1. Requirements<br />

Space: The area required for sett<strong>in</strong>g up <strong>the</strong> facility is only 10 square meters, well-lighted,<br />
clean and preferably air-conditioned.<br />
Manpower: One of <strong>the</strong> exist<strong>in</strong>g doctors and technicians should be designated for this<br />
purpose. They should be tra<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> operation of blood storage centers and o<strong>the</strong>r basic<br />
procedures like storage, group<strong>in</strong>g, cross- match<strong>in</strong>g and release of blood.<br />
The medical officer designated for this purpose will be responsible for overall work<strong>in</strong>g<br />
of <strong>the</strong> storage center.<br />
Electricity: 24 hours supply is essential. Provision of back-up generator is required.<br />
Equipment: Each FRU should have <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g:<br />
1. Blood bag refrigerators hav<strong>in</strong>g a storage capacity of 50 units of blood.<br />
1. Deep freezers for freez<strong>in</strong>g ice packs required for transportation. The deep freezers<br />
available <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> FRUs under <strong>the</strong> Immunization Programme can be utilized for this<br />
purpose.<br />
2. Insulated carrier boxes with ice packs for ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> cold cha<strong>in</strong> dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />
transportation of blood bags.<br />
3. Microscope and centrifuge: s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong>se are an <strong>in</strong>tegral part of any exist<strong>in</strong>g<br />
laboratory, <strong>the</strong>se would already be available at <strong>the</strong> FRUs. These should be<br />
supplied only if <strong>the</strong>y are not already available.<br />
Consumables: There should be adequate provision for consumables and blood group<strong>in</strong>g<br />
reagents. The follow<strong>in</strong>g quantities would suffice <strong>the</strong> annual requirement of an FRU with<br />
up to 50 beds.<br />
