Course InformationBeginnersBasic English using a Computer – please contact Gill Downer on 01244 836607Beginners IT - Introduction to Wordprocessing, Internet and Email (BCS)This course is for people who have not used a computer before or who have very little experience. You will start withthe basics of how to switch a computer on and study what computer hardware and software is, create a simpledocument, use files and folders and browse the internet and use email to send and receive messages. The course isofficially titled “e-citizen”.Level 1Introduction to Wordprocessing, Spreadsheets and Databases (OCN)This course is for people who have some experience of using a computer or have completed the beginner’s course. Anintroduction to creating simple documents in wordprocessing, producing a simple spreadsheet with basic calculationsand creating a simple database to sort and query data. Assessments take place during your class.Introduction to Desk Top Publishing (OCN)This is for people who have some experience of using a computer or have completed the beginner’s course. This is anintroduction to Microsoft Publisher. You will learn how to design and create simple posters, cards and calendars.Assessments take place during your class.Introduction to the Internet and Email (OCN)This is for people who have some experience of using a computer or have completed the beginner’s course. It is anintroduction to how to use the internet, find web pages, use search engines and send and receive emails. Assessmentstake place during your class.European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) essentials – includes Wordprocessing, Internet and Email (BCS)This is for people who have some experience of using a computer or have completed a beginner’s course. The coursecovers the basic concepts of IT, using the computer and managing files, basic system maintenance, internet and emailsand basic wordprocessing. You will learn about computing terminology, how computers work and how to create filesand folders. You will also use the internet to find web pages, search for criteria, bookmark pages, create emails, sendand receive messages and attachments. Assessment is through tests completed in class.IT WorkshopThis is a flexible session where you can choose which qualification you want to study. You will learn at your own paceusing on-line course materials and work books with support from your tutor. Level 2IT WorkshopThis is a flexible session where you can choose which qualification you want to study. Assessment is through tests completed in class.Introduction to Web Page Design (CGLI)This course aims to provide you with the basic skills and knowledge to design a web page. You will study the following -components of a web page, programming languages used for web page construction, web page layout, developmenttools for web page design & creation, linking web pages, graphics, web site development & management, publishingand promoting a web site and web site security issues. Assessment is through assignments completed in class.Level 3European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) Advanced Word (BCS)This is for people who have completed a level 2 course or have sufficient IT experience. This qualification includes -create and manage large, complex word processing projects, illustrate sophisticated typographical, formatting andlayout presentations, (including tables, forms and graphics), use tools such as macros, carry out more advanced mailmerge operations, work effectively on large collaborative projects. Assessment is through a test completed in class.European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) Advanced Spreadsheets (BCS)This is for people who have completed a level 2 course or have sufficient IT experience. This qualification includes -produce higher quality information quicker and more easily, provide more sharply-defined analysis, produce moresophisticated reports, use advanced editing, data handling, functions and analysis features and use macros within thespreadsheets application. Assessment is through a test completed in class.4


Level 3 continuedEuropean Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) Advanced Presentations (BCS)For people who have completed a level 2 course or have sufficient IT experience. This qualification includes - plan anddesign effective presentations with more impact, use advanced features to customise layout and shows, use andmanipulate pictures, images and drawn objects, charts/graphs in presentations, add sophisticated multimediaelements to presentations, use the powerful relating tools to link information to other applications. Assessment isthrough a test completed in class.European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) Advanced Databases (British Computer Society)This is for people who have completed a level 2 course or have sufficient IT experience. This qualification includes:Produce better reports with deeper data analysis, Produce higher quality management information, Use advancedfeatures in table, query, form and report design, Use macros within the database application, import, export and linkdata. Assessment is through a test completed in class.Advanced Diploma for IT Practitioners (ICT Support) (CGLI)This is for people who have completed a level 2 course or have sufficient IT experience. This qualification includesunits - plan for the delivery of ICT support services, assist in the acquisition of ICT systems, install, configure andintegrate networked hardware and software and customer support provision and installing and configuring software andnetworks. Assessment is through assignments and tests completed in class.CLAIT Advanced (OCR) – includes Word Expert (Microsoft Office Specialist), Spreadsheets Expert (Microsoft OfficeSpecialist).This is for people who have completed a level 2 course or have sufficient IT experience. CLAiT Advanced has beendesigned to give you a qualification for a broad range of advanced IT skills. In order to achieve a certificatequalification, you will need to achieve three units; the mandatory unit plus two additional optional units. The optionalunits allow you to develop advanced skills in a range of different IT applications. You can also achieve a Diplomaqualification; for this, you will need to achieve five units, the mandatory unit plus four additional optional units.Certification is also available at unit level. This qualification includes: creating an IT solution, analysing spreadsheetsand graphs, relational databases, e-publication production, professional e-presentation, e-image production or websiteauthoring. Assessment is through assignments completed in class.Intermediate Web Page Design (CGLI)This is for people who have completed a level 2 course or have sufficient IT experience. This qualification is to equipyou with the principles needed to be able to create and maintain a series of web pages creating a web site,incorporating a variety of advanced design and information presentation techniques. The course includes: thefundamentals of advanced web page development, undertake formal user requirements analyses, use appropriatedevelopment tools to implement and test interactive web pages, incorporating advanced design and informationpresentation techniques, and using appropriate graphics software to create and manipulate images. Assessment isthrough assignments and tests completed in class.5


Specialist QualificationsCISCO Academy CCNA – Semesters 1, 2, 3, 4 – ICT networking design, installation and maintenanceThe Cisco Networking Academy programme introduces you to networking principles and concepts and includes theoryand practical sessions. Semester 1 includes: a good understanding of the OSI 7 Layer Model, understand TCP/IP andaddressing, Be able to construct a simple network, Be able to troubleshoot a simple network. You can also studytowards the NWOCN PC Connectivity Award. Each semester is composed of chapters of learning, each with its own onlinetest and practical exercises. The semester has a final online test which will be expected to pass before continuingonto the next semester. After completion of semesters 2 and 4, you can sit the Cisco CCNA examinations.NVQ in IT Practitioner level 1 or 2 or NVQ in IT Professional level 3An NVQ (National Vocational Qualification) is a qualification which assesses someone’s competence (that is the skills,knowledge and understanding they have) in a work situation. To achieve an NVQ for IT Professional, a candidate mustcomplete two mandatory units and a combination of optional units. The NVQ is very flexible and candidates can chooseoptional units from level 1, 2 or 3. If candidates have achieved a previous IT qualification then these can be used tocount towards the NVQ. This NVQ is suitable for anyone who is working in a role which includes some of the following:networking, installing hardware, installing software, systems analysis, website design, database design, help deskoperator etc. The qualification is assessed in the workplace.NVQ in ITQ level 1, 2 or 3An NVQ (National Vocational Qualification) is a qualification which assesses someone’s competence (that is the skills,knowledge and understanding they have) in a work situation. To achieve an NVQ for IT Users, you must complete onemandatory unit and a combination of optional units. The NVQ is very flexible and candidates can choose optional unitsfrom level 1, 2 or 3. If you have achieved a previous IT qualification i.e. ECDL or CLAIT then these can be used tocount towards the NVQ. The mandatory unit is ‘Make selective use of IT’ and the optional units are operate acomputer, IT maintenance for users, IT trouble-shooting for users, IT security for users, artwork and imaging software,internet and intranets, e-mail, word processing software, spreadsheet software, database software, website software,presentation software, specialist or bespoke software, evaluate the impact of IT, use IT systems, use IT to exchangeinformation and a sector specific unit. The qualification is assessed in the workplace6
