Not atrip I would attempt on my own again. On arrival at my hotel afew kilometres from Lonato shooting grounds, I was a wee bitdisappointed that I was the only shooter staying at the hotelbooked for me and there being no evening meals available. It wasgoing to be a one on one with myself for most of my stay.My driver picked me up for practice on the Friday I was blownaway by the sheer scale of the shooting grounds. With 12 OlympicTrap layouts I was in heaven. It was great catching up with shooters from last year and meetingnew ones as well. The Brits had quite a few more shooters thistime. The Italians were a lot more welcoming than last year. They keptcalling me number one. Not something I would keep calling afellow competitor. You have the upper hand right from the start. One thing that stood out was that most teams had manager/continued on page 11gunshot5

MACKINTOSH TEAMMATCH SHOOTINGI picked up a Gunshot magazine abouta month ago, dated July/August 2000 andstarted to browse through it. I was particularlyinterested in an article on page 23, started toread and quickly turned the page to see whohad written it, turned back and continuedreading. When I had finished I thought,‘why am I not surprised as to who wrote thisarticle’; one GEORGE JOHNSON.Now I have been known to gamble a little,so I would lay a bet that this article musthave surely generated some discussion at anexecutive meeting. If it did not I will pay mydebt and just say ‘it should have’.I had not seen the article before [gavethe game away in 1999 through 2006] butI reckon George was onto something thatpossibly did not receive the consideration itprobably deserved. To outline the article very briefly, Georgewas concerned about the fact that ourOpen Mackintosh Team last won the eventin 1982. Remember, the article was writtenin 2000. [note; we have won it twice moresince; 2001 and 2003. I did some researchand found that we have only won it 5 timessince 1957, the other 2 years being 1958and 1970. [For your information, in the sameperiod; Australia 26 times; Canada 17 times;England 4 times; Wales once]. Just five timesin 55 years. With the calibre of shooter wehave had in the past, still currently have andwill continue to have in the future, our winrate should be, at the very least, two to threetimes better. It may be of some interest to thereaders on how our other Teams have fared. From the inaugural matches in 1991 theJuniors have won 5 times, the Ladies 7 timesand the Vets from their inaugural match in1995, just twice. This suggests several thingsto me and surely supports what George wasgetting at in 2000 and what I am getting at inthis article. In his article of 2000, George has four subheadings.Focus; Fatigue; What is the answer; Criteria; In the article George wrote in 2000, he wassuggesting that perhaps the criteria neededto be changed and that there should be a fullday's break from the time of the last qualifierto the time of the Team shoot. George alsosuggested the Team shoot should be heldin the afternoon, but I have no idea for whatreason.Personally I think the CRITERIA are fine, soI will move on to FOCUS.If AA and A grade shooters are honestwith themselves, their primary goal whencompeting at the Nationals would be tostrive for a place in the Open MackintoshTeam. For the majority of contestants if youare not a lady, not young any more or notold, you get just one crack at making oneteam. Obviously, if you shoot top scores, thebonus could be a National title or a place onthe podium. The ‘Team’ being the priority wasalso George’s opinion. B and C graders alsohave the opportunity of course, but theirfocus is probably on performing well in theirgrades.Shooting from Saturday through Tuesdayis only a lead up to what these shooters arereally building for and it can be stressful for anumber of reasons.Shoot time Wednesday arrives and formany the thought process begins to race, notto mention the ticker. Thursday, dependingon how Wednesday turned out, the thoughtprocess may change and the ticker mayquicken a little more. When Friday arrives, each of thecompetitors who are still a part of theequation of qualifying really do‘ get woundup’. The stress sets in and can drain thestrength and scramble the top four inches. There is a handful of competitors who are notaffected by this type of pressure. Maybe theyare the lucky ones, maybe not.By end of shooting on Friday, any shooterwho has performed really well over the threedays of qualifying, will take a deep breath andbe reasonably confident he or she has ‘madeit,’ but not all will be absolutely certain. Theshooters who have experienced three daysof pure hell, or maybe just one of the threedays that we have all been through at sometime, will probably cuss a little, [or a lot] go tothe bar and start considering taking up golfor marbles, or maybe a change of gun mightbe the answer. It is the majority group in between thatcop the ‘knocking about’ while waiting for theannouncement of ‘the cut’. And guess what; itall increases by 500% for the poor sods whoare required to shoot off for a place in theteam, whether it be for one place or four, orfive, or six places. Shoot offs are completedand final places in the team are filled andall other hopefuls now know whether theycan pack up and head for home, or pay foranother night's accommodation. Now we are at the FATIGUE part. Thesuccessful ‘team’ members quietly celebrate, each in their own way and not all, but manythink, ‘that’s it, it is over, I am in the team andimmediately start deflating. But whoa! Backthe truck up. It is far from over, because whatyou have strived for over the last three daysreaches its pinnacle to-morrow. You are notallowed to deflate yet, even though you arefeeling drained both physically and mentally. You think to yourself ‘man I would really like aday to freshen up before the Team shoot. Now we are at WHAT IS THE ANSWER. Well, the fact of the matter is, you can have thatday, doing whatever you like, simply by ourCouncillors making an adjustment to thematch order of the Nationals program.Move the 45 tgt Triples match fromTuesday to Friday allowing the threeMackintosh qualifying matches to be shotone day earlier. ie; Single Rise on Tuesday,Single Barrel on Wednesday and Points Scoreon Thursday. We are all aware of the saying, ’ ifit is not working, change it.’The teams can be announced at day'send after shooting has been completed onThursday, giving all team members the bestpart of 40 hours to wind down. They could allgo out on Friday morning and really give theTriples a good nudge, then enjoy the Trophymatch. I think it would also be a positivemove by shoot management to have twopractice traps available on the Friday, set toMackintosh settings.I can’t speak for anyone else, but amquite certain that I would be in a lot morecomfortable ‘shooting’ mood and have amore positive frame of mind at roll call timeon the Saturday morning. I do not excludethe Ladies, Vets or Juniors from the fact thatthey would certainly be experiencing exactlythe same thing at week's end, thereforeimpacting on their personal performance intheir respective teams. This is a personal opinion only, but I wouldbe hugely surprised if there were not an armyof shooters supporting the idea. What do ourtrusted Executive think when the followingtwo questions are put to them;1. How much emphasis do you place onthe winning of the Mackintosh Open TeamTrophy? [or any of the Team Trophies for thatmatter.]2. Is there a ‘fair dinkum’ and ‘true blue’reason why the NZ DTL NATIONALS programcould not be adjusted in the way I havesuggested?Kind Regards to allJim Dobson, BOPCTA ■gunshot9

In my personal opinion, it makes a huge difference whenyou have support personnel making sure things run smoothly foryou.Lucky we had a day's practice, as I was struggling to find any formon the mark. It wasn't until I asked one of the Brits to have a lookat my shooting that we changed my eye hold a bit higher that Ifound some form. You can see the targets leave the trap so earlythat you have a tendency to shoot too quickly. The grounds were like as if you were at a Motor Grand Prix. Gun,ammunition and apparel manufacturers with all their wares andthe pretty girls (eye candy) luring you into the display areas tospend up (and they knew the products). The presentation was like nothing I have been part of before withthe Fiocchi girls with the medal trays and flowers. The raising of the NZ flag was a feeling that will stay in my heartfor some time.To be World champ two years running makes this, one of the mostmemorable moments in my shooting career.Next year it will be a full on World Cup event, held in Cyprus. Let’shope I can make it there and do it again.I am looking for sponsors to make it to Cyprus next year. For those disabled shooters out there that want to be part of thisgrowing sport, you need to start shooting Olympic Trap now.Tony Brogden received his medalResults:Trap Sitting 6.-7 May 1st Anthony Brogden (New Zealand) 22, 20,23, 21, 20 = 106 + 20 = 126. 2nd Mathew Goodwin, (Great Britain)19, 21, 20, 19, 22 = 101 +18 = 119, 3rd Bruno Busti (Italy) 15, 18, 22,16, 21 = 92 + 16 = 108. Oceania Juniors (L-R) Jack Gibb, Thomas Bishop, Jacob Mackenzie, Ryan Wharton, James Cannard, Aloi SatinoFITASC OCEANIAThe Waikato Clay Target Club hosted over 160 competitors fromaround the Pacific Rim in late April for 200 of the more challengingclays most are likely to encounter. The flat terrain at WCTC proved to be little obstacle in providingthe variation required for this event. Murray Pratt and his teamcreated ample challenges over the 3 field 25 target layouts.Conditions over the three days were variable with wind, a littlerain and changing light. Australia stamped their mark firmly onthe Championship dominating across all categories.Apart from a remote release trap stopping because the electroniccounter did not go past 1999 (kind of a junior millennium bug),there were no mechanical breakdowns and the event was incidentfree from every aspect. There was a very friendly tone (evidencedby the amount of bottles that accumulated) throughout the eventand while scores posted may have disappointed some, all left thegrounds having thoroughly enjoyed themselves.Mention must be made of the supporting sponsors. FirstlyTarget Products of Timaru (a little settlement somewhere north ofDunedin) suppliers of Falcon and Fiocchi ammunition along withCCI Targets and Kilwell of Rotorua who provided the goodies forthe starter pack. Special thanks to Rob Carruthers for his eventand technical support, the new electronic score boards workedwell and were the focal point throughout the event. RIC GRIFFIN MEMORIAL SHOOTAuckland Metropolitan Clay Target ClubRic’s memorial shoot was held on Sunday 20th May with 48shooters and a number of visitors and guests attending. At thestart of the day, Mike Tarbitt, the Club President, welcomed all theshooters and guests to the shoot and then spoke about Ric and hiscontribution(s) to the club.Ric Griffin was member of the Auckland Metropolitan Clay TargetClub Inc from 1974. He was an active member of the committeeuntil his death, last year in May. At that time he also was the club'strap mechanic and trap setter. He was also a Life Member of theclub for his work and service to the club.Quite often on Sundays and the clubs shoot days and practicedays, Ric could be seen setting up the trap and sporting fields andthen refereeing the sporting squads for most of the day.Ric must have had a quiet word with the big man upstairs as theweather was still and calm throughout the day. The scores put inby the shooters showed it with a high number of possibles shot. Before the prize giving, Ric’s son and two daughters, their familiesand friends attended a short ceremony on the trap fields, wheresome of Ric’s ashes were spread on the club grounds, by his familyand friends.Lists of the overall scores by grade are listedbelow.HOA Rob Maskell AA Grade Tim Fuller (1st), Paul Hunter (2nd),Ian Hovenden (3rd=), Rob Anderson (3rd=). thames clay target club200 North South Skeet Weekend 26th & 27th May including the Rex Innis MemorialWith the dates for this weekend clashing with the AustralianSkeet Nationals the numbers were, not surprisingly, down onprevious years. We will have to look more closely at the schedulingof our 200 weekend with the Rex Innis Memorial to avoid this in thefuture. However the tight NZCTA calendar does make it difficult tofit events in at times. Normally this skeet weekend is shot aroundMay as Rex Innis was a very keen Duck and Clay shooter and thisis an appropriate time to remember him through the 100 targetMemorial event.Saturday 26th (100 North/South on behalf of TeAroha)A total of 22 shooters registered, spread throughout the grades(10 A, 7 B and 5 C grade). Round 1 saw only four possibles shotby A graders Andrew Slattery, Mike Hirtzel and Don McBeath, along with John Pilcher in B grade. After Round 2, in which therewere only two 25 scores by Murray Cameron and Brian Thomson, there were four shooters sitting on a score of 49 (Andrew Slattery,Murray Cameron, Mike Hirtzel and John Pilcher). In Round 3 there three possiblse by Murray and Brian againas well as Lindsay Stephenson, leaving Murray on 74, followedclosely by Brian, Lindsay and Mike on 73. The final round had fourpossible scores from Murray again as well as Andrew and Lindsayalong with local B grade shooter Clifford Gubb. Results– HOA Murray Cameron 99. A grade - 1st Lindsay Stephenson98, 2nd Andrew Slattery 97, 3rd Mike Hirtzel 96. B grade – 1st JohnPilcher 95, 2nd Keith Livingstone 93, 3rd Clifford Gubb 92. C grade– 1st Scott Dufty, 2nd Jim Anderton 82, 3rd Roger Swney 75.Sunday 27th (100 N/S Thames – Rex Innis Memorial)25 shooters registered for this day with 10 each in A & B gradeand five in C grade. It is pleasing to see C grade shooters come andcompete in these 100 target Skeet matches, looking to improvetheir skeet discipline. Round 1 had only three possible scores fromMark Walsh, Mike Hirtzel and Colin Heard. In Round 2 there wasonly one by Andrew Slattery, along with five on a score 24. At thehalf way stage this left Mike Hirtzel and Colin Heard on just onedown with 49 and Andrew Slattery close behind on 48.Round 3 once again had only three possibles, from MurrayColin Heard HOACameron, Paul Currie and Guy Brooks. With five others only onedown in this round, it left seven shooters within two targets of theleader Colin who was only two down on 73, followed by Andrew,Mike and Guy on 72. The final round had six possible scores whichincluded two in B grade by Yvonne Slattery and local Clifford Gubb.Once again Andrew Slattery, Murray Cameron and Guy Brooksposted 25’s but Colin Heard was too good with a final round of 25as well. This left Colin on 98 for the day, closely followed by GuyBrookes and Andrew Slattery on 97. Consistent scoring by NZCTAPresident Keith saw him take the B grade while excellent scores allday of 23’s and a 24 saw Bente Henry win the C grade.ResultsHOA winning the Rex Innis Memorial title – Colin Heard 98.A grade – 1st = Guy Brooks & Andrew Slattery 97, 3rd MurrayCameron 96. y Ron Madden for SCCdirection. If you were the official squad Ref you only forgot the cardonce!! Marauding staff on quads patrolled the fields looking for theslightest of problems, and I don’t think there was one stoppage forbroken or empty traps.Target setting is very much a subjective art, and as the weekenddeveloped this became very evident. The Waikato boys, LarryDiscombe, Darryl Groundwater, Murray Pratt, David Muggeridge andRob Carruthers had everything ready, but, as always, it is inspectedand signed off by FITASC. Their Oceania Rep V.P. Ray McFarlane hadbasically left it to the club for day 1, and as it transpires they haddone their task admirably. Everyone was keen for a good start, andat the end of the day 7 x 25’s and at the other end a 6/25 was onthe board. It was obviously a challenge for most, and it was amazingwhat the club could do on the flat ground without resorting to sillyedge on out of range targets. Day two saw some absolute magicin Sporting terms; Socrates Pilipasidis carded a 50/50 straight, something not usually seen with such challenging targets. Day 2 isnormally regarded as a ‘moving’ day and he certainly did that. It wasnot his yet though there was a ton of 24’s hard on his heels includingour own Des Coe, the leading Kiwi. The rest of us just reached intoour well-thumbed excuses book, took out our handkerchiefs, andordered another beer.Sunday, well!! 2 x 3’s (6/50) was the lowest score, with nine shootersnever reaching double figures on either field. For example Soxcarded 21/25 and 19/25, Des Coe 22 and 20. So what chance usmortals, well none really, if I was to be honest!! I think the 80 metreplus looper was the last straw for some, not that you had it once withboth barrels, but somehow appeared at the bottom of the menuboard as a report pair, B+B report. I think everyone would agree thatit was somewhat overcooked but it was the same for everyone, andby Sunday it was not worth throwing all the toys out of the cot, butjust get it done.It was a tough Sunday for all, but in the end a 185/200 is a goodwinning score at this level.Ray McFarlane basically announced that it would probably be hislast time in NZ looking after the FITASC shoots. It was time to passit on. If this indeed transpires it will be a shame for all of us as hehas been extremely influential in lifting our shooting ability and hisknowledge of traps and what they can do is unbelievable. He wasextremely helpful in helping the SCC set up our GP, and has alwaysbeen available at any time to help us with ‘technical’ FITASC matters. All in all though a great Oceania, extremely well organised andexecuted at every level, as is any shoot at Waikato. The next one willbe in 2015 with both Rotorua and S.I.S.C.S. showing an early interestin the running of this International shoot.Results:Open/Senior: Socrates Pilipasidis 185/200, Robert Hall 181/200, DesCoe 181/200, Christopher Brown 180/200, John Younger 178/200Ladies: Renae Birgan 172/200, Tara Lawrence 147/200, Maree Birgan143/200, Deanna van der Zalm 142/200Juniors: Jack Gibbs 170/200, Thomas Bishop 161/200, JacobMackenzie 160/200, Ryan Wharton 153/200Veterans: Ron Rhook 172/200, Rod Bryant 168/200 +17, Eddie Magee168/200+15, Ed Treadwell 157/200.Super Vets: Barry Jane 168/200, Alec Ceccato 158/200, John Argilla151/200, Russell Cooper 150/200 ■ATA SHOOTING AT THAMESApril 21Firstly, sincere well wishes from the NZ ATA for Don McCarthy'sspeedy recovery from minor surgery. Nelson MarlboroughProvincials 2012Well, as this is Nelson and the setting iswell inland yes you could expect a verychilly start to the day and of course it was.Driving onto the grounds in the dark, withthe grass standing up frost white while inthe Ute, it looked really lovely but of courseI had to get out.Murray Sheppard had beaten me to theclub and had the fire going already, phewthat was a very nice surprise. So with agood frost like that, we had a ripper sunnyday with just a very small breeze from timeto time, so very near perfect conditions forday one.Attendance was very good with 63 shooterbods turning out. They came from the deep, deep south and a regular from the lowerNorth Island Rob Prince with a keen crewfor the weekend. Canterbury, Westland,Marlborough, Takaka, Nightcaps, Hawke'sBay, Methven, Amberley, Ellesmere, &Wairoa all had members competing. This was the first time Nelson had hostedthe provincials under the new format (S/Rday one) and what a brilliant idea that hasturned out to be. Saturday was certainlybusy and the shoot off went till the lightwas nearly gone, yes nearly gone - cause Isaw one of my perfectly good targets landway out in the paddock that should nothave! All disciplines required shoot offs as youwould expect and this was all completed ingood time with the girls in the office doinga great job as usual getting the paperworksorted. While on the office subject I must takethe time to express our thanks to Isabel& Jacqui for the brilliant effort over theweekend and of course the weeks leadingup to this. I thought Gavin said it very well(as he usually does) by saying it makesit possible for all of us shooters to enjoyevents such as this by the commitment putinto our sport by ladies and yes of coursegents as well at some clubs, in the office.Without their very valued time wherewould we be so please take the time atyour club when next there to especiallyrecognize these people and say thanks.Prize giving was completed in good timeon Saturday and everyone headed off outinto the cold to rest up for a 9am start thatwas requested. Oh yes, Councillor SheenDouble Rise HOA Paul Blackdid a fine job taking care of the prize givingand giving Gavin a rest.Sunday June 3rdWell, we were close to a 9am start thanksto the shooters for being there nice & early.Jimmy Hannah sure knows how to get outof bed early, both days he was there atsparrows fart. The only hold up getting started was thesun, it rolled over the hill @ 9.25 and thefirst 3 quads were on the mark ready totake advantage of the brilliant first sunlightfor the day on the big orange plates. Greatsetting for good scores, background ofgreen trees, white ground underfoot & sun.Triples was of course first up but just one 49score came in, James Fulford from Hawke'sBay was pretty happy to start the day withthat score.Points Score saw three possibles and a fewon that unfortunate 74. Single Barrel wasunderway by approx. 1.30pm and saw justtwo possibles, well shot Boston and Bradthat’s a great way to finish the weekend. From the club's point of view a verysuccessful weekend with just one brokenspring the only trap problem so there’s abig tick again for the team at CanterburyTraps. The slightly more distressing problem thathappened very early on Saturday morningwas a blown pole fuse on our incomingpower line that meant a quick call to thepower supplier; thankfully they were onsite within 45 minutes and all started ontime with no interruption.Cheers to all of the traveling shooters, alot of regular faces in attendance and verygood to see a few new shooters comeand enjoy the weekend in sunny Nelson.Shooting events are made easy to run withorganized and helpful shooters and you allfit that description well.So now just like to finish up by thankingour own small team of workers in the fieldthat were at the club early to see the trapsset and kept topped up throughout theweekend. Emily and Neil were hard at it inthe kitchen all weekend and have againdone a great job. northland ProvincialsThe winterless North finally producedtwo consecutive days of good weatherfor this year’s Northland Provincials.Saturday dawned bright and fair with clear skies and verylittle wind. The targets were set and all that was required at 9:30am were the shooters. Following the 10am rush at the office, which Toni and Annette took in their stride, the skeet was finallyunderway.Don McBeath was heard to say that he wanted to win the skeetwhich he had never done before and, following a shoot off, he gothis wish with HOA. Single Rise was the final event of the day with thenumber of possibles shot causing the shoot offs to be completedfirst thing Sunday morning. So following the 8:30am start, thefrost had gone by this time but the temperature was only a fewdegrees higher, the remaining seven shooters upped the pressureand quickly the numbers reduced leaving Colin Waghorn andGrant Nilsson fighting for the honour of their respective islands.By 9:15 the final shot had been fired and congratulations were dueto Grant Nilsson, HOA Single Rise.Triples, Point Score and Single Barrel were also fiercelycontested in the shoot offs with Colin Waghorn taking HOA Triplesand Single Barrel and Deano Horn taking HOA in Point Score.Over the two days Ron Thompson acted as Shooters' Rep andalso donned his alternate hat as Auckland Examiner for the OfficialReferees and set up a classroom in one corner of the clubrooms. He reported that he had eight students over the two days, therewere no possibles with all questions correct but he was notexpecting any failures.Triples HOA: Colin Waghorn. eferees’ cornerBy Blue FreemanAnother edition of Referees' Corner is due next weekand I’m only now getting replies from thelast edition. Never mind, there are a fewthings we need to get aired so let’s get intoit.Protests. There still seems to be somemisunderstanding out there still regarding protests.Under no circumstances should shoot managemententertain any level of protest regarding the result of shoton a regular target. If a shooter misses with his first shot andopens his gun, the target is lost: - Dry your eyes Princess - It’s allover. The referee has the final say. Shooters may protest referees'interpretation of the rules only. So please club management, let’shave no more protests regarding a hit or missed target. If you areappointing referees from previous squads, please make sure theyhave enough knowledge to do the shooters justice.Skeet Shoot-Offs. Have a shufti at rule 4-34a. “If two ormore competitors miss the same target, a new shoot-off roundshall be commenced, where necessary” In this case, “wherenecessary” refers to whether the two or more shooters are “In themoney” so to speak and it is necessary to determine a rankingbetween them. If they are the first two out of a ten way shoot-off,it is unnecessary to rank those shooters. If however they are thelast two in a shoot-off, that shoot-off has resulted in a tie and anew shoot-off shall be started to determine the winner. Shoot offsare 25 targets per round in skeet, and begin at station 1. Repeattargets are not shot in individual first miss out shoot-offs, exceptas the 25th target after 24 breaks have been recorded. Comparethis rule with rule 4-36 for Skeet team shoot-offs.DTL Shoot-Offs. The same rules apply as above. A new shootoffround (see rule 4-41 for definition of a round) is started iftwo or more shooters miss the same target and it is necessary todetermine a ranking between those shooters.Skeet rule changes from NSSA: The NSSA executiverecently went through their skeet rules and made a numberof changes. Here are the rules changes as they impact NZCTAregulations.(1) Mandatory positions for referees while using Voice release(VR) systems. Add Rule 6-26 g) “Exception 2: While a referee muststand as close as possible to the mandatory positions detailedabove, it is acceptable for a referee using a Voice Release Systemto slightly adjust his/her position to meet the needs of either theshooter or the Voice Release System without causing interferencewith the shooter or the squad”.(2) Time fault: Deliberate delay; Rule 6-50f: This is a tough rule topolice, but it is to prevent time wasting on the mark. Instead of 15seconds, a shooter now has 10 seconds to call for a target.(3) Malfunction between shots on doubles. All that drama about“nothing established” if you have hit the first target etc. is now outthe door. Rules 6-54 and rule 6-65b: In both cases, if an allowable*malfunction has occurred between shots on doubles, the refereewill score the results of the first shot and a proof doubles will beshot to establish the second shot result.Note.* The word allowable here refers tothe number of malfunctions permitted ina round. Two gun malfunctions and twoammo malfunctions. If the malfunction isexcessive, the second target will be “lost” and aproof double will not be shot.NZCTA Rule Clarifications: We have also added acouple of explanatory rules which some people felt unnecessary, but I can assure them they are necessary to set people's mind atrest, settle differences of opinion and to clarify intent.Amend Rule 3.01 h: Add the following sentence to the existingrule: Where an unfinished match or a shoot-off is to continuethe next day, no rule-off is to take place until after the match iscompleted or until shooters concerned have finished the shootoff.(Some clubs felt their duty was to rule off each night evenwhen a shoot-off was unfinished).Amend Rule 3.13 d) A new sporting shooter to start at 59%.(This was my oversight. Council amended the grades at thesporting shooters' request, but overlooked the impact on startinggrade).Amend Rule 2.69 r): Willoughby Norrie Trophy: Add word “Open”between New Zealand and Team. (This is to ensure that the awardis only open to those 25 shooters who qualify to be in the openMackintosh team. In days gone by, there was only one team andthis proviso was unnecessary. Now we have ladies, Juniors andveterans as well as the Open team).Add new rule 5-17 e): In Points Score events, each shooter willvisit each lane once only, shooting an equal number of targets oneach of the five lanes. After the appropriate number of targetshas been shot on each lane by all shooters, the referee will call“Change”, and the shooters will then move to the next lane.(Clarification of progress across lanes for points score matches ofless than 25 targets).Add new rule 4-03 c) iii: If the shooter fires at an alleged “slow” or“quick” pull before the referee has declared it “No Target”, the resultof the shot is to be scored. (This places this rule in the appropriatesection of the rules).Amend rule 5-40: Delete the existing rule 5-40. Replace with “Forexpediency when using automatic voice release equipment, clubsare to adopt the following process: Squads to be a maximum of fiveshooters, and each shooter will visit each lane once only, shootingan equal number of targets on each of the five lanes. After theappropriate number of targets has been shot on each lane by allshooters, the referee will call “Change”, and the shooters will moveto the next lane, adjusting the position of the microphones to aposition appropriate to their shooting mark”. (For HBD matchesto enable voice release rather than manual release. Note that if avoice release handpiece is used to manually release targets, thehuman reaction time delay is still generated within the device. This makes all targets emerge slower than if on voice). These amendments will be in the rule book master on the website34 gunshot

y the time this Gunshot is printed. Also on the website is adocument called “rule book errata” which lists all the amendmentsto the current version. Referees will find it most handy to haveavailable- as should club management. Remember that thewebsite rules are the most up to date rules and over-ride theNovember 2010 printed version.Amended test questions: Of course these rule and rulebookamendments have brought about changes to the refereeexamination, and another paper will be provided to all of thereferees' examiners before this issue of Gunshot reaches your mailboxes. I should send the updated paper to Ned Kelland down inAlexandra. Ned keeps me honest and makes sure the rule bookmeans what it says, and says what it means. So does Jim Dobsonin Te Puke for that matter. Here is one from the Skeet T/F that seems to need someexplanation: A protest involving scoring of target(s), if filedimmediately on the station. Shall require a second shot to be firedand results recorded and noted as a protest. The protest shallproceed in the prescribed manner. True or false?Scenario: A shooter gets a slightly slow pull on station hightwo, but shoots at the target and misses. The referee calls “lost –Repeat”, and the shooter complains that the target was the resultof a slow pull and wants a “no target”. He formally states his protestto the referee. The referee is quite right in his call, and to change his call wouldbe a blunder. He is not to hold up the squad and cannot go andask for advice, so he marks the target as lost and asks the shooterto shoot his repeat target and then he asks the shooter to shootthe target again – with this result scored as a protest. That is, if theprotest is upheld by the shoot management, the protest targetwould become the result for High 2. At the end of the round, ifthe shooter is all on, he would shoot a second low 8, so that if theprotest is upheld, there is a complete score for the round and theshooter doesn’t have to go out and shoot one or two targets togenerate a score for the scoreboard. So the answer is “True”.The same principle should be applied to DTL as well. Mark thetarget as lost, and shoot another target in case the protest isupheld. If the shooter does not actually go ahead with his protest, the second target is not counted. That way the squad is not heldup, the shooter hasn’t “bullied” the referee to change his call, andthe shooter can focus on shooting targets with the knowledge thathis protest will be given the fairest hearing by shoot managementafter the round. …………and they all lived happily ever after.New Grounds: NZCTA President Keith Livingstone and I paid avisit to the new Bay of Plenty Clay Target Club grounds way upthe back behind Pyes Pa last month. We had been invited to havea look at the new layouts and confirm the measurements andtolerances were all in accordance with the rules. No surprise thateverything is well under control of the project manager, GrantCastles. The earthworks have been huge! They’ve turned a couple of hillsupside down and dropped them into a pair of appropriate sizedgullies and then smoothed the tops over. They now have a cleararea with a great backdrop to shoot against, and have room forexpansion into the next century. Drains have been installed toallow for future growth, the clubrooms have been relocated fromdown Te Puke way and are being upgraded with considerationfor staff and shooters. Grant is building everything to the latestspecifications, and his attention to detail is noteworthy: theresults are going to be fantastic. Great effort BoP Clay Target Club, magnificent effort Grant Castles!New Referees: With Queens Birthday behind us now, theweather will get less agreeable to everyone. This is when thetrue mettle of the referees will show. While their gumboots arefilling with rain, or their face has frozen because a stiff southerlyis blowing straight at them, they are still out there on the markmaking a level playing field for everyone. To all those who havetaken the steps to be measured for their ability to referee, thankyou very much. It’s easy to take from the sport, but those whomake the effort to put something back in are true sportsmen.Seven more referees have sat and passed the examinations thispast couple of months. They are John Beaver, Bruce Parkin andScott Verran, Yvonne Slattery, Andrew Slattery and Selwyn Gates.Welcome aboard everyone and thanks for your time and energy.Trevor Manson from the Southland Club has also decided tocontinue giving back to the sport and has qualified as a refereeand referees' examiner to assist in the wide expanses of Southland.Trevor and his wife Jan have given much to the sport over theyears, and they just keep doing it! Thanks again Trevor.Well it's next week already and Adrienne has sent one of her emailsasking where the article is, so I must sign off here for this issue.Happy and safe shooting; - Please check your guns and yourscores.Thank you shooters. Canterburry Earthquake AppealLast year certain individuals and clubs generously donated tothe NZCTA to show their support to fellow members during theheight of the recent earthquakes that besieged the Canterburyregion. The funds that were donated to the NZCTA have been heldwhile we access who would be the most deserving recipientsof this. We have asked all the local clubs to advise us of any oftheir members who were severely disadvantaged by the recentearthquakes. Based on the names that have come back from thelocal clubs, the NZCTA Council has now moved to pay this fundout to those on this list, less 10% which we will hold for a 12 monthperiod then disburse to those who are currently being paid, if nonew recipients come to light. On behalf of the NZCTA Executive, thank you to those thatcontributed in any way to the fund that shows other membersthroughout the country care about their fellow shooters.MARGARET COOK MEMORIALSHIELD & H H MORRIS MEMORIALSHIELD TEAMS SHOOTHOSTED BY WOODVILLE CLAY TARGET CLUB INC29 JULY 2012 9.00AM STARTEvent 1Event 2Event 325 Target Single Rise.Compulsory $2 graded sweep 15M A, B & C GradesMargaret Cook Memorial Shield25 Target Points Score 15M A, B & C GradesComp $2 graded sweep & Opt $5 ungraded sweepH.H.Morris Memorial Shield30 Target Single Rise. continued from page 22illusory. In the case of the football coach'sdecision, the "obvious" decision was topunt, but the statistical (and thereforelogical) decision was counter-intuitive. Thechance of winning was higher with thefourth and inches conversion. The reason we make decisions this wayis we are not rational creatures. We don'tlook at the statistical advantages if thereis a chance for loss. We are biased towardbeing safe. We don't react to uncertaintywith a cold look at the probabilities;instead, we rely on gut feeling and tradition, which more often than not lead us astray.Uncertainty is a fact of life in competitiveshooting. While the parameters of trap andskeet are well-known and the course of firefairly easy shot-to-shot, the introduction ofmatch stress adds a lot of uncertainty. Inaddition, once a certain level of comfort isreached, most shooters tend to stay there. This safe harbor is preferred to taking achance on learning a new technique ormaking a major change that requires anew commitment because of the possiblechance of significant loss. The bottom line is most shooters aresatisfied overall with their situation in acompetition, even though they may desireto improve. The drive to excel is counteredby the need to be safe. This is true eventhough, with enough training and practice,a large number of shooters could shootvery good scores.Of course, being "risk-adverse" is nottrue of all shooters. The very best shootersnot only have an insane amount of talent, they are driven to find the best possibleway to shoot and win. They will dowhatever it takes to win, even if it meanschanging from what they were taughtto a relatively unproven (and thereforeuncertain) technique. At times, this maymean a setback, but if that happens, theyjust reload.Studies show most people are riskaversive. There is a well-known story ineconomic circles concerning the NobelPrize winner Harry Markowitz, whoinvented the field of investment portfoliotheory. His work showed a good investor isbetter off taking a certain amount of risk, and he was able to design calculations thatlead to an optimal mix of stocks and bonds.Yet, when he had to make the decision forhimself, he went with the old wisdom oflow-interest bonds. Here was an economist who knew theright things to do but failed to do them! Isuspect the difference was Harry Markowitzwas not an investor himself but a theorist. He was not mentally suited to look at riskas an asset the way top competitors in anyfield are. His retirement funds were tooprecious to him to be put at risk. He wastoo afraid of loss and uncertainty."A ship is safein harbor, butthat's not whatships are for"- William SheddMany shooters are risk-aversive. Theyrise to a level of competence and staythere. They have no desire to give up thisposition in an effort to improve. Part of thisis reaching their talent level. It is rare for anelite-level shooter to have "average" talent,so they have an advantage right off the bat.And part of it has to do with not havingthe resources or time to take the neededchances. There is certainly nothing wrong withthis. Maximizing ability is a very difficulttask that interferes with a lot of otherthings in life. If you are happy at what youdo shooting, that probably counts for morethan any lower probability of success and,as Harry Markowitz readily admitted, "Myintention was to minimize my future regret." But in the shotgun sports, reachingan elite level is possible for many moreshooters than actually do it.How do you reach the top and becomeless risk-aversive? It's not easy. If you havea lot of talent, you start off at a higher levelafter some training and experience. Formany of the top shooters, this was highenough to see the peak and want to reachit. Many of the top shooters also startedout early in life when being risk-aversiveis not so important. They learned takingchances is one of the ways to be successfuland don't suffer the consequences a lossmight bring a more experienced shooter. Ayoung shooter may stumble, but he or shecan bounce right back. The lesson learnedis mistakes yield answers to problems andare not to be viewed as a loss if they occur. Thus, a talented youngster learns lemonsare the main ingredient of lemonade, notthat they are sour and to be avoided.Of course, many of us don't have theluxury of growing up as a talented youthwho is destined for stardom. Most of usstart out as adults and have to learn in amore brute-force manner. A good coach,a well-fit gun and a lot of practice thatslowly builds a base of competence isextremely important. Desire to performwell can overcome any risk-averse feelingswe might have, and learning to use all ourmental tools is an absolute. Just because itmay be harder to reach goals doesn't meanwe can't do it, it's just harder. The trick is to understand uncertainty isnot bad, it is opportunity. If something doesnot go well, try another approach. The ideais you are trying to reach a goal, and any"failure" is just a dead end. The only thingyou lose is time. You gain knowledge fromyour error and then don't repeat it. Youfind what works and head in that direction.Score is not important, performance is.It is a hard lesson to learn. Adults arehard-wired to be risk-aversive, even insituations like ours where no real riskoccurs other than those in our heads. Byunderstanding you are better off taking achance to advance, a chance that can bereversed with time and effort, you will findyou are capable of reaching almost anygoal in the shotgun sports. ■Article by courtesy of Shotgun SportsMagazine44 gunshot

The Feng Shui of Shootingby Michael J. Keyes, M.D.One aspect of shooting that isoften mentioned but rarely dealtwith is the venues in which weshoot. When I proposed myshooting diary a few yearsago I included a rating forthe shooting venue because Ithought it was important, but Ididn't exactly know why.The concept that peopleare more comfortable in somesurroundings than others is nota new idea. Feng Shui, the Chinesephilosophy of environment, hassupposedly been around for over 3500years and is very popular in the UnitedStates in a simplified form. Manipulation ofpackaging and form has been a staple ofmarketing for years, and clothes designersbet their offerings will sell because theyare appealing to women and men who feelbetter when they wear the designs. And so it is with shooting venues. Eachof us has a favorite and, more important,a least-favorite place to shoot our favoritesport. For some of us, it is the home field, with its familiarity and predictability weprefer when we are in a stressful situation. For others, it may be a nationally knownmatch site that has spectacular viewsor buildings. Still others just like a placebecause they are able to shoot well thereand have no specific reason that comesto mind as to why that should happen. Ifwe are comfortable in our surroundings, things seem to go better for us.If I told you these sites are imbued with"qi" and represent the "perfect spot" in timeand space, I suspect you would probablynot take me very seriously. Yet, theseconcepts have some scientific validity, butnot in the way most people expect. The idea there are perfect surroundingsis not just an ancient Chinese philosophy. Many cultures have noted there areimprovements in buildings and groundsthat soothe the soul. The ancient Greeksstated there was a "golden proportion"in buildings such as the Partheon thatwas pleasing to the eye (that ratio was1:1.61803398874989, approximately, ifyou are interested). This observation andthe number popped up time and again inmathematics and art in the Renaissanceand other times in history. It has beenobserved in nature, music, industrialdesign and even finance representing theoptimal shape or form in those fields. The idea of the environment affectingyour performance is not limited toarchitecture and landscaping. Morerecently, there has been a lot of work on aconcept called "cross sensory perception."In 2000, an experiment at Caltechchallenged the assumption our sensesare separate entities that rarely interact inany meaningful way when they showedsubjects who were shown a brief flash oflight perceived it as two flashes if twoquick tones were played at the sametime. The same thing occurred when theresearchers touched the skin of the subjecttwice during the flash. The experimentshowed that sight could be alteredby sound or touch. These senses weresomehow connected.Marketing experts have known thisfor some time. Soft drink manufacturersfound out if you changed the color of acan to red, customers perceived the tasteof the drink as sweeter. Coca-Cola foundwhen they offered their product in a whitecan people thought they had changedthe formula. (Why they did this more thanonce is beyond me, but they did.) As theexperiments proceeded, it was found theinteraction of senses was the norm, not theexception. One of my partners, Derold Treffert M.D.,is an expert on savants, people with specialskills, such as instant calculationor photographic memories. Heintroduced me to a savant withSynesthesia, a neurologicalcondition in which one sense isalso experienced as a secondsense. In this case, it was musicas colors. It turns out 1 in 23people have this gift in someform ,or another. I bring this uponly to show that even the mostextreme versions of cross-sensoryperception are fairly common. So,why is this important in shooting?Target shooting is a sport in whichyou try to decrease the number ofvariables as much as possible. One of theconfounding factors is match pressure, which I talk about in almost every column.Match pressure changes our perceptionsby adding a level of fear and uncertainty tothe process, and this causes a lot of changeswe don't necessarily want or need. Thereare many ways to manage match pressureand even turn it to our advantage, but inorder for these methods to work well, wehave to be on top of the other aspects ofshooting, such as technique and fitness.Even then, match pressure has a significanteffect on the process of trying to be perfect, and we have to learn to live with it. Part ofthis training is to turn the whole process ofshooting a target into a single experiencethat has very few parts. Instead of shootingthe target as a five-part planned action, weintegrate them into one smooth shot, withthe only subjective aspect being our focuson the target. This means we use many ofour senses to shoot a target (sight, sound, kinesthetic sense, movement, feel andsmell, at the very least), and we have to doit consistently.Match stress alters our senses. It makesour hearing and sight more efficient, our kinesthetic sense is sharper dueto increased alertness, and even smellis affected. Any change in our routine, venue, equipment or ammunition canalso alter our shooting. Take the exampleof ammunition. For many years, Olympicshotgunning had a range of charges andshot that could be used in competition, but this changed a while back whenthe cost of shells kept going up and thegunshot 45

European and Asian shooters found it toocostly to practice. (At least this is what Iwas told was the reason.) Olympic shootershad to start using lighter loads in order tocompete. Logic and mathematics told usfewer pellets would reach the target andthis would diminish the odds of breakingthe target. Yet, average scores and recordswent up after this change.I am not sure why this happened. Thereis no simple answer that fits. (The simpleanswer is it should not have happened.)But it is likely at least two things occurred:Shooters trained harder because they knewthe lighter loads gave them less leeway inhitting the target and, for some reason, thedecrease in recoil may have made shootingin competition easier, not harder. Bothof these ideas are compatible with theconcept of cross-sensory perception.Harder training translates into morefocus, more efficient use of analysis andless "noise" in the system. In turn, shootersare less distracted while competing andhave fewer novel sensory inputs to dealwith.Part of international training programs isto expose young shooters to as many newvenues as possible in order to inoculatethem from novel experiences. Anotherpart of this train ing is to settle very earlyon such variables as gun fit, ammunition, clothing, glasses and any other equipmentthe shooter may need. A lot of energy goesinto developing technique, which is theprimary part of shooting that defines yoursensory input. Mental training helps to dealwith match pressure and diminishes theeffects of stress on the senses. Shootingin matches is invaluable for learning toaccommodate those changes that occur inspite of training, fitness and technique. The result is what scientists call a"Multi-Sensory Perceptual Object" (MSPO),which is the integration of all the sensoryinput governed by a single stimulus -inthis case, the target. Unknown signalswill be filtered out in this scenario dueto the association of the target with theshooting movement and (we hope) a goodperformance. Training attempts to not onlyisolate those perceptions that help theshooter but to modify the sensory inputneeded to successfully hit the target everytime. This means learning to eliminate thenegative and placing most of the actionin the subconscious. Any contradictorysensory information has to be suppressedduring the shot or it will generate negativeemotions. Multi-sensory research hasshown successful integration of the sensesincludes defining what is important, weeding out the unimportant sensoryinput (the background) and including onlythe relevant sensory information. This isdone by using an "expert system" thathelps define what is important and whatis not (think coach). The key, like anythingelse, is smart hard work.Modern neuroscience keeps showingus why certain things work in competitionshooting. Most of the time, the scientistsmanage to verify what we already know, but often -as in this case- we learn we haveto be more focused and work harder if wewant to improve to the point of perfection.Learning to integrate our senses is one ofthese factors most of us didn't even knowwe had, much less have to learn to workwith the concept. ■Article by courtesy of Shotgun SportsMagazine10 years ago the USA had Steve Jobs, Bob Hope and Johnny Cash. Now they have no Jobs, no Hope and no Cash.46 gunshot
