Spring is definitely in the air. As a company, we are transforming andblossoming into a fuller and stronger organization. We have initiated a number ofimprovement ideas. First, we have created a shared services group to better support all of oursister companies. Second, we have appointed our highest performers to lead their respectivedivisions and companies. Finally, we have positioned ourselves in the marketplace to continueour momentum and expansion. While I am very proud of our growth and performance; I am most inspired and in awe of thequality and professionalism of our people. As we continue to work at a feverish pace andcreate record setting results, we do so while maintaining our dignity, class, and humility. We havefaced both internal pressure managing the ever mounting workflow, as well as external stressgenerated by a media machine that continues to berate us with negative economic news. I keepsaying to myself, “if business is supposed to be so bad, why are we so ‘dog gone’ busy?” The realityis that you, our group, have done a magnificent effort of staying cool under pressure and havedone a first rate job. As a result, the market is rewarding us with new, exciting opportunities. These opportunities stem from the integrity and character of our individuals and of our companyas a whole. In the end, business models, philosophies, and strategies are very important;however, the principles and character of our personnel are the seeds and nourishment thatprovides our growth. Thanks to All,Mike Lockwood2

MROCindy WilliamsMRO ManagerLockwood International, Inc.Cindy Williams decides to talk about the men behind the scenes, as faras MRO/Branch support and service. The men she is referring to areThomas Baker and his crew, Will Sewell, Chris Green, Vince Perez andGilbert Rocha. Cindy explains that these guys are known for their speed, accuracy and tenacity. Day in, day out order after order is submitted andour job is to fill it quickly and correctly, which they don’t disappoint. Theyare responsible for Houston MRO, Texas City MRO, all sold goods branchtransfers, along with short sales and shipping of all. Cindy calls them partof her branch team, even though they report to Donna Wells, they areintegral to a successful MRO operation. The climate of MRO is consistentlydifferent. What I mean by that is different customers, different inspections,From row left: Chris Green, Vince Perez, Gilbert Rocha;Back row left: Thomas Baker, & Wil Sewell.different valves, different requirements. You’ve got to be ready for anything and everything, and usually all at once. This teamis cross trained and can cover each other to ensure the pace of MRO is never slowed by them. His title is TechnicalEngineer and his main purpose is to assist in all technical and design issuesinvolving our customers and our suppliers.Terry was raised in Korea until the age of 15 when he moved with his parentsand two sisters to Edmonton, Canada. In junior high Terry learned English andhad a knack for mechanics. He earned his Mechanical degree at the University ofAlberta. As all engineers do, he felt he would one day be designing for either theairline or auto industry as he studied aerodynamics and combustion in college. He first met Lockwood through Universe Machine in Canada where hewas Design Engineer for 5 years. Any customer requested modifications(cryogenic, actuation, NACE trim, etc.) went through him. He also designed andsold valve testers for Suncor, Syncrude and Shell. He left there to join FlowServe asEngineering/QA Manager for their Canada operations (control valves). Terry andhis wife decided to pursue a warmer climate, and a “warmer climate” they certainlygot when he accepted the position at Lockwood! Although he did travel some inhis previous jobs he and his wife hadn’t experienced Texas until September 2008;two weeks later Hurricane Ike hit (wasn’t that fun?). Following that he spent sometime in Canada and returned to Houston intime to experience our snowfall! (YES, Canada -Houston got maybe 1/4” dusting of snow!)just returned from his fourth trip toTerry Korea for Lockwood, this one being a monthlong stay where he conducted business with TYand Ilshin. His trips are absolutely jam packedas he handles issues and requests from variousdepartments and always has a long laundrylist of items that need to be addressed whenhe goes. When asked who he deals with at thefoundries he said “everyone”. He communicateswith everyone from the President to the guysdoing the pours. Korea is hardly in our timezone (14 hours ahead of Houston ) so he isTerry ChoiTechnical EngineerLockwood International, Inc.working long after most of us go home via phone. When not out of the country,Terry’s time is spent on employee and customer valve education and he does a lotof work with the marketing department ensuring technical accuracy and helpingthem out.7

Randy Wilson - Lockwood’s “Quarter-turn man”Randy Wilson has been with Lockwoodsince last year (technically true-he washired 12/31/08) and he has already left sometire tracks in the road. When asked what his goal at Lockwoodwas he explains that it is to build agroup who is devoted to andspecializes in quarter-turnvalves. He says that Lockwoodsigned an exclusive withTomoe for the U.S. and Canadaterritory to achieve pricingprotection. He has plans to fasttrack the TY ball valve markets, production, and design. He brings years ofvaluable experience withexpertise in valve applicationand sizing. He knows the who, what, when, where and why when it comesto valves.Randy’s career path wasn’t initially “theindustry”. I asked him how he got intovalves and he immediately shot back that hewas an “oil field brat”. His father worked forSun Oil for over thirty years as a ProductionSuperintendant in San Fernando, CA whereRandy was born. Randy eventually followed inhis father’s footsteps and worked at the samecompany for ten years doing instrumentationand project work in steam flood, includingwork on the Sun Oil Platform Henry in SantaBarbara, CA. (A platform built in 1979 forDCOR with a water depth of 173 feet and 4.3There are four general categories of valves: Quarter-turn,Multi-turn, Checks and Control.• Quarter-turn: ball, plug and butterfly• Multi-turn: gate and globe• Check: backflow prevention• Control: automated control (actuators)A quarter-turn is so named because it requires a 90 degreeturn (of the stem) to move from the fully-open to fully-closed.miles from land). From there, Randy moved to BechtelEngineering and Petroleum to work onthe Elk Hills Naval Petroleum Reserve (landsowned by the U.S. Government established inthe 1920’s to ensure naval vessels had fuel)doing constructionproject work.In 1989 he leftCalifornia forHouston for NorrisealControls as theirWestern RegionalManager where hecovered 13 westernstates (road warrior).rom there heF joined NorrisealGlobe Control ValveInstrumentation company. In 1994 hetransferred to Houston with the companyas their National Sales Manager. He left in1998 to join KTM Ball where he started theirdivision. In 2000 they were bought out byTYCO where he stayed until 2007 leaving asDirector of Controls for North America. When asked wherehe attendedschool, he smiles. I smiletoo, because I know whatis coming. Randy wasdrafted right out of highschool by the CaliforniaAngels. At age 18 he wasplaying firstbase forthem and hasplayed withsuch greatsas GeorgeBrett andNolan Ryan.9An injury forced him to leave the game afterfive years, and he is quick to add that he leftthat career before the astronomical earnings(Jim “Catfish” Hunter of the Oakland A’s suedto become a free agent, which started theupward spiral of earnings for ball players). So, he says he can’t endorse one school ashis Alma Mater. Wherever he played “winterball” was where he attended, and the Angelspicked up the tab.He says his “self proclaimed claim tofame” was being the first guy hit by apitch in spring training by none other thanNolan Ryan. Randy tries to keep in touch withsome of his team mates from years ago, ashe rattles off a few names (Dave Collins ofthe Milwaukee Brewers and Ronnie Jacksonhitting coach for the Boston Red Sox); “theyare mostly managers and coaches now.”Randy has met “The Greats”... Willie Mays,Mickey Mantle, Ernie Banks, and Roger Maris.(It’s an honor to even type those names forme). We welcome Randy to Lockwood andyou know who to call when you needa good “Quarter-turn man”.Randy Wilson #17California Angels

LOCKWOOD S I N G A P O R E V A LV E SThe Singapore branch started with a bang, becoming registeredlocally in August 08, securing the first local Project (REC) inSeptember and moved into the warehouse in October. From apersonnel perspective Karnan Palanivel and Aziz Abdul both startedin the warehouse in November and hit the ground running. I have been experimenting with differentsoftware programs that allows me to train multiple branches at one time,(which eliminates travel costs), and I do believe we found a winner! We had 5 branches working together at one time, in one virtual location. We were able to share the AS400 to work on various tasks and we couldsee each other and interact as if sitting in one room. The ladies had greatquestions and were able to give input to help the others with their day-todayjobs. They were also able to take over the keyboard and mouse controlwithin the AS400 environment to do hands-on training, while the other“participants” could sit and watch.10I would like to personally thank the following people and branches fortheir patience and help throughout this process. They are all team playersand have been a great support in helping us work this out.(In branch number order:)(3)Sarnia = Ruth Bowling; (7)Chicago = Staci Hanner; (9)California = JulyMajlong; (10)Charlotte = Cherlyn Tumlin; and (14)Montreal = VanessaRusso.March 23 I will begin using these tools to train our Singapore branch. Ibelieve these tools can be used in a number of beneficial ways, includinginner branch communications and eventually possibly with our customers.Again, thank you ladies! You’re awesome!

Tomoe benefittedfrom the massive industrialgrowth of the Japaneseeconomy in the 1960’s and1970’s, were the companytripled in size in a very shortspace of time. Tomoe thenexpanded into the Europeanmarket in 1985 opening uptheir European headquarters inNewport (UK), were they nowemploy over 80 people. In 1997 Tomoe made a $20minvestment in opening up anew manufacturing location inNewport to make the Tomoerange of Triple Offset Valves. This operation has grownsteadily and the UK operationhave now produced over12,000 triple offset valves insize ranges from 2” thru 72” inpressure classes from ANSI150 to 2500 # and in materialgrades from cast carbon steelright through to titanium bodiedvalves. The valve design is uniquein so much as it is fully fieldmaintainable, and has wonthe respect and trust of nearlyall the major Oil and Gasend users in the World today.Tomoe also developed anaward winning “double blockand bleed’ valve in 2002, thatwas voted the most innovativevalve product of the year by the Institute of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) in 2003.In 2004 Tomoe made a further multi million dollar investment in a state of the art brand new production facility in Batam (Indonesia) where they have goneon to develop a ‘second generation’ of triple offset valves known as the “TT2” this second generation of valves have all the same features and benefitsof the first, in terms of the valves field maintainability... The TT2 product line and the new production facility in Batam has been set up for high volumeproduction of triple offset valves, and has helped Tomoe to become a competitive source in the volume end of the global triple offset market, current salesare expanding rapidly as triple offset valve demand is growing at an incredible pace Worldwide... In 2005 Tomoe opened up regional offices in the UAE togrow their market share in the Middle East, and now have operations in both Abu Dhabi and Dubai. In 2006 Tomoe decided that it was time to expand into the USA, and although Tomoe had built up a reasonable market share in North America over theyears, it could not claim to be a truly ‘global’ player without a presence over here. Early in 2007 Tomoe opened up a new operation in Houston, andtransferred Rob Fishbourne from the operation in the UK, to set up and manage the operation here in the USA.... Today Tomoe employs around 350 peopleglobally.RRA big Thank You for all help and contributions.
