Mindy Seering attributes massage to helping relieve her migraine headaches. As an M.D. herself, Seering is more familiar than most with what traditional medicine has to offer. But where she once relied on near-daily doses of medication to relieve her tension migraine headaches, she now combines a monthly prophylactic dose with monthly massage. “Massage makes a difference,” she explains. Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), according to the National Institutes of Health Web site, is “a group of diverse medical and health care systems, practices and products that are not generally considered part of conventional medicine.” The site lists 21 varieties of CAM, including vitamins, natural products, meditation, massage, homeopathy and yoga. Nadira Haik, M.D., a Franciscan Skemp medical practitioner, prefers the term “integrative medicine,” as it implies a combination of traditional and nontraditional treatments. CAM has special appeal to women, explains Haik, because “women appreciate being seen and treated as a whole person.” Not only can it address issues specific to women, like infertility and hot flashes, she says, but it can also treat women from emotional, spiritual and physical aspects. It is person-centered, rather than aimed at a particular disease. what’s involved? “Integrative medicine combines the use of herbs, acupuncture, diet and lifestyle changes, and modern medicine to provide patients with the best of all treatments,” says Kim Dowat, CNM, HEalTHY lIVINg WOMEN’S WAYS OF HEALING Explore complementary and alternative medicine in the Coulee Region. by HEIdI gRImINgER BlaNKE Ph.D., a Gundersen Lutheran midwife and acupuncturist. In particular, Dowat approaches primary and women’s health care using acupuncture, osteopathy, herbal therapies and advice about supplements in addition to western medicine. Specialists in integrative medicine range from traditionally trained physicians, like Haik, to those who are self-taught and practice a particular treatment for themselves and their friends and families. While most integrative medicine practitioners are open to more standard treatments, there are some distinct advantages to a complementary approach. Many therapies are less invasive, less expensive and easier to administer in graduated doses or treatments. For numerous women, these procedures are perceived as more under their own control than are traditional procedures. Practitioners at area clinics are realizing the impact complementary medicine can have on a woman’s healing process and are meeting their patients’ desires to explore these approaches. Dr. Karen Keil of Keil Clinic points out that today, women “have multiple sources of information, particularly as a result of the Internet, where they can try to find options for their own health needs.” Keil and others in the Coulee Region are empowering women by offering integrative services such as the following: Herbs and acupuncture Dowat makes extensive use of herbs and acupuncture in her practice.
