In addition to experiencingAmerican family life, the visiting students madenumerous presentations in classes, highlighting traditionalChinese arts such as calligraphy, decorativeknot tying, music, literature and poetry. Presentationson historical events, cities, the Chinese zodiac, SpringFestival, and a tea ceremony were also shared.In addition to attending classes with our students,the Chinese visitors watched the Boys Soccer Teamwin the State Championship in Melbourne and listenedto the declamation finalists in Assembly.The visitors traveled to the U.S. through saya(Sino-American Youth Ambassadors ExchangeProgram), a program inspired by a 2009 Beijingspeech given by President Obama about Sino-American collaboration. Former Secretary General ofthe United Nations, Boutros Boutros Ghali, is theHonorary Chairman of saya.

He enjoys his mathclasses and is proud that this year he is inthe AP Calculus AB class. He knows hehas come a long way.Ahmed has a hearing disability. Hecame to America and to Tampa Prepnearly four years ago from a school in theMiddle East. This year in his art class,Mrs. Kaki King, his art teacher, gaveAhmed’s class an assignment: make a cupthat represents your personality. Ahmeddecided instead to make a tree, one thatrepresents his “transformation,” from aperson who once felt worthless to onewho believes in himself.He pointed to the branches on one sideof the tree. “I made a tree, half dead,half alive. This side, the one with thesnake coiled around a branch, symbolizesmy past life in another country. This isthe dead side. The other side, the branchesthat hold the nest and four eggs symbolizenew life for my family—my lifethat is so different now.”Because of his hearing disability, hewas treated unkindly by students inschools he attended in other countries. Hefelt worthless and incapable of achievinganything when he came to Tampa Prephis freshman year. His teachers helpedhim through a difficult adjustment period,his grades improved and he began tobelieve in himself and set goals.He writes, “I am amazed by my transformation,from what I was to who I amright now. I was able to change the scaleand most importantly I was able tochange my destiny.” Realizing that hisdisability is not an obstacle for him, henow looks ahead with hope to a future incollege. He understands that there will bechallenges.His essay ends with these words, “Iknow that college can refine my skills tohelp me not just achieve my dreams, butalso help me build new dreams for myselfin the future. I know I can do it, becauseI have done it before.”adonis rwabigwiAdonis Rwabigwi is known on campus asa basketball star. The middle child of afamily of seven children, Adonis came tothe United States from Rwanda two yearsago. Adonis has played center on the boysvarsity basketball team for the past twoyears.
