PIED1200 Contemporary Development Issues20 credits semester 2Aims and Objectives of the ModuleIn this module we will look at developmentissues using the Millennium Development Goals(MDGs), which form the major currentinternational development agenda, as a steppingstone. Contemporary issues such as conflict,disease, hunger, education, and environmentalsustainability will be discussed from adevelopment perspective. Concepts such aspoverty, famine, trade justice, debt, gender, andhuman security are introduced and used ascritical tools to assess major challenges todevelopment in general, and the MDG agenda inparticular. Lectures are provided by experts inthe respective subject areas.
