Re-creating <strong>the</strong> art <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> copy RE.CREATION/RE-CREATION ­The An <strong>of</strong> Copying, 19th and 20thcenturies, is <strong>the</strong> University Gallery'sfinal exhibition for <strong>the</strong> year.The cura<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> exhibition, MerrynGates. concentrated on three differenttypes <strong>of</strong> copying practice: <strong>the</strong> studentcopy. <strong>the</strong> mature copy and <strong>the</strong> contemporarycopy.The exhibition includes rarely-seenworks from <strong>the</strong> Collections <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> NationalGallery <strong>of</strong> V icloria and regional galleriesas well as plaster casts <strong>of</strong> antiquesculptures and contemporary artists fromMelbourne and Sydney.For many centuries <strong>the</strong> practice <strong>of</strong> copying<strong>the</strong> works <strong>of</strong> master painters bystudents and apprentices was an accepted,even preferred. way <strong>of</strong> teaching lhetechnical skills <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> artist.During <strong>the</strong> 19th and 20th centuries, <strong>the</strong>practice <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> an <strong>of</strong> copying fell in<strong>to</strong>disrepute in preference for <strong>the</strong> notion <strong>of</strong>originalily.
