EASTER(MEDITATION)Let the fire of Easter be the fire of Christ:The fire of justice, peace and reconciliationin our world of injustice, war and bitterness, the light of hope and couragein the shadows of agnosticism, apathy and alienation, the warmth of friendship and affectionin the shades of loneliness and aloneness and hopelessness. The Easter fire lights upall that is human within us;it touches us with the spark of love, for the spark of love is the spark of God within us:22. EASTERLord, help me remain open to new life whenAll around seems dark and dead.Share with me your risen life.23. YOM HA SHOAHThis day is set aside to remember the Jewish Holocaust in which six million Jews were systematicallykilled by the Nazis in Europe between 1933 and 1945.Lord,On this day of Yom Ha Shoah, help us to overcome all hatred and ignorance, to grow in love for one another,to grasp more fully the mystery of your godhead, and to become more perfect witnesses of your love in the sight of all people. We make our prayer to you the merciful and ever-living God.24. St Dominic's Sixth Form College19. GOOD FRIDAY(MEDITATION)Why call this day good?A day of violence and terrorism,of injustice and of torture,a day of hopelessness and despair. Why call it good? This day today reminds us of what is evil:the slaughter of the innocent, the arrogance of the powerful, the mockery of the good.Yet, it is Good Friday!Good because of God:good, because God's love has conquered.Courage, says the hero of this Friday,'I have overcome the world!'Lord, I pray this dayfor courage to endure what I cannot change, patience to suffer what I cannot understand, and love to know that my suffering, like yours,is never in vain.20. PASSOVER FESTIVALPassover, also known as Pesach, is an annual Jewish festival occurring in March or April whichcommemorates the exodus of the Israelites from Egypt. It is named from God’s passing overthe houses of the Israelites. The eight day celebration recalls the liberation of the Jews fromslavery and their deliverance to the Promised Land of Israel. The story of the Exodus is recountedand the ongoing struggle of all peoples for freedom from internal and external tyrannyis celebrated.Lord, look upon those who keep your law in faith and in sincerity of heart. At this festival of Passover, help us to grow in love for one another,to grasp more fully the mystery of your godhead, and to become more perfect witnesses of your love in the sight of all people. We make our prayer to you the merciful and ever-living God.Introduction“We do not say: ‘My Father, who art in heaven’, or ‘Give me this day my daily bread’. Each persondoes not ask for his own sins to be forgiven only, nor does he request for himself alone not to be ledinto temptation and that he be delivered from evil. Our prayer is public for all … because we are allone.”St. Cyprian (c.200-258)From One the Lord’s prayerOur mission statement says that we are “committed to the personal and spiritual growth” of ourstudents and staff. An act of daily worship can help in this spiritual growth by:Reminding us of our need to praise and thank God for what he in his love has done for usBringing together students and staff from different faith backgrounds to overcomeobstacles and barriers which may existEncouraging the values of tolerance, respect and care for one another that helps to createcommunity and overcome tensionReminding us all of what is really important and significant in our lives, and helpingstudents to develop their own personal prayer livesHelping us to focus on the needs of othersAt St Dominic’s each day begins with a prayer at the start of the 8.45 lesson. The tutorials also beginwith a prayer.Teachers can eitherUse the prayers in this book (either leading the prayer themselves or asking a student to doso)Make up their own prayers as appropriate. This is often most effective when linked tospecific current events or concerns e.g., Middle East peace process, natural disasters, etc.Ask students, if appropriate, to prepare a prayer of their ownHave a quiet period of silent reflection/personal prayerThe prayer time only needs to last a few minutes. The prayers in this book are in no particular order and there is no need to use them in order. Pick andchoose as appropriate. At the back of the book there is a section with prayers for particular seasonsor days. If you have favourite prayers you would like to see included in the next edition, please let ushave them. The Prayer Book used at St David’s Catholic Sixth Form College in Cardiff begins with the following:“ God tirelessly calls each of us to this mysterious encounter with himself and so it is fitting thatwe should respond to this call in prayer each day. St Paul reminds us of our need to continuallypray in an unceasing manner in gratitude for what God, in his love, has done for us. We cancontinually pray if we live in the presence of God, if we stay in the awareness of God’s love forus. The work that we shall do, especially in moments of led prayer, may prove to be literally ofinfinite value to our young people who are entrusted to our care. It is in this sense that our workcan find meaning and truly be called pastoral – by uniting ourselves and our work to God”.Page 32Page 1

EPIPHANYThe wise men were not wise because they wore big hats,Or held a plan of all the stars, but because they walked a thousand miles to see a child.Such a trek seems madness to educated lookers-on.But there the difference lies between the ones who look andthen the ones who see beyond.Three wise men came from the east who knew enough to knowthat things are never as they seem.In the secret of my heart, teach me wisdom.16. HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL WEEKFirst they came for the Communists and I did not speak out—because I was not a Communist. Then they came for the Socialists and I did not speak out—because I am not a Socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists and I did not speak out—because I was not a tradeunionist. Then they came for the Jews and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak out for me.Pastoral Niemoeller, in prison and concentration camp for eight and a half yearsLord, help me to speak out against injustice, hatred and racism. May I never be a bystander;but rather someone who works for a world where all are treated fairly and with respect whatevertheir race or background.17. ASH WEDNESDAYWhen I think of fasting, I think of millions who have no choice but to fast;of the millions who are thirsty not because they gave up drink, but because we seem to have given up on them.As I fast – whatever it may be – may I always rememberit is but a gesture, a gesture which reminds me that othersfast through no choice of their own, and that God is hungry in them.Lord, open my heart to all who are needy in our world of plenty.18. ST PATRICKGod our Father,You sent St Patrick as a missionary to Ireland;May we too be your missionariesShowing everyone, by our living , that youAre a God of goodness and love.Page 2Page 31

Live slowly, think slowly, for time is a mystery.Never forget that love requires always that you be the greatest person you are capableof being.Be grateful for the manifold dreams of creation and the many ways of the unnumberedpeoples.Be grateful for life as you live it and may a wonderful light always guide you on theunfolding road.Nigeria, Ben Okri71. When I am afraid, may I look on the face of God, hear the voice of God feel the compassionof God, touch the love of God. And then I have touched the mystery of God,and there is no need again to be afraid.72. St Dominic's Sixth Form College156. The most important thing about each of us is our capacity for goodness. We can be a source of light. We have hands than can care, eyes that can see, ears that can speak, feet than can walk, and above all hearts that can love.Unfortunately, through laziness, selfishness, and cowardice, our light can be dimmed, so that we become shadows of the people we could be.Lord, help us to believe in our own goodness, and to let the light of that goodness shine. On seeing this light others find their way, and you will be glorified.Amen.157. Let me be stillLord, here I am come to pray, but I keep thinking of all the things I have to do.Teach me to see that to be before you open and attentive, knowing that you are withme now, is the most important thing for me at the moment. The past and future arein your hands, but at this point of time my task is to let the whole of myself be withyou, and to accept that this is what you want of me. Let your Holy Spirit make thisclearer to me as I offer myself and my day to you.Amen.158. Teach me, my Lord, to be patient and gentle in all the events of life, in disappointments,in the harsh words of others, in the thoughtlessness of those I trusted. Letme put myself aside, to think of the happiness of others, to hide my pains and heartaches,so that I may be the only one to suffer from them. Teach me to profit by thesuffering that comes my way. Let me use it that it may mellow me, not harden norembitter me; that it may make me patient, not irritable. That it may make me broadin my forgiveness, not narrow and overbearing. May no one be less good for havingcome within my influence. No one less pure, less true, less kind, for having been afellow-traveler in our journey toward Eternal Life. Lord, as I go about my daily routinetoday, let me whisper from time to time, a word of thanks and love to you. May mylife be lived in the supernatural, full of power for good, and strong in its care andsupport of my neighbour.159. People are often unreasonable, illogical and self-centred; forgive them anyway. If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives; be kind anyway. If you are successful you will win some false friends and some true enemies; succeed anyway. If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you; be honest and frank anyway. What you spend years building, someone could destroy overnight, build anyway. If you find serenity and happiness, there may be jealousy, be happy anyway. The good you do today, people often forget tomorrow; do good anyway.Give the world the best you have and it may never be enough; give the world thebest you’ve got anyway. You see, in the final analysis, it is between you and God; it was never between youand them anyway.Mother Teresa85. Martin Luther King said “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: What are youdoing for others?” Lord God, help me this day to do something positive for someoneelse.86. God of all peoples, help us to look upon the lands devastated by war, and show usthe way of peace.Help us to want ploughs rather than guns, and bread rather than bombs.Remove hatred from the hearts of warring peoples, and cleanse our memories sothat we get rid of vengeance.Give us the wisdom and the courage and will to end terrorism and everything thatleads to it, in families, communities and countries.Help us to remember gratefully the peacemakers of all nations. Give us your helptoday to bring peace to life wherever we are.Adapted from The Prayer of the Church92. Dear Lord at the start of this new day, help us to know the difference between rightand wrong. Help us to make choices for good and give us the strength to avoid evil.93. The Lettuce. A story from Thich Nhat Hahn in “Peace is Every Step”. “When youplant lettuce, if it does not grow well, you don’t blame the lettuce. You look for reasonsit is not doing well. It may need fertilizer, or more water, or less sun. You neverblame the lettuce. Yet if we have problems with our friends or our family, we blamethe other person. But if we know how to take care of them, they will grow well, likethe lettuce. Blaming has no positive effect at all, nor does trying to persuade usingreason and arguments. That is my experience. No blame, no reasoning, no argument, just understanding. If you understand, and you show that you understand, youcan love, and the situation will change”. Lord God, give me patience, humility, toleranceand love in my dealings with others today.94. Father, the hand of your loving kindness powerfully but gently guides all the momentsof our day. Blessed is the humblest dwellingWhere God’s praises are sung.Of what use are beautiful palacesIf they turn the mind from God?We do not even feel the pinch of poverty in the company of those who rememberGod,But cursed is that vanityWhich seeks worldly things. To live by hard labour and wear rough clothesIs no obstacle to happiness when the mind is content. But what use is greatnessWithout inner peace? The man who is in tatters but is full of the love of GodGains reputation,But a life of luxury is worthlessWhen it becomes all-absorbing.Sikh prayer (Guru Arjan)135. To you, Creator God of nature and humanity, or truth and beauty, I pray:Hear my voice, for it is the voice of victims of all wars and violence amongindividuals and nations.Hear my voice, for it is the voice of all children who suffer and will suffer whenpeople put their faith in weapons and war.Hear my voice when I beg you to instil into the hearts of all human beings thewisdom of peace, the strength of justice and the joy of fellowship.Hear my voice, for I speak for the multitudes in every country and every people ofhistory who do not want war and are ready to walk the road of peace.Hear my voice and grant insight and strength so that we may always respond tohatred with love, to injustice with total dedication to justice, to need withsharing of self, to war with peace.O God, hear my voice, and grant unto the world your everlasting peace.Pope John Paul II139.
