entered
and I wish our boys the best of luck in their quests for gold medals.
GPS Rugby photographs - We will be taking the GPS Rugby photographs this weekend at Tennyson. This will be a full day and we would like
parent assistance in ensuring the session runs as smoothly as possible. Please check the schedule so that you and your son know when his photograph
will be taken. It is imperative that you allow yourself plenty of time as there will be restricted parking at Tennyson on Saturday. We will be
taking the photographs at the western end of the Br Charlie Dillon Boatshed on the concrete area. Please do not go upstairs to the deck as there
will be another function using that space. All players and coaches should arrive in uniform in plenty of time for their photograph.
Gallipoli 2013 - Our first meeting with potential choir members was held last week. We have offered 28 students a position in this choir and as
you can imagine everyone is excited about this opportunity. The students are required to pay for their fare to participate in this event. In support
of these students, a fundraising committee will be formed to help subsidise each student. I would hope that the All Hallows' and Terrace communities
would get behind the fundraising ventures once they are up and running. I am sure the students would appreciate any financial assistance.
Music Mr B Bobart
Last Wednesday evening was the first Middle School Concert for 2012. This was an opportunity for our younger musicians at Terrace to show their
parents and friends what they have achieved in their Music classes. With every student from Years 5 to 7 learning an instrument plus the Concert
Band and Callan Strings, there were more than 250 performers on the night. Among the appreciative audience were Mr Norm Clarke and his
sister Mary, who have provided many of the instruments for our students to play.
All the ensembles performed exceptionally well. The future of Terrace Music sounds very exciting.
This weekend is the annual Catholic Colleges' Music Festival. Terrace has 12 ensembles performing over three days with the Percussion Ensemble
2 making their festival debut. A detailed schedule of arrival times and venues has been sent out and is also on the Terrace website. Please
note the performance uniform for each ensemble as students not in the correct uniform will not perform.
Also this weekend is the Terrace/ Nudgee Rugby match. Our Drumline will be at Tennyson to help with the cheers for the 1sts game.
I would like to thank Mrs Stephanie Jackson our wonderful Music Assistant who is leaving Terrace to take up a similar position at All Hallows'.
Stephanie has been a great help to the Music staff at Terrace and we wish her well in her change of schools.
QDU Debating Mrs L O’Sullivan
Last Saturday night was the very successful annual Debating Dinner at Waterford Place. The comedy debate: That our children are leaving home
too late, between the Senior A and Mr Greg Quinn, Dr Dominique Carroll and the Judge Michael Rackemann was very funny.
The quarter-finals of the QDU competition will be held tomorrow on Friday 17 August.
Senior A is in GT125 at 7pm against BGGS, and will be arguing the affirmative: That countries that are in severe economic crisis should suspend
democratic elections and appoint economic experts as rulers. Both Year 11 teams are debating the affirmative case at Terrace, at 7pm: That Australia
should provide a guarantee of military intervention to protect democratically elected governments in the Pacific.
9.2 is arguing the negative case, at BGGS at 8.15pm against Somerville 9.3: That all political parties should have a mandatory affirmative action
quota for women.
The semi-finals will be held at BGGS and Terrace next Wednesday, with all teams having a secret topic debate. Please support all of our teams
that have reached the quarters by watching them at BGGS or Terrace tomorrow night.
Dean of Identity Mr C Ryan
I have never been to East Timor. I have read about it, watched stories on the news and met a lot of people who have been. I have had the pleasure
of teaching young men from East Timor and sharing in their story as they have grown up and graduated from school and gone to University.
One of the fascinating elements of coming to Terrace has been becoming a part of our special relationship with the ministry of the Christian Brothers
in East Timor and all of the people in the Terrace Family who are connected to the continuing story of these wonderful people.
At Assembly this week, we focussed for some time on this part of the life of our amazingly busy school. Each year, a group of Year 10 students
and staff (sometimes parents too!) travel to Timor as a part of our annual Immersion program. Of course, dozens of parents, Old Boys and friends
are members of the Terrace Timor Network which supports the ministry of the Brothers in fascinating ways including volunteering, health education
and service and in facilitating the initiatives of Just Coffee and Just Cards which provide regular employment and income for some people.
The Years 5 to 7 students and their families have also financially supported the employment of some teachers for the past few years through the
Lenten Appeal.
Our guest this week was Br Bill Tynan, who lived and worked in East Timor for the past decade. Bill is a great friend to Terrace. He has hosted
hundreds of people to Timor and continues to be greatly interested in building relationships between our school and the Timor ministry which are
mutually beneficial. Make no mistake; the life expectancy of a Timorese child is much lower than any Australian's. Make no mistake, access to
quality education and health care is extremely challenging for many Timorese children. In some parts of East Timor, accessing safe drinking water
continues to be very hard. Our friendship and support are needed and valued.
I greatly look forward to visiting East Timor for the first time and I know that I will be a welcome guest when I go. While we often think of how we
may help the people of East Timor, it is the simple impact of the hospitality, joy and humility of our friends on us that is incredible. When this year's
group of Year 10 men, Mr Rob Johnson and Mr Paul Antenucci depart in early September, they stand on the shoulders of the friendships forged
over almost a decade of journeys and on their return; they will never be quite the same. May our community continue to benefit from this change
of heart and mind which is a gift from the people of Timor.
Director of Sport Mr D Wright
As a boy growing up in Brisbane, I had a keen interest in anything to do with sport. I loved it - from sitting up at night listening to radio broadcasts
from England of the cricket to supporting the mighty Tigers at Langlands Park, Lang Park and other suburban grounds around Brisbane. Names
such as Alan Currie, Rod Morris and Jeff Fyfe are prominent in my memories of those days. But perhaps the name that sticks out the most is a
rugby league legend from an earlier era who rose to my recognition not through his playing achievements (and they were outstanding) but through
his coaching – particularly of the Queensland league teams. Barry Muir coached the Queensland side from 1974 through to 1978 (two years prior
to Origin). Muir was a long time outspoken critic of the system that allowed the best Queenslanders, who had moved to play in the Sydney competition,
to represent New South Wales – against his beloved Queensland.
Muir and Queensland faced a monumental task in those days – their opposition seemed impenetrable, unbeatable – a scenario often referred to as
matching David against Goliath.
But Muir had faith in the men of his team and stuck to a basic philosophy. He is often quoted (and misquoted) but the central theme he would
preach to his players was the opposition were "just the same as us and that they have two arms and two legs and bleed just like us; that they can't
run without legs – so chop them down every tackle."
The Queensland teams of that era were outnumbered, outplayed, outweighed and underpaid in comparison to their NSW counterparts. However,
what they did have was the want, will, courage, commitment and desire to sacrifice themselves for their mates in battle. These Queensland teams
fought hard against more favoured opponents. No-one expected them to win – sometimes they did, but in every contest they gave their best.
So what do Barry Muir and his self belief have to do with Terrace v Nudgee this weekend? Everything! Terrace will face their supposed Goliath
this weekend. This year we are better prepared than ever before. We are back at Tennyson and we have the belief that we can win.
As we head into this weekend, remember Barry Muir's words: "They are just the same as us…two legs…two arms…and they can't run without
their legs."
Forget the reputation – forget the previous results. The most important time is game time for every boy from the U13D Black through to the First
XV – what you do, how you commit, how you tackle, how you compete will decide the outcome – not reputations.
Let's tackle our Goliath this weekend and introduce them to Tennyson.
Basketball Mr A Baruksopulo
Last Saturday, Terrace competed against Brisbane Boys College. The BBC Basketball program has traditionally been very strong and this was
again evident last Saturday with Terrace only recording a few wins. It was encouraging to see Terrace Basketball fight to the end of every game
and be competitive in a lot of hard-fought games.
This week Terrace competes against Nudgee College with fixtures being played on both Friday and Saturday. It would be great for all basketballers
and supporters to stay around and watch the 1sts play. Please see the website for game times.
1st V - BBC hosted Terrace on Saturday and there was a good atmosphere for the game with a large BBC crowd in attendance. It was a good
challenge for the Terrace 1sts who were coming off a disappointing defeat to TGS last weekend.
BBC are one of the yardsticks for the GPS competition with a number of very experienced players. The Terrace boys would not be intimidated
however and had a strong start, making BBC realise this game would not be a walkover.
While we worked hard and would not allow the opposition to push us around, the relentless full court defence started to take its toll. BBC had too
much speed and size as well and over the course of 40 minutes this proved decisive.
The stand-out performer for Terrace was Declan Pang who is working hard and leading by example. Other players who had strong games were
Ed Brigden and Dan Anderton.
The Terrace 1st V is looking forward to this week's clash with Nudgee. The game will be played on Friday at 6.45pm in the Campbell Centre. The
guys are certainly looking forward to a large contingent of Terrace supporters in attendance. - Matt Hamilton-Smith (Coach)
Rugby Mr T Mandrusiak
Well done to all teams for their efforts last Saturday against BBC, BGS, Nudgee and ACGS. It was rewarding to come away with numerous wins
across all age groups but most pleasing of all was the way teams played their Rugby. The continual improvement within all teams is evident and
the last weekend's outstanding results were just reward for the dedication and time devoted by both players and coaches.
This weekend we play Nudgee College at Tennyson in our Round 5 games. It is truly the only day where all team get to play the same opposition
on the one day at the one venue. Please check the Sports page on the website for kick off times.
The College will be taking the Rugby photographs for the Yearbook. These photographs are an important historical record for the College.
This will be a very busy day at Tennyson and so you will need to allow more time than usual to get into the playing fields. The photograph schedule
can be found on the website.
Please note - This Saturday is the only day Rugby photographs will be taken. If your teams are not at the Rowing Shed (downstairs on the river
side), in uniform ready for their photograph at the allocated time, they will be marked as absent.
The GPS team of the week goes to the 13B team coached by Mr Matt Scanlan and Mr Mark Macklin. These boys are required to meet me at the
flagpoles tomorrow to receive their pizzas.
Attendance at training is improving however still not great. Once again: Training is not optional. If your son is unable to make training he is required
to let his coach know or contact the Sports Office.
Captains Corner Edward Wilson – College Vice-Captain
Unimaginable, inspirational, challenges, obstacles, disappointment, triumph and childhood dreams. These terms have been used time and time
again over the last two weeks throughout the Olympic Games as athletes have given their all for their countries.
Usain Bolt in a media interview last Friday, spoke of his childhood in a suburban area of Jamaica, as he played in the streets around his home
never dreaming until recent years that he may be catapulted onto the international stage and recognised as the fastest man on Earth. Bolt reflected
that the last four years were the most challenging of his life as he struggled with injuries and self-doubt.
What is it that sets Usain Bolt, Sally Pearson, Michael Phelps and Anna Meares apart and to be called legends? Each has suffered disappointment,
challenges and failures. Each of these athletes also has had the sheer determination to overcome every obstacle in front of them and subsequently
triumphed.
This Saturday, a challenge presents itself like no other. The traditional Terrace v Nudgee rugby clash every year provides an amazing spectacle
of rugby, sportsmanship and school spirit. Terrace hasn’t felt the feeling of victory over our greatest rival since 2004. Many people ask what
makes Terrace/Nudgee such a huge occasion on the school calendar every year. It’s not that it is a game of Rugby, it’s 121 years of shared history
that represents the foundations of our school and how Terrace got it’s colours, which makes this Saturday such a huge day in the lives of all
Terrace students.
Whatever challenges come your way, whether they are on the footy field, on the basketball court, or in the classroom, dig deep within and find that
same grit and determination that will be present this Saturday at Tennyson. The result may not place you on a podium but the satisfaction of
knowing you gave it your all will be just as satisfying.
Tennis Mr G Brimblecomb
Week 3 saw our teams record their first whitewash of the season. Our teams 1 – 4 all scored resounding wins against Iona while teams 5 – 8 all
scored big wins against St Pats. Teams 1 and 5 have recorded their first wins for the season with good wins over quality opposition. The doubles
work we have been concentrating on in training has really paid off with only one doubles set being dropped for the day.
Our overall results were: Team 1, 40 - 14; Team 2, 40 - 4; Team 3, 40 - 2; Team 4, 31 - 25; Team 5, 40 - 7; Team 6, 40 - 7; Team 7, 40 - 16; Team
8, 40 - 9.
Our better individual performances came from Mitchell George and Charlie Van Balen with a 14 – 0 and Ed Baker, Ned Aylward, George
Campbell, Hudson Mulcahy and Ben Wilson- Boyd with 14 - 1 win/loss ratios were our best performers for the day. These boys are really putting
some pressure on the year level best percentage players.
For those who don’t know, I am recording the win/loss ratios of each player each week and will come up with a best win/loss percentage for the
season.
Congratulations to our teams of the week. Teams 2 and 3 again share the honours and the Friday pizzas. This week we are on a bye. However
there is still plenty of Tennis to be played with our Age championships being contested on the Ekka Holiday Wednesday.
Congratulations to Pat Morris who reached the Junior Masters final on the weekend at Churchie and Harry Rackemann who narrowly lost in his
quarter-final match.
Track and Field Mr C Humphrys
CIC - Congratulations to all the boys who competed in the annual College Age Championships on Saturday morning. There were some fantastic
results seen and recorded as boys from Years 5-7 fought hard and fair across three of their best events. In Year five we saw two boys who couldn't
be separated even through our countback system. Tom Burns and Aymeric Morgan finished joint Under 10 age champions while Zac Boland
and Jacob Ruff took out the Under 11 and 12 competitions respectively.
This week we travel to Mt Gravatt (QSAC) for the annual Junior Schools Competition. With the first event scheduled for 8am, it is important athletes
arrive by 7.30am for their warm up. Please check the website for full details. The program for this week is very different to previous weeks.
GPS - One week to go! The GPS season kicks off officially next Friday night (24 August) with Terrace hosting the first invitational meet of the year.
The Grand Prix events are the hurdles, 200m, 800m and triple jump events, so it is important we fill those events with our best athletes in order to
defend our title from 2011. Again, the program is available on the website and through the student booklet.
On Wednesday, 29 August, we will be taking our four best sprinters from each age group out to UQ to commence our relay training. Current Brisbane
Bronco and Old Boy, Lachlan Maranta, will be running these sessions. Athletes will return by 5.30pm. See you on the track.
Gymnastics Mr B McCulloch
Terrace Gymnastics has been in full swing for the past couple of weeks. The season officially started with group training at BBC on Saturday 21
July when all GPS gymnasts were taken through all the apparatus by coaches and judges.
The following week, Terrace completed against BBC at BBC where all Terrace gymnasts in Divisions 1, 2 and 3 completed and achieved impressive
scores.
Last weekend, Terrace competed at BGS against TSS and TGS. Again, the results were impressive and a number of our gymnasts improved on
their previous results.
This weekend, Terrace will compete against BGS at BBC. I would remind gymnasts of the need to arrive at least half an hour prior to the commencement
of the competition and to wear their correct uniform.
A reminder that the GPS Championships will be held at The Southport School on Saturday, 1 September. The first competition will be the Division
3 competition, commencing at 8am. While it is a long day, it is a most enjoyable and entertaining day for both competitors and supporters alike.
Challenge Program
Introducing "The Simpson Prize"
Terrace is proud to announce that we will be submitting three entries for this prestigious competition this year.
Students who have received an A for their History result last Semester have been invited to participate in this competition. Students are
expected to write an essay or create an audio-visual presentation of their understanding of primary sources and the Gallipoli experience in
response to the ANZAC legend. Students were invited via school email last Friday. Further details can be found at
www.simpsonprize.org Please discuss this opportunity with your son.
Meanjin Writers Camp
This is a unique experience for gifted writers to work with published authors to improve their writing skills. It is open for students in
Years 6, 7 and 8 and will occur in week 4 Term 4. There is a detailed application to complete with writing samples and costs to cover the
event. Please look on www.meanjin.edu.au for further details.
I have sent an email to all parents of students who were invited or participate in our Challenge Program. This has further details on
each of our current programs. Please let me know if you did not receive this email.
