<strong>Parks</strong> & Recreation CommissionAugust 27, 2007 Meeting<strong>Parks</strong> <strong>Report</strong> – <strong>Consent</strong> <strong>Calendar</strong>, <strong>Item</strong> <strong>#3</strong>_To: Dan Gentry, <strong>Parks</strong> & Recreation DirectorFrom: George Ahlgren, Park SuperintendentSubject: <strong>Parks</strong> Division Maintenance <strong>Report</strong>Since the last report, the maintenance staff has been involved with the following items:1. I have continued to work on the rebuilding of the play equipment at JohnFerns Park. Please see the update under a separate Communication.2. I spent a couple of long days reviewing the plans for the Sports Park in aneffort to get the plans into bidding condition.3. As the Sports Park project gets underway, we anticipate the constructionmanagement team to occupy the house that sits on our property to the east ofthe Community Center. The park staff and the facility maintenance staff areworking to clean up the inside and outside of this to get it ready for BlackburnConsulting. I will also be working with our City Storeroom to acquire somesurplus furniture for the construction management team when they move in.4. I am the staff contact person to keep up on all warranty issues related to thenew Community and Senior Center. And while the building continues to be abeautiful functional building, there are literally dozens of warranty issues thatcome up each month on a project of this size. To date, the contractor has beenvery responsive in addressing each of these issues.5. The renovation of Southland Park’s turf and irrigation system has started and Ihave been meeting with the contractor and Park Planner on a regular basis toget this project going. The park has been fenced and the grass sprayed with anherbicide. The new water tap has been made and rough electrical conduit hasbeen placed in the pump room of the pool (which serves as the power sourcefor the controller and boost pump). Trenching will begin this week along withexcavation for the areas that will receive decomposed granite. The park islikely to remain fenced until after the first of next year to allow the grass tobecome established and to allow the contractor to complete his maintenanceperiod.1

6. I hope everyone was able to visit the Yolo County Fair this past week and stopby the City’s booth. While I had little responsibility for setting up the Citybooth, I did arrange for and set up the landscape plant material for the booth.I also took one shift on Saturday evening as a staff person in the booth toanswer any questions the public had on the City’s storm drainage plans andfees. I also used my computer controlled lighting program for our ballfieldlights and had the field lighting at Buchignani Field come on/off during thefair days for traffic circulation and safety.7. The large trellis in front of the tennis courts at Beamer Park is being repaintedthis month. Also at Beamer, the area under the large oak trees willreceive a new layer of bark mulch to help keep weeds down and to improvethe environment around the root zones of these magnificent trees.8. Irrigation breaks have continued to plague the staff at various parks includinganother main line break at Crawford Park and two main line breaks atWoodside Park. At each occasion, the park watering system had to be shutdown for repairs, and then we try to catch up afterwards with extra wateringcycles.9. A community work day was held at Joseph Schneider Park this past monthwith folks from Bayside Church. They did a great job of helping us movenearly 100 yards of playground bark into the play area, raked leaves, andremoved weeds. The park looked a lot better when they were done and theplayground was a lot safer. Thanks to Bayside Church for the help!10. Park staff took another trip to Camp Packer Creek this past month andfinished up with the removal and chipping of several dead trees throughout thecamp.11. Playground woodchips were also delivered and installed at Traynham Parkand Klenhard Park.12. We finished up a series of swim meets at the Brooks Swim Center this pastmonth and now we get a break until fall. The maintenance staff did a greatjob at keeping the pool, deck and buildings in good shape for these hugeevents, and our new Pool Technician got broken in, too!2

13. Brooks Community Swim Center will close this month for its annualmaintenance period. It will re-open on Monday September 24 th . During theclosure staff will get a chance to patch and fill cracks in the pool shell, replaceunderwater lights, and paint the locker/shower rooms.14. The work at the <strong>Woodland</strong> Cemetery continues with grading and levelingheadstones in preparation of the first delivery of sod. A huge section alongthe south side is now ready and the crews have moved into the veteran’s areaalong Cross Street next.15. Our own local <strong>Woodland</strong> Soccer Club hosted a large soccer tournament thispast weekend at David Douglass Park, Pioneer High School and the new<strong>Woodland</strong> Health care Field at the Community Center. The organizers did agreat job of promoting our fields and our City and had over 30 teamsparticipating from as far away as Menlo Park. The new synthetic field was abig hit and the club did a great job of cleaning up after such a large crowd.16. I met last week with representatives from each of the local soccerorganizations to schedule their use of the new synthetic field (<strong>Woodland</strong>Healthcare Field). The groups were very cordial with each other and clearlyhad the promoting of soccer in their minds. The new field becomesexclusively a soccer facility over winter from September 9 , 2007 throughFebruary 29, 2008, and at this time, nearly every day is booked!17. The maintenance and storage building at Clark Field is receiving a muchneeded coat of paint. After we re-roofed the building this spring the staff gotbusy with baseball and couldn’t make time for the painting. The past fewweeks we’ve had a break at Clark Field before the fall programs begin, sowe’re taking advantage of this break.18. We continue to pump groundwater from beneath Dubach Park on a dailybasis. A few weeks ago when we had to shut the pipeline down for repairs, the groundwater came back up into the outfield within three days of havingthe pumps off.3
