Photos by Jim ForbesWhen I learned single-needle<strong>right</strong>-<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>gle <strong>weave</strong>, I fell inlove <str<strong>on</strong>g>with</str<strong>on</strong>g> the technique. Imade lots of grids <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>dsquares, weaving embellishing beadsinto the spaces <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d creating m<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>y kindsof jewelry. However, I beg<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> to think thesquares were a little blocky, <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d my eyewas craving some <str<strong>on</strong>g>new</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>gle. Trying tosleep <strong>on</strong>e night, all I could think of wastri<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>gles. As a veter<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> quiltmaker, I’dhad m<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>y hours of enjoyment piecingtri<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>gles into beautiful patterns. Buthow to tr<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>slate them into beadwork? Then the image came to me – buglebeads. I could use three bugle beads tobuild <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> equilateral tri<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>gle. Equilateraltri<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>gles, <str<strong>on</strong>g>with</str<strong>on</strong>g> their 60° <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>gles, wouldfit together nicely to create a smoothfabric. I lay in the dark, working out thethread path until I just couldn’t st<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d it<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>y more. At 2:00 a.m., I went downstairs<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d worked it up.The tri<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>gles chained nicely into astraight even row. Knowing I could dothis <str<strong>on</strong>g>new</str<strong>on</strong>g> technique, I almost went backto bed. “Well,” I thought, “I’ll just startthe sec<strong>on</strong>d row so I c<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> see how it willlook.” Wow! That’s when the hexag<strong>on</strong>sappeared. Like <strong>right</strong>-<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>gle <strong>weave</strong>, thisstitch c<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> be worked flat or tubular. Also, because tri<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>gles are str<strong>on</strong>g, thepossibility of working this stitch intothree-dimensi<strong>on</strong>al forms is exciting.stepbystepThe pouch’s body is worked in tubulartri<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>gle <strong>weave</strong>, <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d the flap in flat tri<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>gle<strong>weave</strong>. I used size 150 seed beads <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>dsize 2 bugles. If you use size 110 seedbeads, reinforce each tri<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>gle by goingthrough it again. This helps keep thetensi<strong>on</strong> even, something that c<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g> be difficult<str<strong>on</strong>g>with</str<strong>on</strong>g> tri<str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>gle <strong>weave</strong>. The <str<strong>on</strong>g>purse</str<strong>on</strong>g> willbe slightly larger <str<strong>on</strong>g>an</str<strong>on</strong>g>d less flexible <str<strong>on</strong>g>with</str<strong>on</strong>g>size 110 seed beads (photo, top <strong>right</strong>).pouch bodyThread a needle <str<strong>on</strong>g>with</str<strong>on</strong>g> 3 yd.
