National Insurance SchemeCont’dHOW TO CONTRIBUTEIndividual <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Diaspora can contribute to <strong>the</strong> National Insurance Scheme as:(a) A Self Employed PersonOwns and operates b<strong>us</strong><strong>in</strong>ess <strong>in</strong> Jamaica.Will be required to contributes five percent (5%) of net <strong>in</strong>come up to <strong>the</strong> maximum NationalInsurance Amount payable (for 2013 maximum is Seventy five Tho<strong>us</strong>and ($75000.00) dollars(b) A Voluntary contributorIndividuals who are nei<strong>the</strong>r self employed nor employed <strong>in</strong> Jamaica, and have relocated to ano<strong>the</strong>rcountry that does not have a reciprocal agreement with Jamaica.To be a voluntary contributor <strong>the</strong>se <strong>in</strong>dividual should have worked <strong>in</strong> Jamaica and have a m<strong>in</strong>imumof one hundred and fifty six (156) contributions. The contribution for a voluntary contributor is Onehundred Dollars per week.NIS BENEFITS AND HOW TO CLAIMA number of benefits are adm<strong>in</strong>istered by <strong>the</strong> National Insurance Scheme. In order to qualify , an<strong>in</strong>dividual m<strong>us</strong>t meet <strong>the</strong> required qualify<strong>in</strong>g conditions. The benefits are payable <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> form ofgrants or pension and it may be long term or short term. The benefit may be paid locally oroverseas. Some of <strong>the</strong> payable benefits <strong>in</strong>clude;‣ Old Age pension (Retirement Pension)The contributor on atta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> def<strong>in</strong>ed retirement age and has satisfied <strong>the</strong> qualify<strong>in</strong>gconditions. The benefit is payable for life.‣ Invalidity BenefitThis benefit is payable to a contributor who has satisfied <strong>the</strong> contribution condition and hasbeen diagnosed with a permanent medical condition that renders him/her <strong>in</strong>capable of work fora period of at least Twenty Six (26) weeks.
