them, “until the very end of Youm al-Qiyāmah, the worst possiblepunishment”:‏﴿وإ ِذ ْ تأ َذ َّن َ ربك ل َيبعث َن عل َيه ِم إ ِل َى يوم ِ ال ْقيامة من يسومهم سوءَ‏ ال ْعذ َا ِبإ ِن َّ ربك ل َسر ِيع ال ْعق َاب ِ وإ ِنه ل َغف ُور رحيم‏﴾‏“And lo! Thy Lord-God made it known that He would most certainlyraise against them (i.e. the Israelite people), up to the Day of Qiyāmah,those who would afflict them with the worst possible punishment: verily,your Lord-God is swift in punishment - yet verily He is (also) muchforgiving,a dispenser of grace.”(Qur’ān, al-A‘rāf, 7:167)Other than Gog and Magog, there can be no other people sodivinely raised, whose mission of inflicting punishment on theIsraelite people would continue up to the Day of Qiyāmah.The Sā‘ah or Last Hour is a period of time with a beginningand an end between which, a series of events would occur thatwould result in the end of the historical process, i.e. history as weknow it would end. That end of history, which precedes the end ofthe world would witness the dramatic culmination of the strugglebetween ‘truth’ and ‘falsehood’ in the historical process with finaland conclusive victory for ‘truth’ over all its rivals. The Sā‘ahwould then conclude with ‘the end of the material universe’ as weknow it when the mountains would become the equivalent ofpieces of wool that are blown hither and thither and the dead areresurrected from their graves. The Qur’ān has warned mankindthat the event which would result in the end of the materialuniverse would be something truly awesome:103
