In issue No 9, the British Police and
Services Canine Association presented a
first for its magazine, when Corporal Vicky
Stevenson of the RAF Police Dog Section
appeared on its cover with Air Dog, Tabre.
Vicky was the first female dog handler to
feature in our magazine , and she
continued the good work in issue No 10,
as a competitor in the 1993 RAF Police
Dog Trials becoming the first female RAF
handler to reach the final six of the
competition .
Now Corporal Sue Wilson of the RAF
Police Dog Section has continued the
good work started by Vicky by becoming
the first female handler to work as a full
time member of the RAF Police Dog
Demonstration Team. Sue was selected
for this post in February 1993 and will
complete an 18 month tour of duty,
appearing with the team at venues all
over the country.
The cover picture shows Sue with Air
Dog Duke, and above they are seen
practising a demonstration routine.
Congratulations Sue, association
members are only too aware of the hard
work which goes into producing a first
class dog demonstration team , and the
RAF Police Dog Demonstration Team
are first class ambassadors for all service
dog handlers.
Steel Fencing
Oakenden Steel Fencing are specialist manufacturers
of animal cages, compounds and housing. They
manufacture for numerous end users but specialise in
providing a range of galvanised steel kennel runs for
Boarding, Breeding and Training kennels in the UK.
The standard range of bolt together runs are suitable
for replacing timber as a stronger, longer lasting
alternative for fixing to wooden kennels or brickwork.
They come fabricated in a range of sizes on box tube
frames fully welded with rigid welded mesh or vertical
bars. The gated panels incorporate a lockable slide bolt
and the panels are hot dip galvanised after manufacture
for maximum corrosion resistance.
Since early 1993 the company has been providing a
service of fitting out vans with cages of the type used
for security dogs, Dog Wardens and animal welfare
groups. They are pleased to cater for individuals as
well as commercial organisations.
The
Maltese
Police
Dog
Section
John Giusti of the Maltese Police Dog
Section with his explosive search dog
Salko
The Maltese Police Dog Section was
established 19 years ago, initially with
only four dogs trained in criminal work. At
the same time there was another dog
section on the island which formed part of
RAF airport security - the British Forces
were still active in Malta at that time and
they offered us great support.
In 1980, drugs problems were getting
closer to the shores of the island, so a
drug dog sniffer squad was set up. Two
years later, the explosive detection team
was set up. A lot of support at this time
was given by Great Britain, Italy and
Germany, by either donating dogs or
offering us intensive training courses
abroad. Now our dog section has 13 dogs
trained in criminal work, nine drug
detection and two explosives and firearms
detection. This may seem only a few, but
you have to bear in mind that the island of
Malta is only 21 miles in length and nine
miles wide, but with a population of
337,000.
Dog handlers receive specialised
training and four Maltese dog handlers
were lucky enough to go abroad for this,
three to Germany and one to Italy. Their
training was mainly in narcotic detection
and basic obedience training. Some of
our dogs were donated by the German
Government and recently five dogs were
donated by France, and we also have
some dogs brought over from Great
Britain.
Up until now we did not have a breeding
programme, dogs were usually donated
by the public, but in a few months time we
are moving to a newly built dog section
and hopefully facilities provided will enable
us to have a breeding programme. We
use various breeds such as German
Shepherds, Labradors, Rottweilers,
Belgium Shepherds, Giant Schnauzer and
Springer Spaniels.
Daily duties consist of cleaning the
8 Service Dog
kennels first thing in the morning, grooming
the dogs and training them. Each handler
is then allocated a specific task - either
patrol or search duties. Patrols at yacht
marinas, rough pub areas and crowd
control at soccer grounds are performed
by handlers with criminal work dogs, and
they also had to cope with a minor prison
riot a few months back.
Drug dogs perform daily searches at the
airport on incoming luggage as well as
checking incoming mail at the General
Post Office. They carry out searches at
private homes and other premises or upon
suspects arrested by the Vice Squad. We
have had some successful drug finds at
the airport as well as other incidents.
I handle an explosive and firearm
detection dog and perform random
searches on departing luggage at the
airport before it is loaded onto the planes.
We handle any bomb threats-luckily, up
until now they have all been hoaxes, and
recently I had to organise a search for
arms after a brutal shoot-out. When Malta
is visited by VIPs it is up to these dogs to
check out each and every place for
explosives. You can imagine how hectic
this can be with only two dogs available!
Our thanks to John Giusti of the Maltese
Police Dog Section for his interesting
article.
Whoops
Apologies!
The title of page 13 in the last issue of
'The Service Dog' was 'Paws for
thought' what a pity I didn't do what
the title suggested.
Still it was very appropriate that I
chose page 13 for my deliberate
mistake. Now be honest, hands up,
who spotted it? I bet you didn't.
Certainly John Ruston and Dereck
Coupland did, and they have already
received my apologies. In this issue I
publish the photograph which caused
the confusion.
To say that Mike Bishop is a dedicated
dog badge and pin collection would, I
believe, be the understatement of the
year - a fanatical collector would be a
better description. Mike is a dog handler
and trainer with the Fairfax County Police
Department in Virginia.
A member of the USPCA he has been
a police officer for 15 years and a dog
handler for seven.
His hobby is collecting insignia and
emblems worn by service dog units
throughout the world, and at the present
moment he has 1,300 individual pieces
displayed representing 25 different
countries.
His badges and pins are mounted in
frames which he displays at shows to
help promote service dogs.
Badge and pin collecting is becoming
very popular among dog handlers and on
the members page you will see a section
for members who wish to exchange
material with other collectors.
Sorry lads - will the real Dereck
Coupland and John Ruston please
BOOK REVIW
Praising the unsung
heroes
'deeply moved by
handlers' stories of
canine bravery'
Retired national newspaper journalist,
Edward Vale is writing a book about the
courage of police dogs, a book I believe
long overdue.
He tells me that he is astonished and
deeply moved by handlers' stories of
canine bravery, not to mention the heroism
of the handlers themselves.
cd Will not divulge the title, but says that
the book points up lawbreakers who
believe they can buck the odds, the yobs
who put the boot in or lash out with iron
bars, and the gun and machete ghouls
whose evil is boundless, who care not a
jot about the damage their ferocity wreaks.
But they reckon without a police dog's
courage and his handier's devotion to
duty.
Of necessity, many of his stories are
most touching. To relieve this and to
show another side to police dog work, he
plans a final chapter on lighter moments
- bitten Bobbies' bums and the like - any
incident that raises a smile.
If you have such a tale, send it or get in
touch with me and I will arrange for the
contact to be passed on. Fine detail is not
needed.
Now come on you budding authors,
here is a chance to get your stories down
in print with a professional - stories from
a book which I know we will get the
chance to star in our magazine.
Beyond the call of duty
Hero dog
'gave his life
for the job'
The brave police dog shot when he tackled
a gunman was put down on Thursday 14
October 1993.
His handler, Police Constable Bob Smith
of the Devon and Cornwall Constabulary
was by his side when six year old Kain
was put to sleep at a vet's surgery. Earlier
he had undergone an emergency
operation to remove a bullet lodged in his
body.
The animal had received a bravery award
for tackling a knifeman at a presentation
only 24 hours before he tried to disarm Ian
Fitzgerald-Hay on his farm near Totnes,
South Devon on Wednesday 13 October
1993. In the attack he suffered multiple
fractures of the front leg and was also hit
in the shoulder.
Bob, his hal)dler made the agonising
decision to have Kain destroyed because
the leg injuries were so serious he could
never have enjoyed a decent life.
Sergeant Ralph Blackburn of the dog
section at Newton Abbot said , 'Bob is
distraught. Kain was one of the family.
It was the hardest decision of his life, but
he had to put Kain 's quality of life before
his own emotions.
Kain had worked for four years and
proved himself a fearless companion .
There was no way we were going to allow
him to exist as a cripple - that would have
been too cruel. Kain gave his life for the
job and will be sorely missed.'
Kain was shot trying to disarm Mr
Police Constable Bob Smith and Kain,
'a fearless companion'
Fitzgerald-Hay after he threatened armed
police surrounding his farm at Diptford.
He was armed with a rifle and a pistol.
After the shots were fired marksmen
killed Mr Fitzgerald-Hay because they
feared their lives were in peril.
The members of the British Police and
Services Canine Association send their
condolences to Bob and his family on the
loss of a faithful family friend and partner.
We have just learnt that Bob has trained
a new dog, a 14 month old GSD named
Max and was back patrolling the streets
in the first week of April. Well done Bob,
welcome back.
Arden Grange
INTERNATIONAL QUARANTINE KENNELS
Situated in a beautiful part of Sussex, Arden Grange offers
the most outstanding, ultra modern quarantine kennels in the
British Isles, and far exceeds the standards laid down by the
Ministry of Agriculture . The kennels vary in size from 5'8" x
6'9" for small and medium dogs to 7'8" x 6'9" for large dogs.
The kennels have built-in beds and are heated; they have
individual runs which are over 16 feet in length and dogs can
come and go from the kennel to their run as they wish, the
runs being covered to give protection from extreme weather
conditions. The runs either overlook garden areas or fields,
thus giving the dogs access to plenty of fresh air and the
opportunity to see the day-to-day activities around the
kennels. All the quarantine buildings are fitted with fire alarms,
burglar alarms and CCTV for your dogs' security and your
peace of mind.
Upon arrival, all pets are met by their allotted kennelmaid,
who will treat them as one of her own during the 6 month stay
in our kennels. All the staff at Arden Grange are highly skilled,
especially selected for their love and devotion to animals.
Regular grooming is also part of our care.
The kennels are visited six days a week by the veterinary
superintendant and each animal receives a thorough
inspection on arrival here. We have a fully equipped modern
surgery and anaesthetic facilities should any operation
become necessary while your pet is with us.
Arden Grange is an approved carrying agent and will be
happy to transport your pet from the port or airport of arrival to
our kennels. We are able to supply travelling boxes when
collecting from the ports.
By Dawn's Early Light
I hate earlies. Whether you call it first
watch , morning shift or early turn . I still
hate them. It's simply not natural to get
out of a warm bed before five o'clock in
the morning only to blunder about in the
bathroom, praying you don't cut yourself
shaving and bleed all over your last clean
shirt. Then you shuffle about in the kitchen,
scooping cold milk and cereal into your
mouth while willing the kettle to boil. Finally
you pour half of the scalding hot mug of
tea down your cold throat, throw the
remainder down the sink and go out to
face the day.
Triton used to watch me go through this
routine from his comfy corner of the
kitchen . As he matured and became wiser
in the ways of humans, he had learned
that they - especially this one - were not
at their best at 5.15am. He had found out
I was not at all keen on the big welcome
- paws on chest, facewash with his tongue
- before dawn had broken . I know it's
unfair but - yes, I admit it - it made me
irritable.
Now, at the wise old age of eight, his
early morning acknowledgment of my
presence was much more decorous. The
nearest ear would cock towards me. The
eyes would swivel round, but his head
would not move and the first six inches of
his tail would gently wave up and down
while the rest of it lay still on the floor.
'Hello son,' I would say. A moment's
pause would follow while Triton absorbed
the tone of my voice . Then, having judged
it safe to do so, he would slowly rise and
stretch first his front legs, then his back
legs, lift his chin , wag his tail and allow me
to fondle the top of his head.
This routine complete, it was on with the
coat and out to the car. The journey was
16 Service Dog
gauged exactly to arrive at the nick at
5.42am precisely - just in time for the
unit's parade.
In the 1970s this was a much more
relaxed affair than it had been when I
joined the service in 1965. The youngest
officer on the shift made the tea, of course,
and everyone sat round the table in
leisurely fashion, only half absorbing their
area postings, refreshment break times,
important car numbers, active disqualified
drivers and so on.
Jokes were scarce at this time in the
morning; even the shift maniac was quiet.
I booked on with force control room ; the
usual pleasantries were exchanged: 'I'm
going to take my dog over the park for 20
minutes and then I must get on with the
paperwork for the three prisoners I had for
burglary last week.'
'OK. We'll try and leave you in peace.'
With Triton walked -only one squirrel to
chase that morning - back in the dog
office, I began to write furiously. The one
advantage of the first part of the morning
shift was the quiet: an ideal opportunity to
catch up on reports you never had time for
on nights, meant to do on second watch
and now really had to get on with. Loads
of time - it was only quarter to seven. The
phone rang, my heart sank. Reluctantly I
picked up the receiver.
'Steve, it's Barry. We're going to lift
Dave the Rave from his drum - 7.15 RV
at the Gospel. Can you cover the back in
case he does a runner?'
'See you there,' I replied.
A translation would read: 'PC Lewis?
This is DC Collins. We are hoping to
arrest a Mr David Jackson at his home
address. We are rendezvousing at a
quarter past seven on the car park of the
AN EXTRACT FROM STEVE LEWIS'S BOOK TRITON - APOlleE DOG'S TALE
Gospel Oak licensed house and we would
like you and your dog in the back garden
in case Mr Jackson tries to escape.'
But, of course, police officers never talk
to each other like that. I gathered the
papers spread across the desk and threw
them back in the folder with a sigh. What
the helll Who needs reports anyway?
Dave the Rave is a much better prospect.
He's met Triton before and may still have
the scars to prove it. Let's go.
Half an hour later, four CID men in two
cars, with me following in the dog van ,
crept to a halt at the corner of the cui de
sac. Triton was positively tingling with
excitement. I went first. With Triton on the
lead, I tiptoed quickly halfway down the
cui de sac and dashed into the rear alley
that gave access to the garages - four
houses along and quietly through the
broken back gate into the rubbish tip of a
garden.
Triton and I picked our way carefully
towards the house. It was mid-October
and still not full light, so I tried to melt into
the overgrown privet hedge. A minute
passed in silence before a thunderous
hammering on the front door.
The noise ceased. Triton strained at his
lead, lopped round his choke chain ready
for instant release. Not a movement in the
house, Dave and his family were old
hands at this game. More hammering on
the front door. 'Open up, this is the police.'
Right above me a bedroom. window
stealthily opened and a leg appeared,
followed by a head and an arm reaching
for the drainpipe. Triton was trembling
with anticipation when the man's hand
slipped, dislodging some mortar from
behind the pipe.
It seemed to crash like thunder in the
yard and I couldn't blame Triton for what
he did, really I couldn't. All his pent-up
excitement exploded in the loudest bark
you ever heard. Mr David Jackson,
precariously balanced as he was, nearly
fell off the window ledge there and then
out of sheer fright. He recovered in time
and sat there swaying . I'm sure I could
see his heart beating.
'Excuse me, Dave,' I said. 'I think there
are some gentlemen at the front door
would like a quick work with you , if you
don't mind. There's a good lad. '
I saw him eye up the distance to the
outhouse roof. 'Don't even think about it
Dave ,' I said, 'Remember last time?'
He grunted: 'Yeah, I remember last
time. OK. OK, I'm going .'
Once I knew the CID had Dave safely in
custody, I walked round to the front and
waited for the lads to bring him out. As
they walked him down the path I saw
Triton sniff the air as he caught Dave the
Rave 's scent. Triton licked his lips and
his mouth half opened in a smile (of
course, dogs can smile) . I'm pretty sure
that Triton remembered last time as well.
Back in the dog van I looked at my
watch: quarter to nine. What with
searching the house and one thing and
another we'd been there well over an
hour.
Never mind, still plenty of time to do my
paperwork, but first I thought 'Breakfast.'
Yes, breakfast with all the trimmings and
then I could do those reports in the peace
of mid-morning. There would be loads of
time, loads ... The radio bursts into life.
'Foxtrot Tango Six, are you clear yet?'
I hate earlies.
I'm tired ...
Yes, I'm tired. For several
years I've been blaming it on
middle age, poor blood, lack
of vitamins, air pollution,
saccharin, obesity, dieting,
yellow wax build up and a
dozen other maladies that
make you wonder iflife is really
worth living.
But I found out that it ain't
that.
I'm tired because I am
overworked.
The population of the country
is 51 million.
21 million are retired, that
leaves 30 million to do the
work.
There are 19 million in school.
That leaves 11 million to do
the work.
2 million are unemployed and
4 million are employed by the
Government. That leaves 5
million to do the work.
1 million are in the armed
forces, which leaves 4 million
to do the work.
3 million are employed by
County and Borough Councils
leaving 1 million to do the
work.
There are 620,000 people in
hospital and 379,998 in prison.
That leaves 2 people to do the
work.
You and me.
And you are sitting on your
arse reading this, no wonder
I'm bloody tired!
I ~ It's just a
rumour
A West Midlands police dog handler
put his dog into the dog van at the
start of the shift and was shortly
sent out to an incident.
On arrival at the scene he jumped
out and went round to the back of
the van, only to find that he had
driven off in the wrong dog van,
leaving his police dog behind at the
police station in another vehicle.
When he returned to the police
station, he found his dog, fast
asleep, in the van he should have
taken.
A rumour is going round that the
handler is now going to voice
training lessons to learn to bark
properly.
Strange but true
A dog has around 220 million
olfactory sensory cells compared
with 5 million in man. If the
membranes lining the inside of a
dog's nose were laid out flat, the
total surface area would be far
greater than the total surface
area of the dog's body!
The 1994 Crufts Dog Show was
held at the National Exhibition
also to the general public.
This year I am happy to report that
not only was the Canine Careers
police stand back , (we would like to
think by popular demand), but our
colleagues from HM Customs and
Excise retained the popular stand
they had last year, and we saw a
Ministry of Defence handler and a
Prison SeNice handler, welcoming
visitors to one of Pedigree Petfoods
stands near to the main arena.
Well done everyone, and a big
thank you to all the seNices who
allowed their handlers and dogs to
take part, they were a credit to your
services and attracted a great deal
of attention.
Make a note in your 1995 diary.
again atthe National Exhibition Centre
It is with great sadness that I
have to report the death of one of
our members, Keith Lake, who
died on Thursday 30 December
1993.
Keith was an operational
Metropolitan Police Dog Handler
for 20 years from 1961 unti11981,
when he transferred to the
instructional staff at the
Metropolitan Police Dog Training
School at Keston, Kent.
His achievements in both Police
and Civilian Trials were second
to none. Winner of the
Metropolitan Police Dog
Championships on three
separate occasions he was the
National Police Dog Champion
in 1975, the same year that he
won the Police Dog Stake in the
first Kennel Club Working Trials.
He trained and handled two
Working Trials Champions both
with wins in both PD and TD
stakes (Police Dog and Tracking
Dog).
Keith Lake was not just a dog
trainer and competitor, he was
the type of person who was
prepared to give 100 per cent of
his time to his chosen profession
and sport.
A member of the Southern
Alsatian Training Society he was
also a committee member of the
Associated Sheep, Police and
Army Dog Society from 1974,
becoming the Chairman of the
Society from 1985 until 1993
when ill health caused him to
retire from a post he loved.
Having retired from the police
service in 1990, his death at the
age of 57 has robbed us of a
friend, a colleague and a person
who members will associate with
when he is described as a 'Great
Doggie Man.'
The sympathy of the British
Police and Services Canine
Association and its members is
extended to his widow Rowena
Kruger is ready to hit the police beat with
a great tradition of ratting and herding
behind him.
He's about to go to work for Durham
Constabulary, the first giant schnauzer to
join a British police force.
The breed originates in Bavaria where
back in the 17th century they were noted
as excellent ratters and used for herding
pigs and cattle.
After a 13 week training course, 18
month old Kruger is ready to pound the
beat.
Sgt Paul Hedges, in charge of the force's
dog section, said: 'The vast majority of
dogs we use for police work are German
Shepherds, but in recent years the regular
supply of such dogs has started to dwindle.
'As a result we are having a look at other
breeds and I am delighted to say that
Kruger has passed all his tests with flying
colours.'
Kruger also has an excellent nose, and
can pick up the scent of suspects long
after it has faded for other dogs.
He was given to the force by a
Lincolnshire breeder.
For a healthy dog
feed Wuffitmix's
complete range
With over 30 successful years of
manufacturing Wuffitmix complete dog
foods, Lancashire-based B Dugdale and
Son Ltd, has developed a comprehensive
range suitable for all breeds from the
moment of birth to a healthy old age.
Research and development by the
company's nutrition experts has resulted
in all Wuffitmix products being specifically
formulated to the highest quality
standard, which the government has
acknowledged by awarding the company
BS5750 part 2.
Its range is approximately three times
more cost effective than equivalent
canned or fresh meat products, and
nutritionally the comparative food value
for one kilogramme of Wuffitmix complete
dog food is equivalent to eight cans of
tinned food.
For safety and hygiene reasons many
dog foods require cooking and freezing
before feeding. With Wuffitmix this is not
necessary - removing many of the
feeding inconveniences.
At Dugdales the aim is to provide a
properly balanced diet, pre-cooked for
digestibility and containing all the
proteins, oils, dietary fibre, vitamins and
minerals dogs need to help keep them in
peak condition.
The company has developed a
specifically formulated puppy diet suitable
for all breeds from birth to adulthood,
providing correct quantities of energy,
minerals and vitamins.
Instalac is the natural replacement for
puppies requiring milk when the mother's
own is not available, making the
progression easy, after four weeks, onto
Instabreak - a milky breakfast cereal
made from the finest quality oats and
bitch milk replacement.
To a healthy, fast-growing puppy it is
recommended to feed Headstart - a high
protein meal tasting of real meat and
containing all essential natural
ingredients.
The company also manufacture a
For dogs not requiring a high specification
A new product to the range is Condition,
Service Dog 33
A COMPLETELY new remedy which has
given remarkable results in Europe is now
available in Britain.
Vitro San is a completely herbal formula which has given proven results in dogs with
coat and skin problems, as well as helping improve appetite and general condition.
Created in Switzerland, Vitro San has been used in a number of top breeding, showing
and working kennels who report superb results in coat, skin and condition of their
dogs.
Because Vitro San is completely herbal, it can be safely given to all dogs without fear
of harmful side effects. It is based on fenugreek which has been known as a remedy
for over 4,000 years, and the special extract made from fenugreek helps dogs
suffering from meagreness, debility, anorexia, athrosis, eczema, dandruff and hair
loss, and in convalescence.
Coat problems including dull, thin or poorly-growing coats, loss of hair and pigment
problems have responded to Vitro San, and when one considers the expense of vets'
fees for dealing with such a problem, Vitro San may be the answer to many problems
at a very reasonable cost.
Show, working and breeding dogs have special needs, and activity problems need a
special answer. Vitro San can help dogs with exhaustion, loss of appetite, vitamin
deficiency, blood deficiency, arthritis, stress and so on. It is also beneficial for
pregnant and suckling bitches.
Of course, it is not only show and working dogs which can benefit from this new
product - any pet dogs which suffer from skin and coat conditions, or from general
health problems, would benefit from a course of Vitro San. And a useful' spin-off' is
that dogs using this remedy are found to be livelier and to have much more stamina
than before.
If you need any more reassurance, every customer we have phoned has agreed to be
contacted. If you wish to do so, contact Helmut Luking or your local agents. We will
supply you with a list of local success stories. No matter what condition your pet is in
at the moment, dog or cat, Vitro San can be beneficial for it because of the natural
ingredients.
Herbal power created by nature for your pet!
To sum it up, Vitro San strengthens the immune system of your best friend! Do act
now. Vitro San will save you money and trouble in the long run. You and your pet will
soon join the long line of satisfied customers.
ISLE OF MAN CONSTABULARY DOG SECTION
1993 One Day show
The Isle of Man Constabulary has the
smallest dog section in the United
holding, on Thursday 5 August last year,
a 'one day dog show' in conjunction with
the Royal Manx Agricultural Show.
Nine handlers and their dogs ,
representing Merseyside, Lancashire,
Cheshire, Greater Manchester and British
Transport Police took part ina competition
based on Part One of Home Office
Schedule of Training, which was judged
by Mr Ron Dean , Retired Chief Inspector,
Dog Section, Lancashire Constabulary.
After several hours of intense, but good
natured competition, the eventual winner
was Police Constable Wally Sherington
BARROWMORE VILLAGE
SETTLEMENT
The story sofar
For all listeners to good stories or radio
serials there has to be a punch line at the end
to make you buy next week's edition or
switch on the radio 'at the same time
tomorrow evening' . The technique is as
valid today in Neighbours as it was 40 years
or more ago in Dick Barton or Mrs Dale's
Diary! In the last edition of The Service Dog
we left you with news of the opening of our
Nursing Home in June last year which,
while it says a lot about Barrowmore says
nothing at all about dogs - guard, war,
sniffer or even Auntie Maud's pet poodle.
However, read on dear reader, read on.
The story today
The Nursing Home, which had an
honourable mention in the last edition has
now been officially opened by Prince
Andrew and all our ex-Service residents
were able to meet him individually. Almost
50% of our residents are ex-servicemen or
women. One fought at Paschendale, another
was captured at Dunkirk, was marched to
Poland by the Germans and spent the rest of
the war in captivity, yet another was in
Pathfinder bombers.
We told you, also , in the last edition that
Barrowmore Industries was innovative and
had diversified into new products. Those
new products were only ' new ' for a short
length of time and are now well established
in our product range to the extent that in the
financial year 1993/4 dog kennels and
training aids together produced more than
one third of our total turnover and became
our largest selling product line. Much of our
design work was carried out in conjunction
with our customers and kennels are custom
made to their own specifications. Almost all
our production goes to police forces and the
services.
The stability that production of dog kennels
gave us during the recession has enabled us
to make further improvements to our core
product range of garden sheds and fencing
panels. We have also been able to extend our
customer base for kennels to provide further
work for our disabled workers.
The story for the future
Everything changes but everything stays the
same. Our greatest handicap is our greatest
strength. Two apparently contradictory
statements which make perfect sense.
Everybody has heard about the management
of change and the adoption of BS 5750 as a
standard of quality management.
Barrowmore is working hard to achieve BS
5750 registration and, by the time of the
next edition we will be in the middle of the
assessment period. However, it is rightly
said that BS 5750 is only the management
system for the quality of our products - our
products should be and are of the sanle high
quality that they have always been.
More than 80% of our production workers
are disabled. Our workforce is our greatest
strength but in our particular case they all
have a handicap. We are all, I hope, trying to
make an honest penny and Barrowmore is
no different to the rest of us - we just have
to work harder at it. Our next target will be
the Investors in People registration which
will demonstrate our commitment to our
disabled workers. Watch this space!
Trials in
the
United
States
The biggest difference
between police dog
trials in the United
States and dog trials
in the United Kingdom is that the trials in
the US are organised both regionally and
nationally by the United States Police K
g Association.
With over 2,500 members you can
understand its proud boast that it is the
largest active organisation of its kind in
the world .
Once a year the USPCA sponsors a
National Trial, and, like here , handlers
must first quality at as USPCA regional
trial.
All these events are judged by both
serving and retired nationally certified
judges. Seminars are organised and
certification trials held at which drug ,
explosive and arson detecting dogs are
licensed.
Last October, while on holiday with my
family in Florida, I was able to attend the
2nd Annual National Detector and
Tracking Certification , hosted by Charlotte
County Sheriffs Office, Port Charlotte,
Florida. I was only able to spend two days
at the event, but in that short period of
time I met a great bunch of truly
professional dog handlers.
The trial was based at one of the local
motels, complete with swimming pool,
and handlers were allowed to keep their
dogs in the comfort of the air conditioned
rooms , a suitable warning pinned to the
door of the rooms for the benefit of the
maid service.
I watched dogs of various shapes and
sizes being put through a series of tests,
both inside prem ises and outside on
parked vehicles for drug and explosive
detection.
Seminars were organised throughout
the week, covering subjects such as
narcotic concealment on motor vehicles,
38 Service Dog
Dogs to faraway places by air?
Skymaster has over 25 years
experience in this speciality.
arson, explosives and tracking. I attended
two and found them very interesting.
At the end of each day handlers, their
wives, guests, judges and officials met
together in the hospitality suite and relaxed
over a few beers.
I had a great time and my thanks are
sent to Jim Nichols, Don Slavik, Richard
Rogers, all the handlers and the USPCA
personnel for making me so welcome.
Recommendation: If you are on holiday
in either the United States or Canada this
year, check their calendar of events on
holiday area just go along and introduce
yourself, you will find you are a member of
At last - a modern approach to
dog kennelling!
The PARASOL Animal Housing System
launched this year at Crufts, applies a unique modem approach to the question of dog housing.
So many conventionl wooden and brick kennels fail to satisfy the high standards now
demanded by Government Environmental Health officers and animal carers alike, and require
constant - and expensive - maintenance and replacement.
To combat these problems and to provide a comfortable and stress-free environment for
working and breeding dogs and boarding kennels, the PARASOL housing system has been
developed over the last few years by experienced Engineers working in collaboration with
Wood Green Animal Shelters, well known in the world of animal welfare.
The PARASOL system system uses pre-assembled modular components allowing flexibility in
layout and ease of installation.
Internal walls are constructed of pre-finished composite panels framed in galvanised steel,
with high grade insulation bonded both sides to water-resistant cement particle board. These
panels have a tough and smooth surface which is resistant to germs and fire alike, and gives
exceptional sound and heat insulation. The pop hole and trapdoor between the sleeping and
exercise areas is fitted with a unique counterbalance system.
All the steel grilles and doors have been designed with safety and security in mind, using
heavy panels and frames galvnised after manufacture and fitted high quality door locks and
hinges.
The most efficient kennel design is the circular PARASOL building - shown here under
construction.
A standard circular PARASOL provides individual sleeping and exercise areas for fifteen
dogs, with an entrance to the central service core fitted with heaters, lighting and ventilation
fan, and facilities for food storage and preparation.
The joy of the PARASOL system is that the same components may also be used in a variety of
different layouts to suit 'barrack-block' kennels in multiple or single units, or to provide
