• The categories of genetic engineeringexperiments on plants have been notifiedspecifically under the “Revised Guidelines forResearch in Transgenic Plant, 1998” by DBT• In this categorization, routine recombinant DNAexperiments fall in Category I and need onlyintimation to the IBSC• Category II include lab and greenhouseexperiments in contained environment wheredefined DNA fragments that are non pathogenicto human and animals are used for genetictransformation of plants
• Category III pertains to high risk experimentswhere the escape of transgenic traits into theopen environment could cause significantalterations in the biosphere, the ecosystem,the plants and animals.• All experiments conducted in greenhouse andopen field conditions not belonging to theabove Category II types, would fall underCategory III risks• Such experiments could be conducted onlyafter clearance from RCGM and notified by theDepartment of Biotechnology
