Consequences“Okay, <strong>class</strong>, it’s time to turn <strong>in</strong> your spell<strong>in</strong>g crossword puzzles,” Ms. Wyattannounces to her sixth-<strong>grade</strong> <strong>class</strong>.“But I didn’t f<strong>in</strong>ish m<strong>in</strong>e,” Nicholas compla<strong>in</strong>s.“Neither did I,” adds Derek.“Of course not!” Eldrick shouts out. “You guys were way too busy talk<strong>in</strong>g aboutC<strong>in</strong>dy Crawford!”“Well, you have to admit, she is someth<strong>in</strong>g to talk about,” Nicholas retorts.Ms. Wyatt shakes her head <strong>in</strong> mock disgust. “Apparently puberty is settl<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>here, isn’t it <strong>class</strong>? Especially for a couple of boys I know.” <strong>The</strong> <strong>class</strong> giggles, then shesays, “Nick and Derek, I’d like you to f<strong>in</strong>ish your work when you have some free timeafter lunch.” <strong>The</strong> two boys nod their heads to <strong>in</strong>dicate that they will.Assigned to groups of three, Ms. Wyatt’s <strong>students</strong> have been work<strong>in</strong>g on theirpapier-mâché relief maps of North America for most of the afternoon. But one group—Molly, Helen, and Lori—has been so busy talk<strong>in</strong>g about their favorite television showthat they have put little effort <strong>in</strong>to complet<strong>in</strong>g their map.“Hey, you guys,” Molly urges, “we’d better get busy. We only have 20 morem<strong>in</strong>utes left before we have to go to music.”“Ah, don’t worry about it,” Helen tells her.“Yeah, we can always f<strong>in</strong>ish tomorrow,” Lori addsMs. Wyatt flicks the lights to get her <strong>students</strong>’ attention. “Class, I forgot to tellyou about the bonus today. <strong>The</strong> first group to f<strong>in</strong>ish its relief map will have 15 m<strong>in</strong>utes offree time this afternoon.”“All right!” several of the children shout.“Why didn’t she tell us earlier?” Helen whispers to her friends.“It drives me crazy when she does stuff like that,” Lori whispers back. “I mean,we could have worked harder if we’d known that there was a reason to get done on time.”“Okay, <strong>class</strong>, it’s time to put your relief maps on the back table to dry. As you allknow by now, Meesha’s group f<strong>in</strong>ished its map first, so that group has earned the freetime I promised.” <strong>The</strong> <strong>class</strong> politely claps for Meesha’s group.“Ms. Wyatt, we didn’t get our map done,” Molly calls out.“That’s ‘cause you guys were too busy gossip<strong>in</strong>g,” Samantha teases. <strong>The</strong> <strong>class</strong>laughs.“Samantha, it’s not nice to tease your <strong>class</strong>mates,” Ms. Wyatt says firmly, thenturns to the three procrast<strong>in</strong>ators. “ But girls, I’m not particularly sympathetic. When Igive you an assignment, I expect you to do it. I want the three of you to stay here untilyou f<strong>in</strong>ish it.”“But we’ll miss music,” wh<strong>in</strong>es Helen.“You should have thought about that before you decided to goof off dur<strong>in</strong>g yourgroup time.”“But Derek and Nicholas got extra time to f<strong>in</strong>ish their work this morn<strong>in</strong>g,” Mollypo<strong>in</strong>ts out.“Yeah, it isn’t fair if they get extra time to complete their work and we don’t,”Helen adds.“I don’t have any extra time to give you,” counters Ms. Wyatt.
