SymposiumWorking Jung’s Thought: 1900 – 2011James Hillman, PhDJune 24 – 25, 201124.6., 08.05 - 09.50 pm25.6., 10.05 - 11.50 am25.6., 02.05 - 03.50 pmBiographyHillman was born on April 12, 1926, in Atlantic City, New Jersey. He identifies himselfas Jewish and European in ancestry. He served in the US Navy Hospital Corps from1944-1946, after which he attended the Sorbonne in Paris and Trinity College,Dublin, graduating in 1950. In 1959, he received his PhD from the University ofZurich, as well as his analyst's diploma from the C.G. Jung Institute Zurich and wasthen appointed as Director of Studies at the institute, a position he held until 1969. In1970, Hillman became editor of Spring Publications, a publishing company devotedto advancing Archetypal Psychology as well as publishing books on mythology, philosophy and art. His magnum opus, Re-visioning Psychology, was written in 1975

and nominated for the Pulitzer Prize. Hillman then helped co-found the DallasInstitute for Humanities and Culture in 1978. His 1997 book, The Soul's Code: InSearch of Character and Calling, was on The New York Times Best Seller List thatyear. His works and ideas about philosophy and psychology have also beenpopularized by other authors such as Thomas Moore. His published works, essays, manuscripts, research notes, and correspondence (through 1999) reside at OPUSArchives and Research Center, located on the campuses of Pacifica GraduateInstitute in Carpinteria, California.Archetypal PsychologyArchetypal psychology is a polytheistic psychology, in that it attempts to recognizethe myriad fantasies and myths (gods, goddesses, demigods, mortals and animals)that shape and are shaped by our psychological lives. The ego is but onepsychological fantasy within an assemblage of fantasies. It is part of the Jungianpsychology tradition and related to Jung's original Analytical psychology but is also aradical departure from it in some respects.Whereas Jung's psychology focused on the Self, its dynamics and its constellations(ego, anima, animus, shadow), Hillman's Archetypal psychology relativizes anddeliteralizes the ego and focuses on psyche, or soul, and the archai, the deepestpatterns of psychic functioning, „the fundamental fantasies that animate all life“(Moore, in Hillman, 1991).Psyche or SoulHillmann has been critical of the 20 th century's psychologies (e.g. biologicalpsychology, behaviorism, cognitive psychology) that have adopted a natural scientificphilosophy and praxis. Main criticisms include that they are reductive, materialistic, and literal; they are psychologies without psyche, without soul. Accordingly, Hillman'soeuvre has been an attempt to restore psyche to what he believes to be „its properplace“ in psychology. Hillman sees the soul at work in imagination, in fantasy, in mythand in metaphor. He also sees soul revealed in psychopathology, in the symptoms ofpsychological disorders.
