MESSAGE to OUR COMMUNITYFor months now, we’ve watched hopefully as our legislators have engaged in heateddiscussions about the best way to reform the system. Each day, it seemed, new proposalsemerged, were revised, debated and sometimes dropped. Ideas appeared to befavored by most members of Congress or the President, only to be abandoned whenanother interest group or political faction raised objections. It’s been an emotionalroller coaster. At this writing, it seems clear that the practice of medicine—as an art, a science,a profession and a business—is about to undergo a major change. Many of us haveanticipated this change—with varying degrees of hope and excitement—for a longtime. Still, as it begins to look real, we are apprehensive about unexpected compromisesthat may not be good for patients, doctors or hospitals. As we move forward to a final bill, we are starting to pay more attention to someof the subtler details. Whatever the final proposal, ways to pay for it will have tobe found. Many in the latest round of ideas suggested are directed at making thehealthcare system more efficient; that is, both more effective for patients and morecost effective for payors.Concepts like “reducing readmissions” (a good idea that can be complicated byinner city medical and socio-economic factors) “bundling payments” (paying hospitalsand doctors a lump sum for all of the costs related to a patient’s care) and increasingthe use of “evidence based medicine” (the attempt to move the “art” of medicinecloser to a science) have been introduced into the debate. Many of these conceptsmake sense—at least in theory. But when put into practice with real patients and specificsituations, they may not always live up to their promise—and sometimes theymay even have unintended negative consequences.Much of our concern also lies in regulations that bureaucrats will generate tointerpret the new law. Here is where we most fear that disadvantages to both doctorsand hospitals may emerge. As a Hospital, there is relatively little we can do to control the debate—or itsconsequences. But, as you can see in the Report that follows, we are maintaining ourefforts to produce new initiatives and strategic program development. And—mostimportant—we are doing everything possible to nurture a culture of patient-centeredcare.Our extraordinary staff of doctors, nurses, health professionals, support staff, trusteesand volunteers is well aware that we are all here to serve the patient. We havewonderful technology at NYM, and that enables us to provide care very efficiently, butour employees are focused on the needs of the patient. In that way, they continue touphold the long held mission of New York Methodist Hospital: to provide excellentand compassionate care to the people of Brooklyn.Mark J. MundyPresident and CEOJohn E. innovation at new york methodist hospitalLast year was an exciting one for New York MethodistHospital. Not only did we cut the ribbon on new facilitiesand programs, we also announced a number of innovativemedical procedures. NYM has been recognized for our workboth inside and outside of the hospital. We look forward toanother exciting year and to keeping New York MethodistHospital on the cutting edge of health care.nym has beenrecognizedfor our workboth insideand outsideof the hospital.New Centers and ProgramsThe newly constructed Park Slope Infusion Center, located at 342 Fourth Avenue, began accepting patientsin October of 2008. In addition to offering treatment formost types of cancer, the center offers infusion therapyfor blood disorders, rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease, multiple sclerosis and osteoporosis. The facility includes29 private treatment stations, an on-site pharmacy, twolaboratories, two nursing stations, physician offices andan examination room. The Hospital’s newly renovated physician offices at OneProspect Park West made their debut. The construction ofthe new site allowed NYM to expand services in urology, pediatrics, podiatry and orthopedics, and wound care. The Brooklyn Spine and Arthritis Center opened a satelliteoffice at the One Prospect Park facility in order to betterserve the growing number of individuals in Brooklynseeking orthopedic services. The Center also welcomedseveral new orthopedic surgeons. “The expansion ofthe Spine Center has allowed us to include experts inorthopedic subspecialties such as osteoporosis and hiparthroscopies,” said Henry Tischler, M.D., chief of theDivision of Orthopedics. Located across the street fromGrand Army Plaza, one of Brooklyn’s most famouslandmarks, the offices at One Prospect Park West areeasily accessible, spacious and comfortable. In the fall of 2009, NYM’s Center for Allied HealthEducation opened the School of Diagnostic MedicalSonography. The program requires two years ofcoursework, with learning concentrations in generalsonography and cardiac sonography. The School ofDiagnostic Medical Sonography represents the latestaddition to New York Methodist Hospital’s allied healtheducation offerings, which include the Bartone Schoolof Radiography, the NYM School of Radiation TherapyTechnology, the NYM School of Medical Technologyand the NYM EMS Institute/Paramedic Program.New ProceduresThe New York Methodist-Cornell Heart Center nowoffers a number of new procedures, many of which areminimally invasive. Once such minimally invasiveprocedure is used to treat thoracic aortic aneurysms.During the surgery, an incision is made that allows thesurgeon to pass a stent graft into the thoracic aorta.Following the procedure, blood travels through the stentand bypasses the aneurysm, creating a new pathway forblood flow. “The procedure requires a team approachbecause two areas of specialization are required for theplacement of the thoracic stent graft” said Leonard Y.Lee, M.D., program director of cardiac surgery at NYM,who performs the procedure with Marcus D’Ayala, M.D.,NYM’s chief of vascular surgery. A minimally invasivealternative to traditional mitral valve surgery is now alsoavailable for qualified patients. Traditional procedures, which involve dividing the breastbone in order to reachthe heart, are replaced by an alternative procedurewhere only a four-inch incision is required to repairthe faulty valve.

The New York Methodist-Cornell Heart Center also initiatedcardiac resynchronization therapy, which is designed tocorrect ventricular dyssynchrony—an abnormality in theheart that causes its two lower chambers to stop beatingsimultaneously, making the heart less efficient. Like apacemaker, a cardiac resynchronization device sends tinyelectrical pulses via soft insulated wires to the lowerchambers of the heart to synchronize the contractionsof the ventricles. The device also improves the heart’sability to pump blood and oxygen throughout the body.Additionally, the New York Methodist-Cornell HeartCenter is now performing “real time” stress MRI testing,a new feature of cardiac MRI, which offers physiciansan alternative for diagnosing coronary artery disease inpatients who are unable to exercise because of healthreasons. Stress tests provide doctors with informationabout how well the heart performs under physical stress.NYM is the only hospital in Brooklyn performing the test. The Department of Radiology began offering cryoablationand radiofrequency ablation (RFA), two minimally invasivetreatments for cancer. Cryoablation involves freezinga tumor through the placement of probes that generatean “ice ball” around the cancerous tissue. RFA useselectrodes to transmit radiofrequency energy from thetip of a needle, where it produces heat in the tissues.Recognizing that a multidisciplinary approach tocombating obesity is the most effective way to deal withthe complexities of weight loss management, New YorkMethodist Hospital, initiated a physician supervisedComprehensive Weight Management Program. “Theprogram aims to tackle obesity and weight managementthrough a partnership between patients, their familiesand our health care team,” said Alfred Leong, M.D., theprogram’s medical director. In addition, the program offersbariatric surgery, which has been proven to be the mosteffective way to achieve and maintain significant weightloss, is an option for patients who are deemed morbidlyobese. New York Methodist Hospital has been accreditedas a Center of Excellence for Bariatric Surgery.called balloon sinuplasty—uses a guidewire and catheter tothread a tiny, flexible balloon through the sinus cavitiesto the site of the obstruction. The balloon is then inflatedwhich widens the sinus and clears the blockage.NYM’s Division of Urology acquired a new high-poweredgreen light laser that can be used to treat benign prostatichyperplasia (BPH). The green light laser uses a speciallydesigned light source and fiber optic delivery system toimmediately and gently vaporize the enlarged prostate tissue.Awards and RecognitionFor the fourth year in a row, the National ResearchCorporation named NYM a Consumer’s Choice AwardWinner for “Best Doctors, Best Nurses, Best OverallQuality and Best Image Reputation,” as determined byconsumers in the borough of Brooklyn. The American Stroke Association recently named NewYork Methodist Hospital a Get-With-The-Guidelines-Stroke(GWTG Stroke) Silver Performance Achievement Award winner.NYM was designated a UnitedHealth Premium Total JointReplacement Specialty Center in recognition of its totaljoint replacement surgery program. The Hospital won a 2008 Regional Commuter ChoiceInnovator Award for providing commuter benefit programsthat encourage employees to make use of environmentallyfriendly alternatives like carpooling, vanpooling and masstransit instead of single occupancy vehicles. The Division of Otolaryngology at NYM introduced anew surgical procedure that alleviates the pain of sinusitisby clearing blockages in the sinus, allowing the sinus todrain bacteria that can cause infections. It was a happy time, driving his daughter backto Brooklyn from Pittsburgh. Joseph Klimko, 62,was thrilled to spend that time with her and toarrive in Brooklyn to see his grandchildren graduatefrom their schools. But when he woke up ongraduation morning and felt familiar pains in hisjaw, neck and right arm, he knew he wasn’t goingto make the graduation ceremonies. He needed to get to a hospital fast. His daughter called 911.Six years earlier, he had experiencedthe same set of painsand wound up undergoing acardiac catheterization andangioplasty. He was sure thathis heart was in trouble again, yet because his symptoms wereatypical—heart issues don’t usuallypresent in the jaw—he wasworried that the concerns abouthis heart would be dismissed. When hearrived at New York Methodist Hospital, herealized that he had nothing to worry about. “Whatimpressed me most was that they listened. I toldthem about my concerns about my heart and theylistened to what I was saying rather than justfollowing a prescribed list of symptoms,” saysMr. Klimko. While in the Emergency Department, Mr. Klimkowas evaluated by cardiologist Hajir Dilmanian, M.D.“Here was a man who had high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes. Because of hisprevious heart history, I knew that we needed toget his cardiac health evaluated immediately,”Dr. Dilmanian recalls.“I remember Dr. Dilmanian reading my testresults and telling me, ‘let’s go.’ He had personallypatientjoseph klimkodiagnosisCoronary Heart DiseaseareasEmergency DepartmentCardiologywalked me up to the New York Methodist-Cornell Heart Center EKG/Stress Test lab wheretesting started right away. Then he walked me tomeet with Terrence Sacchi, M.D., chief of cardiology, and arranged for the cardiac catheterization,”Mr. Klimko says.“The catheterization showed that therewere significant blockages in a numberof Mr. Klimko’s arteries. It was clearthat he that needed immediateattention” remembers Dr. Sacchi,“and we made sure that ithappened.”“By that evening, I wasin the cardiac catheterizationlaboratory room with Dr. Sacchi, getting my first set of stents, which open up blood flow inthe arteries. I have never experiencedsuch personal and dedicatedservice,” recounts Mr. Klimko. Thefollowing Monday, Dr. Sacchi insertedanother set of stents, and shortly thereafter,Mr. Klimko was discharged. He is now back in Pittsburgh and his health isbeing monitored by doctors there. But he knowsthat it is the doctors in Brooklyn who saved hislife. “I was amazed at how quickly I was evaluatedand treated. Such quick responsiveness is rare.Dr. Sacchi and Dr. Dilmanian provided me with topnotchmedical care; and the nurses were amazing. My whole experience at New York MethodistHospital was terrific—from the EmergencyDepartment to interventional cardiology to thenursing staff. Everyone was courteous and professional. The doctors were a very good team; I justcan’t say enough.”care

When Coretta and Theo Johnson broughttheir two-year-old daughter, Thea, to the EmergencyDepartment (ED) with pneumonia inMarch, they didn’t expect to hear a chorusof “It’s Baby Johnson!” But they weren’t entirelysurprised; they had practically lived at New YorkMethodist Hospital when Thea was born, veryprematurely, at 27 weeks. From the Emergency Department, Thea wastransferred to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit(PICU), to be treated for her pneumonia, whereshe was greeted with equal enthusiasm. The staffall knew her from a harrowing five-monthstay in the Neonatal Intensive CareUnit (NICU) and the PICU earlierin her short life.Thea weighed only 2.2 poundsat birth. That, however, was theleast of her problems. She hadsevere respiratory distress andover time, her condition evolvedinto chronic lung disease. Inchronic lung disease, the lungsbecome very fibrous as damagedtissue is replaced by stiff, less elastictissue, making breathing difficult.Thea’s neonatologist, Nitin Ron, M.D.,used increasingly sophisticated therapies toimprove the flexibility in her lungs to allow forbetter ventilation. Nothing worked; her lungsremained too stiff. It didn’t look like she wasgoing to make it.Dr. Ron reached out to Felix Khusid, RRT,director of respiratory therapy, to see what elsemight be done to help her. Due to the severity ofher condition, Mr. Khusid suggested a non-conventionaluse of the volumetric diffusive respirator(VDR), a life support system that delivers aunique form of ventilation. However, such actionwas nearly unprecedented and had been utilizedon premature infants only in a specialized NICUpatientthea JohnSONdiagnosisChronic lung diseaseareasEmergency Department,NICU, PICURespiratory Therapyin Belgium. But Thea’s condition was desperate, and with the approval of Madhu Gudavalli, M.D.,chief of the neonatal intensive care unit, theydecided to move ahead with this innovativetherapy. The VDR expanded Thea’s lungs, wherethe previous therapies had not. Mr. Khusidremembers, “Finally, after all the preparation, thebaby was transitioned to the VDR and she remainedon it for the next five days. A respiratory therapiststayed at her bedside around the clock to provideall the necessary advanced ventilatory support. As of this writing, we are the only hospitalin the tri-state area that has thisvery sophisticated technology.”Although Thea’s lungs were nowable to expand adequately enoughfor sufficient ventilation, shereceived a tracheostomy toensure successful breathing. After more than fivemonths in the NICU / PICU,Thea was discharged. Dr. Ronremembers, “Thea was a fightersince day one. The entire experiencemay have been overwhelmingfor another premature infant, but notfor Thea.”It was her fighting spirit which was sofondly remembered when Thea was admittedto the PICU after her March visit to the ED for pneumonia.Jane Fong, M.D., chief of pediatric criticalcare, says “It is not uncommon for us to see a childthat has such a stormy beginning come back to thehospital on occasion. When we saw Thea, it wasso rewarding. She was this wonderful, playfullittle two-year old, with her own personality andreaching all of her developmental milestones. That she is a thriving, happy child is a truetestament to what can be achieved when all ofthe medical disciplines come together.”care

Joseph Collura shook his head as he listenedto the story of the man who had been hit bythe tractor-trailer truck while crossing FourthAvenue. This man was in a medically inducedcoma in the intensive care unit for two weeks andin the hospital for five weeks. Mr. Collura had norecollection that, in fact, he was this man.“He was in the worst condition that one couldbe in and still be considered alive,” remembers AlexGuerrero, M.D., who was then chief surgical resident.“When the ambulance arrived, the emergencymedicine and surgical staffs just descendedupon him—he had an open skull fracturewith pieces of bone buried in his brain,a broken collarbone and ribs, puncturedlung, damaged liver andspleen, and his broken femurwas poking through the skin, obviously badly fractured. Hehad no neurological signs oflife—only a pulse, and a weakone at that.”Mr. Collura, 57, considershimself incredibly lucky that hedoesn’t remember a thing aboutthe accident. He was taken immediatelyto the operating room where thetrauma surgery team worked for five hours tosave his life. His lung was re-expanded, and a windowwas put into his skull, around the fracture.Pieces of broken bone were carefully picked outof his brain tissue. A metal cage was then quicklyconstructed around the femur, with pins into thebone to hold it in the correct position. All thiswas done while treating his bleeding spleen andliver. “We were hoping for the best, but expectingthe worst” said Dr. Guerrero.Mr. Collura spent another week in NYM’sintensive care unit on a ventilator before he wasstable enough to breathe on his own. From thatpatientjoseph colluradiagnosisFull-body traumaareaSEmergency Department,Surgery, RehabilitationMedicinetime he has smudgy memories of faces and wordsof care from the nurses. One thing he remembersclearly though is the feeling of devoted care hereceived, “There wasn’t a time when I didn’t feelsafe when they treated me. They spoke to me,touched me, explained what was going on withmy care, their facial expressions always showedme their genuine concern, and I was so deeplytouched when they visited me after I wastransferred to another floor.” And Mr. Colluraknows about nursing; he’s been a registerednurse for 35 years, 28 of those years as an intensivecare nurse. He followed an aggressive protocolof physical therapy, and withinthree weeks, was up and out ofbed. “My physical therapistswere highly skilled, educatedand professional. Because oftheir motivation, I was able toavoid being transferred to aninpatient rehab facility. By thetime I was discharged home, Iwas walking more than 1000 feetwith a cane and could climb twoflights of stairs.””New York Methodist is trulya healing institution. Paul Issack, M.D., myorthopedic surgeon; Bashar Fahoum, M.D., directorof the surgical ICU and Ruben Toribio, M.D.,chief of trauma surgery, are not only men ofscience, they are humanitarians. I have not meta more caring group of physicians. New YorkMethodist should be proud of its entire staff.“Everyone at NYM gave me encouragement andconstant positive reinforcement. The rehabilitationstaff was incredible. They created an experiencethat never made me feel sorry for myself, andwith life-threatening injuries like mine, that issaying a lot. I will always be thankful to them.”care

Reverend Hope Johnson had been feeling sickfor a while but just didn’t want to give it herattention. She had too much to do: She wasbusy as a minister for a Unitarian Universalistcongregation in Garden City, Long Island. Plus, she traveled around the world, advocating fora number of causes. When it was time for herannual physical, she mentioned to her doctor,Alfred Leong, M.D., that she had been experiencinga little shortness of breath, especially whenshe climbed the subway stairs.Dr. Leong suggested that she see SuhailRaoof, M.D., chief of pulmonology andcritical care medicine at New YorkMethodist Hospital. Dr. Raoof foundthat Rev. Jackson’s x-rays wereconsistent with sarcoidosis, adisease where tissues becomeinflamed with granulomas. Oftenthese granulomas, or smallgrowths, can cause permanentdamage resulting in scarringand breathing difficulties. Sometimesother organs such as theeyes, bones, skin, heart and centralnervous system may be affected as well.“Sarcoidosis can burn itself out,but sometimes it leaves scar tissue,” saidDr. Raoof. “However, in 30 percent of cases, thesarcoidosis progresses and becomes more pervasive. This was the case with Rev. Jackson—a CTscan showed small nodules in the lungs, suggestingthat the sarcoidosis was still active.”Although it is rare, sometimes sarcoidosiscan also involve the heart. Any scar tissue thatbuilds up in the heart as a result of the disease cannegatively affect the way in which electricity isdelivered throughout the heart, and may result inirregular heartbeats, which could be sudden andfatal. Because Rev. Jackson travels so extensively, patientreverendhope johnsondiagnosisSarcoidosisareaPulmonology,CardiologyDr. Raoof didn’t want her flying around the worldwith such a risky condition. To see if the sarcoidosis had indeed spreadto her heart, John Heitner, M.D., director ofnon-invasive imaging in the department of cardiology, evaluated the condition of her heart usinga cardiac MRI, the only imaging modality thatreveals the composition of the heart muscle. “Herheart showed the classic features of sarcoidosis:granulomas/fibrosis in the superficial and midmusculartissue of the heart,” said Dr. Heitner.“The replacement of Rev. Jackson’s normalheart muscle with the fibrosis leaves heropen to complications. We are currentlyfurther investigating her riskfor complications by having anelectrical study performed onher heart. She may very wellend up needing a defibrillator.“This was a great diagnosis byDr. Raoof; he may very well havesaved her life,” says Dr. Heitner.Rev. Jackson says that shefeels “blessed” to have metDr. Raoof and Dr. Heitner, andfeels totally safe in their hands.“They know me to be a worrier, so theygo the extra mile to make sure that I feelcomfortable.” In fact, She was admitted for an unrelatedsurgery, and both doctors were in the operatingroom to makes sure there were no complications.Reflecting on her experience at NYM,Rev. Jackson says, “I began to study and learn awhole new vocabulary about my condition. Whileseeing Dr. Raoof and Dr. Heitner, I began to reallyunderstand about the juxtapositions and interconnectivitybetween the different fields of medicineat New York Methodist, and saw that the fieldsworked together towards a common goal, with anintegration of values.”care11

“I thought I was doomed to a life of staringat the ground, of looking at feet instead of faces,”recalls Neil Johnson, 59. Mr. Johnson had beendiagnosed with Parkinson’s disease almost fiveyears earlier, and although everything was beingdone to retard the disease’s progress, his torsomuscles continued to constrict and pull himdownwards. “It was like there was a big rubberband around my neck that was pulling me downharder and harder.” Miran Salgado, M.D., chief ofneurosciences at New York Methodist Hospital, had been treating Mr. Johnson’s Parkinson’s forthe last few years. And although he hadMr. Johnson on an increasinglyaggressive treatment, Dr. Salgadoknew that surgery would be theonly way to correct Mr. Johnson’sposture. At Dr. Salgado’s suggestion,Mr. Johnson met with AndrewMerola, M.D., a spine surgeonat NYM. Dr. Merola assessedMr. Johnson’s x-rays and concludedthat surgery could indeedhelp him stand up straight, butthere were risks; it was a very trickysurgery. Mr. Johnson served as a medicduring the Vietnam War and spent the past35 years working as a registered nurse for specialprocedures so he was well aware of the risk. Evenso, he remembers thinking, “I can’t go on the wayI am, knowing it was only going to get worse. Ihave a lot of life ahead of me and I couldn’t bearthe thought of my head dropping closer and closerto my knees. I knew I had to do the surgery—evenwith the risks.”Dr. Merola scheduled him for a pedicle subtractionosteotomy (PSO). “This is a complicatedoperation, but one that yields such an amazingimprovement in the patient’s quality of life, it ispatientNEIL JOHNSONdiagnosisParkinson’s DiseaseareasOrthopedic Surgery,Neurologyalmost always worth the risk. Plus, surgery wasnecessary to correct a previous spinal fusion thathad begun to come undone due to the extremecurvature of his spine,” said Dr. Merola. In a PSO,the spinal pedicles—the wing-like structuresthat protrude from the vertebra—are chiseleddown and a triangular shape is cut into thevertebra, allowing movement. This procedurewas performed on the entirety of Mr. Johnson’slumbar spine, which allowed for the spine to be“snapped” back into a vertical direction again. The spine will hold its new shape through the useof bone grafts, rods and pins. “It will takealmost a full year for the spine to becompletely healed, but Mr. Johnsonis now standing fully uprightand, with the aid of a walker, ambulatory,” reports Dr. Merola.“I am excited about thisnew lease on life, and to getback into the kitchen and intomy garden and to return tothe things I love to do. I am sothankful for the care and treatmentI received from Dr. Salgadoand Dr. Merola and the staff at NewYork Methodist Hospital. They trulychanged my life, and I am looking forward tothe future.”before sugeryspine aftersurgerycare13

When they first moved to Flatbush, theTishcoffs were glad to know there was a goodhospital nearby, should they ever need it. Littledid they know that New York Methodist Hospitalwould become such a part of their family’s history.“Twenty years ago, I came to the EmergencyDepartment at Methodist; I needed stitches on myfoot,” remembers Mrs. Hazel Tishcoff. “I didn’thave a family doctor at the time and a friend recommendedWilliam Destefano, M.D. He becameour family doctor. He took care of my father andto this day, he is still my internist, as well as myhusband’s, my daughter’s and her husband’s.”New York Methodist became thepatientsthe TishcofffamilyareasEmergency Medicine,Internal Medicine,Surgery, Cardiology,Obstetricsfamily hospital for the Tishcoffs. In2001, Mrs. Tishcoff’s husband wasin the Intensive Care Unit atNYM recovering from an emergencycolectomy—a surgical removalof part of the colon—as aresult of colonic diverticulosis.Colonic diverticulosis occurswhen small pouches form on theoutside of the colon. Unfortunately,Mr. Tishcoff’s emergency occurredright before his daughter Leah’s wedding, and due to his condition, he couldnot attend. Leah remembers, “Not only did thestaff hook up a computer so that my father couldwatch the wedding, in real time, from his bed, they made every accommodation so my husband, our immediate family, and I could come to hisbedside and re-create the moment for him. It isthat level of personalized care and considerationthat makes New York Methodist stand out.”Mr. Tishcoff was admitted to NYM again in2006 after having a cardiac arrest and was beingtreated by David Schifter, M.D., a cardiologist. Hewas in a coma for several days before he recovered.Mrs. Tishcoff remembers, “One day, Dr. Shiftersaw me coming off of the elevator, and he saw howworried I was. He took me to one of the Hospital’sFamily Conference Rooms and gave me a thoroughupdate of my husband’s condition. Thatconference was so comforting; it was a steadyinghand when I needed it. And I received the samelevel of care and consideration while I was in theHospital three years later. What consistency!”In early 2009, Mrs. Tishcoff was rushed toNYM with a ruptured appendix. Thanks to quicktreatment with antibiotics by Dr. Destefano andPrasad Gudavalli, M.D., her surgeon, she was ableto avoid an operation. She was pleased with hermedical treatment, but even more impressed withhow truly cared for she felt. “Everybody—fromthe doctors to the nurse technicians treatedme so sincerely and with such attentiveness.I was in the hospital forthree weeks, and throughout theentire stay, everyone was so niceto me, and so caring.”Leah also had each of hertwo children here at New YorkMethodist. “I had seen, firsthand, what a top-notch institutionthis was and knew thatFayez Guirguis, M.D., was an excellentobstetrician. I didn’t evenconsider having my children anywhereother than NYM.”Over the years, the Tishcoff family hasvisited New York Methodist Hospital many times.Mrs. Tishcoff continues, “I have always been madevery comfortable and very reassured by the pridethe entire staff takes in their work. The medicineis first rate, and so is the care. Dr. Destefanoalways refers us to other physicians at NYM andconfers with them throughout our stay. Wealways feel like we have a team looking after us,and that is very comforting and reassuring.“Dr. Gudavalli, Dr. Destefano, Dr. Schifterand other NYM physicians and staff understandus as a family, and consider family needs anddynamics in treating us. Adding this dimensionto treatment of our medical issues has helped usthrough numerous difficult times.”care15
