Herhusband, Jack, is an Art professor at UTwhere <strong>Tampa</strong> Prep faculty have the benefitof attending classes tuition-free.Dean of Faculty Donald Morrison wasone of Jack’s ceramics students and later,one of hers. When Morrison mentioned ajob opening at <strong>Tampa</strong> Prep, she jumpedat the chance.“This school has been wonderful,” saidKing. “I love the autonomy of what Iteach, I love the kids and my colleagues—Ihave wonderful friends here.”King is a member of the “purple”group, a contingent of faculty and friendsover age 50. They swim in the <strong>Tampa</strong>Prep pool, do yoga in the Library and gofor walks together. She said she’s going tomiss them, and her kiln.“I’m definitely going to miss my kiln,”King said, eyeing the concrete square edificeon a patio outside her classroom. Herhusband built it for her and the school.“This one is gorgeous.”King plans to continue creating art;she’ll do adjunct teaching at theUniversity of <strong>Tampa</strong> as she has the past17 years; and will keep busy traveling,gardening, being outdoors and sailing.She also wants to volunteer with hergranddaughter’s Girl Scout troop as shedid for her own daughter years ago.In looking back, she hopes her studentscome away from her classes withjust one thing—an appreciation for theVisual Arts.“From choosing a painting for theirhouse or finally framing a piece they madehere at <strong>Tampa</strong> Prep,” King said, “I hopethey’ll have art in their life in some way.”In her 16 years as a <strong>Tampa</strong> Prep teacher,Kaki King received a Grady Grant and aCouncil on International Exchange(CIEE) travel grant to China. She was therecipient of the Faculty Award selected bythe Alumni Association Board in 2011 andshe coordinated the Tree of Life projectwith visiting artists in 2012.peter shepleyby jamie amzilFollowing the lead of <strong>Tampa</strong> Prep seniorswho are writing six-word memoirson a white board wall in the student center,Associate Head of <strong>School</strong> Peterpeter shepleyvictory tour part iBorrowing inspiration from some of the classic bandsof the rock world, the Peter Shepley Victory Tour wasconceived: coast-to-coast alumni parties marking Mr.Shepley’s retirement in June. Mr. Shepley, a classichimself, and Mrs. Kennedy, Alumni Relations Director,hosted parties in Boston and Washington, D.C. inOctober, distributing coveted t-shirts to alums whoattended. The Tour t-shirts in a red and black vintagedesign seem to make everyone smile.The Tour stops next in Philadelphia, and after thatLos Angeles and New York City. A special salute to Mr.Shepley is set for April 20 on campus.
