DATA SHEETTellabs ® 6305Ethernet Media ConverterDeliver carrier-class Carrier Ethernet services to business and residential customers.OverviewThe Tellabs ® 6305 Ethernet Media Converter is a managed mediaconverter that enables delivery of cost-effective Carrier Ethernetservices using Fiber-To-The-Premises (FTTP). When located oncustomer premises, the media converter can be fully monitored froma central management system for faults using the Operation,Administration and Maintenance (OAM) feature. With plug-and-playinstallation, the Tellabs 6305 converter is an ideal way toconnect business customers into a Metro Area Network or deliverresidential services to a multi-tenant unit.Features and BenefitsFirst Mile Fiber AccessWith business customers increasingly bandwidth-hungry, manyoperators are struggling to keep pace with their existing copperinfrastructure. As IP telephony replaces TDM based systems,an optical Ethernet connection is sufficient for all externalcommunication — whether data or telephony.FTTP has been a dream for several years, promising almostunlimited bandwidth to enable delivery of Triple Play services(Telephony, Internet and Video) over a fiber connection. Many newhouses and buildings constructed today are prepared forfiber access. The Tellabs 6305 converter helps make FTTP a reality. Locatingthe media converter at the customer premises enables the operatorto reach customers over fiber, while still selling a standard Ethernetelectrical interface. Being part of the operator’s network permits theconverter to act as a managed demarcation point between theoperator and the customer. The demarcation can also be betweendifferent operators (or departments within an operator), therebydelimiting the SLA responsibilities for the Ethernet bearer fromadded-value services.Tellabs ® 6305 Ethernet Media Converter is deployed at the customer premises. The Tellabs 6305 converter reports alarms over the fiber connectionusing the secure OAM protocol. From the ETEX module in a Tellabs6300 system network element, the alarms are forwarded to thecentralized management system, enabling the operator to monitorthe complete network all the way out to the customer’s premises. Asthe media converter supports the Dying Gasp feature, it is evenpossible for the operator to distinguish between a power failure atthe customer premises and a transmission failure, and therebyavoid unnecessary truck rolls.Pluggable Optical TransceiversThe optical interface on the media converter is supplied with aslot for SFP pluggable transceivers. This provides a wide rangeof options for the fiber connection, including Single Mode and MultiMode, bi-directional transmission over just one single fiber orcertain WDM wavelengths for premises where multiple end-usersshare the same fibers.Managed Media ConverterThe Tellabs 6305 converter is fully managed over the fiberwhen connected to an ETEX module hosted in a Tellabs 6300Managed Transport System network element or any other Ethernetdevice supporting IEEE 802.3ah.The Tellabs 6305 converter conforms to all relevant Ethernet FirstMile standards.See tellabs.com for more information about Tellabs Solutions
