PHOTOS BY MELISSA HANSON The Lazy Lizard on the tip of the island is a popular place for locals and tourists alike to catch some rays and enjoy a cold beer. To travel is to experience, enlighten and evolve, and I am a self-admitted travel junkie. I love going to new places and experiencing everything a destination has to offer, but there is one destination that feeds my soul like no other. Taking one step on the white sandy streets (yes, streets) of the Belizean island of Caye Caulker is to shake off the cares of daily life, shed the layers of stress and obligation, and emerge with an unparalleled sense of self. Belize basics The inconspicuous country of Belize is located on the Yucatán Peninsula just south of Mexico, with Guatemala to the west and the warm waters of the Caribbean Sea embracing its eastern shore. Belize’s diverse cultural makeup results from a melding of cultures including Mayans and other Central American natives as well as Europeans and the African slaves they brought with them. Formerly a British Crown Colony known as British Honduras, Belize declared independence from England less than 30 years ago, and the British mark can still be seen today. It is the only Central American country whose official language is English, and while you will encounter several other dialects (most notably Spanish and Creole), you can leave your translation book at home since English is widely spoken, especially in tourist-prone areas. TRaVEl The author’s husband shows off a large starfish that makes its home in the warm Caribbean waters. go slow on Caye Caulker Caye Caulker (pronounced kē, like its counterparts the Florida Keys) is one of several islands rimming the Belize Barrier Reef (the second largest on earth). The tropical temperatures that hover around 75°F year-round, brightly painted buildings and Reggae influences lend themselves to the island’s predominantly Caribbean vibe. Another prominent feature of the one-village island is the simple and laid-back atmosphere.
