<strong>Syllabus</strong><strong>For</strong><strong>The</strong> <strong>Foundation</strong> <strong>Certificate</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Funeral</strong> <strong>Service</strong><strong>ooOoo</strong>Awarded byTHE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF FUNERALDIRECTORSIn conjunction withTHE BRITISH INSTITUTE OF FUNERAL DIRECTORS<strong>ooOoo</strong>This <strong>Foundation</strong> <strong>Certificate</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Funeral</strong> <strong>Service</strong> has been designed to provide an<strong>in</strong>troduction to the funeral service and is suitable for:• Those actively seek<strong>in</strong>g to enter the funeral profession;• Recent recruits to the profession;• Those wish<strong>in</strong>g to become qualified <strong>in</strong> funeral service• Those wish<strong>in</strong>g to study for the Diploma <strong>in</strong> <strong>Funeral</strong> Direct<strong>in</strong>gNB Students successfully complet<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>Foundation</strong> <strong>Certificate</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Funeral</strong> <strong>Service</strong>can then go on to study for the Diploma <strong>in</strong> <strong>Funeral</strong> Direct<strong>in</strong>g, provided that they areemployed <strong>in</strong> the funeral service on a m<strong>in</strong>imum basis of eighty hours per month.<strong>ooOoo</strong>


THE FOUNDATION CERTIFICATE IN FUNERAL SERVICEUNIT ONE(a)(b)<strong>The</strong> role of the funeral director<strong>The</strong> NAFD Code of Practice and the funeral director<strong>The</strong> student should be aware of the ‘role of the funeral director <strong>in</strong> the community, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>gfunctions, attributes, manner and dress.<strong>The</strong> student should have a work<strong>in</strong>g knowledge of the NAFD Code of Practice.Assessment of the unit:I. Work set out by the tutor.II. Write an essay on ‘Discuss how the funeral director could be <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> his/her localcommunity, thereby mak<strong>in</strong>g the profession more open and approachable’NB <strong>The</strong> essay is to be written, not typed and have a m<strong>in</strong>imum of 500 words – two pages <strong>in</strong> length andsubmitted to the tutor for assessment and subsequent moderation by the exam<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g body.UNIT TWO(a)<strong>The</strong> funeral director and Health and Safety<strong>The</strong> student should be aware of Health and Safety Law particularly the COSHHRegulations and responsibilities of both the employer and the employee.Assessment of the Unit:I. Work set by tutor.II. Completion of ‘Health, Safety and Welfare at Work Act’ packIII. Visit a funeral home with a qualified funeral director, pay<strong>in</strong>g particular attention to:• Reception area, arrang<strong>in</strong>g room(s) and office• Chapel(s) of rest• Toilet facilities and staff facilities• Mortuary/embalm<strong>in</strong>g facilities• Workshops and garage• Adherence to health and safety regulations throughout the premises – funeral andhealth and safety.Write a report on the visit and submit to your tutor for assessment and subsequentmoderation by the exam<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g body.UNIT THREE – Communications(a)(b)<strong>The</strong> student should be aware of the personal communication skills <strong>in</strong>volved when deal<strong>in</strong>gwith clients, the skills required for communication at work and forms of transportation used <strong>in</strong>funeral service.<strong>The</strong> student should have a work<strong>in</strong>g knowledge of communication by writ<strong>in</strong>g letters,communicat<strong>in</strong>g by telephone/fax and other systems used <strong>in</strong> funeral service.


Assessment of Unit:I. Work set by the tutorII. Completion of ‘Effective Correspondence ‘PackIII. Write an essay on‘My Leisure activities’NB <strong>The</strong> essay must be written, not typed, be at least 500 words <strong>in</strong> length – approx two pages <strong>in</strong> length andsubmitted to your tutor for assessment and subsequent moderation by the exam<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g body.UNIT FOUROffice Practice(a)(b)(c)(d)<strong>The</strong> student should be aware of forms used <strong>in</strong> the office, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g those used for – estimates,cemeteries, crematoria and confirmation to m<strong>in</strong>isters etc.<strong>The</strong> student should have a basic knowledge of wage systems used <strong>in</strong> the funeral service.<strong>The</strong> student should be aware that a death needs to be registered and can be reported to theCoroner <strong>in</strong> certa<strong>in</strong> circumstances.<strong>The</strong> student should be aware of what is <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> the arrangement of a funeral, either bysitt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> on a funeral arrangement be<strong>in</strong>g carried out by a Diploma holder or by tak<strong>in</strong>g part <strong>in</strong>a simulated exercise organized by the tutor.Assessment of the Unit:Work set by the tutor.UNIT FIVEMarket Research – Advertis<strong>in</strong>g – Governmental Agencies<strong>The</strong> student should be aware of:(a)Market research and its value to the funeral service.(b)(c)<strong>The</strong> advantages and disadvantages of advertis<strong>in</strong>g and of the acceptable forms of advertis<strong>in</strong>gavailable to the funeral director.<strong>The</strong> various external agencies which affect funeral service <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g – <strong>The</strong> Office of FairTrad<strong>in</strong>g, Dept of Trade, Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Dept forWork and Pensions, Local Authorities, Citizens Advice Bureau.Assessment of the Unit:Work set by the tutor.UNIT SIXBuy<strong>in</strong>g and Sell<strong>in</strong>g – <strong>The</strong> Bank<strong>in</strong>g system – Insurance<strong>The</strong> student should have knowledge of:(a)Simple book keep<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g – order<strong>in</strong>g goods, delivery notes, <strong>in</strong>voices, credit notes,statements, receipts, discounts.


(b)(c)<strong>The</strong> advantages and disadvantages of – hire purchase, leas<strong>in</strong>g, rental, contract hire.<strong>The</strong> function of banks and build<strong>in</strong>g societies – the various services which are available – thenature and purpose of direct debits, stand<strong>in</strong>g orders, bankers drafts, cheques and credit/debitcards.Assessment of UnitWork set by the tutor.UNIT SEVENBEREAVEMENT AND CLIENT CARE<strong>The</strong> student should be aware of:(a)(b)(c)His/her attitude towards death<strong>The</strong> role of the funeral director from the time of the’ first call’ through to the funeral serviceand follow<strong>in</strong>g the funeral.<strong>The</strong> importance of client care.Assessment of Unit;I. Work set by the tutorII. Completion of ‘Client Care –A professional service’ pack.III. Student to visit a Bereavement Counsellor to discuss his/her views on counsell<strong>in</strong>g and ways ofdeal<strong>in</strong>g with the bereaved, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g:• How the Counsellor is approached to provide support• What support is given and for how long• What support groups are available <strong>in</strong> the student’s area and their purpose?• <strong>The</strong> relationship between – counselor, client, funeral director, support groupsWrite a report on the visit and submit to your tutor for assessment and subsequent moderation.ASSESSMENT OF THE FOUNDATION CERTIFICATE(a)(b)(c)Seven tutor marked assignments.Two essays and two reports – as <strong>in</strong>dicated above.A formal written assessment consist<strong>in</strong>g of a 90 m<strong>in</strong>ute paper, set by the NAFD, cover<strong>in</strong>gsubjects detailed above.<strong>The</strong> assessment is forwarded by the tutor to the NAFD for mark<strong>in</strong>g and will be moderatedtogether with the two essays and two reports.In order to be awarded the <strong>Foundation</strong> <strong>Certificate</strong> the student needs to achieve at least a Grade’C’ (60%) <strong>in</strong>all sections.<strong>For</strong>mal assessments are held <strong>in</strong> February, June and November of each year, the assessment be<strong>in</strong>g taken<strong>in</strong> the student’s area under the supervision of an approved <strong>in</strong>vigilator.<strong>For</strong>mal assessment dates for 2009 are: 04 November 200903 February 201002 June 201003 November 2010
