RENWICK RUGBY CLUBCLUB RUGBYThe Renwick Rugby Football Club’s focusis on developing and retaining playersfrom junior level all the way to thesenior and premier grades.“We’re a close-knit club,” PresidentHamish Macdonald says, “our seniorsides work very closely together andare always happy to help out with thejunior sides too. We’re going to havea Kids Day one Sunday this seasonand the Senior A and Premier teamswill be involved with those. We’ve hadthe under 12’s team come along toPremier grade trainings too so they canexperience how they do things andwe’re looking forward to doing moreof those sorts of initiatives. It’s all aboutdeveloping that love of the game in thechildren, who are the future of our club, and working together for the good ofthe club and the players is the best wayof doing that.”This will be the club’s second full seasonwith the use of the fantastic facilitiesavailable in the Giesen Sports and EventsCentre, which has done a lot for thespirit of the club. Hamish says that therehas been a big swell in the number ofplayers and supporters attending thetraditional after match functions andthey’re looking forward to more of thatthis year. Each home game we will invitetwo of the junior teams to attend theaftermatch where they will be handedout their players of the day awards.“After one game last year, we had a lotof our players stay till late at the EventsCentre along with players from Centralto watch an All Blacks test – it’s anexample of the way great facilities canbuild camaraderie amongst not just clubmembers, but all the sportspeople thatplay there.”Both of Renwick’s Senior teams, theSenior A and Premier side, are looking toimprove their performances after whatwas a fairly successful year in 2010,where the Premier’s made the semis andthe Senior A’s made the final. Both willbe looking to go further this season,as they welcome the bulk of their bothsquads back for another tilt at the titles.ClubContactsSeniorMattMcDougall –027 413 2245JABVicki Harrison-Jones021 767 482Renwick’s Corey Bovey pierces a gap versus HarlequinsHarlequins’ Jon Cooke tries to evade Renwick Number 8 Paul Frost inlast year’s WADSCO Division Two finalNEW 4 BEDROOM HOME 165m²$187,500 incl GSTNEW 4 BEDROOM HOME 180m²$204,900 incl GSTHarlequin’s defenders can’t stop Renwick’s Sam Thomas3585109AAINCLUDED• Bosch appliances• All service connections to 15m• Polystyrene in slab• Building consent to $2,500• Included carpets, vinyls anddesigner kitchenPH 572 5210 or 0800 NS HOMES36 High Street, Renwick, BlenheimMajor sponsors of Renwick club rugbyPlay fair, play hard and have fun!!3581064AARenwick and Rural SpecialistsRemember to ask about the Harcourts CommunityReferral Network, list and sell your home withHarcourts and we give back to our community, just ask Rhonda or Tom today!Rhonda Stewart 021 736 922Tom Rutherford 021 300 000MarlboroughP: 03 578 0888E: rhonda.stewart@harcourts.co.nz or tom.rutherford@harcourts co.nz W: Marlborough.harcourts.co.nz

MARLBOROUGH RUGBY REFEREES ASSOCIATIONMake refereeing your chosen sport!CLUB RUGBYThat’s the simple message from MarlboroughReferees Association President Lyall Daines.“There are some great opportunities openedup to people through refereeing,” he says,“and that’s not really recognised. Using mycase as an example, I’ve only ever been anamateur referee but it’s still taken me halfway around the world.”So why referee?Firstly, if for whatever reason your playingdays are behind you – refereeing allowsyou to stay in the game. This was the casewith Lyall, whose playing days ended withrecurring concussions at the age of 18, evenso he has remained involved with the gamehe loves since then by taking up the whistlerather than the ball.“Refereeing also gives you the best seat inthe house,” he says, “I love rugby and I lovethe opportunity to give 30 players the bestchance of playing a good game and I getthe best view of some of the great plays thathappen week in and week out.”Further to all this, refereeing also offers youa career.“We have international standard trainingprogrammes for our referees and we offera structured season with social networkingopportunities and a high level of support. Wehave excellent referee coaches and benefitfrom two test referees on those ranks in DaveBishop and Kelvin Deaker. They are only toohappy to pass on their vast experience tonew referees and they are backed up by aquality coaching structure and internationallyrecognised official qualifications. There is asuccessful career awaiting people who takeup the chance to referee and we’ve got theexperience and expertise in Marlborough toget you started on that career path.”So why not take up the whistle this seasonand see the opportunities available foryourself - you could go a long way withrefereeing as your chosen sport.Referee ContactSenior: Lyall Daines 578 4331, 027 6244002Referee Chelsea Gurr sets a scrum in last year’s Under 16 encounterbetween Marlborough and Nelson BaysMarlborough Referee Ben O’KeeffeReferee Malcolm Taylor talks to the noisy crowd.TROUGHS & TANKS RETICULATION & IRRIGATIONDRAINAGE EFFLUENT WASTEWATER TREATMENTGREAT RURALSPECIALSMake the right callThe Marlborough Express, supporting Marlboroughevery day.
