One of these days I’m going to do it - I’m
going to get this wee beastie “put to bed”
at least a couple of days before it has to go
to the printers. That’s the problem though,
I just love the sound of deadlines whizzing
passed.
Methinks that, despite all the effing &
blinding that Sue has had to put up with,
this issue contains something of interest to
you, dear breeder.
*******************
Delighted that Rosemary & John Smith of
Sunnyvale Alpacas have found their slice
of heaven, albeit out of the region. At first
I thought the were heading off to cheese
country, but it turned out to be Bigga, not
Bega!
Many thanks to them both for their efforts
over the years, both in the roles of FLO
and Treasurer. Good luck, and keep in
touch.
*******************
Next time you feel depressed because your
mums don’t seem able to get the plumbing
right or it only seems to rain on the eve of
a show, spare a thought for new breeder
Barbara Hyatt of Hyatt Alpacas. I won’t
go into all the details, but when it comes to
bad luck, she’s had it in spades. Hopefully
the future holds a lot more promise.
*******************
Spits & Pieces
From The Editor
*******************
The silly season has crept up upon us
again, and it’s all hands to the wheel to
ensure that the H-BM shows go to our
usual standard. I know what you’re
thinking, if only I had more time, I’d love
to do my share.
Don’t despair - you can always replace
your physical efforts with fund-raising.
Get out there and sell some raffle tickets!
*******************
I think it’s time to get down off my soap
box. Before I go, a big cheer for Alice
Dryburgh of Sayantsi Alpacas. She
entered alpaca craft exhibits at the
recent shows at both Rylstone and Sofala
and walked away with broad ribbons. A
great effort.
Why Is It Now Called Teepee?

Spits & Pieces
So now you know …………...Ed
Diane: I grew up in Arncliffe in the inner
suburbs of Sydney on one of the few small
acreages around with my Dutch parents
who ran the renowned “Shetland
Ponyland Express” and also a Ju-Jitsu
(self defence) School.
After leaving high school I have tried
many avenues in life, gaining experience in
several positions such as, a Salesperson for
a Saddlery called JP Talty’s in the City, a
Retail Manageress for Hallmark Cards &
Gifts, a Floor Supervisor for Peppers
Fairmont Resort at Leura, Accounts
Receivable in a automotive company, and
Spits & Pieces
Introducing..............................Diane & Daniel McAusland
You may have noticed, we’ve got a few new bodies on the Committee or in special
roles. Some are new to the region, others are new to the industry. Over the next
few issues I’ll be asking them to provide brief biographies so that we can all get to
know them better.
In this issue we meet Diane & Daniel McAusland who, despite being newcomers,
have taken on the task of organizing this year’s Alpaca Fiesta & Auction.
now for the last 7 years a Publishing Hand
for Nationwide News at Chullora.
I had seen alpacas quite some years ago at
Penrith Panthers, and fell in love with the
inquisitive and beautiful animals, but at
that stage in my life they were financially
unaffordable.
Daniel: I grew up in the Macarthur
district in the south west of Sydney where
I was surrounded by grazing cows in the
distance until what I call, “Legoland” was
established and formed what is now
suburbia.
(Continued on page 9)

Spits & Pieces
(Continued from page 8) After a couple of months of a lot of
After my schooling I have also tried many
avenues in life and have gained experience,
in the RAN specialising in Mine Warfare
and travelling around the coastal waters of
Australia, as a Structural Steel Estimator
for Tubemakers/BHP at Regents Park, as a
Arborist/Horticulturist Tradesman for
various private and government bodies, as a
Stores Coordinator for Nationwide News at
Chullora (where Diane & myself met
approximately 5 years ago), and now
recently as the Perpetual
Stocktaker/Inventory Controller for
Vinidex at Smithfield.
Growing up in a semi rural environment I
have always been interested in looking for a
new rural industry to break into, as opposed
to the traditional farming of sheep and
cattle, where I stumbled across alpacas.
However, like Diane, due to financial
reasons alpacas have been a little out of my
reach until now.
In 2004 Diane and myself ventured to the
Easter Show where we stumbled across the
Alpaca pavilion. There we met Jillian
Nicholas of Belgrave Park Alpacas.
We got talking for hours and were amazed
to find out that the price of alpacas were
now a lot more affordable. After much
discussion Jill invited us out to her property
at Hartley. She also mentioned to us about
the up and coming New Breeders’ Seminar,
and also the Alpaca Production Course run
through Richmond TAFE, which we were
now quite keen to sign up for.
talking and decision making between
ourselves, Diane & myself ventured out
to Hartley to visit Jill, and wouldn’t you
know it, we left there having purchased
5 female huacayas, with 3 being
pregnant. We left all there on agistment
until we could find a place to
accommodate Diane and myself and our
newly formed family, the alpacas. From
that day we have never looked back!
Later that year in October I proposed to
Diane for her hand in marriage on a hot
air balloon ride travelling over Camden,
and of course she said yes. We married
in May 2005 at Gledswood Homestead
and Winery at Catherine Fields.
It wasn’t long though before we were
missing our animals and had to bring
them home, and funny enough when
Diane & myself went out to pick up our
herd of 5 from Jill, we left there with a
float filled with 8, an addition of 3 males.
Since then our herd has slowly grown,
having 3 healthy crias and good odds of
2 female and 1 male. By the end of 2006
we should have another 5 cria due to be
born, all female of course!
In late 2005 Diane & myself were asked
to come along to the H-BM Regions
Annual committee meeting to familiarise
ourselves with other breeders in the
region. Amongst our enthusiasm we
eagerly volunteered ourselves as new
committee members for the region, but
never dreamt though on our first night
of being lumbered the huge task of
organising the 2006 Fiesta and
Auction!!!
However, after our initial shock we have
taken hold of this task with both hands and
endeavour the event to be quite a successful
one for the H-BM Region.
Being still only relatively new to the
Australian Alpaca industry though, Diane &
myself already believe that all breeders need
to continue to keep taking part in promoting
our alpacas that we all love so much if this
industry is to thrive, and letting other people
like ourselves realise that it is not only a
dream to own a alpaca, but they can make it a
reality.
Thanks to Diane & Daniel for finding
the time in their busy schedules to put
quill to parchment.
In our next issue we’ll hear from our
new Treasurer, Veronica Graham.

The 3P’s of Showmanship …………...
As the 2006 season kicks-off it seems timely to revisit the fundamentals of
“showmanship.” The following article was written by retired judge Irene Allston and first
appeared in the Spring 2005 issue of Spitting Image. Our thanks to the author and the
Tasmanian Region for their permission to reprint the article. Ed
• Presentation
• Preparation
• Patience
Showmanship refers essentially to how well you present your animal to the judge in the
show ring.
It includes how well you can get your animal to do what you want it to.
It also includes good sportsmanship and common courtesy to the others in the ring.
However, the key to doing a good job of showing your animal at a show is how much
work you do ahead of time.
You cannot teach an animal to be a perfect show individual in one day and you must
realize that the animal may not show the same two days in a row. It may take many
hours of patient effort to get the job well done.
Before discussing how much you should show your animals, there are a number of
things which should be done beforehand.
1. The feet should be kept well trimmed, with the last trimming no later than a
week before the show. A sore-footed animal does not look good in the show
ring.
2. Practice showing your animals, starting at least six weeks ahead of the event.
To do a good job of showing, exhibitors should be well acquainted with the
animal and it should be well acquainted with the holder. Have one of the
members of your family act as a judge so you will gain practice and your
animal will know what to expect.
3. Before the event, study the show ring and see if it is level. If there are any
low spots or high spots, keep this in mind you enter the ring for your class.

Spits & Pieces
………….. for Young and Old Exhibitors
Now let’s talk about the show day and some suggestions that may be helpful to you in
showing your animal.
• Be clean and neat and wear appropriate clothing. This goes a long way in
making a favourable impression.
• When moving into the show ring, remember what you have learned
previously about the surface of the ring.
• Whenever you move your animal into the show ring or during the show be
sure to keep it between you and the judge. The judge cannot give your
animal a fair appraisal if you are blocking the view.
• Be sure to know where the judge is at all times. However, don’t watch so
closely that you forget about your animal. Concentrate on what you are
doing and what is going on in the ring, not who is alongside or sitting in the
stands.
• Be confident and efficient in your movements in the show ring or, in other
words, know what you are doing. You will also accomplish more by working
slowly and patiently than by being unpleasant to your animal.
• Don’t over show. In other words, show the animal, not yourself.
• Be alert for directions or signals that the judge or ring steward may give.
• Be courteous at all times to your fellow exhibitors, the judge and the people
along ringside. Sportsmanship is very important, so be a good winner as well
as a good loser.
• Pay attention when a judge gives his/her reasons, so you will know what to
improve on next year.
• If a judge does not give reasons, feel free at the end of the show to ask what
he or she thought of your animal.
• Do not argue with a judge about where you were placed in the class. You
may not agree but be courteous enough to respect their decision. After all,
there can only be one first place in each class and judging is simply one
person’s opinion on a given day.
• Do not forget your animal after the class is over. Remember that the true
exhibitor is one who takes pride in his or her work and animals all the time,
not just in the show ring.
When I’m Not With My Alpacas I ………...
I know it’s hard to imagine, but some alpaca breeders do find time for other things away
from the showring. The following profile of H-BM member Warwick Fuller who, together
with wife Wendy, run Moonlight Alpacas.
Forty odd years ago, I left school at fifteen
after completing my intermediate
certificate, to take up an apprenticeship. A
couple of suburbs away Wendy was a clerk
with a department store. When Wendy and
I were both sixteen,
her cousin, who was a
mate of mine, had a
party. “The Lion
Sleeps Tonight” blared
out on a portable
record player, my
Brylcreamed hair
defied gravity, and
Wendy was the most
beautiful girl at the
party.
We married at twentyone
and after four
years saving by living
in a caravan at
Wendy’s parents, built
a modest house at Emu Plains on land we
were paying off. I sold my dear little trail
bike for turf to cover the mud we called our
front yard. An act that has come to
symbolise one of the distinct and inevitable
phases in one’s life. Our son Shannon
debuted in 1974 with Cristie following in
1976.
I was a full time painter and Wendy was
a full time mum. It was a real squeeze for
a lot of years. Being an outdoor painter I
was away a lot. Particularly the first few
years I would go painting for about four
or five days, home for
about ten or twelve and
away again. We got by
and I am lucky enough
that my art has
provided for us and
allowed whatever talent
I may have to flourish.
On a painting trip
during 1993, I
stumbled across a 25acre
patch of rough,
dry granite country for
sale. The suburban girl
must have understood
the depth of feeling that
the country boy (at
heart) had about this
place as she accepted, with little
resistance, my plea for us buy it. (With
the implication of living there one day).
Coincidently at about that time two
events occurred. I saw an advert for the
Alpaca Association, and an art gallery
that carried my work, leased a space to
(Continued on page 25)

Spits & Pieces
(Continued from page 24) of “our land”. So selfishly I convinced the
an alpaca owner who started an alpaca
products shop. They showed off a few penned
alpacas on weekends. Wendy loved them and so
we started on that knowledge quest so many of
you are joyfully familiar with.
That led us after two years, to buying one
pregnant female which we agisted along with
issue while we monitored, manipulated and
managed events to a situation where we could
make the big move. During this period Cristie
moved out to flat in the city. Shannon married
and they moved into a townhouse, returning to
the nest three years later to buy it! That suited
everyone down to the ground.
“Why Moonlight Alpacas?” Wendy asked. “I
like Little Hartley Alpacas or Megalong
Alpacas” (our 25 acres is in Megalong Place,
Little Hartley). I prefer evocative to descriptive.
Having wandered over our hills and hollows in
full moonlight, I had mystical, magical images
dancing in my mind’s eye whenever I thought
“committee” to like mine best. I liked
Cristies proffered “Megacool” but Cristie
lost interest in it and Wendy thought it
was a bit faddish.
Wendy had the last and best word on the
address for our property – “Fullers
Earth.” I built a studio and cabin, which
took the whole of 1999 and between
Christmas and New Year, we went bush.
We have been here for six hard, wonderful
years and although I am a painter, it is the
alpaca part of our lives that has dictated
most of the work on the “farm” such as
fencing, roads, pasture, water, more
fencing, shelter, sheds, etc. and some time
for minor follies such as gardens, stone
walls etc.
(Continued from page 25)
For the first six months, Wendy had the
feeling that we were on holidays and that
we would be going home soon. The
moonless nights were so black and it was
so quiet! It was hard for her to overcome
the apprehensions she had built up,
leading up to the move. But an
imperceptible change came about as she
learned to live in the new environment and
discover its joys and benefits. There is now
a feeling of being very much at home and
the thought of living in the “big smoke”
sends shivers up her spine.
A couple of years ago we bought an old
coaster motor home fitted out and with
modifications, Wendy was ready to come
on a few painting trips with me, as opposed
to the child raising years.
Two days before leaving for the
Grampians in Victoria, Wendy was
diagnosed with breast cancer! Whittling
down a very serious and long story in it’s
own right - after a lumpectomy,
chemotherapy, and radiation therapy
Wendy triumphed, physically and
psychologically. We will be ready to hit the
gypsy trail in no time.
I have just returned from the opening of
my second exhibition in London (the first
was in April 2004), which is going along
swimmingly so far. For those interested, go
to my web site:
www.warwickfuller.com
and look for Panter & Hall gallery.
Spits & Pieces
We have recently embarked on a little
programme with three other alpaca
breeders in the valley, to conduct a
series of “alpaca farm trails” which
will be a new step for us. Our few sales
have been a wrench, but we don’t have
the capacity to keep breeding if we
don’t move some on. (There will be
tears!) The knowledge we have gained
and friends we have made, on “trails”
convinces us that it will be a rewarding
and fulfilling exercise and so standing
on the shoulders of breeders in the
region, and a few outside, we can
promote our alpacas, and the industry.
If you know of anyone else with an
interesting life outside of the wonderful
world of alpacas, please let me know. Ed
The Big Heart of Keiana Lodge Alpacas
Once again Diana & Keith Rutter have
donated a female alpaca to be auctioned at
our 2006 fiesta with the total proceeds
going to Children’s Cochlear Implants, to
help improve the quality of life for
children with a hearing impairment.
Last year Diana’s charity auction animal
raised $4,000 and was shared between two
charities, Children’s Cochlear Implants
and Cystic Fibrosis NSW. This year it is
Diana’s wish to support the one
organisation with the hope that the
proceeds will be enough to provide one
child with a complete hearing implant.
Diana has had first hand experience of
hearing impaired children, as one of her
grandchildren has had an implant and
now has a vastly improved quality of life.
by
Graham Dickson
Keiana Lodge is located at Running
Stream near Mudgee in NSW on 1880
acres. Diana & Keith have been breeding
alpacas since joining the industry in 2000
and currently run a herd of
approximately 450 huacayas and 50
suris. Her passion is to breed up black
suri and huacaya types to superfine
quality. Her son Andrew who also lives
on the farm with his family assists Diana.
The H-BM Region acknowledges Diana’s
generosity and also thanks Landmark
last year and Rodwells Auctioneers this
year for foregoing their commission on
this sale thus enabling the total amount
collected to go to the charity. We also
thank Alicia Anderson who donated her
artwork costs. The Region did not charge
Every landholder wants to leave the land
in better shape than when they came to
it, not only just for the sake of it; but
also for their peace of mind and for their
heirs. One way of doing this is to
enhance the natural values of your land
by conserving and improving existing
native ecosystems and biodiversity.
There are many other sensible reasons
for nature conservation, from the simple
pleasure of having healthy natural
surroundings to the well-documented
benefits that native ecosystems bring in
terms of soil stability, water quality and
ultimately, overall land value.
But when thinking about nature
conservation the real question for many
landholders is not should I or would I,
but how can I afford to?
You may be surprised to learn that a
variety of government-funded financial
incentives are available to landholders
wanting to conserve or enhance native
ecosystems on their property. Some
important existing mechanisms are
wildlife conservation on private properties and has written
this article on the topic.
Conservation Agreements, the National
Heritage Trust and Tax and Rates Relief.
Property Vegetation Plans are voluntary
plans made under the new Native
Vegetation Act to assist landholders with
managing native vegetation. These Plans
effectively streamline the process for the
clearing of existing native vegetation and
provide opportunities for access to various
financial incentives.
Voluntary Conservation Agreements are
agreements entered into by a landholder
and the National Parks and Wildlife
Service. These agreements are specifically
aimed at preserving the present natural
and cultural values of the land. Once the
agreement is entered into it ‘runs with the
land’, meaning that it binds all successive
owners (though it is possible to terminate
the agreement). Under these agreements
funding may be available for a wide range
of purposes including the costs of entering
the agreement, fencing materials, plant
and animal surveys and stabilisation
works and specialist advice.
provides a range of support, including
funds, education and skills development
for landholders and community groups
that want to participate in nature
conservation. Two well known initiatives
are the National Landcare Program and
Lastly, tax incentives exist for
landholders willing to set aside or donate
a portion of their land for nature
conservation. These incentives relate
primarily to Income Tax and Capital
