Prison Service College, NewboldRevel was the scene of the 1994 PrisonServices National Dog Trials, and itwouldbe hard to find a more picturesque venue.Set in 200 acres of beautiful Warwickshirecountryside the college has every facilityneeded to put on a successful event suchas the championships. I mention thisbecause during 1995 your Association ishoping to arrange a service dog seminarat Newbold Revel, and you shouldn't missthe opportunity to visit this excellent collegeand share its history.Built originally as a stately home for theNewbold family it has been improved andextended over hundreds of years. In 1166the eldest daughter of the Newbold familymarried Robert Revel, when the familyname became Newbold Revel. Dogs for the Disabled Dogs for the Disabled was founded atKenilworth in 1986 by Frances Hay, a doglover who lost a leg due to cancer. Francesrealised that her own dog Kim bothinstinctively, and strengthened by training, helped her walk on uneven ground, and toclimb stairs, giving her confidence andindependence.Dogs for the Disabled is a registeredcharity which trains specially selected dogsto perform tasks which people withdisability either find very difficult orimpossible to do themselves. The dogsalso provide recipients withcompanionship , independence andsecurity, qualities found by every doghandler in his service dog.Dogs are chosen in a similar manner toservice dogs by donation from membersof the public, unwanted or abandoned26 Service Dogdogs , and dogs which have beenwithdrawn from other training programmes,a factor which should be borne in mind byservice dog sections when they have dogswhich do not seem to, be making the gradein a service dog career.A variety of tasks are taught includingopening and closing doors, retrieving acordless phone and other named articles, picking up articles dropped by accidentand activating light switches. Other morespecialised tasks are taught, for exampleone dog was recently taught to arrangespecial lifting slings around the handler sothat she can use a hoist system to getherself from her wheelchair into bed or touse the bathroom as she only has the useof one arm to help herself.Training is carried out using kind , positivemethods with titbits, verbal encouragementand physical praise. In this way the doglearns to enjoy his work and actually wantsto do it. This is very important as a severelydisabled person could not use compulsivemethods to control a dog.I am sure that all Service Dog handlerswill agree that these dogs are doing awonderful job and provide an essentialservice for disabled people, and want towish them every success for the future.Dogs forthe Disabled now has 35traineddogs at work helping people with disabilitiesand in the coming year they hope todramatically increase that number.
