PRESIDENT’S REPORTWelcome to my first officialPresident’s column following myappointment as President in March2010.I have enjoyed an easy ride into takingup the position as President. Trevor hasmade it an easy transition to take overthe reins. I had the opportunity at our lastExecutive meeting to personally thankhim in recognition of his service to themembership, and present him with a “PastPresidents” lapel badge. Trevor forms partof the NZCTA Council in his capacity as PastPresident for the remainder of the year.In my acceptance speech at the NZCTAAGM, I focused on greater Governanceand fewer Management issues being dealtwith by the Executive in the future and theinvolvement of the full membership beingtaken into account, via sub-committees,in the future decision making process andpathway the NZCTA would follow into thefuture. To this end, at our last Executivemeeting, Adrienne’s designation waschanged to “Executive Officer“ toreflect Adrienne’s changing role anddelegated responsibilities, to deal withall Management issues, and free up theExecutive to deal with Governance of theNZCTA moving forward.Consequently the Chairpersons of theNZCTA sub-Committees (school, ISSF, andSporting) attended their first Executivemeeting on the evening prior, and reportedto the full NZCTA Executive the followingmorning at 8am.Many outstanding issues were addressedat this new meeting format, and everybodyfelt it was very worthwhile and a major stepforward in involving sub-committees in thedecision making process. It was recognisedthat any member can now bring freshideas to move the sport forward, in theirparticular discipline, by bringing it to thesub-committees’ attention, and possiblediscussion at Executive level. (Members canrefer to the appropriate contact personnelin the front Executive page of Gunshot orvia the Website.)Recently George Johnston and I hada meeting with a director from “Bike NZ”in Auckland, with a view to gaining morebenefits to our membership, throughpossible restructuring of the NZCTA intoone organisation, of all the Shootingdisciplines, called “Shooting NZ”. Thisidea has been tried twice before, but has never gained traction toproceed. The benefits to membersof the NZCTA are immense if a futureorganisation under one umbrellaemerges from the darkness, with access to GovernmentAgency funding and futuresports development assistance.Members will be familiar withother organisations like Bike NZ,Swimming NZ, Bowls NZ, etc.Following on from extensivediscussion at NZCTA Executivelevel, authority was granted tofloat the idea at an NZSF Symposium heldthe same weekend. The NZCTA Executive floated theidea to the other disciplines of the NZSF(Pistol, Rifle, and Target Shooting NZ) tosuggest exploring the possibility under theumbrella of the NZSF, to form a workingparty of delegates from each discipline. The NZCTA was most emphatic thatchange had to come from the top downand would only be proceeded with if therewere extensive tangible benefits to ourmembers and change would only evolveunder the umbrella of the NZ ShootingFederation as the Government Agencyvehicle for future funding.I will keep everybody informed ofany developments in the future via thiscolumn.Members should familiarise themselveswith the contents of the “Notice to all Clubs”memorandum to review other changesadopted at the last Executive Meeting. There have been some very notablerecent achievements by NZCTA membersof late. Following on from the successfulNZ Glenn Cup team triumphing overAustralia and retaining the trophy at theNZ DTL National Championships, theNZ Skeet Glenn Trophy team has alsosucceeded at the recent Australian NationalChampionships in Wagga. It has been many years (1982) since NZhas held both Glenn Trophies together, and this is attributable to the quality of theselections of our competitive Teams, thoseindividual skills and the organisation of oursport in general. There were other notable individualachievements recently also at theAustralian Skeet Nationals, with TonyTruss winning the Australian NationalSkeet Championship. This follows on fromMiles Browne-Cole winning the AustralianTrench Championship earlier in the Yearand Boston Walker winning the AustralianSingle Barrel Championship. No wonderthe Australian ACTA President told meto leave his trophy cabinet alone, whenI mentioned, the NZCTA Members wereinterested in all the trophies, but wouldleave the stuffed wallaby behind! Thefriendly banter the members of our twogreat countries enjoy with each other isalways very enjoyable, especially when weare on top!A great deal of work has been completedby both the NZCTA and NZSF in getting to astage where athletes have been nominatedfor the forthcoming CommonwealthGames in India. All relevant informationhas been forwarded to the NZOC by theNZSF, and the NZOC Selectors will makethe final decisions for nomination. I amconfident we have done everything wecan to support our athletes to gain futuresuccess. All members wish the successfulnominated athletes every success in thefuture to do our sport proud, and follow inGraeme Ede’s footsteps.Good shooting and above all else havefun!Keith LivingstoneCover photograph: The New Zealand teamthat recaptured the Glenn Trophy at theAustralian Skeet National Championshipsat Wagga Wagga, Australia. SPORTING CLAY OCEANIASixteen N.Z. shooters made it toRenmark-Berri (2½ hrs North-Eastfrom Adelaide) for the 22nd OceaniaSporting Clay tournament.NZ Junior Team takes 2nd placeNew Zealand Open Team 2ndNZ Super Veterans team takes 2nd placeFortunately to reach Renmark you haveto travel through (well near it anyway)the famous Barossa Valley and some of ustook full advantage of the wine tours andtasting for a few days preceding the event. Two soft practice fields, set purposely totrap the unwary, were set up for Friday withcompetition commencing on Saturday forthree days. The set up was eight (old style)par cours each one of 25 targets from fourshooting stands, Saturday and Sunday youshot three par cours each day, and Mondaytwo, totalling 200 targets. The openingceremony was a little disappointing forus as everyone of us was in No.1’s (severalwearing poppies as a mark of respectfor ANZAC weekend, appreciated bysome Aussies). After the superb Maoriwelcome and challenge in Rotorua forthe last Oceania, we thought the Aussieswould try to top that, no flags of nations,no national anthems and as is normal asmall gift to shooters was missing. Onecan only imagine they were still gettingover the incredible efforts they had put infor the World Champs last year and werestill recovering from all that work. On theother hand though they threw all mannerof targets at us and being a relatively flatground, employed towers, cherry pickers, high stands and speed. One stand had a 20meter cherry picker which was 76 metersfrom the stand, the target was on edgeand driven down landing 50 odd meters toyour right. Probably a 60 meter plus target. Most of the guys seemed to handle it ok,shooting three or four out of the menu. Ithink it was the ‘biggest’ target there, butevery trap was either tilted over, had thespring wound right up or had the targetsdoing a couple of things in the air, makingthem very tricky and hard to read. As usualwe were made to feel very welcome withthe usual banter and bull…. filling up thedown time, catering and refreshmentswere up to the normal Aussie standardand most probably put on a pound or two.Two of the N.Z. shooters departed from thenorm this year and had camper vans, oneunfortunately seemed to be in all sorts ofstrife most of the time, and poor Ian Swalehad erected his awning only to have the10 gunshot

CHAMPIONSHIPSwind come up and blow it over the roofof the camper while still attached at oneend! At one stage Gordon MacPhee wasin fits of laughter, struggling to tell theassembled multitudes what he had seen, and I’m not totally sure of the order, butIan and Richard Foster standing on theshoulders of the other trying to get in thecamper window. Yes the keys were lockedinside!! Gordon was just a bit slow to gethis camera out! On the social front some ofus had found, on our last visit to Renmark,a stunning little restaurant right in themiddle of the bush, the Mallee Fowl, oldwooden tables, rabbit traps holding tablenumbers. Just ask Ray McFarlane how realthey were as he, while trying to set one toshow a couple of townies, sprung it on histhumb!! The place was full of Australianoutback memorabilia stuck in every sparespace, the food, cooked on a huge hotplateand grill in the middle of the restaurant, was superb. Some of us went for a secondnight when the Aussies booked it out and itseemed to become an engagement partyfor Carla Battistella and Jeff Zammitt. Jeffwho incidentally on talking to Ray Bishopabout duck shooting, immediately bookeda ticket to N.Z. for opening weekend. Theywere in my squad and what a great couple,Carla has been following Jeff around for awhile and has now started shooting, evenshooting a 20/25 which a lot of experiencedshooters couldn’t match.David Alley and Thomas Bishop weretop New Zealanders home overall eachon 164/200, followed by our other twojuniors, James Canard and James Rastick.Thomas Bishop, only a young junior withmany more years before moving intoseniors, is making junior sporting shootingvery healthy indeed. Add to that the twoJames’s gaining international experience, things are looking good. They wereshooting well, and finished on 157/200 apiece, and what a thrill it was to see thetwo boys foot it on those big shoot offtargets in front of an appreciative gallery.Sox Pilipasidis won the event on 183;current World FITASC Champion DamienBirgan was second one target behind on182. In other classes, juniors took 2nd, 3rd.and 4th. Thomas Bishop second outrightand James Rastrick over James Canard ina shoot off. Graham Brown (148/200) wonSuper Vets with Gordon MacPhee 3rd.(141/200)In the teams New Zealand took silverin all the categories except Ladies wherewe disappointingly didn’t field a team. The open and Veterans teams, I must saywere convincingly beaten, some might saythrashed, but our Junior team was beatenby 1 target 486/487, and the old super vetstoo by 1 target 417/418 a very good effort, showing the Aussies had a real fight for theclean sweep. This shoot was also the final of theOceania Cup; it’s a culmination of theOceania tournament points plus oneof the two Grand Prix that were held inGeelong and Alexandra. In the SeniorsDamien Birgan was first, followed by SoxPilipasidis then Chris Brown, Renae Birganwon ladies, Juniors was won by youngAussie Paul Adams with N.Z.ers ThomasBishop second and James Rastick third. InVets we managed a 15th with Allen Alley,19th Ron Madden and 20th. Neil Winsloe, room for improvement I think. Super Vetsfared better with Ray McFarlane 1st, BryanRafferty (Aust) 2nd and our own GrahamBrown 3rd with Gordon MacPhee 4th.Richard Foster 5th. and Ian Swale 7th.We are hoping that people get onboard and try for these International cupsas there is plenty of opportunity to shootthe qualifying matches. Remember youonly need to shoot two of the three, onlyone, the Oceania being compulsory. One isalways held in Geelong, next year’s Oceaniais due to be held in New Caledonia aroundEaster and our Grand Prix, hopefully inMarch and being hosted by Wanganui.Ron Madden for the Sporting Committee.NZ Veterans team takes 2nd place (L-R) Ron Madden, Ian Swale, Neil WinsloeSuper Veterans winner Graham Brown with Gordon MacPhee 3rdgunshot 11

Aussie Skeet champsEleven New Zealand shooters attended the 2010Australian Skeet National Championships at Wagga. The week’s events were conducted in fine, calm, late autumnweather. Each day started with a “black frost” and then blue skydays. Some Aussies commented it was the best weather everexperienced for the Skeet Nationals. For the Kiwis, the highlight of the week came on Friday -National Skeet Championship day. Three possible went into theshoot off after the 100 target match. At station 4 in the first shootoff round, Tony Truss from Rotorua shot the station clean, placingall the pressure on the only other shooter left in the shoot off -Leigh Roberts of Australia. Leigh missed his low target on stationfour handing Tony Truss the National Australian Skeet title. Thiswas a fantastic achievement and Tony’s performance was anotherexample of his cool and calm shooting despite the high pressurecircumstances. The Aussie crowd was silenced.Immediately following Tony’s win, the Australia vs NewZealand Glenn Trophy event was held. Tony’s shoot off win set theatmosphere for this teams event with the Aussie team strugglingto keep composure and the Kiwi team pushing along with a goodscore. The end result was a New Zealand victory by seven targetswith Tony and Dave Da Silva leading the Kiwis home with possible50s in the Glenn Trophy match. The other NZ team scores wereClark Pirie (49), Kelvin Gutsell (48) and Ray Everett (46). This victorywas an extremely pleasing result after losing the Glenn Trophy toAustralia at the NZ Skeet Nationals in November 2009.Continued on page 44Tony Truss Australian Skeet Championship winnerKelvin Gutsell winner 28g eventgunshot 13

It is good to seethe students coming to the shoot as well as some new shootersand thanks to all for your support of the club.I’m afraid I have to apologize for no photos. I down loaded themonto the computer and thought they were in my programme; hitthe format button to clear the camera for the reunion and nowfind they are not in my Thornton folder. SUPER 8SECONDARY SCHOOLS COMPETITIONPALMERSTON NORTHGUN CLUB21 MAY 2010Listening to the rain pounding the roofon Thursday night gave me visions of atempest of biblical proportions – nothingparticularly unusual for the Manawatu!Luckily Friday morning dawned almostclear and, unbelievably, still. Maybe Scottyhad beamed me somewhere else?Unfortunately, New Plymouth,Gisborne and Rotorua were unable tofield teams. Luckily the remaining teams,Napier, Hastings, Tauranga, Hamilton andPalmerston North Boys High Schools areall extremely competitive providing for astrong competition.Nine possible 20/20 scores were postedin the single rise, 5 of them by PalmerstonNorth Boys High School getting themoff to a flying start. Unfortunately thebrilliance apparent in the single rise wasdevastatingly absent in the single barrelevent allowing Tauranga and Hamiltontogether to take the lead by 1 point goinginto the points score event.A well contested points score eventresulted in Tauranga and Hamilton tied on458/500 followed closely by PalmerstonNorth on 455/500. Napier and Hastingswere not far behind. Shoot offs consistedof 5 single rise, 5 single barrel and 5 pointsscore. In keeping with the spirited natureof the event Tauranga managed to headHamilton off by just 1 point. There were 3 shooters tied for HighGun – Levi Bent (Tauranga), CameronMuggeridge (Hamilton) and CallumBeattie (Palmerston North). Cameron tooka second shot in the points score leavingLevi and Callum to shoot the first 15 SR/SB/PS clean. Levi needed a second shoton his 28th target leaving Callum to shootthe last 2 targets clean. It is a credit to theshooters to see a shoot off end without atarget being missed!Congratulations to Team winnersTauranga 458/500. Scott Verran, LeviBent, Brody Clark, Jacob Samuel & AaronBaxendine. WorldEnglishDon’t miss this Qualifying EventWith preparations for the Worlds well underway, it is also time tolet you all know that TVDA will be hosting the sole team selectionqualifying event for the World English Sporting Championships sodon’t miss out on this chance to shoot this excellent event. This qualifying event will form part of the TVDA 2 Day Classicand will be hosted the same weekend that TVDA holds its AnnualThames Valley District 100 Sporting Clay Championships – thisyear, it will be held over Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th November2010 at the TVDA Range, 101 Morrison Road, Paeroa.Saturday’s 100 target Qualifying Event for the World EnglishSporting Championships will be an excellent opportunity to shooton the kind of terrain that targets will be presented over during theWorld Championships, only three months further down the track. There will be no targets or stand placements that will replicatewhat will be on offer at the Worlds. NZCTA has deemed that thisqualifying event will be the only chance for people to secure aplace in the various teams that New Zealand will be entering intothe Worlds so this is a ‘must attend’ for people wanting to seekselection.Sunday’s event will be TVDA’s Annual Anniversary Cup eventwhich will be FITASC Sporting as normally shot at TVDA. Alsocompeted for at this event is the Holten Collegiate Trophy forall shooters who are currently still at school. As in the past, thisevent is also a Selection Criteria Event for shooters who areworking towards selection for the North and South Island Teamsto compete at the upcoming Nationals and selection for the NewZealand Team to participate at the Oceanias in New Caledoniaaround Easter next year.Everyone is most welcome to attend either or both of theseevents and even if you are not seeking a place in the teams, itwill be a wonderful opportunity to shoot top quality targets andparticularly on an English Sporting Layout with all targets beingpresented as ‘pair combinations’. If you are new to sporting claysshooting, then don’t be shy, just let us know in the office and weensure you are helped out through the day.Pre entries are not required for these two November events sorock up on the day and we certainly hope you will be able to joinus for this Classic Weekend. A discount will be on offer for thoseshooters attending both days and while there will be very worthydrawn prizes on both days, the overall major drawn prize of ashotgun will be available to those shooters who have competedover both days.On the World Championships front, entries are now availableon line and pre-entry into this event is essential. NO entries willbe taken at the event so it is imperative that all entries be lodgedonline or if you need to enter without doing it online, pleasecontact Maureen Coleman on 07 884 9622 evenings or 027 3337786. There is also a 75 target Pre-World Prize shoot being shotat the TVDA Grounds on Thursday 3 February, the day prior toSportingchampsIMPORTANTCHANGES TO SPORTING& COMPAC EVENTSDon’t expect to shoot major sporting and compak eventsif you haven’t pre-nominated. The NZCTA Council hasintroduced a ruling that clubs hosting Compak and SportingIsland, National, Oceania Championships and Grand Prixevents change the entry process to pre-nominations.There will be a cut-off 2 weeks prior to the event for prenominations. You will not necessarily have to pay the entryfees until you arrive at the club on the day, although earlypayment by using the Pay-Pal service on the NZCTA websiteis available. If you enter after the 2 week cut-off, or turn up on theday without pre-nominating there will be a financial penaltyadded to the entry fee, AND you must be present by 8.30amon the day. If you arrive after this time, you will not be ableto compete.Events that have limited numbers will not be able to acceptlate entries if the fields are full through pre-nominations -NO EXCEPTIONS.This has been done to streamline the pre-entry processand to help with pre-squading and ensures the competitionstarts as early in the day as possible. This should ensure theshoot is completed in reasonable time. Pre-squading alsoallows a senior shooter, World or NZCTA National referee tobe included in each squad to ensure fair-play. This system is inuse in every major Sporting and Compac event worldwide.the official practice day of the Worlds for anyone at all wishing toparticipate. Our major sponsors to come on board are Laporte, Stager Sport/Blaser, Downer New Zealand, Richardson’s Real Estate, Clean BurnEnergy Systems, Lion Foundation, Southern Trust, Pub Charity,Hauraki District Council, Tourism Coromandel, Farmlands. DISTRICT ChampsCENTRAL OTAGO2010 and it was the Wanaka GunClub’s turn to host the Central OtagoChampionships. The early morning fog, thanks to the Hawea River system, finallycleared to reveal a clear and sunny day(typical Wanaka weather) Squads wereslow to enter given the early conditionsbut eventualy we got under way with skeetover two fields until our ‘bomb proof’ #1field decided to throw a spanner in theworks! It didn’t seem to worry Sam Gawnwho, shooting skeet in C grade, shot hisfirst skeet possible. All the big players were in town withAustralian, Commonwealth and WorldChampions shooting for the Otago Districttitles. With sun on their backs and no windto speak of the good scores began rollingin.Five possibles in the skeet with LindsayRodgers and Mike Sime fighting it out tothe end after a couple of rounds in theshoot off.Six possibles in the minis with GraemeEde taking to HOA.No possibles in the Double Rise butsix shooters on 19 including LawrenceMcBreen in B grade whittled themselvesdown to a win for Colin WaghornPoints score and five possibles includingWanaka Junior and C grader BrendonMurdoch. The shoot off went for quitesome time and Graeme Ede managed tokeep his cool and outlast the rest.In Single Barrel five A graders, one B andone C grader shot possibles. In the fadinglight Daniel Warnock and David Folley keptsmashing targets with Daniel emergingthe victor after 75 straight.Single Rise and a mountain of possibles(20) All the big names were there and withdelays due to some competitors beingin multiple shoot offs prior to the S/Riseshoot off, we didn’t get underway until5pm (in May). About 50 in and we gotdown to one squad (mainly due to thepoor light) Eventually the car headlightsand spots were turned on and away theywent again seemingly immune to the coldand dark conditions. Congatulations to theguys that hung in there especially to DanielWarnock on his win.Prize giving followed and special thanksmust go to Michael Dobbie who offeredhis assistance to the Wanaka Club in theoffice running the shoot program and toKaren Studholme for her work assistinghim. To the Club members who did whatever needed to be done and to those whopitched in to help reffing and scoring..Thank you all.I took some group photos of theprize winners but they came out verydodgy so I’m not submitting them to theGunshot. Rather I’ll send them to Choir Boymonthly……..I heard some comments toward theend of the day about the time that thingswere taking. In response I’d like to say thatwe had 60 shooters which included someof New Zealand’s best. The program forthe day is one event short of a ProvincialChampionship with a similar number ofcompetitors and one day less to run it. Whensome competitors are in multiple shoot offsthey must be given the time to compete ineach event and not be disavantaged byplaying catch-up 50 targets behind the restof the field. Maybe District Champs needto be held in the summer months to givebetter light conditions? - Cheers 2low8s.Results;Skeet HOA, Lindsay Rodgers. 25 B Walker,M Sime, L Rodgers, T Begg, Sam Gawn.Minis HOA, Graeme Ede. 20 N Kelland,C Waghorn, L Rodgers, D Folley, G Ede, PStudholme.Double Rise HOA, Colin Waghorn. 19B Walker, C Waghorn, M Dobbie, G Ede, AKinimont, L McBreenPoints HOA, Graeme Ede. 75 R Kelly, BWalker, G Ede, P Studholme, B Murdoch.Single Barrel HOA, Daniel Warnock. 25 TCleminson, D Warnock, N Kelland, D Folley,J Munro, K Bonney, S Elliot.Single Rise HOA Daniel Warnock. 25B Waugh, T Sutherland, D Warnock, NKelland, L Sanders, W Darling, M Sime, CWaghorn, L Rodgers, L Maxwell, M Dobbie,Jan Manson, D Folley, Steve Gawn, AWilson, J Munro, P Studholme, S Anglem, LMcBreen, Jeff Manson.High Gun Boston Walker.canterburyCanterbury Clay Target Club hosted theCanterbury District Championships on 13thFebruary 2010 just two weeks prior to theDTL Nationals and a lot of shooters usedthis as an opportunity to have a practicerun for that event.Visitors came from Nelson, West Coastand even from Southland with a squadfrom “The Road”.The weather started out fine butbecame somewhat windy later in themorning making some of the events achallenge to some shooters. The High Gun was won by DanielWarnock, Gorge Road, with Damian Briggswinning the A Grade High Gun.Results:Double Rise HOA - Greg Middleton.A Grade 1st Damian Briggs, 2nd DanielWarnock, 3rd Chris Helem. Shoot Report:BLUE ROCKGUN CLUBThe first shoot for 2010 held by theBlue Rock Gun Club was held at theCraggy Range Vineyard, Te Muna Road,Martinborough, on 14 February 2010.This location is about 8 kilometerssoutheast of Martinborough, and the ideato hold a shoot at this location was thebrainchild of the late Pete Harvey. The concept was and still is to encouragethe vineyard bird shooters to get somepractice at trying to hit something flyingthrough the air (not just frightening thelittle blighters!!!).The day before the shoot a willing bandof helpers, in very gusty conditions, set thecourse which made for a number of thetargets being somewhat difficult to saythe least. Next day the course constructorsarrived early to discover that the wind hadchanged dramatically, and that yesterday’shard targets were impossible and the easyto moderate ones weren’t much better---after some lateral thinking all appeared tobe under control!!!The club organizer got things underwaythen skived off to a wedding, telling thosewho were to run the day that all was undercontrol—he indicated that he would beback at about 4pm all things being equal. His arrival back at the shoot was timely tosay the least, a number of good naturedcomments greeted him.By that stage of the day the wind haddropped considerably therefore he couldn’tsee what the fuss was about.By all accounts the shoot was enjoyedby most, shooting amongst the vines, thenstanding on the terrace to shoot at targetsas they sailed out over the vines down onthe bottom terraces. The local vineyards are encouraged toenter teams with each team bringing alonga bottle or two as prizes to supplement theprize table. As you can imagine the rivalryis quite strong.45 shooters for the day made theadministration relatively easy for theapprentice “office boy” who, by the way,did a sterling job.The HOA was Harry Harrison (Wellington)with 84/100, second was Dan Smith (local)with 82/100 and third was Adam Greene(Wellington) with 80/100. The leadinglady was Jane Davidson (Wellington) with74/100. Jamie Peryer (Hutt Valley) was thetop junior with 79/100.The club’s grateful thanks go to theowners of Craggy Range Vineyard and theirlocal manager Charles Simon who ensuredthat we had free rein of the vineyardamenities.MARCH SHOOTThe Wairarapa Hunt and Blue RockGun Club combined shoot was held on 7March 2010 at Middlerun near Gladstone(Wairarapa). The property is owned by theBooth family. The course was set up bymembers of the Wairarapa Hunt Inc alongwith James Martin (B.R.G.C.) .The area where the shoot took place isthe original homestead site, a large cleararea (about 2-3 acres) surrounded by a ringof large mature trees; this makes for somevery interesting targets. As this shoot is a fund raising eventfor the Hunt Club, most of the targetswere relatively straight forward, but bynecessity some targets were quite testing. This ensured that the more professionalshooters were kept honest. The weather for the day’s shooting wasideal, clear skies, a very gentle breeze, which meant that the day didn’t linger oninto the night! The Hunt Club provided all sustenanceas well as the staff to prepare and distributethe same. This was well received by allconcerned----thoroughly appreciated bythe Gun Club members. The HOA was Graham Peek (local) with89/100; second was Damien O’Leary with84/100; third was Greg Bentley (local) with80/100 (he was also the top junior). The toplady was Louise Robertson; (42 shooters forthe day).APRIL SHOOTThe club’s next shoot was held atWaitawa (the club’s home), which is 3kilometres north of Martinborough onApril 11, 2010.The course was set up on the Saturdayafternoon by a very willing band of helpers;the forecast was indifferent for the next daybut as one of the helpers said “we shootducks in inclement weather and it is theduck shooters’ special so don’t worry”.As this event is part of the “Beretta”circuit we had a stand where the shooterscould try out guns supplied by “Beretta”This particular stand is separate from thecompetition, therefore the targets don’tcount towards a shooter’s score. The clubis grateful to Bill McLeod who made thetrip down from Auckland (accompanied byhis wife) for his assistance and expertise. We had shooters from Whanganui, Levin,Hawke’s Bay, Wellington and all parts inbetween. Fortunately the weather waskind to us until the sun went down!As we only shoot simulated field at thisclub-- the course was made up with someeasy, some moderate, a couple quite hardand one difficult --- one shooter was heardto say “that’s impossible!” then proceedto shoot 4/5 during both rounds, thenconsequently have one of the easy stationscompletely baffle him .The local Playcentre once again dida sterling job with the catering, whileHunting & Fishing (Wairarapa) along withBeretta provided an excellent prize table (3out of 5 got a prize).Unfortunately the club’s rabbit trapdecided to give up the ghost half waythrough the second round so the shootwas shortened to a 94 target shoot whichcreated a few minor problems for the officeteam! The most gratifying aspect of the daywas the number of juniors who took part(10%) which we believe augers well for thesport’s future. The day’s results are as follows---HOAJamie Peryer with 84/94 (he was also thetop junior) second Brent Quin with 81/94while Steve Cates was third with 80/94.The top lady was Jude Manton andDavid Donald won the Peter HarveyMemorial Trophy.Tate Hayes (junior) from Levin had ahuge smile when he left as he collected theshotgun prize (supplied by Beretta)110 shooters for the dayFootnote; As the next day was the birthday ofsignificance for the landowner, the clubmembers made a presentation to him ofa duck shooter’s special (nibbles & port)and a large pair of glasses (made withbottoms of preserving jars and #8 wire) asa reflection of the fact that he seeminglycouldn’t see targets very well at a recentshoot. This gift might just be donated tothe club for future presentation for thosewith a similar problem.gunshot 27

Mental TrainingQuick Fixes by Michael J. Keyes, M.D.The way to success in any sport isthrough hard work, long hours ofpractice and a modicum of talent.Or is it?We all know shooters who appeared tohave overnight success after they boughta new shotgun, took a new supplementor changed glasses. It doesn’t make sensethat one small change should make such alarge difference in performance. So whatis happening? The Motivation to ImproveIn the first place, whatever you are seeingis probably not due only to the one changethe shooter made. Performance doesn’tchange out of context. Something elsepreceded that change, and that somethingprobably involved work and practice.Second, the shooter was trying tochange. The shooter had one goal in mindwhen he or she bought that new gun orthose new glasses – scoring better. Thetrigger for buying a specific product ormaking a lifestyle change may have comefrom an article in Shotgun Sports, but themotivation was to improve. In theory, the reason for picking aparticular change should be based ona scientific study of the problem andelimination of all possible answers exceptthe one that will work. In practice, thisnever happens because a) there are veryfew scientific studies on what works andb) most people don’t work that way, theywould rather have a quick fix. The ironicpart is “quick fixes often work, but not forthe reasons given by those who sell or usethem.”So, if we don’t have a scientific way tochange our behaviour during competitionor practice, how do we go about makingour choices? We look to the experts andemulate them.If you ignore the fact some expertshooters get paid to shoot a particularshotgun or use a certain product, copyingthe experts is a good thing. After all, theyare good shooters because of what they doand what they use. Some of the productsthey use may not have much bearing onhow they shoot (a truck, for instance), butyou have to assume any shooting productor training program an elite shooter useshas value for that shooter. By shootingthe same shotgun or using the same30 gunshotammunition, you let your favourite shooterdo all the research work and you reap thebenefits.Another way to let someone else do thehard work is to read as much as possibleabout any product or system that appealsto you. While writers may suffer from thesame lack of research you do, they havean interest in finding out what they canabout a product or system. In addition, they are able to interview those who use orsell the product and find out from otherswhat their experience has been. Whilewriters and editors don’t like to give badmarks to products that may be advertisedin a magazine, they also don’t want to ruintheir reputations. So, for the most part, writers like positive reviews and will avoida bad product. Again, there is no sciencepresent, but the chances of giving youpoor information is not very high.Lastly, if a product works it sells. Whenyou see 75% of the shooters on the lineusing a product, you can be pretty surea lot of shooters like it. Let’s look at whysome products work for some people.A New ShotgunProbably the most common time aperson notices a “radical” change (meaningthey won a class or did a lot better) is whenthey start to use a new shotgun. Shotgunsare among the more expensive items in theshotgun sports. If you borrowed a gun, youare not able to make modifications to it,and if it was borrowed or handed down, it islikely your shotgun is of lesser quality or notdesigned to be a specialised sporting arm.A new shotgun usually means you havecommitted to the sport and want to have ashotgun you use only for competition. Thismeans a shotgun with a different balance, longer barrel, quicker lock time and farmore adjustments. It also means the gunwill probably fit a lot better. So, right off the bat you have a betterfitting, more expensive shotgun designedfor the sport you are shooting. Just thinkabout that. You made a decision to delvedeeper into shooting by spending severalthousand dollars on a shotgun you cannottake hunting. This means you haveconfidence in your shooting to the extentof that investment (at least), and you geta tool that not only fits you better but isbetter for the job. Longer barrels meana longer sight plane and better followthrough.A better fit means you are moreconsistent each time you shoot and nottired out from fighting the gun. In itself, these factors can add two targets or moreto your match. As you progress, you learn more abouthow to shoot your shotgun and takeadvantage of the features it offers. Mostshooters buy a target shotgun withouttaking into account all the advantagesa target gun offers. Manufacturershave designed these guns to shoot claytargets and have taken advantage ofthe experience of expert shooters andobservations over time to perfect theirproducts. It’s no wonder a lot of shooterssuddenly do better with a new, well-fittedshotgun.There are a lot of other products thatwork because they do what is advertisedand more. They are often bought for areason that is not the most importantone (because everyone else has one, forinstance), but because they are effective, they will help a shooter achieve his or hergoal. The Placebo EffectThere is a long history in medicineof acknowledging the “placebo effect”.Placebos are often called “sugar pills” andare used in research to be the neutraltreatment against which an experimentaltreatment is measured. Early on, researcherslearned placebos have effects that occurby just being there. It is not clear whetherthe context of treatment causes changesin a person’s physiology/neurophysiologyor if there are other mechanisms, but wedo know there are changes that occur inpeople when they think an active processis going to occur. Placebos have been usedfor years to help people cure themselves. In fact, there used to be a product calledObecalp (read it backwards) that wasnumbered according to the colour of thepill.I am sure there are a lot of productsthat have no significant effect on shotgunshooting but do trigger a placebo effect. While this may seem trivial, the placeboeffect is one of the most powerful inmedicine, and there is no reason to think itis not just as powerful in any performanceendeavour.Continued on page 37

By Vic HarkerThose of us who have ownedguns and have shot all our livescan tend to forget how alien thisis to most of the population. Inour increasingly urban cultureguns are now only seen bymany people as the lethal toolsof criminals and terrorists. It’s not surprising then when socialisingor working with people outside your usualcircle of friends, to mention that yourfavourite sport is shooting can representsomething of a conversational bombshell. How much more so if, like me,you have spent most of yourlife working in the firearmsindustry. With experience,of which I have had a lot, Ihave become prepared fordisapproval and can usuallymake a case, which, while itmight not change the anti’smind, he may at least consideranother perspective. In the case of guns andshooters, most people aredon’t knows, and if youexplain simply what shootingis about and why you do it,their response may surpriseyou. The other mythology attachedto shooting, apart from it being onlythe province of criminals is the grousemoor image. Many people believe thatshooting is inaccessible and only forthe very rich. This objection is one whichis much easier to deal with. Certainlyshooting in most forms is not cheap but isaffordable for lots of people. For the veryyoung and those still in education, unlessthey are funded by their parents, cost isan issue, but for the more established it isless so. The firearms industry has alwaysunderstood, based on studies of thedemographics of shooting, that the middleaged with some disposable income aretheir main customers. A lot of people fallinto that category and as a CPSA membervery likely you are one of them, and so weare meeting potential shooters all the time, but we don’t make the most of it.If you have been shooting clay targetsfor a while you will know yourself the kindof person, man or woman, who is likelyto enjoy it. Once a sportsman always asportsman, and friends coming to the end oftheir useful life as club footballers, cricketersor rugby players are prime candidates. They will be naturally competitive andused to the rough camaraderie of theclubhouse, as well as getting up and havinga go.Shooters however come in all shapes, sizes and disposition. Competitive shootingis not a team game and so also there is roomfor the quieter introspective type. The firearms industryhas always understoodthat the middle aged withdisposable income aretheir main customers32gunshot

Make it fun!The first thing to do is to get them allshooting, until they do they won’t knowif they like it or not. With beginners inany sport it’s a feel of failure in front ofothers that discourages them most. So,take the tension out of your recruits withthe first few shots, it’s supposed to befun so help them to enjoy it. Probablythe best venue would be a club on aweek day with no competitions andnot too many people. The ground willusually have a practice trap somewherethat will throw some easy targets. At thispoint provide the minimum instructionwith the emphasis on safety. Beforegoing any further, check your friend formaster eye, if you don’t know how to doit, find out. This technicality is best dealtwith right from the beginning, beforehe’s missed everything he’s shot at andneither he or you know why. Assumingthere are no problems in that area thenget him to break a few targets as soonas possible. I have never met anyonewho didn’t like hitting something hehad shot at, whether he ever does itagain or not. Don’t forget about recoil, people who have never fired a gun intheir lives have heard about it and it’salways the first thing on their mind, sofor adults a 12 bore and a light load iswhat’s required. Be encouraging andtake the drama out of it. At the sametime, without scaring anyone, do ensurethey are always conscious they are incharge of a lethal weapon. It will be clear soon enough if thefriend likes shooting and whether ornot he is going to be any good at it. Ido not mean a champion, there’s noway of knowing that, but does he havea modicum of ability that can take himShooters today comein all shapes, sizes anddispositionsa few steps further? Most importantly, enjoying it at the beginning is theplatform for whatever comes later.Occasionally you do find someoneyou know almost immediately will atleast make a competent shot. I had abusiness partner a few years ago whohas now unfortunately passed away. Wehad played cricket together in a villageteam and also some tennis. He was anatural ball player and a good batsman.I could beat him at tennis, largelybecause he wasn’t as fit as me but healways played a lot of good shots. Heneeded to know a little about guns andso we used a trap on a friend’s farm andhe started shooting. He used a shotgunin the same deft way he did a cricket bat.I did not throw difficult targets, insteadI allowed him to employ his naturalsense of timing on easy ones and let hisconfidence build. After a while I startedto push the envelope and he would missa few, but he was sufficiently confidentnot to be phased and would quicklycome to terms with the harder birds.First StepsIn the beginning that’s all youcan do, get people shooting, make itaccessible and enjoyable, the rest is upto them, but taking those first few stepsis all important. After that your newrecruit may look for some professionalcoaching. If he can afford it, help him todo so. In a few months if you find he isin the car with you going to a registeredshoot that’s fine. If he shoots at his localclub that’s also good. He has become ashooter.Somebody once said “Democracy isan awful form of government, but everyalternative is far worse”. I agree with thatbut democracy is a numbers’ game andif you want your way you have to getpeople to agree with you on at least afew things. I want to go on shooting; Iwant those that come after me to alsohave the opportunity if they wish to.This won’t happen without numbers ofshooters, the more the better, becausewe will have a voice that will influencethose who govern us and the biggerthe voice the more they will listen. Anorganised voice is even better so doencourage them to join the CPSA. Ifyou introduce only one person a yearto shooting you may duplicate yourselfand that person may do the same andso on. So far as the future of shooting isconcerned that is really our only chance.Acknowledgement: Article by courtsey of Pull! the Officialmagazine of the Clay Pigeon Shooting Association.gunshot 33

y Stuart L. LucasEver watch the good guys shoot skeet, trap, sporting clays or 5-stand and wonderhow they make apparently difficult shotslook easy? Ever say to yourself, “Man, I’dlike to be able to take a target like that,”and wonder how they actually do it? Onething all these games have in common isthe fundamental that the shot columnmust be placed properly onto the target byacquiring lead (forward allowance). Mostof us who shoot or have shot clay birdscompetitively are aware of the most usedtechniques of obtaining forward allowancein the popular clay-target games: theSustained Lead, the Pull-Away and theSwing-Through methods.Skeet shooters generally advocate thebest method for their game is sustainedlead. They apply this technique on targetsby setting a hold point that allows the targetto be peripherally seen upon emergencefrom the house, matching barrel speed totarget speed, with the correct allowancebeing held out front of the bird all alonguntil the moment the trigger is pulled. This method works very well for skeet. Theswing-through technique, though not ascommonly used as it may have been in theearly years of the game, can also work wellon skeet targets, given the relatively shortdistances of the game. Swing-throughis a good fall-back technique when yournormal method gets up on the wrong sideof the bed.Trapshooters often profess to hold tothe sustained-lead technique as well, andmany use a bit of swing-through for thevaried angles the target gives as it flies outfrom the trap. Although an exaggeratedswing-through method is not normallyseen on a trap field, it can and does comeinto play in some form or another when ahard-right, hard-left and possibly even aquick straightaway catches the shooter alittle slow out of the blocks.Sporting clays and 5-stand shooters, dueto the virtually limitless variations of targetpresentations they will see in the course oftheir shooting experiences, make use of allthree – mostly pull-away and sustained buteven a touch of swing-through on occasion.A skeet field can be a good practice ground for learningthe diminishing lead. You might want to ask to havethe targets slowed down a bit for you.Breaking PointHold Pointgunshot 35

Depending on the shooter’s commandof these techniques, it’s possible all couldcome into use at one time or another in asingle tournament or practice round. Themore proficient a sporting shooter wishesto become, the more important it is toknow how to make use of all three majortechniques. The most popular method of obtainingforward lead in sporting and 5-stand atthe present time seems to be the pullawaytechnique. This method is generallyapplied to the target by setting a holdpoint not too distant from the breakingpoint or sweet spot in the flight path. Uponemergence of the target, the bead is placedeither onto or in front of the bird, the barrelmatched to the speed of the target andthen accelerated slightly away from thebird. The barrel speed and accelerationfrom the target give the shooter the leadneeded, and the trigger is pulled as thelead picture becomes correct and sure inthe shooter’s mind. This technique mustbe tuned to each presentation according tospeed, angle and distance. There is one technique of obtaininglead that is not often discussed, theDiminishing Lead. This method differs fromother techniques in a fundamental way.Diminishing lead utilises a barrel move thatdoes not precisely match target speed forthe majority of the target’s flight. How canthat be? Let’s take a look at this unusualyet effective method for applying lead to atarget. The name tells you a lot about howthis technique works. It relies on thebarrel speed to be slower than the target’sand, therefore, the initial lead picture isBreaking PointA target startingnear 2 o’clock on atrajectory that wouldmake it land near 8o’clock can be brokenwith a diminishinglead. Anticipate the flightpath upon emergence of thebird, make a slow, smooth gunmove, and allow the target to closethe gap towards the barrel.diminished or reduced as the target nearsthe barrel/bead image. To an onlooker, itwould appear the shooter has attained aproper hold point, but upon the appearanceof the target in flight, the barrel’s positionin relation to the target erodes. Indeed itdoes, but when applied properly, you canattain positive results. The bulk of my personal experience withdiminishing lead has been when it wasnot the originally intended technique butended up being used as a last-second repairfor a lead picture that was incorrect. I haveattempted shots on targets where, uponthe call for the target, I moved the barrel toofast or too early and realised I had too muchlead picture. I needed to correct in a hurrybut did not wish to further ruin the pictureand any chance of success by stopping mygun and attempting to recreate the lead. There is not time for that. So…. I hit thebrakes to slow the barrel and try to triggerthe shot at the right moment as the targetgets closer to it. Sometimes it works; oftenit doesn’t.When used as an intended leadtechnique, the shooter attains a hold pointa few feet off the sweet spot or break zone, the target comes into view, and the gunsmoothly, with little speed, moves towardthe break zone. As the target nears thebarrel/bead image, the shooter finessesthe diminishing-lead picture, deliberatelyallowing the target to close the gap.You might wonder when a shooter wouldactually want to use this technique to scoreon a target versus the more common pullawayor sustained-lead methods. Slowtargets seen for a fair amount of time aseither crossers or quartering birds areIncomingQuartering BirdHold PointShooting StandA slower full-crosser from left-to-right wouldbe a good candidate for a diminishing lead.Make a smooth, slow gun move to the rightand finesse the lead picture for the correctforward allowance at the break.good candidates for the diminishing-leadmethod, especially ones that show a fairamount of belly before they begin theirdescent to the ground. It’s often temptingand very easy to move your barrel with toomuch speed on such sluggish targets andend up creating too great of a lead picture.Take, for instance, an incomingquartering target launched from a trap 35yards out to the right of the station you’rein. The flight path will have the targetcrossing your field of view slowly from rightto left and touching down about 15 yardsout in front of the stand. If you imagine aclock face out in front of you (see diagramon page 14), this target would take to theair at about 2 o’clock and continue on atrajectory that would have it landing near 8o’clock. Such a target could be shot usinga diminishing lead with a hold point justto the right of the break point. A goodbreak point would be slightly before thetarget starts to settle to the ground andno longer gives any belly area to shoot at.Upon calling for the target and it cominginto view, you make a slow, smooth moveof the gun to the left along the anticipatedflight path and allow the target to close thegap towards the barrel. The effort has tobe to keep the barrel moving just enoughto finesse the lead picture for the correctforward allowance. Once it’s seen, triggerthe shot with a moving gun. Will any instructor teach you thistechnique? Not all shooting coaches orinstructors teach diminishing lead. Why? Inpart they may not consider it a consistentclay-breaking method. Many may have littleexperience with it. Some may feel there ismore consistent hand and body controlgiven to a gun when moving with the bird’sflight path versus going against it. I canunderstand that. Yet, when applied to a36 gunshot

Hold Pointlong-seen target. I have found it is not thatdifficult to accomplish and get a good feelfor this method. You can keep this as ahandy last-second repairwhen usual techniqueisn’t working.Diminishing lead can be practised onsporting and 5-stand fields where suchquartering and/or crossing presentationsgenerally exist. Another practice area youcould take advantage of is a skeet field. Skeettargets thrown at their normal velocity couldbe a bit quick to become accustomed tomaking such slow, controlled barrel moves,so ask the permission of the club managerto have the trap adjusted to throw a slowerand perhaps slightly higher target. If thiscan be done, practise your shots at Station2 low house or Station 3 low house. On theother side of the field, take advantage ofthe high house target from Stations 5 and6. Station 4, with slower birds, can makegood practice for full crossers. If permittedtake the opportunity to add a little yardageto your shots by stepping back 3-5 yardsbehind these stations. Let your eyes andhands learn what it takes to finesse thediminishing lead technique at closer andfarther distances. This rather different lead-obtainingmethod can make a difference in certainsituations, like when your normal techniquejust isn’t quite right with slower birds. Givediminishing lead a try. You’ll be addingone more target-breaking method to yourrepertoire, and that is never a bad thing.Acknowledgement: Diminishing Lead by Stuart L. Lucas, photos by Johnny Cantu is by courtesy of Shotgun SportsAmerica’s leading Shotgun Magazine.Breaking PointMental Training continued from page 30The biggest problems shooters have arewhen dealing with match pressure. If thereare products that will allow you to giveup some of that pressure because of anirrational belief or misguided confidencein what they will do, there is no reasonnot to use the products. If it helps by “notworking”, then it still helps. Most products that have no effect don’tlast very long. If a product is totally a scam, that is usually found out pretty quickly.Filling in the GapsThere are many products that help ashooter quickly improve because they offersomething missing in the shooter’s regimen– they “fill in the gaps”. A counterintuitiveexample is 7/8 –ounce target loads. WhenOlympic rules lowered the weight of theshot that could be fired (a move that wasprompted by cost, by the way), scorescontinued to go up instead of plateauingout or going down, as predicted.“Experience is directlyproportional to the amountof equipment ruined.”Harrisberger’s Fourth Law of the LabWhat happened was shooters tiredless with the lower load and were able totolerate shooting more in practice withoutgetting a little gun shy from the beatingthey took with higher-weight loads. Thisallowed shooters to concentrate more onthe target and less on the distractions withthe bigger loads. Once shooters saw theywere producing higher scores, confidencegrew and the loads were accepted.Other products can do the samething. New glasses from a reputablemanufacturer fitted to the shooter leta shooter concentrate better and allowhim/her to use their technical skills moreeffectively. “You can’t hit what you can’tsee” is true, especially for us old folks.Trying Products OutAs far as I am concerned, there are nospecific products to avoid, no matter howsilly they may seem. The trick is to avoidusing too many of them. In a practicalsense, you have to make a good analysis ofyour shooting and practice routine in orderto take advantage of products that mayhelp. It doesn’t really make a differencehow the product helps, as long as you gethelp. Many products will work right awaybecause they fill in the gaps.A well-fitted target shotgun is going tohelp a new shooter no matter what, butan experienced shooter may have otherneeds. When you decide to try somethingnew and different you have to have a goalset in order to determine if the product ishelpful. Goals should be specific to yourtraining and not “I want to shoot better.” Weall want that. Instead, you should decidewhat is wrong and look for an answer toyour concern. If it involves a product thatpromises quick and effective results andseems to be able to do so for others, try itout.Common sense tells us not to changeguns right before that big match you havebeen training for all year, but if that is theanswer you have come up with, go for it.Fresh ideas and fresh systems can imbueconfidence and help with consistency bykeeping you from getting fatigued, makingsure you are technically at your peak andyour mental focus is sharp. It’s best to give the new product a chancebut limit how long you will try it out. Try tobe as objective as possible. If you know theproduct works as a placebo, it will still work(this has been shown in research) and, ifyou have filled in a gap, it will continue towork for as long as you need it. Sometimesa quick fix is exactly what you need.Dr. Keyes has written over 200 articleson mental training for Shotgun Sports andis author of the book Mental Training. Ellesmere90 years onOn left in hat is current President, Stan Childs, centre is life member Graeme Nairn andcutting the cake is life member Stan Maw who had just had his 90th birthdayClose to 100 past and present members, visiting shooters and friends and wellwishersattended the Robt. PattersonMemorial shoot at the Ellesmere grounds.Robt Patterson was first President ofthe infant Club way back in 1920 andit was thought appropriate to hold thecelebrations on his Memorial Shoot day.Grandson Colin Patterson and grandson inlaw Gerald Ede (himself a former Presidentof the Club) very generously put up around$400 of cooked hams as trophies for theshoot and this was very much appreciatedby the Club (and the winning shooters!).Gerald has been sponsoring this shootfor many years. The shoot is somewhatunusual as it is at 21 targets which is athrowback to yesteryear when everythingwas done in threes – 7 x 3, and is at blackclays on handicap. For the shoot AA andA Grade were on 19m, B Grade 16m, andC Grade 13m. Conditions were ideal forshooting and 14 of the 60 shooters presentrecorded possibles and shot off for thetrophies. Shooters dropped out regularlyand after 15 Targets, with five each trap,Selwyn Everett, Andrew Washbourne, AlanPerrett, Jim Pateman, James Lilley andEthan Garrett lined up on trap 1 to battle itout. Ethan dropped his first, James 7th, Jimhis 30th, Alan his 35th until Andrew missedhis 46th to leave Selwyn the winner afterone of the best shoot offs seen at the Clubfor several years.(61 targets)Parallel to the Anniversary, one of our LifeMembers Stan Maw is now in his 91st yearand nephews Leon Maw and Dave Harkerssvery generously sponsored meat trophiesfor a graded shoot of 25 Targets off 15m.Possibles were registered in A Gradeby T Maaka, B Tait, S Watson, A Harkerss,J McCormick, J Lilley, R Greatorex, SamGawn, Steve Gawn, R Wilson and G Ede.B grade saw Eddie Foster with 25, SimonMcMillan and Russell Wall on 24. C Grade24’s were Ethan Garrett, Karl Perrett andAndrew Washbourne. After the shootoffsresults were as follows. A Grade 1st G Ede,2nd R Greatorex 3rd Sam Gawn. B Grade1st E Foster, 2nd R Wall, 3rd S McMillan. Cgrade 1st E Garrett, 2nd K Perrett, 3rd AWashbourne.Prior to afternoon tea, and the cuttingof the Anniversary cake, made by Mrs Thianand I believe decorated with lanes and atrap house by Sandra & Niven McCormick,President Stan Childs welcomed all andthanked them for attending. He thankedhis partner Paula, and the host of shooterswives and partners for their work in thekitchen – the spread was outstanding andmuch enjoyed by all. Special thanks wereaccorded to Jim Roxburgh, Sarah Rollinsonand Rachael McCormick for ‘manning’ theoffice in place of the regular secretary due toill health. The Club was very appreciative ofthe sponsorship for trophies and Mr Childsthanked the sponsors for their wonderfulinterest and support. Finally Mr Childsthanked the members and visiting shootersfor attending to make it a memorable day inthe club’s history.Past members attending includedformer President Stu Doyle, Mike Preston,Graeme Ede, Stan Childs Snr. (many willremember Stan from his rugby playingdays for Southbridge), Colin Stott who asPresident of the NZ Gun Club Associationopened the current clubhouse in 1977,Kevin (Corgi) McCormick, Ian McCormickand Ken Boal who was a puller for the Clubfor 22 years. The Club was privileged tohave its two Life Members Graeme Nairn, and Stan Maw in attendance. Graeme isfit and well and looking forward to twoshooting trips in the near future. Stan, despite his years is hale and hearty and stilllooks fit enough for a 25 straight! – I thinkhe thoroughly enjoyed his day. BarbaraDonald, wife of the late ELF (“Wig”) Donald, has always been a great supporter of theClub and it was good to see her attending. The Patterson family has had a significantpart to play in the Club’s history. Robt.Patterson’s son Billy Patterson, as well asfollowing in his father’s steps as President, brought fame to the Club by winning theN Z Live Sparrow Title at Sockburn in 1928.The late Murray, and I suspect Colin aswell, were employed by the Club to ‘run’the live birds out to the traps at shoots.Billy’s daughter, Alison, married Gerald Ede.Gerald was interested in shooting and soonintroduced his sons Graeme and Donaldto the sport. Daughter Robyn also shotfor a period. Gerald was President of theClub for the 1983\4 term, and many willremember Alison for the selfless work shedid for many Community organisations. The boys took to shooting like ducks towater and it wasn’t long before they werewinning Club Championships. Strangely ifyou had asked me when the boys startedshooting I would have plumped for Donaldas the better shot by a whisker. HoweverDon gave it away and the rest is history andGraeme won many, many Club, Provincialand Island Championships. He emulated hisgrandfather by winning the NZ Single Risetitle at Yaldhust and went on to representNZ on many occasions, and of coursesurpassed all by winning the Gold Medal atthe Games. “C J” (Colin) spoke briefly on theanniversary and entertained the gatheringwith his poem “Ede Takes the Gold ‘’ theballad of Graeme’s Commonwealth GamesGold medal.Continued on page 4938 gunshot

SHOOTREPORTAt the recent NZCTA council meetingdiscussion was held on the future of ISSFshooting and the NZCTA`s role within thisdiscipline. The answers that came out of thatdiscussion were that NZCTA`s role in thisarea is to introduce shooters and makeavailable through their member clubsthe opportunity for shooters to try thisdiscipline, lay down a format and pathwayfor shooters to follow through all levelsof competition all the way up to OlympicGames. NZCTA`s main focus to be at thebeginning level, through to NZCTA Zoneevents, Island and Nationals. The upper level of events to bemanaged by NZ Shooting Federation inconjunction with NZCTA.To that end the following will beoffered and implemented over the comingmonths.New Introduction typeevents; 50 Target ClubLevel Events. These to be promoted and formulatedbetween clubs with facilities andinterested ISSF shooters who wish to assistclubs conduct them. The events to be of 50 target size andcan be run over Ball Trap or Trench orboth, also ISSF skeet if enough interestedshooters.Cost to be approx $20-00 per event andinclude some small type of trophy eventexact formula to be left to the peoplerunning the events. It is envisaged thatfurther practice after these events may beavailable for further shooting if clubs andshooters agree to provide this. The purpose of these events is purelyto offer the opportunity for shooters tohave an opportunity to try this style ofshooting discipline in a fun, cost effective, introductory type environment. It is the intention for clubs or areas torun approx. four or five of these type ofevents between June and Septemberleading up to the Zone competitions. Tothat end the NZCTA will offer to thosegroups running these events two freeentries to the local Zone shoot event. One for a junior shooter (under 21) andone for a senior shooter. (to be used asaggregate style prizes) programmes needto be approved by NZCTA to be eligible forthese prizes.Groups wishing to run these eventsneed to advise their programme and datesto Gavin Searle so they can be publishedon the NZCTA website for shooters’information.Any club or group wanting furtherinformation please contact Gavin on(03) 383 2074 or 0274 547 153 or email;searlefamily@xtra.co.nzNZCTA Zone shoot format; From this year the only requirement onclubs conducting these zone events willbe to run these events over two days withno requirement to provide practice on theFriday before.(Should the club wish to run practiceon the Friday the NZCTA will advertise thiswith their programme)Where a club does not provide practicethe day before it would be desirable (butnot mandatory) that they open a Ball Trapif available as a 5 target practice trap upuntil the commencement of the first roundof competition. Also any conducting club hosting anISSF Zone shoot will be entitled to runother disciplines of clay target shooting atthe same times should they so desire andthe method of conducting these will beleft to local club management to arrange.NZCTA selectedindividuals to World CupEvents;Later this year (August) the NZCTA willrelease details of a selection process andcompetition venue, possibly two or threenominated World Cup events where wewill select up to three shooters on a firstpast the post style selection process overNZ major tournaments, to attend andcompete at World Cup events.Funding for these will most likely be selffunded and will be tagged to have met aminimum qualifying score at a minimumof one current season NZ event.(score tobe set)Full details will be posted on NZCTAwebsite and distributed to ISSF shootersas soon as details are finalised.Along with the above internal NZCTAevents we are awaiting announcementon selection of some of our NZ shootersas competitors to the CommonwealthGames later this year. We look forwardto this announcement which by the timeyou all read this should be known. Wewill follow with interest their form andresults through to these events. It goeswithout saying our congratulations ontheir selection and best wishes to them allin the upcoming competitions.Gavin Searle.(ISSF shooting)ATA SHOOTAT THAMESApril 17th 2010We enjoyed another fun day of shootingat the Thames club. OBITUARYRON DENTRon’s great loves were his family, friends and of course shooting,in particular clay target & bird shooting. After the demise of CACin the early 70s Ron pretty much single-handedly kept clay targetshooting alive in NZ, by importing clay targets in a time when notargets were to be had and manufacturing wads for shot shellreloading. Back then reloading was only way shooters couldafford to carry on shooting. With a keen eye for an opportunity Ron established his verysuccessful business Reloaders Supplies. Ron & Reloaders broughtan approach to retail in NZ never seen before in the firearmsindustry with Mail Order catalogues & fast, efficient service. Thatfast efficient service was even more astounding when you considerRon was working with Road Services & NZ Rail. Back in those dayswhen you wanted something special, Ron made sure Reloaderswas the only destination it could be found. Ron used to wear a teeshirt with “If it bangs, we sell it” printed on.Today Reloaders is still an icon within the firearms industry andmany of Ron’s initiatives continue to be copied by Reloaderscompetitors.Ron was one of the major sponsors of the NZCTA. He sponsored theNZ Skeet Handicap and the NZ Handicap by Distance. Shootingwas a passion with Ron.If it was in Ron’s power to help he would, those that asked andthose that did not. Ron helped shooting clubs with advice andfinancial assistance. He alsohelped individuals with adviceand financial help when required.Possibly one of Ron’s great gifts forthose prepared to listen was hisadvice and mentoring.Ron took numerous groups ofshooters abroad for competitions& shooting events. When it cameto getting tickets, permits or anyrequired paper work sorted, andgetting people to turn up at theright place and time, Ron wasin charge whether you wantedit or not. Undoubtedly Ron was the reason many shootersexperienced some great times. Because of Ron, our Tour Leader, trips were the stuff of legends. He loved to travel & did so extensively with his wife Lois for bothbusiness & pleasure. Ron travelled extensively throughout US,Australia, Europe, Argentina, Mexico and China, so he got to see agood part of the world. The pleasure part of Ron’s travels generallyinvolved shooting clay targets and birds, both of these were Ron’strue shooting passions. Ron always made friends when abroadand most of these people have become lifelong friends.Ron loved his family. In the last few years Ron’s grand childrenhave been the apple of his eye.making tracks...Be sure to read the finalparagraph; your understandingof it will depend on the earlierpart of the content. The US standard railroad gauge(distance between the rails) is 4 feet, 8.5inches. That’s an exceedingly odd number. Why was that gauge used? Because that’sthe way they built them in England, andEnglish expatriates built the US railroads. Why did the English build them like that?Because the first rail lines were built by thesame people who built the pre-railroadtramways, and that’s the gauge they used. Why did ‘they’ use that gauge then?Because the people who built the tramwaysused the same jigs and tools that theyused for building wagons, which used thatwheel spacing. Why did the wagons have that particularodd wheel spacing? Well, if they tried touse any other spacing, the wagon wheelswould break on some of the old, longdistance roads in England, because that’sthe spacing of the wheel ruts.So who built those old rutted roads?Imperial Rome built the first long distanceroads in Europe (and England) for theirlegions. The roads have been used eversince. And the ruts in the roads? Roman warchariots formed the initial ruts, whicheveryone else had to match for fear ofdestroying their wagon wheels. Sincethe chariots were made for ImperialRome, they were all alike in the matterof wheel spacing. Therefore the UnitedStates standard railroad gauge of 4 feet,8.5 inches is derived from the originalspecifications for an Imperial Roman warchariot. Bureaucracies live forever. So the next time you are handed aspecification/procedure/process andwonder ‘What horse’s ass came up with it?,you may be exactly right. Imperial Romanarmy chariots were made just wide enoughto accommodate the rear ends of two warhorses. (Two horses’ asses) Now, the twistto the story:When you see a Space Shuttle sitting onits launch pad, there are two big boosterrockets attached to the sides of the mainfuel tank. These are solid rocket boosters,or SRB’s. The SRB’s are made by Thiokol attheir factory in Utah. The engineers whodesigned the SRB’s would have preferredto make them a bit fatter, but the SRB’s hadto be shipped by train from the factory tothe launch site. The railroad line from thefactory happens to run through a tunnelin the mountains, and the SRB’s had to fitthrough that tunnel. The tunnel is slightlywider than the railroad track, and therailroad track, as you now know, is about aswide as two horses’ behinds. So, a major Space Shuttle designfeature of what is arguably the world’smost advanced transportation systemwas determined over two thousand yearsago by the width of a horse’s ass. Andyou thought being a horse’s ass wasn’timportant? Ancient horse’s asses controlalmost everything... and CURRENT HorsesAsses are controlling everything else.gunshot 45

ABSOLUTE Bby Vic HarkerUsing inherited skillsFor the most accomplishedshotgun shooters hitting flyingtargets, clay pigeons or live gameis a conditional reflex. The task of judging the angle anddistance placing the gun in the shoulder, aligning it with the target and hitting itas achieved with about the same amountof conscious thought as we apply tochanging gear in our car. Similarly when atennis player returns a blistering serve withpinpoint precision and accuracy, placingthe ball in exactly the right spot to win thepoint, or a cricketer smacks a fast ball to theboundary, the same mental and physicalconditioning is brought into play. There isnothing miraculous or superhuman aboutany of these skills. We are all to a lesseror greater extent endowed with abilitiesdeveloped in mankind through millennia tojudge speed and distance, and beginningwith throwing stones, then using spearsand bows and arrows, and finally withfirearms we learned to strike and kill ourprey or our enemies at distance. What theshooter does is utilise these innate skills andcombine them with learned techniquesapplicable to shooting a gun. With diligentpractice his technique improves and hisconfidence grows. With confidence in hisown ability, conscious thought becomesless of a factor, the subconscious beginsto do its best work; inhibitions recedeand his shooting becomes fluid, fast andnatural. That’s where we all want to be, butthe foundation of this is in a solid learnedtechnique. In the best of all worlds everybodywould learn to shoot a shotgun underthe guidance of a skilled instructor andgradually progress to an acceptable levelof competence. Unfortunately we livein the real world and many of us take upshooting in the most haphazard fashion.Very often that means buying a gun, goingto a club and immediately finding out youcan’t hit your own hat and then castingaround for help. The help you often get, though doubtless well intentioned is not“usually of much use. This is because it’s notcommunicated in a way abeginner can understandand also is almost alwaysentirely subjective. Thatis to say your friendlyadvisor is telling youwhat he thinks he doeswhich may or may notbe true. For many of usthis is how we did learnto shoot, although it’s the worst possibleway. If at this moment you are new to thesport and you have a gun but can’t shootit, its time to decide on your priorities. Isit your ambition to become a clay targetshooting champion or just an adequateshot and have some fun? Perhaps yourambitions don’t even extend to the claysand you want to develop your skills forshooting game. I would suggest the mostsensible plan is to concentrate on firstbecoming an adequate shot, based on agood understanding of a basic technique. At this point forget most formalised formsof clay shooting, your immediate objectiveis to learn to shoot a shotgun, pure andsimple. Fortunately English sportingclays are just about anything you wantthem to be, but usually amount to driventargets or crossing targets and everythingin between. Practice is what you needat this time not competition. Build yourconfidence on targets you have learnt tohit consistently.CoachingGet some coaching if you can affordit, but don’t expect the coach to performmiracles; there is no magic ingredient thathe can provide you with. The best you canhope for is he knows his job and is a goodcommunicator, but what he will be tryingto teach you is nothing new.It is an irrefutable fact that in order to hita moving target you must shoot in front ofit. The old adage, shoot at where it’s goingnot where it’s from, is as true today as it wasin the age of the flintlock. The distance thegun needs to be in front of the target at aThe most sensible planis to concentrate on firstbecoming an adequateshot based on a goodunderstanding of a basictechnique.“given range and speed can be computedon paper, but in the shooting field whereeverything happens in split seconds, technique, experience and that previouslydiscussed sense of speed and distancecome into play. Some shooters, even someinstructors, will talk of having to be two feetor 10 yards in front of the target, but reallysuch advice is of little use. What looks sixfeet at 35 yards to me may well look twicethat to you. Nevertheless the gun mustalways be the correct distance in front ofthe target at any given range so how is thisachieved? There are two basic techniques opento beginners, both of which have theirmerits. Learn both these techniques froma gun down position. Whatever form ofclay target shooting you intend to pursueincluding Trap, learning to bring your gunto your shoulder and face smoothly andaccurately will provide you with the gunhandling skills you need for every kind ofshooting. The CPSA or pull away method issuited to the clay pigeon shooter because itcan be easily rehearsed. It is also an intuitivesystem which relies on our aforementionedability to point. The shooter must first determine atwhich spot is the target seen as a distinctobject (the visual pick-up point). As thetarget appears, the barrels are placed onit and moved with it, and then acceleratedaway in front of it. With the barrels in theshooter’s peripheral vision some lead willthen be seen and the trigger is pulled. The alternative method is one usuallytaught to game shooters where rehearsalis not an option. This involves judging thetarget’s speed and distance placing the46 gunshot

EGINNERSbarrels just behind the target, swingingthem through its trajectory, the gun firmlymounted in the shoulder, the face on thestock and eyes glued to the target, the gunis fired. The swing through method, as it isgenerally called, relies upon the speed ofthe swing to overthrow the target therebycreating some lead without actually seeingit. It should be added that for most goingaway targets, as in Trap shooting whenthe shooter and gun are always behindthe target, the swing through method isthe obvious choice. Whichever techniqueyou choose first practise until you haveperfected it. You will find as your experiencegrows you may use both depending on thetype of target. At moderate ranges, these simplebut effective methods of achieving leadprovides remarkably effective results. Atgreater ranges, say 35 to 40 yards andfurther, more daylight has to be consciouslyseen between the barrels and the target, but both methods can still be used to greateffect by keeping your swing going that bitfurther.Only practice and experience canprovide the sight pictures which willgradually become logged in your brain tobreak really long targets. The pull awayor the swing through method provides abasis for shooting at any range and ensuresyour barrels will follow the target’s line offlight accurately, and as long as the swingis maintained a clean kill is assured. Thatis providing your face remains in firm““In the best of all worldseverybody would learnto shoot a shotgun underthe guidance of a skilledinstructor and graduallyprogress to an acceptablelevel of competence.contact with the gun stock and the gun fitsyou. This brings us to a vital component ofaccurate shotgun shooting…GunfitAny attempt to consciously align ashotgun with a moving target as youwould a rifle at a fixed one is to guaranteea miss. A shotgun is pointed at the target, not aimed, which brings us back to ourinnate sense of speed and distance, andour ability to point an extended arm withincredible accuracy at moving objects. To utilise this innate ability in shotgunshooting, the gunstock should be ofdimensions that match our personalphysical characteristics in terms of lengthof arm, breadth of chest and length ofneck. These dimensions if computedaccurately, will ensure that when theshooter brings his gun to his shoulderhe will, providing his technique is sound,be able to shoot accurately without anyfurther adjustment or alignment beingrequired. The gun will quite simply place the shotcharge where the shooter looks.Volumes have been written on thesubject of gunfit, sufficient to say at thispoint, beginners are difficult to fit simplybecause their gun mounting technique isnot usually very consistent. It is howeveralso true to say, providing a man of averagebuild has a gunstock of average dimensionshe can manage well enough, sometimessurprisingly well.I would emphasise“that shooting cannot belearned from the writtenpage, only by shooting,in the beginning asmuch as possible sothat a sound techniquecan be established andconfidence, the mostimportant ingredient ofall, be developed. You want to be achampionIt should always be remembered thatchampions began at the same point as weall did. So far as physical characteristics areconcerned, while a degree of general fitnessis desirable for any activity, in shooting it isno great significance. Shooting championscome in all shapes and sizes, but whatthey share with all successful sportsmenis the ability to perform at their best underpressure. I would suggest that at least inpart this comes from a confidence builton a learning process that never ends, but when it’s time to perform recedes intothe subconscious. The champion makesshooting look easy, but to acquire that skilland seeming ease requires time, patience, discipline and practice.“The most sensible plan is to concentrateon first becoming an adequate shot basedon a good understanding of a basictechnique.”“In the best of all worlds everybodywould learn to shoot a shotgun underthe guidance of a skilled instructor andgradually progress to an acceptable levelof competence.”Acknowledgement: Article by courtsey of Pull! the Officialmagazine of the Clay Pigeon Shooting Association.www.shootersshop.com.auAustralia’slargest onlineshootingaccessories shop“Quality is remembered long after theprice is forgotten” - Guccigunshot 47

OBITUARYC Grade Points Score; Scott Wagstaff, Matt Dyer, Tony Beaver.B Grade Single Barrel; Stu Clark, Ian Crowe.JOHN MARTENSFor the last twenty years John, PeterBrenton and I have attended sportingclay venues around NZ and overseas.Peter having passed away some fouryears ago had a huge impact on us butnow John has gone I feel a loss that onlya true friend can experience. We had a reputation as being theliving legends in sporting clay circlesand it was often said if you can shootin our squad you could shoot anywhere. I think this alludedto our constant banter and joking as fun and companionship weremore important than a good score, although there were occasionsof a prize which always brought about the question “are we stayingor going yonge heer” (young man) as it was very important forJohnny to get back to Vonny, his true love and soul mate.It was nice to see some of the original shooting group fromWaitemata Clay Target Club (the wombles as Russell Heward hadnamed us) attending the funeral along with a large number offriends and business associates.Special thanks to Sid Turner and Robbie Clark for travellingfrom the north.John lived life for enjoyment and fun but was also a businessman highly revered by the companies he dealt with in the carpetworld, he will be missed by many.Andy Veltmeyer.Ellesmere 90 Years On continued:Grant Castles receiving his life membership from Allan Ebbett.C Grade Single Barrel; Allan Treloar, Scott Wagstaff, Matt Dyer. And so the Club continues to flourish as the sons, grandsons,great-grandsons and relatives of the founders mixed with theblood of several fine shots who have opted to affiliate to theClub. The club is very proud of its group of young shooters all ofwhom show great promise. Andrew Washbourne has the potentialto emulate the feats of his great-great Uncle Ted and father Barrywho both attained NZ titles Jack Turner has the blood of E L F(Wig) Donald in his veins. Wig was a very fine shot and on his dayvirtually unbeatable. Karl Perrett from Ashburton is also a talentedjunior. Ethan Garrett is the type of boy one would like as a son- sowell mannered and keen to learn, he is developing into a forceto be reckoned with at the Club. Ethan’s friend Jake Hamilton isimproving every shoot. Both these boys come from the Lakesidearea which has produced so many fine shots for the Club. The Club is in good heart with a popular and hardworkingPresident and an enthusiastic Committee with a “get things doneattitude’’ and is steadily improving its facilities. There are manyfamilies and businesses who readily provide sponsorship and theClub is very appreciative of this support. Membership has surgedof late and is approaching 50 affiliated to the Club. Attendances atshoots boosted by visiting shooters from other Clubs have beensteadily on the increase. Evening practice shoots held during daylight saving months have brought out good numbers resulting inseveral new members. Pride in the Club is very evident so the Clubcan look forward to the future with confidence.gunshot 49
