But thrifty families have learned that going green can save them money, too. green your house For Jeanne Stevermer, this point hit home when the storms that led to the summer 2006 flooding in the Coulee Region ruined furniture that she and her husband, Doug, had stored on the porch of the rural Stoddard farmhouse they were rehabbing. The building, already several steps below the status of “fixer-upper,” now needed infusions of furnishings, too. They turned to garage sales, to consignment and other resale stores, and to retail store bargain areas. But they struck gold at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore in downtown La Crosse. “You should see the house now. People can’t believe it. And we got most of the stuff here,” says Jeanne, gesturing around the packed showroom of the ReStore, where she now volunteers. “The store has been very, very wonderful for us.” She and Doug, a carpenter, found $16 wrought-iron handrails (a $300 value, Doug says), a $25 toilet ($100 new), a $175 whirlpool tub ($800 new), a $100 granite-topped sink with an old-style waterpump faucet ($600 new) and much more at the ReStore. “Two kitchen cabinets we got here, $16 apiece,” she adds. “They came from a doctor’s office.” She has retained the medical labels for atmosphere. FamIlY Doug also got permission to remove windows, a kitchen island, door frames and woodwork from a house that was being torn down. He estimates that paint he rescued from county hazardous waste facilities and other places saved him a thousand dollars in repainting farm outbuildings. He snagged a wood-burning stove at an auction for $325; it would have been around $900 new. “Doug is a wonderful carpenter, and that certainly helps in do-ityourself projects,” Jeanne says. Jeanne and Doug weren’t new to buying used. They’d purchased hockey equipment and wrestling shoes for their son at Play It Again Sports in La Crosse when he was still at home. And Jeanne admits a continuing fondness for rummage sales and what she calls “alley shopping.” She’s been known to pick up usable castoffs in alleys and along roadsides and bring them to the ReStore. Jeanne clearly is proud of her family’s talent for reusing. “The stuff that people throw away—it’s a shame,” she says. “What were they thinking? What we throw away [as a society] is just disgusting.
