The Tellabs system also had to support thecarrier’s 3G and 4G services with Ethernet backhaul capabilities. The Tellabs 8000 intelligent manager had to interface with theIBM ® Tivoli ® Netcool ® fault management system, which served asthe primary control interface in the carrier’s Network OperationsCenter (NOC). Tellabs also needed to install a backup Tellabs 8000intelligent manager in a separate data center. Why TellabsThe wireless carrier chose the Tellabs 8600 router because of theproduct’s proven capabilities and its reputation in the mobile backhaulmarket. The wireless carrier had conducted lab tests using theequipment for more than 2 years before choosing the Tellabs system. The Tellabs 8000 intelligent manager’s ability to control a largenetwork with many nodes was an important factor in the carrier’sdecision. Another factor was Tellabs’ strong expertise in networkmanagement system deployment and integration.Tellabs Global Services provided tailored services to meet thecarrier’s unique network management requirements, including:• Design services that delivered management system and securityrequirements• Database software installation and configuration• Tellabs 8000 intelligent manager system software installation andconfiguration• System acceptance testingSee tellabs.com for more information about Tellabs Solutions

2 U.S. WIRELESS CARRIER CUTS MOBILE BACKHAUL EXPENSES AND GAINS OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCIES• Northbound Integration (NBI) Services: deployment of necessaryhardware and software to support the NBI, as well as integrationand testing of the system• Tellabs 8000 intelligent manager software update assistance• Redundancy Services: redundant management systemarchitecture and design documentation, implementation, hardware and software configuration, identification of failurescenarios, and failover tests• Documentation: developed customized Method of Proceduredocuments• Knowledge Transfer Service: trained carrier on Tellabs 8000intelligent manager administrative activities and redundancyswitchover processProject ExecutionTellabs Global Services worked with the carrier for 18 months beforethe carrier began deploying the Tellabs 8600 router commercially.Tellabs’ initial responsibilities included working with the carrier’sIT department to select server models and address securityrequirements.“The carrier’s management network was firewalled off from thepeople operating the Tellabs 8000 intelligent manager,” explainedKevin Scurlock, network consultant at Tellabs. To minimize theamount of firewall modifications required and enable access to theTellabs intelligent manager, the carrier deployed a solution basedon virtual desktop technology from Citrix ® . As a result, the firewallrequired only one small change.Another advantage of this approach is that the Tellabs 8000intelligent manager software was not required on every user’sworkstation. “Instead, it’s installed only once on Citrix and sharedamong many users as needed,” Scurlock said.Prior to installing the first Tellabs 8600 router, Tellabs GlobalServices integrated a northbound interface with the Netcoolsystem. “We needed to be able to forward groups of alarms tothe Netcool system so they could be seen in the NOC,” recalledMike Scott, executive account director at Tellabs. “We needed toprovide advanced Ethernet diagnostic capabilities. We had to havethe ability to do packet loop testing, measuring packets sent andpackets received and tracking the number of missing packets. This enabled them to look at conditions in the network and dotroubleshooting.”The wireless carrier also wanted a redundant managementsystem in another part of the country. Tellabs Global Servicesinstalled additional Tellabs 8000 intelligent manager equipment, termed a “warm standby” solution, in the second location. The next phase of the project required Tellabs to complete 50% ofits Tellabs 8600 router within one year. During this period, TellabsGlobal Services provided program management, engineering, nodedesign, network design, network integration, Tellabs 8000 intelligentmanager software upgrade assistance and traffic migration.Business ResultsPartnering with Tellabs Global Services was critical to meeting thecarrier’s deployment schedule and to proving its business case.Tellabs helped the carrier speed time-to-market, mitigate risk of dataloss and improve operational efficiencies by integrating the Tellabs8000 intelligent manager into the existing operations support system. As a result, Tellabs Global Services helped the carrier meet its targetdate to implement the initial mobile backhaul roll-out.The Tellabs 8000 intelligent manager will also enable the carrier tomanage other Tellabs equipment. The interfaces developed betweenthe Tellabs 8000 intelligent manager and the Netcool system in theNOC will minimize the time required to deploy new equipment.Tellabs Global ServicesTellabs Global Services delivers quantifiable results that help yousucceed.
