By Dawn's Early Light I hate earlies. Whether you call it first watch , morning shift or early turn . I still hate them. It's simply not natural to get out of a warm bed before five o'clock in the morning only to blunder about in the bathroom, praying you don't cut yourself shaving and bleed all over your last clean shirt. Then you shuffle about in the kitchen, scooping cold milk and cereal into your mouth while willing the kettle to boil. Finally you pour half of the scalding hot mug of tea down your cold throat, throw the remainder down the sink and go out to face the day. Triton used to watch me go through this routine from his comfy corner of the kitchen . As he matured and became wiser in the ways of humans, he had learned that they - especially this one - were not at their best at 5.15am. He had found out I was not at all keen on the big welcome - paws on chest, facewash with his tongue - before dawn had broken . I know it's unfair but - yes, I admit it - it made me irritable. Now, at the wise old age of eight, his early morning acknowledgment of my presence was much more decorous. The nearest ear would cock towards me. The eyes would swivel round, but his head would not move and the first six inches of his tail would gently wave up and down while the rest of it lay still on the floor. 'Hello son,' I would say. A moment's pause would follow while Triton absorbed the tone of my voice . Then, having judged it safe to do so, he would slowly rise and stretch first his front legs, then his back legs, lift his chin , wag his tail and allow me to fondle the top of his head. This routine complete, it was on with the coat and out to the car. The journey was 16 Service <strong>Dog</strong> gauged exactly to arrive at the nick at 5.42am precisely - just in time for the unit's parade. In the 1970s this was a much more relaxed affair than it had been when I joined the service in 1965. The youngest officer on the shift made the tea, of course, and everyone sat round the table in leisurely fashion, only half absorbing their area postings, refreshment break times, important car numbers, active disqualified drivers and so on. Jokes were scarce at this time in the morning; even the shift maniac was quiet. I booked on with force control room ; the usual pleasantries were exchanged: 'I'm going to take my dog over the park for 20 minutes and then I must get on with the paperwork for the three prisoners I had for burglary last week.' 'OK. We'll try and leave you in peace.' With Triton walked -only one squirrel to chase that morning - back in the dog office, I began to write furiously. The one advantage of the first part of the morning shift was the quiet: an ideal opportunity to catch up on reports you never had time for on nights, meant to do on second watch and now really had to get on with. Loads of time - it was only quarter to seven. The phone rang, my heart sank. Reluctantly I picked up the receiver. 'Steve, it's Barry. We're going to lift Dave the Rave from his drum - 7.15 RV at the Gospel. Can you cover the back in case he does a runner?' 'See you there,' I replied. A translation would read: 'PC Lewis?
