Pioneer warden of Halls opts for active retirement WHEN Monash University opened in1961 the north-east COrner of the campuswas a bare patch of red clay whichhad been levelled to pour the concretefloor for a large factory. That samearea now is home to more than 1000members of the university in the fiveHalls of Residence. The man who, as the first warden ofDeakin Hall, pioneered that developmentis Dr Jack McDonell. At the end of theyear he will retire from the university after28 years of service. When Deakin Hall opened in 1962. itwas only the second co-educationalresidence in an Australian university.Bruce Hall at ANU had opened in 1961with separate buildings for men andwomen. But Deakin was the first to housemale and female students in the samebuilding. and it set the pattern for all thefuture halls.Almost every year during the 60s a newbuilding was added to the complex . Whenthe Central Dining Halls completed thegroup. Jack McDonell became the ExecutiveWarden. In this position he not only consolidateda pauern of life for student residenceswhich was different from the more traditionalcolleges at older universities. but healso developed a management structurewhich included student representation. andwas flexible enough to respond to the rapidchanges of the late 60s.By the end of 1972 when he left theHalls, the red clay patch had been lUrnedinto the pleasantly landscaped site we seetoday. The complex stands as a tribute to11 years of pioneering work led by JackMcDonell.Although life as Warden of Deakin HaJJwas often a 24-hour a day, seven days aweek responsibility. it was not the onlyposition Jack held during these early years. He became a pan-time lecturer in Physics, having come to Monash from the PhysicsDepartment of Melbourne. The First Year Physics Laboratories hadto be designed well before the appointmentof Bob Street as Professor. Jack. with hisobvious knowledge and experience inlaboratory teaching, was on hand to advisethe architects. It is obvious his advice wasgood. The layout has changed onlyminimally over the subsequent 28 years. He was always concerned to bring aboutimprovements in teaching. laboratoryMcDonell has become more widelyknown . And in recent years. the managementof Normanby House has brought himback into contact with those university administratorswith whom he worked soclosely at the Halls. There are those who have known Jackwell in other spheres of university life. Heplayed a leading role. for instance. in theearly year of the academic staff association(SAMU).He also contributed to the establishmentof sport at Monash as the founding presidentof the Monash Baseball Club. evencoming OUI of retirement to play for theclub early on. (Jack was awarded a FullBlue for baseball at Melbourne University.and still remembers with relish playingbefore a crowd of about 20.O at PrincesPark in the days when baseball was used asa curtain raiser to VFL matches.)Jack often participated in student/staffand interdepanmental cricket matches. Histheories about off-breaks delivered outsidethe leg stump were contrary to hisknowledge of physics and a definite dangerto those fielding close to the bal.He was an active member of the StaffDrama Group which provided some of theearliest theatre on the campus. includingseveral of the initial productions at theAlexander Theatre when it opened in1967.In his retirement Jack hopes to spendmore time helping to develop anmherpioneering venture in education.
