H<strong>is</strong> stories and books have <strong>in</strong>spired people allover the <strong>world</strong>. Here are just some of <strong>Nicolas</strong>’s most impressive achievements:1982 - Expedition on foot to Lapland1983-1984 - Cross<strong>in</strong>g the North Quebec wilderness from Schefferville toUngava Bay follow<strong>in</strong>g the trail of the Montagna<strong>is</strong> people by canoe.1986-1987 - For a year and a half, <strong>Nicolas</strong> and h<strong>is</strong> team jo<strong>in</strong>ed the h<strong>is</strong>tory ofthe large pioneers of the west: They trekked 7000 km through the wildest zones ofthe Rockies and Alaska, from Wyom<strong>in</strong>g to the strait of Ber<strong>in</strong>g us<strong>in</strong>g 12 horses, 24huskies, a raft and two canoes. A film cover<strong>in</strong>g h<strong>is</strong>journey 'In the north of the w<strong>in</strong>ter' was then made along with h<strong>is</strong> book 'Transsibérie,the wild myth'.1993 - <strong>Nicolas</strong> <strong>Vanier</strong> shared the life of a family of Even nomads,stockbreeders of re<strong>in</strong>deers and nomads <strong>in</strong> the Siberian Arctic. He tells th<strong>is</strong> story <strong>in</strong>'the life <strong>in</strong> north'.1994-1995 - <strong>Nicolas</strong> spent one year with h<strong>is</strong> wife and eighteen month olddaughter cross<strong>in</strong>g the Rockies and the Yukon on horseback, stay<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a cab<strong>in</strong> theybuilt themselves then travell<strong>in</strong>g by sled dogs on a 2500 km trip to Alaska. H<strong>is</strong> book'the child of the snow' was then publ<strong>is</strong>hed and a full-length film cover<strong>in</strong>g the journeymade available on DVD on 20 December 1995.1999 - The WHITE ODYSSEE saw <strong>Nicolas</strong> follow a journey across the wholeGreat North Canadian wilderness from Skagway <strong>in</strong> Alaska to Quebec, cover<strong>in</strong>g 8600 km <strong>in</strong> less than a hundred days with h<strong>is</strong> team of sled dogs. A 90 m<strong>in</strong>utes fulllengthfilm along with the book 'L'Odysee Blanche', with editions from Robert Laffont,tracks h<strong>is</strong> trails.2003 - In the w<strong>in</strong>ter of 2003, <strong>Nicolas</strong> started to shoot h<strong>is</strong> first full-length fictionfilm <strong>in</strong> the Yukon called 'Le Dernier Trappeur' (The Last Trapper), produced by MC4.2004 - ‘Le Dernier Trappeur’ was released <strong>in</strong> c<strong>in</strong>emas (The Last Trapper, 2.3million tickets sold).<strong>Nicolas</strong> publ<strong>is</strong>hed an illustrated children’s book ‘Le Dernier Trappeur’ and also aphoto book ‘Le Dernier Trappeur’Publ<strong>is</strong>h<strong>in</strong>g of h<strong>is</strong> novel ‘L’Or sous la neige’ (Gold beneath the snow)


2005 - <strong>Nicolas</strong> set up the GREAT ODYSSEY <strong>in</strong> the French Alps, the toughest<strong>in</strong>ternational sled dog race <strong>in</strong> the <strong>world</strong> because of the topography of the mounta<strong>in</strong> itcovers. The race br<strong>in</strong>gs together each year 20 of the best mushers <strong>in</strong> the <strong>world</strong>.They stride 900 km <strong>in</strong> Savoie and Haute Savoie and mount over 25 000 m.2005-2006 - <strong>Nicolas</strong> crossed Siberia from Lake Baikal to Red Square <strong>in</strong>Moscow, cover<strong>in</strong>g 8 000 km. The SIBERIAN ODYSSEY aroused a live <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> avery large audience and was the subject of a movie and books ‘L’OdysséeSibérienne’. Th<strong>is</strong> adventure was followed by many children at school, with<strong>in</strong> theframework of a huge operation of environmental education. TF1 (French biggesttelev<strong>is</strong>ion channel) broadcasted the movie ‘L’Odyssée Sibérienne’ <strong>in</strong> prime time atChr<strong>is</strong>tmas 2006. Two books for children were publ<strong>is</strong>hed, so as a big pictures bookand a video game.<strong>Nicolas</strong> publ<strong>is</strong>hed a compilation of memories and anecdotes from h<strong>is</strong>expeditions <strong>in</strong> ‘Mémoires Glacées’ (Frozen Memoirs)The French Board of Education put him <strong>in</strong> charge of sett<strong>in</strong>g up a wideenvironmental operation <strong>in</strong> schools.2008 - <strong>Nicolas</strong> directed h<strong>is</strong> second featured film ‘Loup’ (Wolf), adapted fromh<strong>is</strong> 2008 novel. The plot takes place <strong>in</strong> Siberia, among the Evens, and was <strong>in</strong>spiredby h<strong>is</strong> own experience.2009 - <strong>Nicolas</strong> establ<strong>is</strong>hed a resort <strong>in</strong> French Vercors. Baikal.<strong>Nicolas</strong> just started tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g a high level team of dogs to run the two major sleddog races <strong>in</strong> the <strong>world</strong>: the Yukon Quest (1600 km from Whitehorse to Fairbanks)and the Iditarod (1 750 km from Anchorage to Nome). Two years of tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g arenecessary (at least one <strong>in</strong> Yukon) to br<strong>in</strong>g the dogs to their very best level.<strong>Nicolas</strong> starts shoot<strong>in</strong>g the adaptation of h<strong>is</strong> novel ‘L’Or sous la neige’ (Goldbeneath the snow), which tells the <strong>in</strong>credible but true story of the Klondike GoldRush.
