“Exports and Foreign Trade Zones - Opportunities and Basic Requirements”
ABOUT OUR SPEAKER:
John Senese
John Senese joined ITAC in March 2007 where he served as director of operations. In
2011 he was named vice president of international operations for NEOTEC. Mr. Senese
has 28 years of experience working for major multinational companies in the chemical,
automotive and plastics industries, with 22 years directly focused in international business
management.
He began his career in Alaska and moved to Cleveland in the late 1980s to join the international
department at B.F. Goodrich. He spent the next 14 years progressing
through increasingly responsible positions, including two expatriate assignments in
Europe and a corporate role as managing director for their South America business.
Mr. Senese subsequently joined Myers Industries as general manager of their
international division, where he managed an organization consisting of 7 international
and 2 domestic locations and sales in more than 100 countries around the world.
From 2007 to 2011, Mr. Senese served two consecutive two-year terms on the board
of the Northern Ohio District Export Council (NODEC), an advisory group to the U.S.
Department of Commerce Export Assistance Center.
Parking for PDM at Cleveland State University
President’s Message:
2012...What are Your New Year’s Resolutions after a Challenging 2011?
If you’re like many professionals in Operations and Supply Chain Management,
you’re considering some resolutions regarding your priorities and proposed
changes, both professional and personal, to implement in 2012.
Resolution #1: Based on the number of natural disasters and their impact on
global business in 2011, one popular resolution is to give some needed attention
to Business Continuity Planning and selective redundancy around our supply
chains and our production facilities. The article “When Supply Chains Break” in
this month’s Fortune magazine shows the fragile nature of supply chains and the
highlights the importance of redundancy in production operations. Examples
include the catastrophic earthquake and resulting tsunami in Japan in March
2011, and the record monsoon flooding in Thailand in March and April both of
which impacted the flow of goods to global partners. Combine those dramatic
impacts with events in the United States including the tornado outbreak in April;
Mississippi river flooding (300% above normal) and wildfires in Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona (the states’
largest fires on record), and you have a host of reasons to do some high-level continuity planning.
Resolution #2: Keeping a close eye on raw materials supply and pricing and helping executive management with
strategic decisions based on resources is another popular resolution as we move forward in 2012. Over the last
few weeks, news sources have focused on a single metric: the cost of crude oil. While none of the market watchers
can predict what will happen, there are several indicators that the price of oil will continue at current levels.
The recent escalation of rhetoric between Iran and the United States, and the strategic military demonstrations by
both sides over the last few days introduced some additional uncertainty into the system. If the cost of oil stays
high, it will likely affect business decisions regarding off-shore and near-shore production.
Resolution #3: On the personal front, it’s time to review our certifications and our progress and plan the continuing
investment in our careers. I have often quoted the metric from APICS International that APICS certifications
can translate to increased salary compensation of up to 17%. In addition, some of the intangible benefits of participating
in chapter events and the chapter Board of Directors include the opportunity to develop your leadership
skills, network with your peers, and learn “best practices” to take back to your company. So please consider investing
in your professional development by continuing your APICS education, and by participating in our Board
of Directors.
As Operations Management and Supply Chain leaders, our job is to ensure our companies, partners and clients are
successful. One of the best ways for us to stay abreast of all the complexities and new developments is through
APICS Professional Development Meetings (PDMs). Our Director of Programs, Art Fellenstein, and our Director
at Large, Steve Nemeth, have put together a great 2012 line up that addresses the global aspects of our responsibilities.
At our January 12 th PDM, John Senese - Vice President, International Operations, NEOTEC will present
information on International Markets and Opportunities with emphasis on International Markets, Economic Benefits,
Export Basics, Foreign Trade Zones, and Exports.
Last month’s Professional Development Meeting presentation by John DuBiel Jr., Founder and CEO of Supply
Chain Edge, focused on shipping and distribution and the growing concern in the truckload and less-thantruckload
spaces based on an aging workforce and a limited supply of transportation equipment. Our thanks to
John for sharing his experience in Distribution, productivity, and operations management; and for his advice to
build long-term partnership with selected vendors.
President’s Message (continued)
For those that haven’t attended a PDM meeting at the CSU Student Center facility, I can share with you that
the accommodations are outstanding, and the parking, which is validated in the meeting, is only one block
away in a convenient CSU parking facility. (South Garage).
On the Education Front, our Winter Classes are scheduled to begin the week of 1/16, and they include: Basics
of Supply Chain Management, Execution and Control of Operations, and Master Planning of Resources.
Thank you to all the current board members, instructors and presenters for your hard work and support during
this 2011/2012 program year. We look forward to seeing everyone at our next professional development
meeting on Thursday, January 12 th at the Student Center - Cleveland State University.
Best of luck with your resolutions, and have a happy and healthy 2012!
APICS Cleveland Chapter Job Bank
Are you currently in the unemployment line with so many other Americans at this time? Or are you
considering a career move in the near future? If this situation applies to you, please take a moment
to review local career opportunities listed on the Cleveland Chapter website at
www.apicscleveland.org.
Many Cleveland area companies and recruiters seeking to fill positions in the functional areas of
supply chain, production control, purchasing, and logistics request that current employment opportunities
be posted on the APICS Cleveland website. The reason these astute hiring professionals
utilize the APICS Job Bank? They are cognizant of the fact that the target audience of APICS
members is comprised of competent, experienced, qualified candidates who are capable of fulfilling
these roles! Furthermore, by advertising job opportunities via the Job Bank on the APICS website,
the hiring process is streamlined for employers by mitigating the plethora of responses received
from unqualified applicants that inevitably result when using typical public job boards.
The Job Bank service provided by the APICS Cleveland Chapter is a "win-win" for both employers
and job seekers!! Please peruse the job postings on the website on a regular basis if you
are interested in local employment opportunities in the Cleveland area.
that support the supply chain (for example, sales and marketing, accounting, information technology,
The course strengthens the entire team and fosters appreciation of a properly structured and managed
supply chain.
Benefits to Participants
SCM teams.
