Pastor’s PageAlumni Postgraduate ConventionI extend a warm welcome to all attendees at the 2009 Alumni PostgraduateConvention. It is a privilege to have you worship with us today! I hope thatreturning to Loma Linda will be a positive experience, filled with many warmmemories of the time you spent studying here. God bless you as you worshipwith us.DiscipleshipEvery time I read the passage, I am struck by the magnetic power of Jesus. Hereare the words from Matthew’s gospel: “As Jesus went on from there, he saw aman named Matthew sitting at the tax collector’s booth. ‘Follow me,’ he toldhim, and Matthew got up and followed him” (Matthew 9:10, TNIV). The wordsthat jump out at me are the words, Follow me. Two words. Just two words. And they changed Matthew’s life forever. No doubt, many would suggest that Matthew must have had earlier and moreextensive contact with Jesus to be able to respond so quickly. Such may be thecase. But when it was decision time—when it came time to choose whether ornot to leave behind his position and wealth—it all came down to two words. And Matthew chose to heed those words. And his life was never the same again.Jesus continues to speak those words today. In fact, he may be speaking them toyou. If you worship with us regularly, you know that here at the University Church,we have become increasingly intentional about and committed to discipleship.Discipleship might be defined at its most basic level as continually responding tothe call of Jesus, “Follow me.” Disciples respond affirmatively to that invitationevery day of our lives.Would you join Jesus—and us—in this lifelong journey?Living WisdomWe continue today with our journey through James. Today’s passage is certainlyan appropriate one for a church located at the heart of an academic institution. Itdeals with two kinds of wisdom—earthly wisdom and heavenly wisdom. I hopethat heavenly, living wisdom will be yours today.God bless you.Randy RobertsSenior Pastor
